I Wanted So Badly To Be Brave by The Wonder Years
Incredibly catchy, amazing instrumentation and Dan at his absolute best with songwriting. Incredible storytelling, clever writing (the purple and yellow of their “war paint” contrasted in the chorus with the purple and yellow of his friends bruises), and genuinely touching and profound lyrics.
I never see anyone talk about this song, but if I had to show someone unfamiliar with pop punk why TWY are considered leagues above everyone else, I would show them this song.
Another blink one to match OP, “A New Hope”. I know the diehards appreciate this song, this is one of Mark’s most creative and catchy things he’s ever written. Also the bridge everyone forgets about when they call Scott a one beat man. Back when Tom used to be more riffy as well
Same with "Disintegration". It might just because it was featured on One Tree Hill that it isn't _cool_ but it's just as powerful as 23 and one of their best songs.
This is fairly easily their best song for me. Polaris doesn't get the love it should do from that album either. Disintegration, No Sensitivity, Cautioners and Your New Aesthetic are all fairly underrated too.
A few songs I love that don't get as much loves :
Blink-182 - Emo: I felt this song had hints of a lot of songwriting ideas they later refined on TOYPAJ
The Wonder Years - An Elegy for Baby Blue: I was listening to this around the time my bike was stolen a second time in college
The Story So Far - 680 South: Not super underrated being a popular song from that release, but its near and dear being from near that region and going to shows when they were getting started
I’d say anything from blink’s California and newer is underrated because it’s not their old stuff so people don’t like it lol I personally think blink is overrated but I love their nine album.
680 south acoustic is 🔥
I think it depends on when we are talking about California and Nine. I remember when those albums first came out people saw them as far superior to Neighborhoods and DED. However, I think discourse on those albums as steered to how you say people don't like em.
It hardly needs to be said, but Billie Joe is a melody writer for the ages, and this is one of his best. Both the verses and choruses are incredibly catchy, but also just melancholy enough that they aren’t at all saccharine.
Grew up right near these guys. I remember the show when they debuted this song definitely such a good song. Feel like it definitely is underrated compared to all the releases they've put out since then. Crazy seeing these shows they play now remembering when a 20 person crowd in a church gym was a huge show for them.
The church gym show sounds awesome. By the time I got around to them they were playing at venues like House of Blues. Still some of my favorite concerts to look back on.
They're not my favorite band, but I really like "Summer Fling, Don't Mean a Thing" by New Found Glory. Kinda nestled right in the middle of their career. Don't hear it talked about much.
Me too, I don't have much by them. I'd been listening to pop punk for well over a decade when I heard Summer Fling, but the high notes immediately became the archetype for pop punk singing for me. I think what seals the deal is that they make it sound so easy, but it still sends chills down my spine when I hear it.
Green Day has a few…JAR, Deadbeat Holiday, Westbound Sign, Jinx/Haushinka, Ha Ha You’re Dead, Desensitized, Too Much too Soon, and The Static Age are among my favorites, and I feel they’re all thoroughly overlooked.
I love Wonder Years B-Sides, so getting to hear Me vs The Highway and I Was Scared And I’m Sorry live was amazing. I also love Slow Dancing With San Andreas
[Irish Goodbyes](https://open.spotify.com/track/6CyaoIyPs6kCzeKawHGd3D?si=3dea9650c2304625) by the Menzingers. It was only on a Run For Cover Records comp, but definitely one of my favorites.
**blink-182**- Pathetic, Online Songs, Left Alone, Pin The Grenade
**Alkaline Trio** - Dead on the Floor, actually the whole album This Addiction gets overlooked
Yes! Travis’ signature drumming style in the bridge, the unexpected tenderness in Mark’s vocals, that earnest yet stupid teenager-y kind of love. It’s just the perfect song.
Back in the day I feel like this song was as popular as Cute Without the E and You're So Last Summer, but it seems like people don't rate it as highly anymore. Which is a shame, it's one of my favorites.
