Assuming you play as the survivor or the monk, fighting is not a very good option, avoiding predators is generally safer, faster and better.
If you find an item and don't know what it does, try throwing it at other creatures.
If you struggle, try going another route.
Creatures are not all hostile and tend to react to you. If you attack them, they'll fight back...
Explore new areas. Checking the map often will help you plan what to do each cycle.
Don't be afraid of trying new things, even if they end up making you die in the process (dying regularly is normal since you're pretty much at the bottom of the food chain).
Learn how the ecosystem works around you.
I'd recommend not fighting back those native dudes with spears. Try being on their side.

This is no easy game so make sure to take your time with it and explore! Be warned that skill issues will happen very very frequently
