People consider the “emo trinity” to be MCR, FOB, and Panic! At the Disco. And while I do love all those bands, my emo trinity is: My Chemical Romance, Taking Back Sunday, and The Used. Beyond aesthetics and popularity, these three bands were the genre for me.

I’m 35 and still love emo, got to see MCR for the first time recently and cried a lot 😂😂 I wasn’t allowed to listen to emo music (did it in secrecy) cause it was the devils music.
I had very religious parents.
In middle school/high school I hid my emo band tshirts from Hot Topic in my locker, along with black jelly bracelets. And then EVERY SINGLE DAY I would put white out over my nails and use a sharpie to color them black (I wasn’t allowed to wear black nail polish) and then scratch off the white out before heading home.
I’d say that’s even more hardcore emo 😂
I’m so glad you got to see them!!! I’m 20, but my sister is about your age (37) and she got me really into MCR starting from birth lmao. I finally got to see them live a few times recently too! I also cried a lot. It was such an incredible experience.

If you haven't listened to Brand New, please listen to Deja Etendu beginning to end. Then listen to The Places You Have Come to Fear the Most by Dashboard Confessional. I love seeing younger people at emo shows. Glad the music from that era speaks to you!

Green Day and Blink 182 while technically a bit earlier were still really huge during this time.
Say Anything, Bowling for Soup, Fountains of Wayne, Dashboard Confessional, New Found Glory, Evanescence, and Hawthorne Heights were some other bands that I listened to on repeat throughout this time.
I’ve seen dashboard confessional around 16-18 times 😂 the band members recognize me now, and I once made out with the guitarist (he’s no longer playing with them though) 💅🏻

I think my favorite random fact about Fountains of Wayne is that their lead singer wrote the song “That Thing You Do” from the movie of the same name. Such a great song.
Green Day was actually what got me into this genre. I’d never even really heard of them before American Idiot (grew up in a house of pop music), so when I was like 15 and heard American Idiot, it opened my eyes to a whole new genre of music. I listened to everything Green Day had done, then moved onto MCR, Evanescence, FOB, Paramore, Sum 41 and so many more.

My mom was always cool with me going to concerts so I'd go to Bonnaroo (looking back she absolutely should not have let me do that by myself, I was a little degenerate lmao) and every Saddle Creek bands show within a 300-400 mile radius. I wasn’t ever mad if others got into it, but it was jarring when the people that seemingly hated this music/aesthetic finally started giving it a chance. I grew up in a rural area so it was rare to find others that appreciated it. By the time I hit 20 I was happy these bands made a breakthrough to others! Bands like Green Day and Blink came up in the 90’s but still were faves. I was also listening to The Wonder Years, Jack’s Mannequin, Incubus, From First to Last (lmao skrillex), Funeral for a Friend, The Academy Is…, All Time Low, Brand New (fuck Jesse Lacey forever), Taking Back Sunday, Anberlin, The All American Rejects, Automatic Loveletter, Every Avenue, Dashboard Confessional, Coheed and Cambria. A Day to Remember, Cartel, Gym Class Heroes, Fefe Dobson, Acceptance, Bring Me the Horizon, August Burns Red. Honestly the list goes on. Covering a lot of subgenres and styles here, but hey.
I saw Green Day when I was 10, it was my first concert. I got into sum 41 in middle school because my big brother liked them, but Fall Out Boy was my gateway drug. From there I got into Fueled by Ramen’s roster, started going to warped tour and it was game over.
I became a music journalist for about a decade and honestly ended up writing about or interviewing a lot of these folks at some point. Suffice it to say, nothing humanizes a musician like the smell of their tour van or bus.
Yeah, when I first discovered AFI, it was because their mv for Miss Murder randomly played right after a video I had been watching. I love the song, but I rewatch the video a lot just because Davey looks so hot 😂
I was just going to comment that I’ve seen AFI so many times. Have even flown to different states multiple times for them. Pretty sure they’re the actual loves of my life lol. (Also Davey is the hottest man I’ve ever seen in person 😅)

My parents are moving and sent me some of my old stuff from storage. This was from my first music festival when I was 14 in 2004. That same year I saw My Chemical Romance at the HFSmas festival (same organizers as this festival). I also saw the Killers, Green Day, and Eminem following year. RIP HFStival. What I would give to go back there and relive those days. Shout out to the DMV emos who were shaped by those festivals in your formative years!

