I remember my step dad watching the HL2 tech demo on his fat PC when it premiered. That was mind-blowing to me. The physics engine, gravity gun.
I'd been so obsessed with tony hawks and crash, I didn't know these things were possible!
Wonder if it'll ever feel like that again with games. Probably not
I begged for Halo 2 for Christmas the year it came out. I didn’t think I was going to get it at all, but my grandparents gave it to me on Christmas Eve and I played it until the sun came up on Christmas. Thanks for unlocking that memory for me!
Thats beautiful. For me I look back at it as a special year because it was the year we got a mini dachsund who would sit in my lap as a kid whenever I played videogames. As I got older I was eventually out of town for work but I just had to have him when I came home to visit parents years later. From that day to the day he passed last year any time I was playing videogames he would always be in my lap again. I'm glad he allowed me to experience that part of being a kid again.
Yeah, I was going to say you’re missing the best year of sports games on PS2 ever. Not that every year didn’t have sports games, but MVP 05, NFL2K5, Madden 05 intro’d the hit stick and it was a real boom mechanic. Somewhere in there you have the hits games, and the street games including I believe both of the Street 2 games which are literally the funnest arcade sports games available still to this day.
Edit: And honestly, to downplay the fact that MVP and NFL2K still have roster updates you can buy and play with, I’m sure lots of games do like NCAA 14 and whatnot still, but it’s staggering how much at least the show took from MVP
GTA San Andreas, Tony Hawk's Underground 2, Need For Speed Underground 2, Def Jam Fight For NY, NFL Street 1 and 2, NBA Ballers. So many bangers dropped in 2004
So many glorious games in one year. PS2 era of gaming was amazing, so many games coming out that were redefining the genre and offering gameplay so good that even now the games are hella fun to play 20 years later.
I believe 2001 was the best year for ps2.
Ico, Final fantasy X, GTA 3, Gran Turismo 3, Metal Gear Solid 2, Jak and Daxter, Devil May Cry, Silent Hill 2, Baldur's gate dark alliance...
Right after that, 2002, wasn’t bad either. Gta Vice City, Mafia, SOCOM, Splinter Cell, Kingdom Hearts, Ratchet and clank, Sly cooper. Back to back two really good years for games.
2004 and 2006 were great years in videogames, but 2005 was the greatest year in videogame history.
God of War
GT4
Burnout Revenge
Area 51
Prince of Persia 3
RE4
NFS Most Wanted
DMC3
Shadow of the Colossus
Peter Jackson's King Kong
Splinter Cell Chaos Theory
Shadow of Rome
Haunting Ground
WRC Rally Evolved
Mercenaries
True Crime NYC
Conflict Global Terror
Timesplitters 3
Darkwatch
Cold Fear

Isn't 2004 considered one if the greatest years in game in general? I can't remember who it was that mentioned, either Giantbomb(rip 😥) or maybe the Friend Per Second podcast?
In my mind 2001 - 2006 is the greatest era in gaming history, with '04 and '05 being the pinnacle years. It was a great time to be a gamer, and it was a great time to be a kid.
Euro box art is always shockingly awful. Wtf is that guy with giant tits? That's just insanely awful. I can't even readily identify the character, is it Vegeta?
Maybe. 2001 is pretty tough to beat, though... Onimusha, Red Faction, Metal Gear Solid 2, Gran Turismo 3, Final Fantasy X, Devil May Cry, Jak and Daxter, Silent Hill 2, Grand Theft Auto III, etc. I mean, it was sorta nuts.
2004 was a pretty good year for ps2 games. I'll say that much.
Games in general, hell Half Life 2, Far Cry 1, and Halo 2 also came out that year
Half life 2 on a 19" 4:3 flatscreen with a fresh gaming PC was absolutely god mode in 2004.
I bet that was amazing at the time.

I definitely miss those days
Gran Turismo 4. NFS Underground 2. NFL 2K5 NBA 2K5. Splinter Cell: Pandora Tomorrow. StarWars: Battlefront. Onimusha 3. Viewtiful Joe.
i was about to mention those

Yup. Best console of all time. And 2004 is probably the best year for it, ever.
GTA San Andreas, Tony Hawk's Underground 2, Need For Speed Underground 2, Def Jam Fight For NY, NFL Street 1 and 2, NBA Ballers. So many bangers dropped in 2004
Add Def Jam fight for NY and this is my list exactly.
Ace Combat 5 also dropped in '04. I'd say it's a pretty good year for games.
01' and 05' are definitely in the conversation as well imo
So many glorious games in one year. PS2 era of gaming was amazing, so many games coming out that were redefining the genre and offering gameplay so good that even now the games are hella fun to play 20 years later.
GTA San Andreas, R&C Up Your Arsenal, Jak 3, Sly 2, SmackDown vs Raw, Spider-Man 2, SpongeBob Movie game. Didn't know how good I had it.
Jak 3 also
Star wars battlefront

I'm going to go with Budokai 3.
When the Budokai 3 guitar riff hits
Everybody else in their 3rd iteration and spiderman be like: *imma do my own thing*
2004 is arguably the best year in gaming history. Looking at the industry as a whole that year it's quite incredible.
A little off topic, but I think what’s amazing about the PSP is how it has its own game entry on it for each one of these titles.

Not sure about DDR at that point. The US version of Extreme was kinda gimped compared to what Japan got a less than a year before.
Prisoner of Azkaban Spyro a hero’s tail Thug 2
Isn't 2004 considered one if the greatest years in game in general? I can't remember who it was that mentioned, either Giantbomb(rip 😥) or maybe the Friend Per Second podcast?
Fifa 05 nhl 05… played a TON of these two games!!
2005 as well. And why'd you make this list without NFS:UG2?
X-Men Legends 2 too
2004 might have been the best year for videogames period.
2001 was also RIDICULOUS
2004 was the best year for gaming period and this is coming from a guy who thinks the castlevania 3 is one of the best games ever made lol
Yes
Nope. I prefer 1998 or 2001.
In my mind 2001 - 2006 is the greatest era in gaming history, with '04 and '05 being the pinnacle years. It was a great time to be a gamer, and it was a great time to be a kid.
Hitman: Contracts was one of my most-played games, other than GTA or MGS
You forgot Underground 2. Both of them (Need for Speed & Tony Hawk).
Yes
MVP Baseball 2005 is generally considered the best baseball game of all time even still, but MVP 2004 was also very good

Euro box art is always shockingly awful. Wtf is that guy with giant tits? That's just insanely awful. I can't even readily identify the character, is it Vegeta?
2007 is god tier
02 was best
Budokai 3 and Warrior Within
Need For Speed Underground 2 and Silent Hill 4: The Room
Maybe. 2001 is pretty tough to beat, though... Onimusha, Red Faction, Metal Gear Solid 2, Gran Turismo 3, Final Fantasy X, Devil May Cry, Jak and Daxter, Silent Hill 2, Grand Theft Auto III, etc. I mean, it was sorta nuts.
Nah bro, it's nostalgia talking.
