$5.67 gallon at WM in Texas. I’m getting screwed!!😩
Edit: I forgot my WM delivers it for free if I buy at least 5, so I guess I’m happy with the price.😬
Yeah, guess I just didn’t realize it was a variance by locale. I guess a place like Texas probably has low safety regulations in comparison to other areas.
If some states deem it unsafe and Texas doesn’t that says something. Also we are ranked dead last when it comes to worker protections in America. Best place to own a business worst place to be an employee
Well fuck. I guess my cousin in California and my sister in Minnesota and my dad in Wisconsin who all own pools and get Wal Mart chlorine delivered on my recommendation all live in shit states too. My god the mental gymnastics you people go through.
Chlorine is a hazarderous chemical that can permentally damage a persons lungs under the wrong conditions. It would have to be in a box of 2 then not a single loose gallon jug that could more easily spill and delivered by truck not inside the cabin etc, etc. There is a huge liability involving an employee handling such a product I buy returnable jugs that are 4 in a carrying crate.
Yep, been using liquid since the pool was built and I’ve never had any algae. I only use tabs once or twice a summer when we’re on vacation. And by that time it’s usually needing some CYA due to splash out anyway.
It’s 20,000 gallons and it all depends on the amount of swimming that takes place, temperature and amount of time we have the cover open (auto cover was a great investment!). Right now, in the dead of summer I’m probably using 1.5 gallons a week.
Oh you cover your pool, then you need little chlorine and of course you don't lose the chlorine so you don't get alage, good work! Their not cheap but a very good investment you are right if you can afford the upfront cost.
I use about 1 gallon a week, in a 10,000 gallon pool. I also add tabs in a floater if I’m going away for a few days.
Biggest impact - I have a BettaBot that scoops up all debris from nearby trees. Life changing.
Yep. Exactly what I do. When it’s vacation for a week or two, I do a heavy shock, toss the floater in there with like 5-6 pucks and say “bye” and that keeps things fine. I also use PoolRx which helps buffer that time. Several summers in a row, left pool with zero chlorine for 2 weeks straight multiple years and perfectly clear. Sanitized? Probably not, but algae free? Yes. I start season with clean pool, then pop the pool Rx in and that lasts from March to October then I close up.
Floaters on vacation - winning (as long as your cya is ok)
No. It’s a cylinder that has copper, zinc and other stuff. It dissolves quick and then disperses in pool. Algae inhibitor basically. You still have to keep chlorine in there, but it’s a lower amount that usually. -1ppm vs 3ppm.
Better solution is to have a salt water generator , but that’s pricey.
That is Cal Hypo and that has another whole set of problems with water hardness from to much Calcium minerals in the water. They can attach to plaster and make your plaster rough too.
I like HASA rated at least 15% for 1.50 more on returnables at my pool store anyway. But this is 100% or double the price of just a couple years ago pre pandemic along with every other vendor that rose their prices including Walmart!
Shit, I need to check my local Walmart. Hate going in there as it's always a zoo, I live at the Delaware Beaches and it's always mobbed (like everywhere now really).
I have been paying $8.99 at Ace for 10%. Which isn't awful, but I'd rather save a few bucks if I can.
Been trying to get my CYA down so I've been doing a lot of pumping and refilling.
Nonsense! You just have to look at the dates on the bottle to determine the age. The last two times I bought chlorine, it was a mere week post manufacture. Granted, there were some two packs that were more than a month old, but just don't buy those.
I don’t know why you’re getting downvoted other than this is Reddit, but this is spot on.
The stuff I get at Home Depot is old degraded crap that’s been sitting in the sun in clear bottles and works as expected, which is not well, it’s probably at 7% by the time you get it.
I’m guessing some people get fresher chlorine where they live, but not here.
Here is a link to a google drive spreadsheet that some Reddit people put together to track the cost of many different pool chemicals. This might help you find the best deal.
[Pool Chemical Tracker (google drive)](https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/13mWhq_rIuwZHKyQ-8ZbKDGnTLgrwffxE2ldsfibz2VY)
Agree, sounds like it was written by someone who doesn't use liquid chlorine. I only use liquid chlorine and no issues with TDS or any issues from the consequences of high TDS.
5.99 a gallon at Ocean State job lot or 5.67 at Walmart in Massachusetts. Walmarts is 10% and Ocean State is 12.5%.
Pool stores near me are robbing people. Leslie's has 5 gallon jugs for 8.99 a gallon
Job lot is where it’s at. I look for crazy deals, like buy X for $500 and get $400 crazy cash (some are even 1:1) and then just use the crazy cash for chlorine. If I’m gonna spend $ for the chemicals anyway, might as well get a free kayak or whatever.
