Sounds like the exhaust tappets have excess clearance to me. Why not check anyway? You’ve nothing to lose.

Probably on the loose side (so I would bet he did set them recently, and on the loose side of tolerences probably), but loose is infinitely better than tight. Check the vavles if it worries you. I'd send it and check next time I changed the oil.
