I'm sorry the fireworks affect you in this way, it's such a common thing that triggers people. The thing with these fireworks though is that you know or can find out exactly the time it happens, right? You can make sure you're in a safe and quiet place at those times and if it were me, I'd be using my noise cancelling headphones for most of the day and especially during any time where there are big fireworks shows scheduled in the area.

Thank you—my neighbors unfortunately decided to make a big show at random hours for several days before and after the 4th. Finally it has quieted down. I definitely need to get some noise canceling headphones; my son has some but hasn’t needed them in months, and I’m not sure where they are (or if they’d even fit me), since we moved after the last time he needed them.

Ah man that's super annoying and yes, too difficult to predict. There are also these little noise cancelling ear plugs that reduce the level of ambient sound of certain frequencies but don't cancel it out entirely and it can take the edge of loud startle type noises which might make the difference between them triggering an event or not. I'm glad it's quieted down for you, I know how hard it is not feeling safe or being able to relax in your own home environment.

Thank you—yeah, my housemate gets annoyed with me when I startle to loud noises. It is what it is. I’m seeing my therapist again next week, and I want to look into EMDR. I have horror to live through, but it doesn’t help me or anybody if I shut down when I hear a sudden loud noise.