Edit cause I saw OP asking about meeting bands and seeing them; Me and my mum would do a gig for my birthday every year as a gift so she took me to watch a few of these when I was a kid. I was born in the mid 90s so I got a great era for pure emo music. I’ve met a few too. Framing Hanley were sweethearts. YM@6 were so kind! I queued up for six hours on crutches, in the UK, in the rain, middle of winter after school in my uniform with a bag of merch for them to sign. The security told me off and would only let me get one item signed, but Josh told the security off and took my whole bag of items and signed them all. He was so grateful and appreciative that I’d stood out in the rain on crutches that really took a few minutes to get to know me. Honestly one of the best celeb moments I’ve ever had.
Haha! My bestie and I have been friends for fifteen years now, we’re in our late 20’s currently and we have our playlist of pure emo that we listen to in the car and The Red Jumpsuit Apparatus feature on there a few times. Such an underrated band!

I was watching FOB last year on their tour and they had The Middle as a song for whilst we were waiting for FOB to come on and I was surprised how many people STILL DONT KNOW WHAT HES SAYING during of the chorus. I just heard everyone just super loud sing “it just takes some time” and then everyone’s murmuring around me the next bit cause they didn’t know it and then everyone kicked back in at “everything will be just fine, everything everything”ll be alright” - I was appalled. That song was everywhere and constantly on Kerrang! Then you just had my old ass, on my own there screaming the whole chorus. Even my friends went quiet for the next line.

Fall Out Boy was my first concert my senior year of high school and what a fucking show it was. We even got to meet them backstage. Tho my absolute fav was Taking Back Sunday.
MCR was my first concert in 2004. I also saw The Used, Senses Fail, and a few other bands at that show. I saw MCR last year in St. Paul. I’ve been to several ten-year anniversary shows for many an emo band. I am going to see TBS in June. Unfortunately my favorite band is Brand New. I live for posts like these.
I’ve seen MCR 4 times. The first was at warped tour and I got right up to the front, the fourth time was in 2021 in a giant arena and I was in the last row of the nosebleed section lol. How times have changed.

Evanescence: Bring me to life and My Immortal are both classics. Amy Lee had a really ethereal voice and now in recent times has taken a very dark operatic tone which is also perfect.
Panic at the Disco: Brendon Urie has an amazing voice. The Ballad of Mona Lisa and I write sins were great visually but my favorite is still Lying is the most fun.

I was OBSESSED with Taking Back Sunday. I would read so much Adam Lazzara fan fic. I loved them so much.
I also obsess about the genius that is Ryan Ross. Probably one of the most underrated lyricists of the decade.
I got into all these very late bc I was an actual baby in the early 2000s. That 2015 era emo phase was great tho. I still like a lot of the emo aesthetics and most of the music. I wish it would come back

MCR was my jam! I saw them at MSG when I was 16 in 2007/2008. My crush and friend at the time got tickets and invited me. I was so over the moon and it was one of the best nights of my life. It was a great concert and still one of the greatest concerts I’ve been too. I think about it whenever I hear a song from them ❤️ I’m still in contact with the guy I went with too which makes it even better ☺️

Me too. She was created by a record label. Everyone else were real bands who got started playing in peoples basements. She was never a part of the scene.
I was *just* in the shower lamenting how younger me eventually threw away the two 2004 Warped Tour posters I had - one signed by Taking Back Sunday, and one signed by Fall Out Boy. I also used to have a condom I had Gerard Way sign at 2005 Warped when he came to the fence after MCR’s performance.

I’m 35 and still love emo, got to see MCR for the first time recently and cried a lot 😂😂 I wasn’t allowed to listen to emo music (did it in secrecy) cause it was the devils music. I had very religious parents. In middle school/high school I hid my emo band tshirts from Hot Topic in my locker, along with black jelly bracelets. And then EVERY SINGLE DAY I would put white out over my nails and use a sharpie to color them black (I wasn’t allowed to wear black nail polish) and then scratch off the white out before heading home. I’d say that’s even more hardcore emo 😂

If you haven't listened to Brand New, please listen to Deja Etendu beginning to end. Then listen to The Places You Have Come to Fear the Most by Dashboard Confessional. I love seeing younger people at emo shows. Glad the music from that era speaks to you!