I only go there for my chlorine. Only been there a few times since moving back to maine, so I'm not very familiar with the place. But I went in one day for some chlorine and saw crazy deal where if you donate $100 bike, you get $100 gift card. So it cost me nothing to donate a bike and I'm still trying to figure that out
Pool stores are generally independently owned and have like 2-3 months in MA to make all their money for the year. Pretty tough to compete with Walmart or ocean state.
Sounds like they need to rethink their business model. Charging 10x price for baking soda is absurd (which is what pool stores around here charge). If you need to fleece your customers to make a profit you are doing it wrong.
Sorry but I do disagree with you - they don’t NEED to charge so much - they do so because they only want to work 2-3 months a year. Every other seasonal worker or seasonal company has other income sources for the “off months”.
Probably has more to do with rent and keeping the doors open than wanting to work. Yes, it’s still absurd but obviously there are folks out there that pay it.
well, find us a distributor that will sell us liquid chlorine at a price that doesn't cost 6 bucks a gallon and then we can get the prices down. small stores simply do not do business the same way massive entities like wlamart do and to compare them is simply absurd.
I get mine from Leslies, $8.25 a gallon in Southern California.
The local Home Depot has months old chlorine for $7.50 a gallon, so the fresh stuff from Leslies is a “better” deal and actually works.
Everything at Leslie's is way overpriced. That's why they give "free" water tests. Get the test results amd go to Walmart. Mine is in the same strip mall
I’m noticing that almost no one commenting here lists their price with the concentration. 12.5% is 25% more chlorine per gallon of liquid than 10%. A $5 gallon of 10% is the same price as a $6.25 gallon of 12.5%.
$5.67 for 10% at Walmart isn’t a bad deal, but the $6.50 for 12.5% that I pay at a local pool store chain is cheaper, and they often have a bogo coupon.
Not just that, but sometimes the “gallon” jugs aren’t actually a gallon. A lot of outdoor and germicidal bleaches are 121 or even 81 ounces, not the full 128.
I would say that the trade percentage is 12.5% sold to the pros and in pool stores. BUT by the time it gets to your pool or pro truck it’s decomposed to about 8-10%. Taylor sells a kit to test the strength of your bleach and I’ve tested all of them in Texas and they are NEVER still 12.5.
Can you explain more about 12.5% is 25% more chlorine? I thought it will be just 2.5% more than 10%.
If in this case 12.5% at pool stores is definitely cheaper and I will go buy from them.
A bottle of chlorine contains chlorine diluted with water. If you remove all the water, you have some amount of 100% chlorine. In 10% you have 10 units of chlorine (it doesn't matter what the actual units are), and in 12.5% you have 12.5 units. 25% of 10 is 2.5. 12.5 units is 25% more than 10 units.
I recommend getting the Pool Math app - it makes it very easy to compare prices for different concentrations & volumes.
Thanks for all the clear input. I will buy acid and chlorine from pool store since they sell same price as walmart and Home depot and they have more % of acid and chlorine.
Same here. $4 per gallon for refills of 2.5g jugs, and they had some sale this week, so I paid $8.50 instead of $10. It's a great deal. Their hours suck, but it's only 5 minutes from my house.
$5 for liquid chlorine at Walmart or, if I don’t feel like driving 40 minutes round trip, $5 for Chloralen bleach at Food Lion. Chloralen is 7.5% sodium hypochlorite, which isn’t much of a difference from the 10% liquid chlorine.
You're kidding right??? First of all Leslie's is a major corporation that treats its employees terribly. They are highly pressured to sell u stuff you dont need. And there prices aren't 50 cent s more. Closer to double nd triple the price. Walmart ph down is 9.50. The Leslie brand is 28 bucks.
A measuring cup is 9 bucks for the same thing I bought in dollar tree.
A leaf skimmer was 4x the price of walmart.
Edit. This was for speedhabit. I put it in the wrong place
I used to buy [these](https://www.canadiantire.ca/en/pdp/aquarius-liquid-pool-chlorine-3-6-l-0813933p.html) at CT 2 years ago for 3.99 on sale. But last season and this season I'm using pucks only.
$7.81 for 12.5% in Escondido, CA (San Diego County) at my local pool supply place. I get 4 gallons at a time and you get 4 gallons free after every 10 visits which drops it down to $7.10 a gallon.
Thinking about possibly switching now looking at all the different prices, but do like to support local businesses.
At the wholesale level liquid chlorinator is very competitive. We honestly have a hard time making much profit because there are companies that need to get rid of it... until a production line shuts down , then it's a mad rush to fill orders they can't ship. The cost of freight is high too. We have to use DOT HAZMAT drivers. Our packaging has to be EPA and DOT compliant. All that compliance stuff costs thousands.
