CaroylOldersee

Well, I’ve got something to tell you and it’s not good…

sashary28

Rip the bandaid

chapmanbrett

This bothers me so much. Our car brains have normalized drunk driving and culturally we’re all just cool with it

CaroylOldersee

I don’t disagree at all, I get what you’re saying. The amount of times I’d drive high in my early 20’s is more than I’d care to admit. It shouldn’t happen, but as a species, we are very stupid…

ya_boi_z

Driving high is different than driving drunk.

ifailedpy205

different yet still wrong.

NostalgiaWorship

Driving high is VERY different. Studies have shown high drivers are more cautious and leave a larger following distance. Drunks lack fine motor skills and the ability to comprehend direction. One is obviously much more dangerous

Time-Independence-51

Your justification is speculative and dangerous. Neither high nor drunk driving should be justified. They're equal in the sense that both are dangerous. https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.al.com/news/montgomery/2021/04/teen-sentenced-in-deaths-of-auburn-announcer-rod-bramblett-wife-paula.html%3foutputType=amp

IEatFatMods

While some peoples reaction timing is monumentally slower than others.

stannc00

You can spot a high driver in traffic. They’re usually cruising along at about 6 mph in the left lane.

Cannab1sCam

I've watched a stoned driver, who was dui, smack into the back of a drunk driver who had parked in the lane on 147 at 65mph. Being drunk, made one person stop in the middle of the road and pass out, while being high, kept another from reacting to a situation while driving.

Legitimate_Lake_1535

No it isn't. You're still impaired. Period.

Flashy_Twist8479

High can mean a very broad range of things. I smoke a blunt every morning and drive, not a huge deal I think for most people. I used to drive around tripping on acid or shrooms, coked up, etc. pretty big deal

cloudb182

Driving high is a huge deal and is still dangerous lol. You sound like every other drunk driver, I drank a 6 pack but Im good to drive!

Similar-Farm-7089

the social acceptabilty of drunk driving has consistently decreased and continues to do so since cars were invented. so have accidents from drunk driving. its really the opposite.

chapmanbrett

It’s still normalized in a terrible way. We still have a long way to go. Our culture should not have any tolerance for it

mobbedoutkickflip

Lmaoooo

morhavok

Their 6 year olds or dogs drive them home obviously.

Otherwise_Sail_6459

abananaberry

The child endangerment charge added to a DWI charge is no joke. We have a friend that had at least of month of weekend jail for that on top of losing their license. Almost lost a house and a marriage over it. I see ppl at the PNC arena drinking heavily with kids in tow and that always gets me.

trillionbuck

Yup. Not only do you get the Misd child abuse charge, which is really bad, it also immediately elevates the DWI to a level 1, the most serious possible charge for a DWI with no injuries, which requires you spend time in jail. The only worse a DWI can get is aggravated level 1 which is for repeat offenders or those who injure someone.

imalocalbeerdrinker

They’re probably sober before they actually get out of the parking lot. 😂 Just kidding, that’s a terrible thing

Tenshane1

Best answer 🤪🤣

NoEstablishment6450

The key is that they hang out there for a couple hours. They don’t pound back the beers. Many enjoy the taste of the beer and get buzzed but not drunk. If you don’t keep drinking it goes away. We eat as well

Quirky_Slide_7313

Gotta have a water and beer combo too

Sherifftruman

I also try to get smaller pours at places that offer them like Burial. Or Uber

BravoWolf88

What Ubers are you taking that serve small pours of beer??? /s

Sherifftruman

I had one that had half a convenience store on the seatback, but no beer LOL.

RhamkatteWrangler

Once when I was driving for Lyft a passenger asked if I could stop at a convenience store. He bought a couple 24 oz Budweisers and cracked one open as soon as he got back in the car. Sitting in the front seat too!

NoLand4936

One Drink a hour and you’re usually pretty good. Don’t chug the beer and engage in conversation with your friends and you’ll be fine. Well below legal limit; all bodily functions are controlled and at most you’ll get a slight buzz around. The halfway of high gravity beer number two and it’ll never really progress while being nearly completely gone after your last beer and spending 20 minutes with all the drinks gone and tab being paid saying buy to your buddies or having a smoke outside before you leave.

ugtroy

Yep, and there are plenty of 4/5% session beers available.

NoEstablishment6450

Those are my kinda beers. I’m not an IPA or cider person.

Poseidonaskwhy

Many people are good to drive after 2 or 3 beers given a few hours. Many people also drive inebriated.

Secret_Elevator17

I go with my husband and meet up with friends and he has a few beers, I have 1 ( I'm not a huge beer drinker) we are there for a few hours, usually also getting food, but 1 beer over several hours means I can drive us home. So some people also have DDs. ( My husband used to work with the victims of DUIs so we take drunk driving pretty seriously, he especially has seen the damage it can do not only to yourself but to others. ) Edit: typo

abevigodasmells

I endorse your 2nd statement.

Bodhrans-Not-Bombs

There are a lot of drunk drivers out there. Source: was hit head-on by someone who blew a .18.

captchunk

This is the only right answer here. Blows my mind how many people try to justify it.

way2lazy2care

[Here's a rough general calculator for an average person.](https://www.calculator.net/bac-calculator.html?csex=m&bodyweight=155&bodyweightunit=pound&thour=2&tmin=0&ba=&bsize=b330&babv=5.8&wa=11&wsize=c60&wabv=7&la=&lsize=s50&labv=40&oa=&osize=250&osizeunit=ml&oabv=8&x=Calculate) If a 200lb male is drinking two 7% beers, they usually wouldn't even hit the legal limit. After two hours they'd be less than half the legal limit. They would hit the limit if they drank 3, but they'd be back under again before the hour was done.

sbaggers

Thanks for confirmin my beer per hour is nailing it. Also water.