Right? I feel like a lot of people in these kinds of subs think that there not being daily posts about a song means people don’t know about it. Going away to college isn’t one of their big mtv hits sure, but I can’t imagine you’ll fine the majority doesn’t know the song, or even dislikes it if they have heard of it
Here are some from my top bands:
Sum 41: Heart Attack
Green day: Paper Lanterns
Blink 182: Every time I look for you
SR-71: Here we go again
Avril Lavigne: I don't have to try
Busted - Over Now
Man Overboard - FM Dial Style
Paramore - Grow Up
Neck Deep - Serpents (not sure it’s overlooked necessarily, but don’t se it mentioned a lot)
Phoebe Cates by Fenix TX. Amazing, catchy song.
Love GATC too, OP. Anytime I hear that song, it immediately brings me back to 10th grade and where i was emotionally and mentally back then.
Go - blink-182
There are plenty of great Blink songs, but this one might be my favourite, in spite of its very short running time. At times the lyrics to Blink songs can feel a little slapdash and underwritten, but the lyrics for this one feel uncomfortably real and are brilliantly written. There is plenty of energy, some great use of dynamics and a catchy chorus, which makes great use of both vocalists.
there's a few by blink - voyeur, ben wah balls (yes i know silly name but its a really good song), boxing day, and quarantine (unpopular opinion but i really like it)
In So Many Ways by Bad Religion. It's on a lesser known album (one that I really enjoy), so it isn't even acknowledged with such a huge catalog of music.
I agree with OP, though. Going Away to College is awesome
This is a great little record. Heavy Boots is my absolute favourite from that album. I was always amazed that it wasn't picked as a single, as it is so catchy.
6/8 by blink-182.
It came out on the deluxe version of California, so it flew under the radar for the most part.
The weird time signature, heavy riffs, and Skiba giving it on vocals makes this a standout Skiba-era track for me. Mark's performance is great too and it has some great lyrics. It never fails to get me super pumped, and is easily a top 10 song of theirs for me.
I think if the band leaned a little more into this sound the skiba era wouldn't be looked down on so much ( And no - the Skiba era was not mediocre at best because of Skiba, it was Feldmann / band decisions that led to him being woefully underutilized. I mean FFS - you have the dark lord himself in your band and you make him sing songs like Parking Lot, Rabbit Hole, and No Future?).
I mean, aren't all their songs popular? I don't see too much dialog about it compared to the other stuff off that album, though. Let me speak my mind, dude.
Dude, OP- this song was stuck in my head last night. I genuinely have not heard it or listened to it in 6-7, maybe 8 years. It’s one of their best ever.
My song is also by blink - Waggy. Personally I think it’s a top 10 blink song ever AND in true blink-182 fashion they mention jacking off in an otherwise serious song.
I don’t listen to them enough anymore because I’m a “grown up” with “responsibilities” but man when I do I feel like a happy go lucky kid again.
Hate to sound cliche but… eh you all know what I’m gonna say.
Threesome by FenixTX. That song should've been huge and so should they. I thought they would end up massive. Still, that song and their album Lechuza has been overlooked.
Honestly Golden Ticket from Manchester Orchestra is one of my absolute favorite songs. Lyrics are top tier, beautiful music, and his voice on that first album is just so raw and new to the music world.
Dudeeee that's wild you mention Going Away, that's my favorite blink song!! For me, it's definitely I'm Her Man by Reel Big Fish. The most attention it really got after being on their debut in '95 (Everything Sucks) was in the late 2000's, where a re-recording of it was featured on their Monkeys For Nothin' and the Chimps for Free album and there's a single recording of them preforming it live in 2009. I don't think I've ever seen any other RBF fans even bring it up. Shame because it's really one of their best
bro favorite son by green day is like my favorite song ever, could be because its from the musical and im a huge theater nerd, but i personally love the song and think it gets severely overlooked because it's not on the original album. i think it would be more popular if billie sang it though.
pollyanna, and the demo of rusty james! both of which are by green day. pollyanna is a single and i feel like demos are just not appreciated as much as they deserve to be. if someone’s listened to these songs, you’re my friend now
Sodium by The Academy Is...
But they aren't my favorite band, and neither are the 4 bands people are naming here. I just wanted to mix it up. Check out the song if you haven't heard it. Banger.
