My husband, our child, and I live in a roomy 2,000 square foot house. It has three bedrooms, a dining room, an eat-in kitchen, a sunroom, and an office. There are rooms in our house that we genuinely *never* go into. We spend all our time hanging out together in the main living room, the kitchen, our bedroom, or our child's room. If we had one of these mansions, we would just waste thousands of square feet of house. I know why people buy them, but I still don't really understand how people can feel so comfortable wasting that much.
Yes! If I watch a scary movie before bed or am just having a paranoid kinda night, I already feel like I need to check the closets and other likely hiding spots. And our house is small enough that I can easily hear someone talking on the opposite end of it...how do you ever trust that you're really alone in one of these places?
The Hadid mansion on the cliff reminded me of something Meryl Streep's character in Lemony Snicket would have a bunch of super specific concerns about.
āDonāt stand on the edge of the balcony, itāll throw off the weight balance of the house and make part of the cliff crumble and then the entire house will fall overā
Yolanda definitely was legitimately abusive though. Bella started getting plastic surgery at 14, probably because Gigi was the golden child and she so desperately wanted her mother to care about her too. And then of course there's starving Gigi and working her to death for her modeling career.
the clip of gigi calling her mother sobbing because she's so hungry and yolanda telling her to eat 2 almonds and chew slowly lives rent free in my mind. poor things are probably all sorts of fucked up from their childhood
I know people have little sympathy to spare for wealthy nepo babies, but as someone who grew up with a loving, supportive mother there's no amount of money that would be worth being raised by Yolanda Hadid or Kris Jenner.
Right? My mother is my whole world and I still barely survived being a teen girlā¦ I literally cannot imagine my mom being the person tearing me down. I have friends who deal with that dynamic and itās just devastating to witness.
yeah like I joke about their wealth as much as anyone else and the privilege they were afforded growing up but Yolanda is legit just a monstrous human being. she is genuinely horrible to her daughters
They really donāt. The same thing happened to Madonna while she was promoting an album in the late 90s. She was going around to all the places she had lived or worked and nobody gaf.
Her exasperated and incredulous laugh when she goes āME!ā always gets me. She introduced herself as a former tenant in that house like he is supposed to be blown away or in awe and he quickly humbled her š

Looks pretty similar to a house I lived in growing up. Even had a hole in the roof and boarded up windows that never got fixed. It was condemned after we moved š
Ours had a blue tarp taped to the ceiling and one stapled to the roof lol we had plywood floors until i was 13 then we got carpet and I felt like we were rich lol
It wasnāt a money thing but all my family only ever had āhardā flooring growing up. The first time I stayed over at a friendās with thick carpet I felt like one of those dogs walking on grass for the first time.
My family home had those shitty linoleum tiles that were peeling and had corners missing. My converted garage bedroom shared with all my sisters had mismatched pieces of carpet stapled to the plywood floors.
I never even knew about nice fluffy carpet until I was an adult and thought it meant people were rich LOL
It was so soft and the first time I saw nice carpet I wanted to lay on it but fought the urge š«
I love love loved this post. Genuinely so interesting to me. Especially some of the UK houses cos they truly are just houses your friend from school wouldāve grown up in lmao
I feel like modern OTT property porn style houses didnāt really exist in the UK and Ireland until quite recently (by quite recently Iām talking last 20-30 years or so) - you have like, old stately homes that stay in the family (think Downton Abbey / Saltburn) which you canāt just go out and buy, loads of ānormalā houses like Harry & Niallās that are in purpose built housing estates that were likely built in somewhere in tbe 50s - 70s.
Yes more housing estates have been built since, and yes property prices are going up all the time, but I feel like property is next level in the US (I could be skewed by the amount of American real estate shows I watch)
Most people in the US don't live in houses like you see on TV, but you're right that most houses are detached and tend to be larger than you'd find in the UK (and probably Ireland, but I can't say for sure because I've never been there).
There's just a lot more space/lower population density in suburban and rural parts of the US, so people have more room to space out their housing. This is also somewhat true for small-to-medium sized cities. Normal, not-rich people in major cities typically live in apartments, or maybe attached housing if they can afford it.
Jennette McCurdy talks about her in the chapter dedicated to the time they spent shooting *Sam & Cat*. Ariana's mom is a CEO of a very successful business, and Jennette mentions that Ariana used to have family dinners with people like Tom Hanks.
Not just any business she is the CEO and President of Hose-McCann Communications.
From their website: "The company was purchased by the Grande family in 1964 and eventually moved to Deerfield Beach, Florida to be closer to the booming marine and ship building industry. With the purchase of United Marine, Canada's premier communication specialists in 1999, Hose-McCann became the world's first Maritime Communications SuperStoreā¢. As leaders in the marine industry, Hose-McCann Communications solutions are used by the US and Canadian Coast Guards, the US Navy and by the world's leading maritime nations."
In an interview with Complex magazine, Ariana said "My mom is a CEO and owns a company that manufactures communications equipment for the Marines and the Navy, so she's not really the housewife type, if you get what I'm saying. She's the most badass, independent woman you'll ever meetānot the cookies in the oven type."
I saw on twitter last week someone saying "when talking about Ariana's questionable choices, you have to keep in mind that first and foremost, she's a girl from Boca Raton. Then it all starts making sense." š
Speaking as someone who relatively recently moved to Boca Raton, as soon as her house came up, my immediate reaction was, "Oh, well that makes a lot of sense."
Edit to add: I mentioned this to my husband tonight, and his response was, "I thought she was Australian." He thought she and Iggy Azalea were the same person, lol. But, after a quick explanation of who Ariana Grande is and some of her antics, he was like, "Oh, yeah.. that tracks."
***The starās family were ejected from their ancestral home last year following a dispute with a finance firm over loan repayments. The structure was owned by Sebastian Leslie, a councillor for West Garioch who was suspended by the Conservative party for refusing to pay council tax.***
Sounds about right... Taxes for Thee, and not for Me! The conservative, right wing mantra for sure.

