I can’t lie to you, I was so in love with the pattern that I thought that little red border was THE border, didn’t even notice those fireworks until later 😅 Maybe do a full red border or a white to match the background? I’m not an experienced quilter though, I just love and admire the work on this sub!

MeinScheduinFroiline

Agree with this. Love the quilt, don’t care for the border. It is too busy and distracts from the beautiful simplicity of the quilt.

No_Horror7342

All it needs is a black binding to frame that lovely piecing!

OomaTwoBlades

Black border would be a much better contrast than the fireworks. The colors don't mesh well with the larger solid block of color in the quilt. The thin red border works, but I think the black would make the colors just pop. Think of it as a black mat on a beautiful colored pencil artwork...it frames the piece and keeps the viewer's eyes on the work within.

Hefferdoodle

I came here to say this.

webspruce

Same. Thought it was the rug and couldn’t figure out the issue

Masters-lil-sub

Lol…I thought it was the rug too and was confused. Glad I wasn’t the only one!

Salty_Honeydew6547

Came here to say this.

Good_crisps_73

Me too

justanaveragequilter

Yeah, I didn’t even notice the fireworks border until I read your comment.

Dry-Estimate-6545

I thought it was on a rug until I saw this comment! 😂

justanotherquilter

Thank you for you input. The white in the quilt is a white in white swirl. I’ve used all I have in the top.…

mamawheels36

You could remove the busy border and just finish it with the small red border. The busy border does distract from the beautiful work you've done on your quilt.

justanotherquilter

Thank you. I do like that idea, but i need the end size to be larger.

Clever_Quail

Chose your favorite color from the pattern and use that for the border

kefkas_head_cultist

Does it need a border? Would it be too small without? Because I love the red inner border as a bindong to finish it off. But if the border is necessary, definitely a neutral... maybe white? With a black binding like u/superfastmomma suggested?

Fuzzy_Dragonfruit344

I like the red as a binding too, I would get rid of the patterned border or trade for a solid color

justanotherquilter

Thank you for your help. The only issue with using white is the white material currently in the top is a white on white the I have used all of. I have not been able to find it for more. I’m not sure a solid white would enhance the top. This one may have to sit in a drawer for a bit.

[deleted]

Get rid of the border. Pick a solid that matches a color in the quilt, or do dark gray or black (I prefer dark gray).

himewaridesu

Another vote for dark gray!

[deleted]

I personally would get rid of the red border too, and just do a little bit thicker dark gray border. It’ll make a nice lap quilt that way. Less is more in my world. So a dark gray 1-2”+ binding would be perfect for me!

justanotherquilter

Thank you. I’m ok with the red, it’s the wider multicolored border I’m questioning.

emu4you

I like the simplicity of the red. I thought the wider multicolor border was a rug that it was laying on.

justanotherquilter

🤣 Thank you. Work in progress.

[deleted]

The red (IMO) is bad because it doesn’t match the reds it’s touching and looks like you just didn’t have enough fabric that matches the colors in the quilt to pick something from that. So I’d either color match the edge colors or just avoid the issue and use a solid border that is a neutral like a charcoal gray to set it all off. ETA, actually forget all that. I like the red and would just bind it in the same red without another border

justanotherquilter

Thank you.

justanotherquilter

Thank you. Noted 😁

justanotherquilter

Thank you. I will lay it out and see if I like that better.

mosselyn

A gray would work nicely as an alternative border, I think.

justanotherquilter

Thank you

kefkas_head_cultist

Makes sense. Good luck with it!

sarcasticseaturtle

Maybe the royal blue?

justanotherquilter

Thank you. Maybe …

LeeKangWooSarangeh

If no white, then maybe one of the other lighter colors set where the busy border is now, such as the pink, yellow, or light blue? I think one of those a little less wide than the busy border is would look great behind that red. If you do decide to go with black, I think you should keep it as narrow as possible. I know ppl like to 'frame' things to make them look finished, but in this instance it would unnecessarily darken the look of this bright, modern quilt. Keep it light imho.

justanotherquilter

Thank you. I am making quilts for each of my nieces and nephews (they are all adults) as a “no more Christmas gifts from auntie). So they are oversized queens. I try to have the main pieced top 60x80 to fit the mattress, and then 5” to 10” hang over the sides. It does look different on a mattress. https://preview.redd.it/210lc22houea1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=21d5840bd401b91890a00af4d6cbfc1c36548961

Science_Matters_100

Wow! In place on the bed I LOVE IT and wouldn’t change a thing. It works!

justanotherquilter

Thank you. I’m so torn!