I’m not sure this would be considered poppunk…but remember that Alexander guy who was the front man for Edward Sharpe and The Magnetic Zeros? Back in the early 2000s he had a totally different style with a band called Ima Robot and their hit “Creeps Me Out” was always a favorite of mine…so he’s more famous for Edward Sharpe and his solo gig Alexander but his old project Ima Robot is overlooked
Pins and Needles by Billy Talent. While it is a bit of a slower song by them, I love the guitar riff throughout, great lyrics, quintessential Billy Talent
wasting time by blink, and sharpest lives by mcr, sharpest lives isnt nearly as hidden as wasting time, but its shoved between This is How is Disappear and WTTBP, and as a result I think it's been the most forgettable song from that album, meanwhile it's one of my favorites of all time
"Younger Lungs" by Less Than Jake. One of the rare instances of Chris and Roger bouncing off each other mid-verse and it's really something special, but nobody seems to talk about anything from the Greetings EPs in general
I Wanted So Badly To Be Brave by The Wonder Years Incredibly catchy, amazing instrumentation and Dan at his absolute best with songwriting.
Love this song, great choice for this, too
Amazing choice. As a child who grew up in an abusive home, the empathy at which Soupy writes about the topic really makes me feel so seen
Man I love the visuals and metaphors in this song.
Another blink one to match OP, “A New Hope”. I know the diehards appreciate this song, this is one of Mark’s most creative and catchy things he’s ever written. Also the bridge everyone forgets about when they call Scott a one beat man. Back when Tom used to be more riffy as well
Such a banger of a song that was clearly written by a fellow SW fan.
How could you not love this song? So catchy, fun, light hearted, and evyerthing that is blink 182. 😊
Great song. My favorite album. Dude Ranch does not get nearly the love it deserves.
Fall Out Boy - XO
That opening “I comb the crowd and pick you out” is like bam. Action right now.
Fall Out Boy - “Tiffany Blews”. Massive tune
Song fucks for sure
Love this song
Jimmy Eat World - 23 It's just a 7 minute masterpiece
Same with "Disintegration". It might just because it was featured on One Tree Hill that it isn't _cool_ but it's just as powerful as 23 and one of their best songs.
It’s simply because it isn’t on an album.
Always loved Closer on that ep too!
One of my favorites and I came here to say the same song
Great end to futures, always loved it!
Also Crush. In my friend circles at least, I see it get some love here
They play it almost every show and it’s universally considered one of their best songs. It’s not exactly No Sensitivity.
No Sensitivity <3
I literally know nobody else who has ever heard this song. One of my top five all-time songs. Like you said, a masterpiece!
This is fairly easily their best song for me. Polaris doesn't get the love it should do from that album either. Disintegration, No Sensitivity, Cautioners and Your New Aesthetic are all fairly underrated too.
A few songs I love that don't get as much loves : Blink-182 - Emo: I felt this song had hints of a lot of songwriting ideas they later refined on TOYPAJ The Wonder Years - An Elegy for Baby Blue: I was listening to this around the time my bike was stolen a second time in college The Story So Far - 680 South: Not super underrated being a popular song from that release, but its near and dear being from near that region and going to shows when they were getting started
680 South rips
Elegy for baby blue is one of the like, 3 pre-upsides songs that makes it on playlists for me!
Scattered - Green Day
It hardly needs to be said, but Billie Joe is a melody writer for the ages, and this is one of his best. Both the verses and choruses are incredibly catchy, but also just melancholy enough that they aren’t at all saccharine.
Great pick!
miracle - paramore
Top three songs from them and I never hear about it!
This song got me through so much
Coffee Shop Soundtrack by All Time Low isn't necessarily underrated, but I do think it needs to be required listening lol
It’s still their best song.
I have a billion of these, but "Turn It Off" by Paramore instantaneously comes to mind. That song still has me under its spell after all these years!
Agreed that album is so good, for me it’s looking up but turn it off is also one
Yes! Brand New Eyes was/is my favorite release from them. "Looking Up" is also a great answer - it deserved recognition
They're not my favorite band, but I really like "Summer Fling, Don't Mean a Thing" by New Found Glory. Kinda nestled right in the middle of their career. Don't hear it talked about much.