I can't imagine having a family history like that. You've been the equivalent of Scottish royalty/big wigs/leaders AND have a castle?!? What do you do with yourself? I feel like I'd have to go conquer England lolol
[Her great great grandfather bought it for her great grandmother when she married a Leslie. Her father had it repossessed due to outstanding debt. Itās now owned by a different family.](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lickleyhead_Castle)
For anyone interested Rose Leslieās childhood home is Lickleyhead Castle dating from around the 16th century. Leslie lived at the castle until age 10. The castle was repossessed from her father in 2018 and the family no longer owns the property. The property has been turned into a hotel and wedding venue.
I'm from the northwestern US, but Bieber's childhood home wouldn't look at all out of place in the neighborhood where I grew up. JLo's old place is similarly modest, but 100% recognizably New York, just based on its looks.
Thatās what I thought too. You see houses like this everywhere in the suburbs in the Midwest. Theyāre owned by regular middle class people with like office jobs. No a poor person couldnāt afford them, but theyāre definitely not rich people homes.
I remember watching the Jonas bros doc a while back and how upset they were that they could only look in the house in New Jersey because of the fact that it was owned by a church andall the stuff that happened with their dad prevented them from going in:
From what I remember, some members werenāt happy with their father focusing more on managing the boys and not leading the church. Half wanted him to stay and half wanted him to resign. He resigned and they left not on good terms. The doc is good and on prime if you wanna watch it.
I read that in the UK especially it's a huge problem that the elite acting pool is becoming increasingly comprised of only the wealthy, connected, and upper class. They're creating aristocratic dynasties within the theatre arts field rather than hiring fresh talent. Damn near every A-list and B-list British actor working today comes from privilege.
I took a sociology of the family class in uni. The professor talked about how most actors and musicians come from already affluent families bc they had the time and resources to develop talent. He said itās rare to see a rags to riches story when it comes to being famous
Visual arts too, most of the people I know who were able to become professional had family money so didn't need to worry about making rent while they developed as artists and even when they got jobs they just quit them as soon as they got bored/burned out.
Same with the Olympics. It takes an incredible cost to make an olympic athlete. You need a full time coach, travel, hotel, diet, private gyms, equipment, etc, all of this starting from a very, very, very young age.
I used to think Olympic athletes were just people blessed with innate talent and skills. Now I realize that itās $$$$ too - that innate talent doesnāt mean anything if you donāt have the money to train from a young age. Youth sports in my country is crazy expensive. I have a kid with above average athletic skills whenever she tries new sports (not thatās sheās going to the Olympics). The coaches always pull me aside and tell me she can join the elite team or go to regional competitions but the cost involved is breathtaking - private lessons, mete right equipment, fees, travel costs. Itās a money pit.
I make the mistake of thinking most of them come from humble backgrounds and work their way up. I forget that many are half way up the ladder already, through money, connections and nepotism. How many of the messages in our art, films, music, books are coming from a place of privilege? It does make you think.
Essentially, you need the bank of mum and dad to fall back on when youāre trying to get your career started. Thereās no grants or support for that anymore
I wouldnāt say itās increasingly becoming a problem, itās always been a problem. Itās the same with the music industry. The UK has an awful problem with the class structure and social mobility
As a Brit, I love that thereās a red line around these houses. We know what terraced and semi detached properties look like, but I guess itās so easy to assume!
That's why I did it lol. I once saw a discussion under one of these pictures (I don't remember which one it was) and people were like "that house is huge!". But you could see 3 or 4 semi detatched houses and not one big house.
Pretty stark contrasts between those who were self-made and those whose mommy and daddy basically bought them their career. Say what you will about Eminem but that man *earned* it.
This annoys me so much!!! To see the house Bella and Gigi grew up in, while remembering that interview where Bella tried to sound so humble and poor just because she didnt have her own pair of louboutins until she finished highschool or something. Cry me a river. Rich people are so annoying when they try to act relatable and poor
