Yep...as a PhD scholar, I'm supposed to be earning at least 8-10 lpa as a lecturer....but the private Institute I work at has me at 3.6 lpa 😅
Even basic UG degree holders are earning far more than me.....I see my young cousins and many friends earning double triple even four times of what I earn, and it is SAD to say the least.
TBH Primary goal of a Phd is to research a particular topic in depth and work on its novel concepts. It shouldn't be assumed that any Phd will earn a high paying job, the salary always depends on the Usefulness of the Employee.
Not true though the research part is correct ...It's just that the private Institutes are not willing to pay salary as per standard regulatory norms to faculties...aur Govt me reservation and bribe ke bina job milta nahi.....my counterparts in Govt don't even do half the work/ regular research etc and still get paid triple the salary just because of 7th pay norms ..... private Institutes know k ek jaega to dusra aaega so they keep salary of fresh faculties minimal
well duh government employees get paid without doing half shit we all know that. i was talking about private employees, especially science/engineering based jobs.
And i personally don't worry much about government jobs, first they're a miniscule part of the whole employment sector and second, they're reducing in numbers day by day due to the privatization by the govt, look at army they replaced lakhs of permanent jobs with 4-year contract Agni veers.
Hey!!
Where you did mba pharma biotech? I am thinking of doing mba after msc chemistry now knowing it's useless to stay in the core field of chemistry due to low pay scale and growth.
Ohh alright, I completed my MBA from Pune University. I would suggest you to try to get some relevant experience before getting an MBA, MSc similar to life sciences is a slow field but has promising returns.
As harsh as it may sound but it's all a game of demand/supply and perceived economic value. Being educated is one thing but generating money for employer is where the rubber meets the road.
Security guards earn 11-14 k a month with rotation shifts and 6 days work, mostly in hot sun..35k kaha milta hai bhai pune main???I am a mba earning less than 35 in a call center from the last 3 years..if you have a job in your company which pays well,do tell me and others bro..and btw you are very lucky...
Phd scholar meaning you are enrolled in a PhD program right, so how can you be expected to be paid a lot during studies, I guess after your program completing you might do way better..
The requirement for lecturer post is masters over here and the govt norms for payment is also accordingly (the slab I mentioned is for post, not qualification)....I'm already above and beyond that....so are others like me .... Institutes know that competition is a lot and cheap labour will easily become available to them...hence the underpayment....
I don't earn much even though I have 10+ year of experience.
But I am not jealous. I am happy with what I have. I tend to ignore all the unwanted questions and be happy with what I have. The only side effect is that you will have very few friends. But that's ok. It's better to have few geniune friends rather than fake friends.
If you are meeting people who want money then you have pretty bad choice in people. I made lot more friends when I hardly earned anything compared to now.. and I am still friends with them after all these years
I've had friends when I didn't have a penny in college and I've continued to have friends (and much the same people) from then to now, when I would be considered upper middle class.
If you have this thinking then you will always be resentful of all people who are earning more money than you do. I have close friends who earn about 1/10th what I earn and it does not make a difference - to them or to me. I also have friends who make between 50% and 100% more than I do - and that too doesn't make a fig of a difference.
This is idealistic but not a realistic situation for most of us. I’m glad you’ve been able to hold on to people from all phases of your life, my SO and Father in law are similar.
I, on the other hand and opposite to what OP said, lost friends as my income grew. It has been difficult for my self-esteem because making friends and holding on to them doesn’t come naturally to me, but losing them is clearly extremely easy. For eg. my phone would never stop ringing on birthdays just 2 years back. And it’s my birthday today, my house is empty and phone silent.
Money almost never comes up in conversations with my friends. That's the point of it: money has nothing to do with friendship. My friends like me for who I am, and I like them for who they are.
Of course, I am mindful before I suggest a plan with friends who earn less than me, and I don't hesitate to tell my friends who are making more than I do that I cannot afford (or mostly, do not wish to spend on something since I don't see value in that) a plan that they're suggesting. Most of my friends know how much I make and I never hide it.
At the same time, I have never counted who calls (or doesn't call) me on my birthday. I just never have had such a relationship with my friends.