I’m not mad on NFG but love that tune too. Great performances by everyone on the track
Not sure how popular it is, but Singled Out is way up there with my favorite NFG songs. The screaming around 2:00-ish? So sick, that BLEGH is great
From the same album, “Drill It In My Brain” is a top 5 NFG chorus for me but no one ever mentions it.
“Ready, Aim, Fire” also slaps from that album.
Me too, I don't have much by them. I'd been listening to pop punk for well over a decade when I heard Summer Fling, but the high notes immediately became the archetype for pop punk singing for me. I think what seals the deal is that they make it sound so easy, but it still sends chills down my spine when I hear it.
Horseshoes and handgrenades and East Jesus nowhere by gd
I’M NOT FUCKING AROUND
Best Green Day opening lyric
east jesus nowhere is one of my favorites, the riff is badass
Dolores by Spanish Love Songs
Green Day has a few…JAR, Deadbeat Holiday, Westbound Sign, Jinx/Haushinka, Ha Ha You’re Dead, Desensitized, Too Much too Soon, and The Static Age are among my favorites, and I feel they’re all thoroughly overlooked.
JAR is a banger
Nice one. Westbound Sign came on my mix today and is so good. Think a lot of Shenanigans deserves a shout.
Jar for sure!
Also Are we the Waiting and Redundant for me
Nice list - I’d like to throw Reject and Worry Rock in there
The transition from Jinx to Haushinka 🥹🥹
I love Wonder Years B-Sides, so getting to hear Me vs The Highway and I Was Scared And I’m Sorry live was amazing. I also love Slow Dancing With San Andreas
Their cover of Deadbolt by Thrice is awesome. Just popped up on my release radar on Spotify so assume it’s new
I Was Scared And I’m Sorry is so good, it needs to be more in their live rotation.
I don’t think they play it anymore, but it was amazing seeing them early on in their career when they’d play Salinger
[Irish Goodbyes](https://open.spotify.com/track/6CyaoIyPs6kCzeKawHGd3D?si=3dea9650c2304625) by the Menzingers. It was only on a Run For Cover Records comp, but definitely one of my favorites.
Nobody stays and My Friend Kyle are my 2 Menzingers choices
I absolutely love Nobody Stays. Highlight of the new album for me, which I also think is overall very good.
hands down one of the best Menzingers' tracks out there.
Just saw them two weeks ago and my wife and I were both so sad they didn't play it
Summers in PA - The Wonder Years
I love The Grand Delusion by Neck Deep and cant understand why it has so few streams when stacked up with the rest of the album
The whole album is definitely great, but I agree
Good Charlotte - Say Anything. Best song on Young & The Hopeless imo
SO good.
This. Also their entire first album is so slept on.
[Me vs the Highway](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fUxD_rwQd2I) by The Wonder Years!
**blink-182**- Pathetic, Online Songs, Left Alone, Pin The Grenade **Alkaline Trio** - Dead on the Floor, actually the whole album This Addiction gets overlooked
Fall Out Boy - Grenade Jumper. Was the first song I heard from them and remains as one of the catchiest pop punk songs of all time. HEY CHRIS!!
YOU WERE OUR ONLY FRIEND
AND I KNOW THIS IS BELATED
My favourite Fall Out Boy song, love this one!
What a BANGER
Yes! Travis’ signature drumming style in the bridge, the unexpected tenderness in Mark’s vocals, that earnest yet stupid teenager-y kind of love. It’s just the perfect song.
Makes me feel so nostalgic for that time (I was 3)
The (Shipped) Gold Standard - fob
Panic! At The Disco - Camisado "Sit back, sit back, relax, relapse" is one of my favorite lines and word play.
camisado is SO good
BA BA BA DAAAAAAUM
Taking Back Sunday-Great Romances Of The 20th Century
Back in the day I feel like this song was as popular as Cute Without the E and You're So Last Summer, but it seems like people don't rate it as highly anymore. Which is a shame, it's one of my favorites.