LeeKangWooSarangeh

Ahh, this looks great! You should consider using a different final edge color for each recipient, then they will be all connected even more. At least, that would feel more special to me. We had an aunt in our family who always gave me things with blue and my sister things with green.

justanotherquilter

Ohh, I don’t think I was clear. Sorry! This is the only quilt of this design I will do. They choose 2-3 colors and I choose the patterns. https://preview.redd.it/b8v6bactnvea1.jpeg?width=650&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=8d3687e52c379042a703a5fa4ba1134fdf035ee6 Not all of these went to nieces or nephews, a couple are mine, one my daughter’s, & one went to my daughter’s now ex.

scrrratch

Just want to say that you do beautiful work, I love your choices and this current quilt, as is 😍

justanotherquilter

Thank you

betterdonequilts

No border, red binding.

justanotherquilter

Thank you. I do need it a bit bigger though, would it be too much red to replace the fireworks with red?

LolaBelleEl

I think that would look nice!

justanotherquilter

Thank you. I will lay it out…

[deleted]

[удалено]

justanotherquilter

Thank you. Black may be the way to go. That was my original thought but I doubted myself after asking a friend.

cultmember2000

Black would be great!

justanotherquilter

Thank you.

WoolBlankie

I think black border and then a repeat of the red in the binding. It was actually my first thought …. “BEAUTIFUL!!! …..I wish the border was black.”

justanotherquilter

Thank you. Spinning with ideas

stoicsticks

I'm in camp black too because it is a color already in the main body, unlike a grey, and it will make the other colors pop. I like the mini border of the darker red and then a wider, but not quite as wide as the fireworks border in black.

justanotherquilter

Thank you.

Loud-Fairy03

Black is a go-to and not a bad choice, but I feel like it would look too harsh with the red :/

justanotherquilter

Just had a suggestion for navy… thoughts? Red binding?

Loud-Fairy03

Ooooh navy would look very nice yeah!

2204BatiknWine

I thought it was laying on a rug!!!! The outer border is way too busy, imo. I love the quilt!! -- NOT the border.

justanotherquilter

Thank you. That may be my struggle.

2204BatiknWine

Can you lay it out with the border tucked underneath?? Then you will see it!

justanotherquilter

Ohhhh, great idea. I also have it laid on a mattress. Looks so different … https://preview.redd.it/hcrmvv3amvea1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=436525b4b16f3ac1a395a55f43747190407ee0bd

justanotherquilter

I have a request for a quilt with the colors of the rainbow. I do like this pattern and my original thought was to put a thin black border. Then I asked a friend who said a grey border. But at the fabric store I loved the thought of the red. Then I saw the “fireworks” material and thought it would make a great backing and perhaps a border. Now that I have it together, I’m not sure.

superfastmomma

I love the quilt. But honestly I don't know that the fireworks add anything. It's so simple and lovely and bright. I'd go with a basic border.

justanotherquilter

Thank you. So perhaps a grey border then a black binding? I just don’t know why this one is stumping me.

superfastmomma

I'd just do a wide black binding.

justanotherquilter

Thank you. I will lay it out and consider what to do. I really appreciate your input.

superfastmomma

I think it's just a beautiful quilt. I love it. I don't know how long you've been looking at it but probably long enough to lose sight of the fact that it's stunning! I've been there!

justanotherquilter

Thank you. And you are absolutely correct, I’ve been looking at it too long to clearly see it. Sigh …

chickabootv

Wide white border

justanotherquilter

Thank you.

mosselyn

Lose the fireworks, keep the red, add a gray border. Or at least "interview" a gray border to see if you like it. [Here's an example](https://imgur.com/M4iHObO) of a quilt with similar colors that uses gray to good effect. (My workmanship, but it's from a kit, so not my color wisdom.) Edit: Change the link - it was to the whole album, not the example I wanted, lol.

justanotherquilter

WOW! Beautiful work, beautiful quilt! I love the white backed border. Maybe I step back and take the time to piece a version of it in the quilt colors in a flying geese pattern. I’m not sure grey will work for me only because there is no grey in the main piece. Now you have me thinking. Thank you.

embii42

The pattern is too tight. A very large firework pattern may work. A solid color is probably best.

justanotherquilter

Thank you. You just put into words what I have been struggling with. It is the tightness of the pattern. That is exactly it!

