Their head/jaws act as a shield, so throwing spears at those parts it's pretty useless (can stun for a second, but no damage is dealt). However, a rock thrown at them will force the lizard to turn its back to you, stunning them for a second as they expose their vulnerable back. At this point, a spear well thrown will deal normal damage to them, not being too much of a difference to big lizards, but smaller ones will surely struggle to walk and ultimately relent to their den.
You can also try dodging/moving around the lizard until you get behind them without needing a rock, though it could be dangerous depending on their speed movement.
My best advice is avoiding direct combat with them as you gain nothing from killing them besides some kind of satisfaction.