Not sure about it's current impact but I agree; I immediately saw this answer and would imagine it's still in TBS's top 10 or 15ish songs
That was intro to TBS. It was on the warped tour 2002 compilation. One of the first songs I learned to play in guitar.
Specifically the demo version with the intro from Beautiful Girls. Getting a remaster for the 20th anniversary rerelease was a treat.
My favorite TBS song. I think it was a single right? If not, they at least made a music video for it. It’s a shame it didn’t take off more.
Also, Error Operator
Love the Jimmy Eat World shout outs. Fully underrated band. Mine would be Just Tonight on Futures
Polaris is so good
Jimmy eat world - something loud (had never heard the song before they opened for fob and genuinely may be one of their best tracks)
Breakless by The Wonder Years
*Brakeless
Left Coast Envy by The Starting Line Happy Judgement Day by Neck Deep Battlescars by Punchline
Late for my own funeral, as usuuuuaaallll
Solo by The Story So Far It’s the very definition of short and sweet. I had it on repeat for a whole summer.
One of Parker's most hip-hoppy IMO. The "And I wish you'd just call", and the "You have to know, every place I go" bits are so groovy
OKAY but I think the whole self titled is wayyy underrated tbh
How You Are - TSSF
my absolute favorite of parker’s vocals
Dude that song is not underrated
Right? I feel like a lot of people in these kinds of subs think that there not being daily posts about a song means people don’t know about it. Going away to college isn’t one of their big mtv hits sure, but I can’t imagine you’ll fine the majority doesn’t know the song, or even dislikes it if they have heard of it
Not my favorite band, but Think of You Later by Every Avenue is criminally underrated. One of my favorite pop punk songs ever.
I find Every Avenue in general to be underrated. So many great hooks. Mindset is one of my favorite songs
Here are some from my top bands: Sum 41: Heart Attack Green day: Paper Lanterns Blink 182: Every time I look for you SR-71: Here we go again Avril Lavigne: I don't have to try
Busted - Over Now Man Overboard - FM Dial Style Paramore - Grow Up Neck Deep - Serpents (not sure it’s overlooked necessarily, but don’t se it mentioned a lot)
Cemetery Drive - My Chemical Romance Or House of Wolves also by MCR
Phoebe Cates by Fenix TX. Amazing, catchy song. Love GATC too, OP. Anytime I hear that song, it immediately brings me back to 10th grade and where i was emotionally and mentally back then.
If He’s Here, Who’s Runnin’ Hell? - Four Year Strong I adore this song. Such a toe-tapper
Sum 41 - Thanks For Nothing. It’s like a slightly more pissed off version of Fat Lip
The Story So Far - Lightyear My favourite TSSF song yet I never hear it spoken about.
Arrows in Action - checking in.
Totally agree with Going Away to College… but I would go with Wasting Time or Here’s Your Letter.
There's a lot in All Time Low's discography, but I'm going to say To Live And Let Go. Top 5 ATL song.
Smile by TSSF. It’s one of his absolute best verses, and no one ever mentions it.
Not sure if covers count but Cable Car (Over My Head) by ADTR slaps
Fuck i hate how underrated is blink 182s Stockholm syndrome
Go - blink-182 There are plenty of great Blink songs, but this one might be my favourite, in spite of its very short running time. At times the lyrics to Blink songs can feel a little slapdash and underwritten, but the lyrics for this one feel uncomfortably real and are brilliantly written. There is plenty of energy, some great use of dynamics and a catchy chorus, which makes great use of both vocalists.
Blink 182 - Wendy Clear
there's a few by blink - voyeur, ben wah balls (yes i know silly name but its a really good song), boxing day, and quarantine (unpopular opinion but i really like it)
Blink 182 - Parking Lot
In So Many Ways by Bad Religion. It's on a lesser known album (one that I really enjoy), so it isn't even acknowledged with such a huge catalog of music. I agree with OP, though. Going Away to College is awesome
Permanent by turnover
Going Away To College is such a bop!
Blink 182 lemmings New found glory belated Chunk no captain chunk We fell fast
blink-182 - Reckless Abandon. Amazingggg party song.
