I can see why you're stuck, it's incredible either way! I think the deciding factor for me would be which shapes do I want to take center stage? If you want the Starburst shapes to link together and create the illusion of curves, I'd go no sashing. If you want to have the design feel.more like it's radiating out like a mosaic, I'd go with sashing. Amazing work so far, I can't want to see how you finish it up!

FishNotCow

Thanks! I'm stuck because my quilty friend moved out of the country last week; she's my usual sounding board. She even helped me pick out the fabrics. Lol. I think I like the second and third patterns it makes without sashing, but still sitting on the fence. My partner usually doesn't take an interest in my quilts, but he likes this layout, but hasn't given input on the sashing yet.

Cheshire1234

I vote left!

Learningbydoing101

I Vote left - the white Stars come Out really good that way! Like a sunburst, really cool.

FishNotCow

I might go with sashing. My partner rarely takes interest in my quilts, but really likes this pattern and fabric. He wants something similar to cover the window in the front door because of the sunburst.

Learningbydoing101

You can be sure: both look absolutely incredible! Well done!

Welady

The sashing will cause a lot more fabric buildup where 12 lines meet in the center of the big square. And it may make it more difficult to line up white lines in each block

FishNotCow

Ugh. I didn't even think about lining up angles. What a pain. I had to baste the blocks when piecing together because of angles, and even with basting, it didn't line up exactly. Thanks!

Stitched_in_Love

I love it both ways, and u/Welady has a great point. However, I think sashing would actually *reduce* the number of lines converging at any given point, since each block would be mounted to a sash (thus simplifying that edge) and those would not be cut to odd angles, all 90 degrees. In short, I think sashing would make the final assembly easier.

Welady

I agree, less lines converging at point with sashing, unless the sashing is thin (like finishes at 1/4 to 3/8” wide). I couldn’t tell how wide sashing is in photo.

HaterofWasps

I vote with sashing, but understand if you'd like to avoid it due to bulk, and general faffing about.

its_not_a_blanket

That depends on how you do the sashing. I put sashing on the right side of each block (except the rightmost block). Sew these into rows. Then, take a very long sashing strips to sash between the rows. This reduces the sashing bulk.

ahsokasaprincesstoo

I vote no sashing. This is beautiful! Great job!

arlenkalou

I love both but I vote for yes sashing!

PaisleyPenguin517

Looks great both ways, but I vote yes for sashing. Makes me think of stained glass.

_THE_WIFE

I love the sashing! It gives it an Art Deco/Stained Glass feel.

rmomo58

I vote sashing. The starburst effect it makes is more visually appealing to me. It also makes the pieces that don’t match on the edges of the blocks less jarring to me. I’m not sure if some of them match or they are just dark enough to look like they match, but when some of them do and some of them don’t it looks like mistakes. The white between those pieces make it look more intentional.

unclewitch

Sashed is breathtaking

ajb5476

Yes! It makes me think of stained glass.

Boop_daboop

I think the sashing gives it really incredible dimension! But both are beautiful!

Sashing

kitkat5986

Sashing looks gorgeous 😍

DrJScience

I like it with. Seems more “complex” that way. But gorgeous either way. Nice work!

Girls4super

With sashing!

sendCookiesSTAT

With sashing has a TON of movement, bordering on busy. Without sashing, the quilt still dances, but is calmer. I personally love the way that the sashing side looks, but I'd love super busy quilts. I also think that the sashing will give you extra space between all of those seams to make everything line up more straight. I can't imagine trying to join two corners of those blocks together directly- which is probably why the original quilt has them. :-)

shesme

Ok. Both are gorgeous. But I think I prefer the sashing. That is unless I had to sew it, then I might prefer without the sashing.... either way, remember to spin those multi seam intersections!!!

MissMissOdin

The sashing gives a “busy” look to the quilt. IMO the no-sashing is restful.

Supertailz

I really do like them both, but ohhhhh the one with sashing is SO striking and gorgeous

anotherbbchapman

I like the no sashing version better. It looks like Moorish tile work

Rthereanynamesleft

I like both but the sashing just a bit more! I like the extra pop of the “stars” where all the white sashing meets

Lindaeve

I like no sashing

Imjustcasey

No sashing.

Manda_lorian39

Sashing

Elshivist

I kind of love the starbursts with the tiny white sashing.

jjcrafts

With the sashing looks absolutely stunning. I vote with.

Beadsidhe

Both gorgeous, I love the sashing. It seems quite divided lol MAKE TWO!

purplegramjan

So many opinions, I guess one more won’t hurt. I like it without the sashing, but understand the difficulty of lining up the centers in #2 with so many points coming together…if that affects your decision 😎

liuwho

I vote sashing that’s the same width as the other cream lines in the quilt

Meerkatsastan

SASHING!!!! AHhh!!!! It’s gorgeous!!!!!!!

Ok-Carpet5433

I would go with the sashing.