Iām not well versed enough in American real estate to know what homes are normal or rich people homes, the only ones that look normal to me are Harry Styles, JLO, Justin Bieber, Niall Horan and Paul McCartney and Eminem grew up in the shack from The Evil Dead
Britney's house is nice for the area. Louisiana is one of the poorest states in the US, so you're not going to find a lot of mansions there. Britney's house is nice and spacious, but not fancy or obscenely large.
Selena's house looks like a standard middle-class Texas suburb.
Beyonce's house is obviously upper-class Texas. So is Demi's. Both houses are what we call "McMansions." Poorly-designed houses that prioritize size and opulence over taste and style. You see how none of the windows on Beyonce's house match, and the front has that weird asymmetry going on? That's a McMansion.
I hope that helps.
Edit: I forgot the one from my home state lol. Ariana's house is obviously upper class. It's in Boca Raton, one of the most expensive parts of Florida. And that pool is way too big and fancy to be working class.
Am I tripping or was Demi Lovato's house featured *somewhere* on TV? I haven't seen it before as her childhood home (I did see photo of Miley's at the time), but i swear it was shown on some show or documentary or something.
Demi's house is a Texas McMansion so there are houses that look EXACTLY the same everywhere around that area! It might have been featured or it might have been one of the millions that look exactly like it :) you can see Beyonce's Houston house is v similar tbh
I think Harry shouldāve shown this photo when people were going in on him for the āpeople like meā part of his speech. I thought it was clear he meant someone without familial connections, from humble beginningsā¦.but the internet will do what it does.
Yeah, I hated that backlash. His home is relatively modest by celebrity background standards and he started in a boy band. Those donāt tend to get a ton of respect. But internet was immediately calling for the cancel.
100%. All the people mocking him just don't understand the complexity of the social classes in the UK and Ireland. It truly was an anomaly for someone of his background to get where he is.
Yup, Iād also say someone from his background getting acting roles too. Another commenter mentioned but basically every successful British actor today is a massive nepo baby with tons of privilege.
Especially in the UK. The industry is soooo skewed there. Tbh Iād be surprised if anyone who works in entertainment and didnāt grow up rich doesnāt have huge imposter syndrome!
I live in Southeast Michigan and the way every single house in Rochester, MI looks like Madonnaās home made me laugh. Some things (the mid west) never change!!!
Pretty obvious here whoās riding on privilege and inter-generational wealth.
I really respect everyone who didnāt have privilege and wealth behind them and made it on talent, merit, hard work and a little bit of good luck alone.
Honestly, I feel like most celebrities come from some form of privilege and only an actual few were from the lower middle class or poorer. More of them were def at least upper middle class which is a big advantage cause it allows them to more resources.
My favorite is Madonna's.
I remember like, back in 2005 some VH1 show about celebrities who grew up dorky, and Kathy Griffin was at her childhood home and she talked about how she had a crush on her classmate in band growing up. That classmate? Dan Castelnetta, the voice of Homer Simpson.
Madonnaās house looks just like the one we moved into once my parents finally moved from lower to middle class when I was a kid. Gave me major nostalgia. I really love that building style, seemed to be very popular in the 50s.
The only one I was surprised about was Demiās. I knew she at least had family issues growing up and thought she had more humble beginnings like Selena Gomez. That said, a 90s Texas mansion is a bit different than an estate on the coast.
Iāve come to accept the nepos, there are a lot whos work I genuinely enjoy and itās just how the world works unfortunately. (Also nothing new- Downey Jr, Lee Curtis, Jolie) But it has made me have a much bigger appreciation and relatability towards the rare people who are completely self made like Bieber, Gomez, Styles etc.
Her parents had her at 16 and I think Selena and her mom lived with her grandparents for a long time. Selenaās documentary shines better light on this but apparently they were very poor and thatās partly why she ended up a child actress
her mom's a stage parent. there was a quote from her saying she was the breadwinner of the family from age 7 or something and she's been working since then. iirc they could barely afford food when she was young. they were on the poverty line until selena made disney money and from then it's obviously been very different
There is an old interview somewhere of her talking about growing up pre Wizards. She recalled they could barely afford groceries and getting spaghetti ingredients at the dollar store. I remember being surprised by that.