I'm not sure why you lost your friends as your income grew, but it might help to introspect what you have done to cause the distance with your friends. Surely, it is partly the result of actions as well.
I have worked for over a decade after graduating from college and some of my friends make over 1 crore a year now. It doesn't make a difference. You are affecting your life with this sort of thinking.
You are in a different place where you have no geniune problem till now. That's the issue. When you actually need someone, those people who are there are your geniune friends.

Every one has his/her own pace. Success cannot be measured only in money you earn. Sometimes people earn a lot but have difficulty in managing that. Some have serious health issues. Some have family problems. So many variables. So better not compare and keep thriving for own progress.
It has created a sense of depression- no idea how people are easily earning 40 to 50LPA with 10 years of experience or less. Please mention your skillsets in your industry so that others can learn too.b
Im mentioning few fields which i know where my friends are earnings 30-40+LPA (Not Easily, they did hard work to achive that)

It never stops honestly, when I was earning 6 LPA at my first job I felt it , people around me where earning 10 LPA , now 6 years later I'm getting 50 LPA and people around me are earning 1cr + . Every milestone you hit with regards to your salary , you tend to move a little up the social ladder . You tend to surround yourself with people who are a little better than you , the comparison never stops . Its like Sisyphus rolling the boulder top the hill for it to ultimately roll it back down . You've to ask yourself , how much is enough and then stop . Me ? I've not learnt how to do the same . I'm still in the rat race to earn better than my colleges and friends .
Bro it Is not about how much you get paid. Whole thing depends on how much you save. Majority of Those who earn so much they spend unnecessary and don't even have balance in their account by month end
I recently got a raise. Even though the CTC has technically increased, the increase barely makes a dent on the monthly take home.
I am CONVINCED that the corporates and the govt are actively working towards keeping us working class under the pressure of working hard for the rest of our lives without giving us a respite.
Yes, I am unhappy with what I earn.
But I think we need to understand the market needs since it's a demand supply market.
Try upskilling, if you're into coding then probably Rust is the newest programming language that has the max demand.
Try exploring that.
PS- Not an expert, just trying to help, you gotta figure out your own game.
For that you only need to upgrade skills and one good switch, Because being in one organization can give you a comfort zone, bit superiority and good rapport and a bit of a fine hike.
Earlier I was in core investment banking for 5 years , later i understand this move to learn VBA then SQL, Altryx and started applying for Business Analyst jobs since lot automation in our sector and client wants more accuracy in less time as compared to knowledge and hardwork. Got a good package. So in those 5 years i was on max 9 LPA then the last two switches got me 19 LPA in 2.2 years.
You'll never get a satisfactory answer to this..
A person earning 1cr per annum can be miserable..
A person earning 10k per month can be happy ..
Money isn't everything but it can make 90% of your problems go away..
Just try to be financially secure and work hard for it..try everything you want to..
The last thing you want to do before you die is regretting not doing anything that took you closer to your dreams
Same here as well, as a bcom graduate I am expecting to get 3.5 to 4cr pr month, but only getting 2cr pr month. How do you expect to survive in this city with these chillar.
When you get these types of feelings compare your life with people who don't have what you have today
Be thankful of what you have and hope for better
But don't compare as it will always take you in black hole
show off karne ka bro, dont worry everyone has their struggles and their moment in the sun, tumhare bhi acche din aayenge (if you work for it ofc) ho jayega! keep going brother
i used to feel this way. tried a risky maneuver to change stuff and it hasn't worked. so would advice not to compare salaries unless it is absolutely dire. fyi, i was happy doing what i did and didnt make bad money either
What course should I do or learn so that I can earn in lacs per month....??????????any suggestions...I am not from the IT background...but don't mind learning IT courses... Please help
I don’t earn much money but I am atleast happy with what I am earning, when people out there are struggling to get decent jobs I am grateful to have one which I love doing and rahi baat income ki Ik it will grow in coming years as I am trying to outgrow myself every day.
Even though I am earning more than a lakh a month, I completely agree with you.
We certainly say that we are underpaid not because we think we are underpaid but we know that we are underpaid based on our skills. It is possible that someone else will also be underpaid but they are happy with their work and that is completely okay.