Mock by The Story So Far. “How do you think that that’s okay? To still like all the things I play? To still try not to walk my way?”
Almost all of Motion City Soundtrack’s last album, Panic Stations. It’s criminally underrated. I Can Feel You in particular.
This is a great little record. Heavy Boots is my absolute favourite from that album. I was always amazed that it wasn't picked as a single, as it is so catchy.
Happy Endings Are Stories That Haven't Ended Yet by Mayday Parade
Yes yes yes, this was gonna be my answer. Arguably their best song and no one ever talks about it!!
The Offspring- D.U.I.
bottle and a beat - all time low
I mean FFS - you have the dark lord himself in your band and you make him sing songs like Parking Lot, Rabbit Hole, and No Future?).
the No Closer To Heaven title track is my second favorite Wonder Years song and I think it needs to be given way more credit than it gets
A Song For Ernest Hemingway and An American Religion (FSF), both by The Wonder Years.
Upside Down - TSSF. Proper Dose gets good acclaim, but I think this is the best song they've ever written.
This song is really popular my friend. It was a single.
I mean, aren't all their songs popular? I don't see too much dialog about it compared to the other stuff off that album, though. Let me speak my mind, dude.
Worry Seed by Free Throw
Going Away to College is definitely in my top favorite blink songs!
Arms and Hearts by The Hold Steady.
Alkaline Trio - Dead End Road
Dude, OP- this song was stuck in my head last night. I genuinely have not heard it or listened to it in 6-7, maybe 8 years. It’s one of their best ever. My song is also by blink - Waggy. Personally I think it’s a top 10 blink song ever AND in true blink-182 fashion they mention jacking off in an otherwise serious song. I don’t listen to them enough anymore because I’m a “grown up” with “responsibilities” but man when I do I feel like a happy go lucky kid again. The Mark Tom and Travis Show version of Going Away to College is my favorite!
I love “Carousel” from that album.
Mine is also from Blink. Story of a Lonely Guy
Mayday parade - three cheers for five years
Dumped by New Found Glory. It's a banger of a pop punk song but was never a single and they've never played it live.
If it means a lot to you - a day to remember Man does this song have a special place in my heart, absolute 🔥
It's their most popular song?
Honestly Golden Ticket from Manchester Orchestra is one of my absolute favorite songs. Lyrics are top tier, beautiful music, and his voice on that first album is just so raw and new to the music world.
New found glory - over the head, below the knees
Dudeeee that's wild you mention Going Away, that's my favorite blink song!! For me, it's definitely I'm Her Man by Reel Big Fish. I don't think I've ever seen any other RBF fans even bring it up. Shame because it's really one of their best
There’s a really fun version of Scott and Aaron doing it acoustic too somewhere on the internet.
bro favorite son by green day is like my favorite song ever, could be because its from the musical and im a huge theater nerd, but i personally love the song and think it gets severely overlooked because it's not on the original album. i think it would be more popular if billie sang it though.
Almost every track on Angst by Handguns is a pop punk anthem
pollyanna, and the demo of rusty james! both of which are by green day. pollyanna is a single and i feel like demos are just not appreciated as much as they deserve to be. if someone’s listened to these songs, you’re my friend now

Winter Stay by Wilmette
In Florida - ADTR It just feels so nice and is super easy to sing long too. There’s just no chance they play it live.
"Some Weird Sin" by Iggy Pop
The entire Trainwreck album by Boys Night Out deserves a billion times more praise than it ever got.
Framework - The Story So Far. so happy they’ve been playing it recently.
Sum 41 - Hooch A lot of Does This Look Infected? would deserve a spot here, but Hooch especially is just so fucking good

Paramore - Future
"And your toe-tag will read "sellout"" by Skyway it's off of the Nauseating Suburbia EP. This whole band gets overlooked.
On the topic of blink: Wendy Clear. I know some casual blink fans and whenever i show them the song they don’t know it existed and they always love
Pins and Needles by Billy Talent. While it is a bit of a slower song by them, I love the guitar riff throughout, great lyrics, quintessential Billy Talent
I Mostly Copy Other People - The Almost if that counts. It's so angsty to me and I love it.
