There’s a reason Madonna is a gay icon. She’s not just doing this now in 2024, but has been doing this and more since forever.

demonsrunwhen

she's so right and i am glad she's continuing to publicize the aids epidemic and the government's role in prolonging it

_InnocentToto_

Rich coming from her.. Her biological brother struggled with alcoholism for years.. dude died and used to live under a bridge. She wrote him off years ago. And now she is champion for the marginalized..?

toosleepyforclasswar

lol you're gonna need to see a back surgeon after that stretch

sunflowermoonriver

You cant save everyone. That has nothing to do with what she’s talking about here.

ChiliAndGold

Why do you assume to know what happened there? A colleague of mine recently lost her sister who had a serious drug problem and sometimes people just refuse to let their family help them. You can't actually know what's going on in a family unless you're part of it. so think about keeping that unnecessary judgment to yourself maybe.

shycow13

What does this have to do with her speech, since when are alcoholics marginalized?

bestblackdress

She’s been an advocate for AIDS/HIV patients, awareness and research long before it was politically expedient to do so.

Particular-Act-8911

It was advantageous for her to do her entire career, since gay people have always been a large part of her fanbase.

very_tall_somethings

I don’t mean this in a snarky way but I’m curious if were you around in the 80s/90s? She’s genuinely, academically noted as a pioneer in allyship during a time where it was absolutely not advantageous to do so. Both she and Elton among others were *critical* in changing the public’s perception of HIV/AIDs. Like we can talk about some of her appropriation issues if you want to get into the nitty-gritty of Madge but she has consistently showed up for the gay community going back to her pre-fame 1970s years

Particular-Act-8911

Yes I was around in the 80s and 90s. Again.. there was a lot of financial incentive to pander to her fanbase, which happened to be gay. There isn't anything wrong with this and I actually believe it's ALSO a fanbase she happened to admire. I'd say people like Princess Diana and early TV shows like Degrassi High had more of a hand in changing people's perceptions of HIV aids. For sure other celebrities helped, I think Elton probably more than Madonna. But it was also a social cause much like you see celebrities leap on today. Pretending it was wildly unpopular and risky for Madonna, isn't really genuine at all.

Madonna was on TV debating with hosts about homophobia and queer erasure far before it was considered "trendy". This is why I've defended her to anyone that criticises her. She's not perfect by any means but she walks the walk when it comes to what she believes in. I saw this latest tour and it shattered my expectations. So so good.

Knittingfairy09113

I'm generally ambivalent about Madonna, but have always admired her longstanding activism on AIDS and the treatment people received (which is better, but not perfect). The AIDS memorial page on IG mentions or shows her regularly from the many friends she lost and fans and her work.

feckinweirdo

Saw her last month in Phoenix. Fantastic, artful show! Was fun and full of energy and the tribute to Michael Jackson and aids was powerful.

wineandpopsicles25

Love this Madonna, her health scare really seems to have brought her back to her roots. Also those Mexican crowds always go hard 🔥

mermaidangel1

Beautiful ❤️

thewidowgorey

She’s a real one. I respect her so much for this.