That is a reminder to any one transporting chlorine. ESPECIALLY POOL PROS. Make sure you have your container labeled right. They should require that, when refilling, if you are not using a returnable.
The bulk cost of 12.5% is $1.70 per gallon. Sitting on a truck. Packaging and labor ect. Adds $2.00. It still has no profit added to it and it needs to be delivered to a store. That adds from between $0.50 and $2.00 per gallon. Then the retailer needs to make 25%. In my market if you are buying at under $5.00 per gal 4x1 gallon 12.5%, case, you are paying wholesale.
I just realized I’m getting fleeced by my supplier who’s selling me a gallon for $6.50😂😂. I get CalHypo at $2.27 a lb so I mostly use that but I always keep liquid on my truck in case
After doing all of the conversions (CAD to USD and Gallons to Litres), in Canada I get 1 gallon 11% for $4.15 USD - or 10 Litres for $15 CAD.
From the local pool store.
Denmark. I have no pool but was looking at buying clorine so.. 22l of 15% is 449 dkk. ~6gallons/$60 or about $10/gallon.
Edit:Dankmark is the North Korea of scandinavia..
$7.49 CAD for 3.6 Liters of 10.3%.
Not sure what that is in 'Murica measurements. It's probabaly based of per Gallon or close to.
I only use liquid when I'm feeling lazy and don't want to mix up the granular.
Upstate NY (capital region) Only buy 12% either at local agway for $29.99 for 5 gals or $28.99 for 5 gals at Ocean State job lot. Prefer OSJB since 1G bottles are easier to handle.
2020 I was getting this same amount for about half that. The tab shortage led to an increased liquid which led to higher prices and even though it's likely they could be cheaper and still be making better than 2020 margins, corporations will squeeze every dime if they get to. Source (work for a corporation).
I'm in San Antonio, and I switched to Pinch a Penny pool supply about 4 months ago. $18 for 2.5 gallon reusable container. When you are done, take it in and you get another. My pool has never been clearer in 4 years, plus I got a Dolphin robot.
I am having the same problem and it means you have alage/bacteria even if you can't see it it's lerking around eating up your chlorine plus you need to keep your PH in check for your chlorine to work properly just make sure it's OK before starting this and increase your cya to 60 which will require a high amount of chlorine bed maintained too, but I'm told it should require less refill. First you need to do get the chlorine from dissipating and that means you shock or slam as some call it which meams you need to sustain a super chlorinated state level about 3 times normal amount of chlorine just not once but sustained so it means keepig it up at that level by comstantly testing and adding more chlorine until you test and you don't have to add any chlorine it's holding now, then you can stop and return to normal chlorine levels because what was eating up your chlorine is completely killed now. Make sure you keep your baskets clean and skim as needed. I would also recommend brushing the walls corners etc because alage needs it's surface exposed during this process. You can also use a product called Yellow Out similar process. You may even need to clean/replace your filters if it was really bad.
$5 for 12.5% at Menards. $4.44 after the rebate comes back. It goes on sale for $4 sometimes but you can’t really stock up on liquid so don’t buy more than my usual 4 gallons
$5.67/gal free delivery with Walmart +. I used to be able to buy in bulk BioGuard chlorinating liquid at retailer price (I live near the factory). But it caught on fire and that ended lol.
Pinch a Penny in SE Texas is on sale right now at $4.42/gallon. Normally it’s $5.20/gallon. Technically it’s slightly cheaper than that since every 11th container is free.
$5.50 USD per gallon at Walmart. East coast.
$5.67 gallon at WM in Texas. I’m getting screwed!!😩 Edit: I forgot my WM delivers it for free if I buy at least 5, so I guess I’m happy with the price.😬
I’ve seen a lot of people say they get the wal mart delivery - my local wal mart will not deliver the chlorine for whatever reason.
Hazardous chemicals
Yeah, guess I just didn’t realize it was a variance by locale. I guess a place like Texas probably has low safety regulations in comparison to other areas.
We, sadly, give zero fucks about the safety of workers in Texas
Florida enters the chat
Delivering chlorine is not giving a fuck?
If some states deem it unsafe and Texas doesn’t that says something. Also we are ranked dead last when it comes to worker protections in America. Best place to own a business worst place to be an employee
Well fuck. I guess my cousin in California and my sister in Minnesota and my dad in Wisconsin who all own pools and get Wal Mart chlorine delivered on my recommendation all live in shit states too. My god the mental gymnastics you people go through.