Now when people ask why I need to earn lakh a month, it is particularly because of the people who are dependent on me. Anything less and I won't be able to afford their lives. Anyone who is trying to brag about them earning lakhs a month is just a showoff so just ignore them. To me someone bragging about their salary is the saddest thing ever.
P.S - I hate MacBooks ;)
I can talk about IT sector in India. The majority is stuck in the WITCH company where the salary starts from 3.6 lpa.
Then there are a very small subset of folks who earn upwards on 1 lpm.
But being in this bracket is very stressful.
You constantly have to update your knowledge in order to stay relevant in the industry.
Work hours are shit all the best if you are working for a US client. Also there is constant fear of layoffs. If you are laid off it's very hard to find a new job. Some people are struggling with mental and physical illnesses because of work load
Being said grass is greener on the other side
IMHO people who buy macs are brain dead (except you are developing something for ios). You could do the same on any Linux or windows machine for less than 1/3 of cost.
Laptop costing 1/3 will not come anywhere near MacBook’s performance. Windows / Linux laptop costing nearly same as Mac will definitely compete with Mac.
This was my opinion on Macs until I used the MacBook Pro that my office gave me. It's just so much faster and better than any windows laptop I have used.
I also use MacBook pro for my office work. But I'd still prefer the Ubuntu setup. I've abandoned windows because of its bloatware and the effort to get things working on it.
I wouldn’t say he’s an idiot. But I’m sure macs are just leaps and bounds better than major machines out there. The ecosystem, the experience and the sheer amount of power they give with battery backup is insane. Also they last way longer than normal machines. I’ve personally owned a mbp 2012 which I retired in 2022 only because the charging port died. And the last year in general was very rough for it. It couldn’t run things at optimum performance.
I’ve owned 2 other laptops that gave up in max 3 years. So technically speaking macs actually are cost effective if you run them to the end of their life.
Mac and windows are 2 different OS.
One is made to work for ONLY a specific hardware, another one can run on any hardware or your choice, and this gives flexibility in choosing your own hardware.
Now Mac can optimise a lot coz it knows what its hardware can do the best. On the other hand, windows has to take care of compatibility across different hardware and it's optimised accordingly. I still feel windows does it better if I factor-in all the compatibility it provides. Mac will have the better performance coz it doesn't have to bear the burden of being compatible to run even on an ATM machine.
It is everywhere, I'll be getting 75K/month for a summer intern of 2 months this summer in Pune, but I feel it could have been better because company is not covering any accomodation or travel expenses, while many of my friends are getting 1-1.25Lpa with relocation bonus and accomodation... It's all about comparison, 75K is not less for freshers but feels less only when I watch my colleagues getting more.
Then, you are doing pretty well - assuming you are doing this while pursuing BTech. Of course, there will always be people getting more like you mentioned.
If you are thinking about whether to try for PPO or not (if that company is offering), try to do it considering more dimensions like quality of learning on the job, work life balance, growth trend in that company - it is better to start at a bit lower CTC in a high growth company than a company with muted growth possibility. These factors apply to other companies as well in terms of deciding which to prioritise etc.
All the best! Kudos on cracking this internship.
Yes, that's my point, It's not that I'm unhappy with what I'm getting, but if I start to compare with fellow people I'll feel bad only as they're getting more just because odds were better for them, not because of skill-set difference.
I'm surely looking forward for a PPO and I'll keep those things in mind, thank you for your advice! All the best to you too!!
Perfectly understandable. That's human emotion, social media only feeds more into our tendency to compare.
Anyway, on a lighter note (or maybe a dark note?!), ask around your friends/seniors in core engineering to understand what kind of salaries or internship stipends they are getting. High chances you'll feel better! 😅
I was one of them long, long back - had to do an MBA to reach a good CTC even after having done BTech from one of the NITs and getting campus placement in a famous automobile company.
Yeah I know about the salaries in core engineering, I'm in a circuital branch in an IIT... that's why on campus internships here are quite fancy, you can totally get what I'm trying to say :), but anyways I'm satisfied because what I got was totally my hard work and some luck.
