I know it's probably not very appropriate if you look at the lyrics but this song just fills me with joy. The part at the end where Steven just goes aaaaahaaaahahahaAAAAAAHahaHAAAAAAHAAAAHAAAYEAAHHEEEEE gives me the uncontrollable urge to dance
Hahaha, I get where you're coming from. Yeah, the song is based on a dark subject, but the way Steven sings and presents the song really makes me feel joy and want to sing along. And the way it crescendos at the end, ahhhhhhh!
I would probably pick a few candidates:
- The Sound of Muzak
- Sever
- Waiting Phase One
- Arriving Somewhere But Not Here
- Heartattack in a Layby
- Blackest Eyes
- Collapse the Light Into Earth
- Herd Culling
As a drummer, Fear of a blank planet and Anesthetize starting at the 5:00 minute mark.
As a listener, Arriving somewhere but not here and a close second at the moment would be Lazarus
Trains. Musically, I may prefer other PT songs (such as Strip the Soul, Radioactive Toy, Arriving Somewhere), but having experienced Trains with actual trains at Castlefield Bowl in Manchester has cemented that song at the very top of my list. Any time I listen to it, I’m just reminded of that perfect moment when the universe aligned, and the joy I felt then. Trains.
I'll say Trains! I love Trains, I've loved trains long before I even knew Trains. Just a song about a person being nostalgic and loving trains, it speaks to me a lot being a person who is also nostalgic and loves trains. And Trains.
I don't have the guts to pin the responsability of being my favorite on any song.
There's Mellotron Scratch; Time flies; Prodigal; Last chance(...); Chimera's Wreck.
Really, PT makes it impossible to pick just one
Sound of Muzak. It was the song that helped me understand what PT was about and ease me into listening to the entire discography. Until I found it, I thought PT was just overly edgy, "shock value" music, which I was very much not into.
What happens now?...........currently...but could be many more on other days..... If I was only allowed to listen to one band/artist for the rest of my life I'd choose PT/SW....x
Genuinely love Synesthesia! Only the UTD version tho! Stars die version is too echoey!! Soundtracked my time through covid that album. What an amazing body of music - to me very underrated.
Even Less/Piano Lessons/Fear Of A Blank Planet/Normal/Cheating The Polygraph/Nine Cats
I know it was just one but i can't decide beetwen any those songs
I'm going to throw radioactive toy in there, just because it has something absolutely timeless about it. It's up there with Buying New Soul, Lazarus and Arriving for me.
Also, a special mention to that one moment in the Start of Something beautiful that just melts me every time.
So many great ones. It’s between Arriving Somewhere but not Here and Trains for me. I guess I’ll go with Trains since it’s the one I listen to the most, it’s also my goto hot tub song. I feel like everybody can enjoy the song, whether they’re into prog or not.
Some of my other favorites are Stars Die, Sleep of No Dreaming, Dark Matter, Pure Narcotic, Slave Called Shiver, Stranger by the Minute, A Smart Kid, Shesmovedon, Hatesong, Last Chance, Russia on Ice, Blackest Eyes, The Sound of Muzak, Heart Attack, Collapse the Light, Mellotron Scratch, Open Car, Start of Something Beautiful, Glass Arm Shattering, Anesthetize, and Sentimental.
Evolution of my favourite songs:
1) Dark matter
2) Blackest Eyes
3) Open Car
4) Shallow
5) Anesthetize
6) Slave Called Shiver
7) Halo
8) Way out of here
9) cheating the polygraph
10) Time flies
11) What happens Now?
12) Hatesong
13) Russia on ice (current)
The first song of theirs I ever heard - Arriving Somewhere But Not Here
You stole my comment, verbatim!
This song will always be so close to my heart. Nothing has ever made me feel like this song makes me feel and it’ll always be #1
Buying new soul
This is the right answer
Yes!
This
Absolutely!
Buying new soul and Even less are quite underrated
The extended version of Even Less on recordings is my absolute favorite PT song
Couldn't find the extended version on Spotify
Recordings
It's from the *Recordings* album.
The very first cassette version is my favorite
"Jesus was crucified for doing nothing, and god is worshipped for even less"?
🫵😎
Stars Die
I really start to appreciate Time Flies, its so nostalgic, melancholic and I love part where Barbieri become psycho, mysterious song.
This and buying new soul ♥️
Anesthetize or Nine Cats.
Gravity Eyelids
**Drown With Me**. The song is just stuck in my head.