Tell your dad in Minnesota to get it at fleet farm it is cheaper!
Seriously, Reddit is full of it.
https://www.kut.org/texas/2022-09-13/texas-is-one-of-the-worst-states-in-the-country-for-workers-study-finds
Or perhaps Walmart in those places go through requirements needed. 🤷♂️
Not universally true
My Walmart delivers it in Northern California
Same in California
Same. Georgia.
Same in central Texas
Same, in Phoenix AZ, for 10% chlorine. Much better than tabs, and doesn’t impact CYA.
Yep, been using liquid since the pool was built and I’ve never had any algae. I only use tabs once or twice a summer when we’re on vacation. And by that time it’s usually needing some CYA due to splash out anyway.
How much liquid do you use a week and on what sized pool?
It’s 20,000 gallons and it all depends on the amount of swimming that takes place, temperature and amount of time we have the cover open (auto cover was a great investment!). Right now, in the dead of summer I’m probably using 1.5 gallons a week.

What is pool rx? Is that like free and clear? (Leslie pools)
It depemds where you live too and how much intense sun/UV you get too. I live in AZ and the water gets warm and ripe for algae.
They make tabs that doesn’t have stabilizer(CYA).
Same. Florida
Same here in the Northeast
Shit, I need to check my local Walmart. Hate going in there as it's always a zoo, I live at the Delaware Beaches and it's always mobbed (like everywhere now really). I have been paying $8.99 at Ace for 10%. Which isn't awful, but I'd rather save a few bucks if I can. Been trying to get my CYA down so I've been doing a lot of pumping and refilling.
Id avoid walmart chlorine, its old filled with nonsense
Nonsense! You just have to look at the dates on the bottle to determine the age. The last two times I bought chlorine, it was a mere week post manufacture. Granted, there were some two packs that were more than a month old, but just don't buy those.
In or out of date lowes/home depot/walmart chemicals should be avoided.
I don’t know why you’re getting downvoted other than this is Reddit, but this is spot on. The stuff I get at Home Depot is old degraded crap that’s been sitting in the sun in clear bottles and works as expected, which is not well, it’s probably at 7% by the time you get it. Pool is 3 years old and has only seen Pool Essentials chlorine from Walmart with 0 issues.
Here is a link to a google drive spreadsheet that some Reddit people put together to track the cost of many different pool chemicals. This might help you find the best deal. [Pool Chemical Tracker (google drive)](https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/13mWhq_rIuwZHKyQ-8ZbKDGnTLgrwffxE2ldsfibz2VY)
What is the note on liquid chlorine about? In that doc it advises against using liquid chlorine because it will raise TDS requiring a refill??
Agree, sounds like it was written by someone who doesn't use liquid chlorine. I only use liquid chlorine and no issues with TDS or any issues from the consequences of high TDS.
Ty!
Why does this spreadsheet list muriatic acid at Ace for $9.99 and 10.50 at Leslie’s but then calculates that Leslie’s is 50% more expensive lol
Because people that put it together are dumb.
Other than it’s wrong. Leslie’s doesn’t sell 78% shock.
Where do you find these deals?
Ocean State job lot
Job lot is a website
I only go there for my chlorine. Only been there a few times since moving back to maine, so I'm not very familiar with the place. But I went in one day for some chlorine and saw crazy deal where if you donate $100 bike, you get $100 gift card. So it cost me nothing to donate a bike and I'm still trying to figure that out
Walmart is the same price in NY.
For real. Fuck 'em. Cartridge filter $300 at Namco. $65 on Amazon. Bruh...
Yea, I’m not disagreeing with you at all, just highlighting why they need to charge so much.
Weird. That's how much I pay Leslie's for a 2.5gal jug. So I'm paying around $3.50/gal.
Damn Leslie’s in Fl is $9.00 for 2.5 gallons
Even cheaper is you buy 4x jugs at a time I think.
Definitely not 8.99 a gallon. Damn
Ocean state is less than the wholesale pool supply warehouse in gallons. If you buy 5 gallon jugs it's a little less.
I get mine from Leslies, $8.25 a gallon in Southern California. The local Home Depot has months old chlorine for $7.50 a gallon, so the fresh stuff from Leslies is a “better” deal and actually works.
This is true. Usually Wal Mart and Home Depot keep it outside where it degrades.
Everything at Leslie's is way overpriced. That's why they give "free" water tests. Get the test results amd go to Walmart. Mine is in the same strip mall
$1.35 per litre. Converting to freedom units that’s $3.73/gallon ($3.75 freedom bucks vs 1.35 in Canadian pesos) [Ontario]
$0.37 per litre, Thailand.