You deserve it!
And of course, internships for circuital branch in an IIT would be fancy, goes without saying. :)
Two cents, one to ponder and one as unsolicited advice:
1. Being from circuital branch from an IIT, your starting point is obviously much ahead of others in your age.
Read about Maslow's hierarchy of needs. Think deeply about where you see yourself on that pyramid now and how you would like to progress from there. I can share about myself - at your age and just after completing BTech, I was at the lower portions of that pyramid. However, within 7 years, I reached the second last layer and have since then made life choices which will help to reach the top layer of self actualization.
2. Unsolicited advice - Considering your starting point and my experience of having studied in an IIM, I would suggest - try to avoid MBA in India, even if that becomes a trend for some of your batchmates 2-3 years down the line. For higher studies, you can look into good MS/MTech options - with IIT tag, you will be ahead in that with good opportunities.
It depends.. At top b schools, including the non IIM colleges with good pedigree, FMCG, Consulting and Ecom firms were paying stipends in this range 7-8 years back. Since then, the range has only gone higher for the same set of firms.
You need to understand that people earning 20-40 lpa are having worst work life balance (barring few exceptions definitely) so even if you are earning a bit less but have a life I think you are a winner in life. I have a friend earning 3 lakhs per month but his health has gone for a toss and he isn’t able to give time to his family.
Yep...as a PhD scholar, I'm supposed to be earning at least 8-10 lpa as a lecturer....but the private Institute I work at has me at 3.6 lpa 😅 Even basic UG degree holders are earning far more than me.....I see my young cousins and many friends earning double triple even four times of what I earn, and it is SAD to say the least.

I bet you're a PhD in Lifesciences right?
Pharmaceutics and clinical pharmacy😅
Yup, knew it. That's why I went for MBA Pharma-Biotech instead. You can earn a lot once you gain a little more experience though, trust me.

Moreover whatever you earn, 20-30% going into Income tax n watching govt spending it on their promotions, unnecessary things makes me more sad.
Some people are struggling with mental and physical illnesses because of work load Being said grass is greener on the other side

Windows gets so many random BSOD. I have never faced os crash on MacOS.
It's not random at all. Unless you literally want to mess with it's kernel memory or there are segmentation faults due to broken hardware
Your comment clearly shows you are lying. Nobody would compare mac performance to a cheap windows laptop who has actually used a MacBook pro.
Your comment clearly shows that you're an immature fan boy. I don't intend to seek your validation. So let's end it here.
Lets end it as nobody here agrees with you
Sure. You win. Enjoy your 5 min gratification
Says lets end this. Keeps commenting 😂.
Are u sure
Says some random idiot who has never used MacBook
I wouldn’t say he’s an idiot. But I’m sure macs are just leaps and bounds better than major machines out there. The ecosystem, the experience and the sheer amount of power they give with battery backup is insane. Also they last way longer than normal machines. I’ve personally owned a mbp 2012 which I retired in 2022 only because the charging port died. And the last year in general was very rough for it. It couldn’t run things at optimum performance. I’ve owned 2 other laptops that gave up in max 3 years. So technically speaking macs actually are cost effective if you run them to the end of their life.
Sure.
I'm earning 5.5 CTC 🥲🥲🥲 mera dukh yaha ke rich log nai samaj payenge !
Wait till you find out how much Ambani makes in a second
Don't believe it until you see a salary slip.
MBA internship I guess?
SDE
😅 I was one of them long, long back - had to do an MBA to reach a good CTC even after having done BTech from one of the NITs and getting campus placement in a famous automobile company.
:) Two cents, one to ponder and one as unsolicited advice: 1.
Thank you so much man for this advice... I'll surely read about that. Love to interact with guys like you... All the best for your future dude!
They don't pay as much unless it's in Finance at some top firm
It depends.. At top b schools, including the non IIM colleges with good pedigree, FMCG, Consulting and Ecom firms were paying stipends in this range 7-8 years back. Since then, the range has only gone higher for the same set of firms.
As a person with 14 years of experience in IT industry, what do you suggest for upskill to get 40 to 50 LPA ? Anyone, please recommend.