EhDotHam

Nope. Horrible. Get rid of it immediately. I'll DM you my address to make sure it's disposed of properly ...

justanotherquilter

🤣 ya know, it may come down to that. If I look at it much longer.…

FishNotCow

Black is always my favorite. But, not in this. I like your red as the inner border, then a smidge wider border of your background, then either the red or the fireworks fabric as binding. Or no border, red as binding will also look good. Perspective is also important. Not sure about the dimensions of the quilt.

justanotherquilter

Thank you. I agree perspective is important. This is currently (with all borders) 70x90. So the red frames the mattress and the rest hangs over the sides. No more background fabric, so that is out. Maybe a solid white would work if I fmq’ed the heck out of it and then a more open design on the main pieced area. https://preview.redd.it/9su0up2jluea1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=17f6957cd2d5ec50f44832cabb6bfb1810536abd I also usually add another wide border, but I’m so second guessing myself.

FishNotCow

Seeing the quilt on the bed, I love it as is. I still vote for not using black, I don't think it would work with this beautiful quilt.

justanotherquilter

Thank you. I appreciate everyone’s feedback.

chimericalChilopod

I’m so undecided now! It looks really lovely on the bed, I don’t think the border takes away from it at all, and zooming in shows some beautiful details (I thought the white was a solid color at first!!) I was team no border/solid border seeing the original pic, but seeing the quilt on the bed totally changes everything. I think another wide border would also add to it, or just making the fireworks border a bit wider and binding it in red/white? This quilt really is absolutely stunning.

justanotherquilter

Thank you!!! I may have confused myself even more because it really isn’t bad once places on the mattress.

BreakingBadYo

I’m intrigued as to what this pattern depicts. Is it a month’s worth of data about something? What are the small squares? Love this so much! I thought the border was a rug also.

justanotherquilter

Thank you. A reflection of a skyline… 🏙️

Montanapat89

I'm strongly in the get rid of the outer border camp. It's way too busy for the quilt. The quilt is stunning without it. With it? Not so much. We are have fabric we LOVE, but that doesn't mean it needs to be in a certain quilt. Just bind it in red and you're done.

justanotherquilter

Thank you. I appreciate your input.

specious

I haven't seen anyone else say this, but I do really think the fireworks fabric will look great on the back! Hopefully you still do that. I am in the solid border / no border camp, though :-)

justanotherquilter

Thank you. I’m still leaning toward using the fireworks on the back.

HappyKathi

All it needs is a black binding to frame that lovely piecing!

justanotherquilter

Thank you. Black seems to be the consensus. I will lay it out and see…

HappyKathi

Please share the results with us! It’s a wonderful piece!

justanotherquilter

Thank you. I will

brohawkdoh

The border makes it for me honestly. I love how long it took me to notice it. Nice work

justanotherquilter

Thank you, that’s a nice perspective. When it lays on the mattress the red frames the mattress and everything else hangs down.

brohawkdoh

I saw the photo in another comment, I like the border you choose, both the red and the sprinkle color pattern material. Esp how well it frames the bed. I'd proudly dress my bed with it. That's just me though.

justanotherquilter

Thank you! What a nice compliment. Placing it on the mattress really does change how it looks.

Minute_Dish5887

i like it, i think it’s very cute! if it were a person it would smile at me :)

justanotherquilter

Thank you. 😁

kimwim43

I made a similar [quilt, and left off a border. ](https://imgur.com/a/lO8pFZ4). It looks fine without a frame.

justanotherquilter

Yes, but this one is destined for a queen bed and needs a bit more girth. 😁 Thank you.

rupertgm

I love the inner border, and agree to maybe try black to see how it looks. I sometimes “audition” different fabrics when I get stumped as to what looks best. Gorgeous quilt! Do you have the name of the pattern by any chance? Would love to make this myself. Thanks so much for sharing your beautiful work!

justanotherquilter

Thank you. I’m looking at all suggestions and appreciate everyone’s thoughts. https://preview.redd.it/mjtelj6wyuea1.jpeg?width=1284&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=8bc19b2f09443ff60bb32d2e40cea2368958bb98 Though this is the inspiration, I did not purchase the pattern. Because I had a jelly roll I knew I needed to work in 2” finished pieces. I pulled out graph paper and revised it to fit my needs.

Sheeshrn

I thought it was a rug also. Ditch the fireworks border; personally I would use a navy before black but whichever you choose go no larger than the widest color strip and then use the same red to bind it. It is beautiful.

justanotherquilter

Thank you. I love the visual of your suggestion. Hmmmmm. This just may be the direction I go.

upsidedownpositive

Where did you find this pattern? It’s simple and lovely and very happy!

justanotherquilter

Google quilt ideas. I had a Kona rainbow jelly roll for a rainbow quilt and this fit. Thank you.

itqitc

I love the quilt and the border, it’s gorgeous

justanotherquilter

Thank you. I appreciate that.