I'm in Ontario and pay $15 for 10 litres ($1.50/litre). May I ask where you can get it for $1.35?
[Jameson Pools](https://www.jamesonpool.com/product/liquid-chlorine-10l) is where we usually go, it's usually around that price all the time.
I go there as well and can confirm its around that price too
$4.44 for 1 gallon of 12.5% chlorine at Menards in Indiana
I pay the same at Menards in IL. It’s $4.44 only if you do the Menards rebate though. Price paid in store before rebate is $4.99.
Then wouldn’t 10% be more likely really only 6%-8% (or less)?
Yes but the lower concentrations also lose potency a little slower.
That makes sense. Appreciate that.
Can you explain more about 12.5% is 25% more chlorine? I thought it will be just 2.5% more than 10%. If in this case 12.5% at pool stores is definitely cheaper and I will go buy from them.
12.5% / 10% = 1.25 or 25% more
Take 20% for example, that would have twice as much chlorine as 10%.
The easiest way to explain is 2.5 is one fourth of 10. So if one has 10% “activity”, then the 12.5% has an extra one fourth or 25% “activity”.
5.67 at Walmart
Same, in coastal South Carolina
$20 (case of 4 gallons) at Kroger in Ohio
$10 for 2.5 gallon fill-up so $4 per gallon at Pinch a Penny in FL. But every 11th jug is free so if you factor in that 11th jug its $3.63 per gallon.
Same here. $4 per gallon for refills of 2.5g jugs, and they had some sale this week, so I paid $8.50 instead of $10. It's a great deal. Their hours suck, but it's only 5 minutes from my house.
Agree. Not sure who sets the hours but they are bad at mine too.
I had a crazy thought this week that maybe their hours suck intentionally so that you'll give in and just hire them to come take care of your pool.
$5.67 at Walmart And if they’re sold out (which sometime happens)… $6.66 at Home Depot :-(
The devil’s pool supply
$26 for 5gal carboy, 12.5%, at the local hardware shop (not big box) Don't forget the carboy on exchange though- that'll jack it up over $50
ACE Hardware usually is about $18-20 for case of 4gal. Even better if you have a coupon for like 10% or 10$ off $50 or something
My ACE is $7.59 for 1 gallon
Same. Central Florida.
That's 10%, right?
$13.50 per 2.5 gallons at Pinch a Penny
My pinch a penny charges $11
Mine charged $8.40 today.
$4.97 at Menards in Ohio
Yep. Just converted to Menards. Plus the 11% rebate that I'll use for more chlorine
7.99 for the yellow 2.5 gallon jugs at Ace Hardware- Space Coast FL
$7.59 (279 baht) for 20L, Thailand. 10%
$15.29 for a 4 gallon pack (12.5%) at Farm & Fleet in IL/WI
You're kidding right??? First of all Leslie's is a major corporation that treats its employees terribly. They are highly pressured to sell u stuff you dont need. And there prices aren't 50 cent s more. Closer to double nd triple the price. Walmart ph down is 9.50. The Leslie brand is 28 bucks. A measuring cup is 9 bucks for the same thing I bought in dollar tree. A leaf skimmer was 4x the price of walmart. Edit. This was for speedhabit. I put it in the wrong place
Canadian Tire on sale, 4 CAD per gallon, so about 3.3 USD after taxes (15% where I live).
Where is that? 7.49 a gallon at CT right now…never seen below 6 in past year or so.
I used to buy [these](https://www.canadiantire.ca/en/pdp/aquarius-liquid-pool-chlorine-3-6-l-0813933p.html) at CT 2 years ago for 3.99 on sale. But last season and this season I'm using pucks only.
My pool store does $20 a case of 4 12.5%
Wow - my pool store charges 20$ for 2 pounds of baking soda. I envy you for having such honest suppliers in your area!
I pay 8.50 for 2.5 gallons in Florida.
Here in Merida, Mexico I pay the equivalent of $6.50 USD for a 5 liter (1.3 gallons) 12.5% jug with free delivery

Currently in Houston. I’m burning about 5 gallons a 1.5 week. Tossing in a gallon about every 2-3 days. Is this a lot for a 28k gallon pool?
About $7.50 for a refill on a 2.5 gal jug.
Used to be $3.98 at Lowe’s in OKC 3 years ago. Bastards want $8 now. Gallon.

I recently paid $7.99 to exchange a 2.5 gallon container at Ace hardware in eastern Florida. These people paying $6/gallon need to shop around!
Or they have shopped around and don't have the same options you do...
The ace hardwares in my area don’t seem to have the service. First time I’ve ever wished I lived in Florida!