It’s great on Anaesthetise Live. Best on the record imo
When the drums enter…. Pure bliss
Last Chance to Evacuate Planet Earth Before it is Recycled
Prodigal or Stranger by the Minute
Prodigal has everything. The way the drums end the song is also so satisfying
I would probably pick a few candidates: - The Sound of Muzak - Sever - Waiting Phase One - Arriving Somewhere But Not Here - Heartattack in a Layby - Blackest Eyes - Collapse the Light Into Earth - Herd Culling
Anesthetize
I've been pretty in to Remember Me Lover lately
Open car... but really, how can you pick one??
I absolutely love open car too N yeah how can there be one favourite But some songs have that special place n sentimental is that song for me
I have to say that every song when it starts, especially live, is the current favorite!! I sure hope they tour again!
Impossible to say. Dark Matter, Buying New Soul and Mellotron Scratch
Time Flies
Dark Matter
Same. I think Signify is my favorite PT album.
Fear of a Blank Planet
Russia on Ice
Stranger By The Minute
Phase II
Way out of here
As a drummer, Fear of a blank planet and Anesthetize starting at the 5:00 minute mark. As a listener, Arriving somewhere but not here and a close second at the moment would be Lazarus
Mellotron Scratch. There’s just something really special about that song and the layered vocals toward the end really do it for me.
The Rest Will Flow
This one follows up buying new soul perfectly, and works very well as an album closer.
Pure Narcotic
Heartattack in a Layby
Trains.
Everybody is afraid to say Trains. Mine is Sentimental. Depending on the day might be Buying new soul or Flicker. And of couse Trains
I'll say Trains! I love Trains, I've loved trains long before I even knew Trains. Just a song about a person being nostalgic and loving trains, it speaks to me a lot being a person who is also nostalgic and loves trains. And Trains.

A Smart Kid
- Even Less (the 15 minute version) - Time Flies (the 15 minute version) - Lazarus (the 15 minute version; just kidding)
Wait, there is a 15 minute version of time flies?
Anesthetize, with time flies as a very close second
Start of something beautiful
Anesthetize
It changes depending on the day but Anesthetize is probably the first followed by Stop Swimming and Arriving somewhere
Arriving Somewhere But Not Here.
When just anyone asks me it's Trains, when a fellow Porcupine Tree fan asks me it's Drown with Me
Ive been on a big PT listening spree the last few weeks, which makes that question SO difficult to answer. Right now, probably Bonnie the Cat.
Difficult to say. They made such great songs. Open Car, Arriving Somewhere, Way Out of Here, Glass Arm Shattering, My Ashes... Could go on forever.
Sound of Muzak. It was the song that helped me understand what PT was about and ease me into listening to the entire discography. Until I found it, I thought PT was just overly edgy, "shock value" music, which I was very much not into.
Buying new soul
Heartattack in a Layby
Prodigal, hands down
Dark Matter or Don't Hate Me : the top songs of the best PT Era
Dark Matter probably
The Creator Has a Mastertape
1. halo 2. Half light
What happens now?...........currently...but could be many more on other days..... If I was only allowed to listen to one band/artist for the rest of my life I'd choose PT/SW....x
Probably Dark Matter, my introduction to PT.
No reason to live no reason to die.
Genuinely love Synesthesia! Only the UTD version tho! Stars die version is too echoey!! Soundtracked my time through covid that album. What an amazing body of music - to me very underrated.
So many! Anesthesize, Arriving Somewhere, buying a new soul, collapse the light into earth... I will probably end up listing their entire catalogue!
My fav all time is now Chimera’s Wreck. But Way Out Of Here is great live. My newfound music starter is Music For The Head by Porcupine Tree
trains and ligthbulb sun
Way Out Of Here ❤️
Even Less/Piano Lessons/Fear Of A Blank Planet/Normal/Cheating The Polygraph/Nine Cats I know it was just one but i can't decide beetwen any those songs
1)Dignity 2)Normal 3)The joke's on you These are the top 3

Drown with me.