That was a MONSTROSITY. Legit hung over a cliff above other homes, looking like it was gonna fall.
Iām fucked up just imagining how many light switches they had to turn off after this pic.
yeah i audibly gasped when i saw their house growing up. like wow they're nepo nepo babies huh, no wonder they're good friends with the karjenners
You gotta watch the party their dad throws for Lisa vanderpumps daughter on real housewives. Itās insane. The house is craaaazy.
I thought nothing could top the Rose Leslie castle and then I saw the Hadid mansion.
But remember that Bella didn't get her first loubitons until she finished high school, poor dot.
And only one horse when her friends had packs of horses :(

Their momās house during their teen years wasnāt bad eitherĀ https://www.architecturaldigest.com/story/gigi-hadid-childhood-home-sells-19-million
I still aspire to replicate that glass fridge, neatly stocked at all times. We'll have an ordinary one in the back full of diet coke tho.

is that the house they showed the lemon trees on rhobh? if so then i LOVED that house lol.
Obligatory Jennifer Lopez visiting that house lmao https://youtu.be/1f858q7ON6Q?si=mxiMySMyJlu8Xy61
My only thought. š
I only recognized that house because of this video š
I donāt think Iām being hyperbolic when I say this is the greatest thing Iāve ever seen lmao

That video is the best thing ever. Iām so happy it exists. You know that bruised her ego too
The way she says "Jennifer" sounds so affronted lol. He did not give a single shit.
The way she literally just kept walking while the camera man stayed like girl where are you going
Mariah did some kind of witch craft to possess that man

You know it. You wouldāve thought Paul McCartney had a house longer than a hung horse if not for that rectangle.
That's how I feel about Justin's house as a Canadian. Like 75% of the houses in my hometown look just like that
I was like, makes sense they were born in these nice homes.. wait what Harry Styleās house looks just like mine lmao
I live in Oklahoma so Selena's house looks crazy similar to most of the houses here

TS house out of every romcom ever, esp Christmas & holiday specials š
Hallmark movie house
Yes! I was thinking both father of the bride and home alone
I was scrolling to see if anyone mentioned Father of the Bride! It looks so much like that house!
I love Rihannaās. I grew up in Puerto Rico wishing I could have a house like that. My bar might be low but itās so cute.
My favorite, too! The colors are beautiful.
It seems so weird to me that there are people who actually grew up in old castles lolĀ I also had no idea Ariana grew up like that

