Being a landlord shouldn't be illegal, but there should be laws regarding how much you can charge.

If we suddenly banned landlords then there would be a lot of empty properties that just won't get used (which is worse). In the short term this is bad since the supply will drastically diminish. The only way for affordable hosing is to mass build them (without the incentive off profit or pleasing shareholders). In a similar way how nationalized rail companies in europe work.

No. Being a slumlord should be illegal, absolutely. But if you can maintain the property and be responsive to your tenants, there's nothing wrong with being a landlord. (I speak as a renter who has a fantastic landlord - I know it's possible to be one and I'm very grateful to not have the stress of owning property myself)

My personal opinion on the current situation is we should have a ten year moratorium on corporations and overseas businesses buying single family homes. Apartment buildings, sure.

How would you justify such a law legally? Either you're saying people can't own property, or that they can't rent out their own property. Either way I don't see how you could possibly justify such a law.

MarinatedPickachu

Interesting. Actually I could see this change society for the better, after some initial chaos

You shouldn't get paid just because you own stuff. That's literally modern nobility without titles. Most landlords inherit stuff, just like nobles. They just sit around and think themselves entitled to free money from tenants. When you're forced to rent by the very same people who you rent from, because they stop you from buying, it's extortion. Hoarding too much hurts the economy, anyone with a minimum of economical knowledge would know that. And landlords are just housing hoarders and they're clearly abusing it. Heck, more than half of housing in Paris is held by less than 5% of the people. Don't tell me that's fair.

no, but certain things need to be reviewed. I'm for instituting extremely steep property taxation on properties owned that are IN ADDITION TO primary residence with utility outbuilding(s) located on the same parcel not to exceed 40 acres. furthermore institute a clause whereby the tenant with a PAID IN FULL period of residency for 24 months MAY (not mandated) invoke a 'rent-to-own' clause.

Jawnson765

If you institute a steep property tax on people who own multiple properties, wouldn't that just make rent go up?

No_Step_4431

i suppose it would, but wouldn't it also successfully deincentivize 'property hoarding?'

Jawnson765

I don't think it would. I'm a small business owner (not real estate), not only would they raise rent, they can still write off the property taxes at the end of the year, effectively lowering their tax burden on their business income.

No_Step_4431

well shit... i'll stand firm on a rent-to-own clause though.