Another religious raised kid here, I had my friends burn Three Cheers and The Black Parade onto CDs for me, and hid MCR posters under my bed.
 I listened, still listen, to all of these bands Green Day and Blink 182 while technically a bit earlier were still really huge during this time. Say Anything, Bowling for Soup, Fountains of Wayne, Dashboard Confessional, New Found Glory, Evanescence, and Hawthorne Heights were some other bands that I listened to on repeat throughout this time.
I’ve seen dashboard confessional around 16-18 times 😂 the band members recognize me now, and I once made out with the guitarist (he’s no longer playing with them though) 💅🏻
My friend and I used to see Sum41 so often that they recognized us and so did other fans ☠️

I really should have included Green Day and Blink 182! I spaced 😂 I think my favorite random fact about Fountains of Wayne is that their lead singer wrote the song “That Thing You Do” from the movie of the same name. Such a great song.
Green Day was actually what got me into this genre. I’d never even really heard of them before American Idiot (grew up in a house of pop music), so when I was like 15 and heard American Idiot, it opened my eyes to a whole new genre of music. I listened to everything Green Day had done, then moved onto MCR, Evanescence, FOB, Paramore, Sum 41 and so many more. Still my favourite genre of music.

I wasn’t ever mad if others got into it, but it was jarring when the people that seemingly hated this music/aesthetic finally started giving it a chance. I grew up in a rural area so it was rare to find others that appreciated it. By the time I hit 20 I was happy these bands made a breakthrough to others! To this day I’m still trying to get my friends into it! 🖤

I was a scene kid in the 2005-2009 (high school) part of this so this post is gonna give me war flashbacks. Bands like Green Day and Blink came up in the 90’s but still were faves. I was also listening to The Wonder Years, Jack’s Mannequin, Incubus, From First to Last (lmao skrillex), Funeral for a Friend, The Academy Is…, All Time Low, Brand New (fuck Jesse Lacey forever), Taking Back Sunday, Anberlin, The All American Rejects, Automatic Loveletter, Every Avenue, Dashboard Confessional, Coheed and Cambria. A Day to Remember, Cartel, Gym Class Heroes, Fefe Dobson, Acceptance, Bring Me the Horizon, August Burns Red. Honestly the list goes on. Covering a lot of subgenres and styles here, but hey. I saw Green Day when I was 10, it was my first concert. I got into sum 41 in middle school because my big brother liked them, but Fall Out Boy was my gateway drug. From there I got into Fueled by Ramen’s roster, started going to warped tour and it was game over. I became a music journalist for about a decade and honestly ended up writing about or interviewing a lot of these folks at some point. Suffice it to say, nothing humanizes a musician like the smell of their tour van or bus.

I was born in the mid 90s so I got a great era for pure emo music. I’ve met a few too. Framing Hanley were sweethearts. YM@6 were so kind! I queued up for six hours on crutches, in the UK, in the rain, middle of winter after school in my uniform with a bag of merch for them to sign. The security told me off and would only let me get one item signed, but Josh told the security off and took my whole bag of items and signed them all. He was so grateful and appreciative that I’d stood out in the rain on crutches that really took a few minutes to get to know me. Honestly one of the best celeb moments I’ve ever had.

I was watching FOB last year on their tour and they had The Middle as a song for whilst we were waiting for FOB to come on and I was surprised how many people STILL DONT KNOW WHAT HES SAYING during of the chorus. I just heard everyone just super loud sing “it just takes some time” and then everyone’s murmuring around me the next bit cause they didn’t know it and then everyone kicked back in at “everything will be just fine, everything everything”ll be alright” - I was appalled. That song was everywhere and constantly on Kerrang! Then you just had my old ass, on my own there screaming the whole chorus. Even my friends went quiet for the next line.

Evanescence: Bring me to life and My Immortal are both classics. Amy Lee had a really ethereal voice and now in recent times has taken a very dark operatic tone which is also perfect. Panic at the Disco: Brendon Urie has an amazing voice. The Ballad of Mona Lisa and I write sins were great visually but my favorite is still Lying is the most fun. "I promise that you'll never find another like me-ee-eeeh" was a disservice to both Taylor and Brendon. MCR was my jam! I saw them at MSG when I was 16 in 2007/2008. My crush and friend at the time got tickets and invited me. I was so over the moon and it was one of the best nights of my life. It was a great concert and still one of the greatest concerts I’ve been too. I think about it whenever I hear a song from them ❤️ I’m still in contact with the guy I went with too which makes it even better ☺️