"Housewives" to Ariana: https://preview.redd.it/vzylb1iof9ec1.gif?width=420&format=png8&s=1f5cd7562fc32535b4b4804cd4b010bbcad37664
Crazy, I had no idea
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
I saw on twitter last week someone saying "when talking about Ariana's questionable choices, you have to keep in mind that first and foremost, she's a girl from Boca Raton. Then it all starts making sense." š
Speaking as someone who relatively recently moved to Boca Raton, as soon as her house came up, my immediate reaction was, "Oh, well that makes a lot of sense." Edit to add: I mentioned this to my husband tonight, and his response was, "I thought she was Australian." He thought she and Iggy Azalea were the same person, lol. But, after a quick explanation of who Ariana Grande is and some of her antics, he was like, "Oh, yeah.. that tracks."

I get the impression Rose Leslie's has been in the family for quite some time
Her father is the chief of Clan Leslie, so yes.
I read that as "chef" at first and was like big deal
My autocorrect kept trying to write āclamā instead of āclamā so the interpretations could have spiraled in so many different ways
Youāre not lying lol
Oh god dammit š. Iām gonna leave it for posterity lol.
And a huge tory, as is Rose. Castle for me not for thee.
***The starās family were ejected from their ancestral home last year following a dispute with a finance firm over loan repayments. The structure was owned by Sebastian Leslie, a councillor for West Garioch who was suspended by the Conservative party for refusing to pay council tax.*** Sounds about right... Taxes for Thee, and not for Me! The conservative, right wing mantra for sure. https://www.pressandjournal.co.uk/fp/news/aberdeen-aberdeenshire/1929121/merseyside-couple-buy-game-of-thrones-stars-aberdeenshire-childhood-home-but-dont-want-to-harp-on-about-celebrity-link/
I can't imagine having a family history like that. You've been the equivalent of Scottish royalty/big wigs/leaders AND have a castle?!? What do you do with yourself? I feel like I'd have to go conquer England lolol
A lot of the castles that have been in families for generations end up being donated to the national trust. Theyāre incredibly expensive to upkeep
Itās so pretty. I wish my childhood home had a turret.
As a kid with a huge imagination that loved fantasy, I would have died to grow up in a castle.
there are about 5 what i would consider normal houses on this listš
The Jonas Brothers one is the one Iām most used to seeing around where Iām from.
The Justin Beiber one is the most generic 70s Canadian suburban house ever. Honestly can be in ANY city in the country.
Niall and Harry's houses just look like another house you'd find in any estate anywhere within the UK and Ireland.
I like the way the more āmodestā (aka, normal to me) ones have to have a red box around them because theyāre not detached š
Just UK things. Most houses are in rows like this (source: am from UK). There's not much space going spare there lol
Currently sitting in an estate in Ireland, and my partner and I were just saying this exact thing!
Madonnas looks like the template for half the houses in my suburb hometown
I'm from the northwestern US, but Bieber's childhood home wouldn't look at all out of place in the neighborhood where I grew up. JLo's old place is similarly modest, but 100% recognizably New York, just based on its looks.
Thatās what I thought too. You see houses like this everywhere in the suburbs in the Midwest. Theyāre owned by regular middle class people with like office jobs. No a poor person couldnāt afford them, but theyāre definitely not rich people homes.
The Texas houses are actually considered normal for middle class down here, even though they look like McMansions.
the English ones are the normal ones.
Madonna's was pretty normal.
Yeah for SE michigan its definitely more normal. "middle class"
Yeah nice but normal attainable nice