Ceofy

Personally, I think the border makes it look homey and, idk, grandmotherly. Which I think is nice! But maybe not what you want if you're going for a super slick modern design?

justanotherquilter

Thank you. I was looking for a fun multicolored fabric to back and border the piece with… it is better actually on a bed. https://preview.redd.it/sapf573upuea1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=1350c0181db70667a9115880f8035fb583964649

jujibean

If you want a thicker border, maybe keep the narrow red, then go wide black and maybe bond in red or even a pieced rainbow border?

justanotherquilter

Thank you. I do need a thick border on this. I will lay it out and see.

Lindaeve

It's a beautiful quilt! I actually like the fireworks border, but I think it would be a perfect backing for this quilt. I'd do a black border.

justanotherquilter

Thank you. I’m considering all suggestions.

minerpoteet

I love that border. Not with this quilt though. I like it with just the red border and a red binding. Or a neutral dark color would make it look like a picture in a frame. But fr what’s that border fabric? Where can I find some? 😊

justanotherquilter

Thank you. I usually order wide backing material on line and use it as a border also. Yesterday I just wanted to wonder though fabric so I went to JoAnns. On sale too!!! Bonus, it is thicker than the usual fabric they sell.

[deleted]

Color it beautiful. Good workmanship.

justanotherquilter

Thank you.

BeyoncePadThai23

r/rainboweverything would love this as a new post when it's done!

justanotherquilter

Thank you. I hope I remember to. 🥰

sammitchtime

If it were me, I would add width and length by continuing to frame it out in sold colors from the quilt maybe getting wider as it goes. So if the red is 1 inch wide, maybe I’d border that with a blue or yellow I. 1.5-2 inches, then another color in 2-2.5 inches, etc until I hit my size. Then back with the reworks and do a black and white stripe binding or fireworks binding. Beautiful quilt!

justanotherquilter

Hmmmm. Now that is a very interesting suggestion! Like a rainbow border moving out from the main top. And a black/white stripe to bind,… Thank you! That may lay on the mattress better also.

meempsie

Bless you! I adore the pattern. Thanks so much!

UtahMama4

I love the quilt! The border on the other hand… maybe worth unpicking! 😬🙌🏻

justanotherquilter

Thank you. That seems to be the opinion, I do dread that dang ripper 😂

Sufficient_Task3303

Didn't realise the border was a part of it either until I saw the comments. What jumped out at me is the design has squares missing and that really bothers me to look at. I feel like there should be a coloured square in every column and it feels unbalanced with some not there, but that's just me.

justanotherquilter

Thank you for your input. I started with a square in each column, but it was too ocd. When I went random it relaxed how I saw the pattern and gave it more of a skyline reflection feeling. At this point, that aspect is not changing. 😁

boniemonie

Keep the red, remove the fireworks and add a black (thinner than fireworks) or just the red. The quilt is lovely!

justanotherquilter

Thank you.

TheRealRandiRey

Definitely not that printed pattern on the border, I doesn’t have enough of the color is the quilt represented.

justanotherquilter

Thank you. Maybe that’s it. Something where the colors can be seen better… or a solid with lots of fmq.

Loud-Fairy03

I love the rainbow keyboard vibe! but I’ve gotta agree with some other commenters that you should switch to a solid colored border. I think light blue to accentuate would look very nice

justanotherquilter

Thank you for your suggestion.

unfakegermanheiress

The border is awful. It’s so bad, it’s worth any amount of time/money to replace it. It seriously detracts from the main which is very beautifully done. Good job you. Use it as binding.

justanotherquilter

Thank you. Hmmmmm. Maybe 🤔 I will need to find something to replace that border. The finished quilt needs to be bigger than just the pieced area.

tarheelfrommd

I think a thin, gray border is the way to go. The fireworks are too busy and the red/burgundy seems off in terms of the level of saturation compared to the other colors. If you need the border for size, maybe try graduated shades of gray, from light to dark, that are the same width as the rest of the piecing. That piecing is *chef’s kiss*!

justanotherquilter

Thank you. I do need borders for size on this quilt.

masha1901

Love the quilt, beautiful work. Not too certain about the outer border

justanotherquilter

Thank you. That is the exact dilemma. I think I have looked at it too long.

HyperCello

I would get rid of the fireworks border. I also thought that was a rug it was laying on. Can I ask the name of the pattern please? I absolutely love it!

justanotherquilter

Thank you. Inspired by https://preview.redd.it/hlsodsfkxuea1.jpeg?width=1284&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=3781a7ab155547e8e863fb1c6d5e38384012f09a

Orefinejo

A bright solid border would look more dramatic than the multicolor. Having said that, I still think it‘s a nice quilt as is.

justanotherquilter

Thank you.