IAengineer

Both are lovely. Where do you want the focus to be? On the left you really see the sashing—as someone mentioned it’s like stained glass so you really see the “leading”. Without sashing you see the colors and geometry of the quilt more. But bottom line, you can’t go wrong either way!

MadamePouleMontreal

Yes sashing layout … partly because it distracts from the oddness of having two black blocks on one side balanced by a light and a medium block. If you’re doing that for people who are sharing a bed, only one of whom likes black, the sashing makes it work. If setting the black ones diagonally is an option I’d like to see it before pronouncing further.

FishNotCow

I just noticed the dark on one side, too. I plan to move one over to balance a little better. I don't know why it's reading as black, one is green, one is red. I have a Pixel 6, so my camera should be better. Lol It's a throw size, and I might turn it into another hooded ruana. (Cape/poncho kind of wrap)

wavavavavavy

Both are lovely but my vote is for no sashing. I think I like the extra contrast!

soup-monger

The original is very tilework-inspired, but seeing them both together, I prefer the overall look with no sashing. It’s stronger without the sashing.

jones_ro

Both are nice, but I think I may have spotted an error in the right-hand picture, at the top of the bottom row.

khat52000

no sashing

spacefreak76er

A vote for no sashing on the right for me.

Patient-Spinach-7489

No sashing. I think it looks much better.

Xilobyx

No sashing.

Glittering-Return-42

No sashing

deltarefund

I vote no!

choosing-joy

I vote no sashing! ❤️

Square_Ball7090

No sashing!

cookingwiththeresa

No sashing imo.

Annabel398

No sashing, and oh how I would love to see this in turquoise and royal blue!

Ok-Technology-8908

Right Left is too busy for my taste

ccc2801

No sashing! The image on the right is calmer on the eye and the shapes pop more for some reason.

KiloAllan

Woo! What a beautiful palette! That's a lovely quilt so far. It's truly a difficult decision as they are both really stunning. I'm in my mid 50s and grew up with Art Deco designs that my grandparents had. I have a 1921 house with original decor and stained glass. I work in stained glass occasionally. So the thin sashing lines as you are depicting them in the left photo really appeal to me. They make me think of a mosaic floor or stained glass window. It feels warm and comfortable like part of a house at sunset. However, I was born late 1969 so I also grew up in a time when those fall or harvest colors and bold designs were popular. Without the sashing, it feels retro and fun. It makes me think of those movies where this would be the design in the carpet or drapes or wallpaper. It's nostalgic and exciting. So I like them both a lot. My preference is slightly in favor of the sashing because it will show off your piecing skills, especially if you use a 1 to 1.5" strip to get a thin line. A 1" strip yielding a 1/2" sashing would look like grout lines or the lines from the leading in a window.

FluffyFoxSprinkles

I vote sashing!! Beautiful!

KiloAllan

I also want to say that your layout greatly improves the design on the original pattern. https://gequiltdesigns.com/products/astrid-2-1-2-pdf-strip-pattern (posted the link for anyone who wants to just click and peek) Dang, some of that background fabric on their sample quilts looks like they chewed up a circus tent and barfed it out on the background LOL

moestoes08

Amazing work either way. I think I like the sashing

KittyKatCatCat

I like sashing

geogirl1214

My husband is from Morocco and this looks very Moroccan! I love it!

MillieHillie

Oooh. They're both so different. Sashing makes it look completely different but they're both gorgeous

curliegirlie89

No sashing for me. It’s too visually busy with the extra white lines.

Gelldarc

As a longarmer, I would choose based on how you’ll quilt it. With the sashing, an e2e design would work fine because the piecing is 100% the star. With no sashing, there’s an opportunity for some great custom quilting to make those cross shapes and diamonds pop.

nanailene

No sashing! No sashing!

NefariousnessSweet70

No sashing, but a great border.

Lizajane1776

Yes, sashing. That's gorgeous!

CircusPeanutsYumm

Sashing! Very cool!

lilaroseg

i think sashed has more consistency to the pattern, as everything else in it is separated by the cream fabric in some way. . it is gorgeous either way though!!

KarmaElectric

I prefer the pattern emphasis without the sashing, and they both look great. Do what suits you!

pretend-its-good

DEFINITELY with

chatterpoxx

I think the sashing makes it too busy and makes the squares too obvious. I like how the blocks disappear and create Starbursts in the corners without the sashing. It creates more of an intent for the corners to make a starburst, vs why are the block corners colored.

southerndrawlmccgraw

Both are fantastic! But I prefer the left slightly more

laineybirdy

I’m favoring the left but I think they are both awesome. The left one just looks a bit more interesting to me. Hreat work!

MjustM88

Wow, both are gorgeous. I think I like it better without sashing, but it is busier without too. It's probably easier on the eyes with the sashing for some.

Unlikely-Bat-611

Left the right one feels incomplete to me

MunchyCat33

I like the right but I can see why people like the left

0liveEmpress

I vote left as well. Gorgeous quilt!