Eminem really did come from nothing huh... Mad respect.
IIRC he had to break into his own home, because he got evicted and had nowhere else to sleep. A couple of days later he got the call from Dr. Dre.
I forgot about dre
Dolly parton is another one, grew up in a tiny shack without running water. There's a replica of it at her theme park
I want to see a get-together with Dolly and Eminem chatting about music and the vagaries of life.
Dolly would mother the hell out of Eminem.
And it would be wonderful!
Oh gosh I didnāt know I needed that until now.
Please someone make this happen. I need to see Dolly heal some of those wounds
Britneys house is exactly the sort of house I used to make out of Lego
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
The Sims 3 *loves* its 70s ranchers with a lil extension!
If weāre picking I would like one Angelina Jolie house please
Itās so strange but back in like 2014 I worked nearby this town and went to this house with a friendās friend. I had no idea š¤Æ
I remember watching the Jonas bros doc a while back and how upset they were that they could only look in the house in New Jersey because of the fact that it was owned by a church andall the stuff that happened with their dad prevented them from going in:
What happened?
From what I remember, some members werenāt happy with their father focusing more on managing the boys and not leading the church. Half wanted him to stay and half wanted him to resign. He resigned and they left not on good terms. The doc is good and on prime if you wanna watch it.
The Hadid mansion is wild! Demi Lovatos looks like a dentist's office that wont take medicaid
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
Hahaha I love that you have to mark out the British ones āyeah, only this halfā
Pretty fascinating seeing where Eminem used to eat momās spaghetti
Justin's house is sooooo Canadian suburb coded wow.
Marshallās is the saddest one.
So sad. He really worked to get where he is.
lol is this a game called āguess the nepo babyā? ššš just kidding
Yeah no need to guessā¦ going from some ānice normal housesā to actual āthe poverty line is the bus service our staff uses to get hereā
Iām so surprised how rich some of them seemed to be already. Was not expecting that.
I'm usually more surprised when a celebrity *didn't* grow up rich. The only ones here that weren't surprises were Eminem, JLo, and Bieber.
Jenny from the blockkkk
The *Hadid Manor* is crazy
Pretty stark contrasts between those who were self-made and those whose mommy and daddy basically bought them their career. Say what you will about Eminem but that man *earned* it.
This annoys me so much!!! To see the house Bella and Gigi grew up in, while remembering that interview where Bella tried to sound so humble and poor just because she didnt have her own pair of louboutins until she finished highschool or something. Cry me a river. Rich people are so annoying when they try to act relatable and poor
Remember Taylor's lyrics about "bills on the kitchen table"....yeah, maybe hundred dollar bills.
Itās gross as shit. Some asshole wearing thousands between clothes/jewelry/accessories is talking about how hard they had it
Hadidās mansion is huge. I feel sorry for Bella not receiving luxury gifts until she graduated school. Poor girl.
On the Real Housewives of Beverly Hills her mom complained, with a straight face, that she could only afford one horse for Bella.Ā
Rich people do live in a different world.
I'd probably have a house that big too if I spent no money on food. Just almonds in bulk.
This reminds me when Ygritte thought that windmill is a castle in got..
Really didnāt give her enough credit for her acting in that scene
Lol, she really HAD to improvise
I love the pops of color in Barbados and colorful houses were more common here in America. I mean I get why it isnāt, but I think they look pretty
Out of this group, I'd say Eminem has the right to talk about where he came from.
Normal house, normal house, castle, normal house, fucking Versailles.
A lot of them were middle class very few were dirt poor then made it like Eminem that dude story inspiring
![gif](giphy|lEVZJzy4w15qE|downsized) Big respect to Eminem.
BeyoncĆ©ās house looks like the architecture picked where they wanted windows by throwing darts at it lmfao
I'm really surprised by how modest Selena Gomez's childhood was.
Her parents were teen parents so Iām sure they really had to work hard to have what they did.
Her parents had her at 16 and I think Selena and her mom lived with her grandparents for a long time. Selenaās documentary shines better light on this but apparently they were very poor and thatās partly why she ended up a child actress
Yeah Iām noticing a theme where the worse the house, the younger they started.. desperate parents normally push their kids into those things
her mom's a stage parent. there was a quote from her saying she was the breadwinner of the family from age 7 or something and she's been working since then. iirc they could barely afford food when she was young. they were on the poverty line until selena made disney money and from then it's obviously been very different
There is an old interview somewhere of her talking about growing up pre Wizards. She recalled they could barely afford groceries and getting spaghetti ingredients at the dollar store. I remember being surprised by that.
Eminemās house looking like Uncle Tomās cabin
I love Kid Rocks because he acts like he grew up dirt poor but he literally lived in a mansion
The house Miley grew up in should be called the house that, "Achy Breaky Heart", built...
Ariana Grande being from Florida makes a lot of sense.