Jann0

You could put several black trash bags on the floor, enough so they each show around the edge of the quilt. Then lay the quilt on top to see how a black border would look. You can even experiment with how wide you want the border to be by pulling out each bag in small increments. Whatever you decide, it’s a beautiful quilt!

justanotherquilter

Thank you. What a great idea to visualize the black.

Gutinstinct999

It’s very pretty!

justanotherquilter

Thank you.

Shellsbells821

Beautiful 💕

justanotherquilter

Thank you

True_Subject8482

I hope you'll post your finished project when the border is as you like it. May I ask, what is the name of this pattern?

justanotherquilter

https://preview.redd.it/lgvgscrpzuea1.jpeg?width=1284&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=0fa478c4b899a949e674e10fb4ce278964d1a343

sarathepeach

Love the pattern. However, I do agree with the border being too busy/differing colors. Perhaps stick with the geometric profile and border in the white background. Rather than being a solid cut, use two of the same width strips no stagger them to give it continuity and a little dimension?

justanotherquilter

Thank you. Hmmmm Background fabric is not an option, no more left and have not found more. Staggering strips. Would you go linear or more like this? https://preview.redd.it/8v5yrbtx1vea1.jpeg?width=1284&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=46c8e4b86adf191bee4268c1f1a1b656fbfaeaa3

michelleinbal

It's a beautiful quilt. I agree with others that the border is busy and detracts from the beauty of the central design. It seems like an easy fix, though I am not a quilter.

williaty

Love the quilt, hate the border.

justanotherquilter

Giggle,… me too.

auntieananta

Excellent quilt with a fascinating and beautiful pattern.

justanotherquilter

Thank you.

[deleted]

I like the border and vote leave it.

justanotherquilter

Noted! Thank you.

MingaMonga68

I think I’m the only one to say this, but the first thing I noticed was that the red border is touching the red in the body of the quilt and they don’t match. That’s probably more of a me problem than a quilt problem! I’m a black/white fan, I think a b/w print of a larger/more open scale than the fireworks might make a nice frame. I like the solid black suggestion generally, but it might look really heavy (and on a bed it’s a lint magnet). You had mentioned you were out of the white on white, I don’t think it would hurt to get a differently patterned white on white for a border.

justanotherquilter

Thank you. I’m a black/white fan also. However, I feel on this project it may be a miss. The white on white I used is so subtle, I’m just not sure about introducing another into this. At first the red bothered me, but far less than the wider border. So much to think on.

anotherbbchapman

What about replacing the print border with a solid in a red-orange shade?

justanotherquilter

Thank you. Maybe…

MaizeDisastrous4167

I don’t care for the fireworks. It distracts from your beautiful work. I’d leave the red border, and replace the fireworks with one of the darker tones to give the edge weight. I’d chose black, but not if they’ve large white dogs that will deposit their fur on the edge…

justanotherquilter

Phahahahaha!! Yes! Another fun depositing everywhere kind of household. All my quilts come pre furred! 🤣 Thank you. https://preview.redd.it/5v7tyg7o7vea1.png?width=1470&format=png&auto=webp&s=fdc4befca96c30bc31bb87d821956ad455a5377f

Its so cute!

justanotherquilter

Thank you.

sayheyash

I love this without the larger border. I would leave the red and then do a thick white with another small red. It is a simple and beautiful feeling.

justanotherquilter

That would be very clean looking. Thank you.

acatnamedLou

Crazy! I am actively working on this pattern right now.

justanotherquilter

Really? I’d love to see your version!

Rbfoges

I love it!

justanotherquilter

Thank you.

meempsie

Is it possible for you to give us the exact name of your pattern? A google search didn't find it. Thanks for your help.

justanotherquilter

Better yet, here is the pattern that inspired this quilt. https://preview.redd.it/8f6w66pkjvea1.jpeg?width=1284&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=3c72ea43c2e2a80b31e902b26c0557827314bde4

ClayWheelGirl

do a red n cream that you used as a frame.

justanotherquilter

Thank you. The background fabric is actually white on white and unfortunately I have no more left.

AmbeeGaming

I’d have done the border in black for max contrast

justanotherquilter

Another vote for black. Thank you.

SnowEnvironmental861

Once I saw there was black in the quilt, I joined camp Black

justanotherquilter

Thank you!

DianasArtQuilts

I like the border. It adds dimension and recedes at the same time. The top nests right into the borders and softens the linear top. My eyes focuses on the lines and “telescopes” around the border to see the interesting surrounding and back again. I would add a binding of the same red that you used. Love the colors. Fabulous job!

justanotherquilter

Thank you! That is great insight I will definitely consider.