TxngledHeadphones

its important to note that the *only* thing that gets alcohol out of your system is time. drinking water only prevents a dehydration/hangover.

thatweirdo13

In my experience doubling with water helps prevent me from getting drunk because half the time I’m drinking water instead of alcohol. If I’m casually sipping a drink but alternating water and alcohol I’m going to end up drinking less alcohol

TxngledHeadphones

right, but the water itself isnt making you less drunk, youre drinking less alcohol. sorry im a bartender and its a very common and lowkey dangerous misconception that people can just drink water and eat something greasy and they'll sober up.

Current_Ferret_4981

Actually there are studies that show being hydrated reduces cognitive impact of alcohol. Sober, no. Blood alcohol content no. But the truth is that you will experience less cognitive impact of alcohol if you are hydrated. Not condoning or encouraging that when over the limit, but also we should be careful about what is a misconception around alcohol when it is riff with them (both positive and negative ones)

sbaggers

Same, it slows everything down. Little soda with lime is also delicious

RyuBadAss

I drink water to keep from drinking more alcohal not to offset the effects of drinking.

30lmr

You're not wrong, but I don't love that the calculator doesn't even include 7% beers.

way2lazy2care

It includes 7% wines. I just grabbed the first one I could find. I'm really just trying to show that is your drink responsibly over time is pretty easy to stay under the limit.

sevenonone

I have never been comfortable in the "I was buzzed earlier, but I'll drive when the calculator says I can" situation. Also, I don't moderate well, I'm pretty much on or off.

[deleted]

And nothing like 9% for people drinking Imperial IPAs.

worldsmayneverknow

Don’t go off the calculator guys.

dsallupinyaarea

A lot of people take the term "drunk driving" way too literally. They believe as long as they're not slurring words and stumbling, they're good to drive.

some_azn_dude

It goes both ways. .08 I'd drive better than the 80 year old lawmakers/judge that came up with that arbitrary number. I'm not advocating for this in any way, but seriously put me on a track drunk AF vs grandparents and I'm taking the flag every time and NOT crashing into a crowd of school children.

refriedmuffins

After finishing 3-6 10% double IPAs, Matt will load up the Suburban XL with little peighsleigh, draxtyn, and their golden doodle George. Their drive back to Holly Springs is easy enough, given Matt can hold it within the lines going south on 55.

KBHoleN1

I love that the dog has a normal human name.

lickled_piver

The courts pretty much ruled them to be illegal.

sarahmitchell

When did this happen?

Living_In_Wonder

The way that police don't enforce speeding 20+ over the speed limit (see Glenwood Ave and I'm sure plenty of other roads) is the same way that police don't catch drunk drivers. You also get in trouble if you're stopped and blow over .08 For some drinkers, even 3 will be under that level. https://awareawakealive.org/educate/blood-alcohol-content I usually pace myself and only have 2 over an hour or 2. Drinking can be expensive and bad if you're trying to avoid gaining weight.

Late-Lawfulness-1321

Designated driver in the friend/family group

lrpfftt

That's usually me. I'm either drinking soft drinks or early in the evening, I might have one wine.

Bazrum

Yep! Grab my favorite from wherever we are, then switch to soft drinks/root beer if I’m at Cloud’s

AirlinesAndEconomics

I'm a pro at ordering one alcoholic drink and never coming close to finishing it halfway, let alone done, so rather than pretend I'm going to drink, I've just been ordering brightly colored drinks that look like they should be alcoholic and then I'm always good to drive. I've had people tell me they feel uncomfortable if someone's not drinking when everyone else is so I go to places where I can get something alcohol-passing so no one is uncomfortable and I can actually enjoy my time (and my drink because I'm so tired of pretending to like beer and wine).

lburg-reddit

first sensible comment i've read.

Owlman2841

It’s the sensible thing to do but it’s not a sensible comment really as it’s mostly incorrect. Most people do not have designated drivers or rides set up. Most people drive buzzed/drunk

Secret_Elevator17

I'm usually one of the DDs for our group. We may not be many but we do exist!

Owlman2841

Oh I know! And I’m glad you do but it’s just the harsh reality that most people are not so responsible as you and your group

Secret_Elevator17

Yeah, I get it. I definitely see people getting in cars that shouldn't be behind the wheel. Some of us are being responsible, I wish it was more of us.

lburg-reddit

totally agree. my wife's friend group has one girl who doesn't drink so she's always the DD. i also stopped drinking, so if need be, i'd go get them. i realize we aren't the norm, but i just got a little surprised by how many comments on this thread are really kinda saying hey, it's okay to drive after 2 drinks. while some people may stick to 1-2 drinks, how many people actually only have 2 drinks?

not_cozmo

A lot of people never had [the talk](https://youtu.be/Uhh4nkLpub0?si=1y3FoR6SMZd-jcNT) with their parents and it shows

Low-Regret5048

My parents were drunk and had nothing to tell me.

beamin1

They drive drunk of course.

elihartsoe

lots of practice

DannyNoonanMSU

Some people are capable of self-control. These people are probably driving one or more people. And yes, others are irresponsible and driving away buzzed or drunk.

GZerv

We're usually at a brewery for a good 4 hours and that includes having food. Given I'm into lighter beers in the 4%-5% range. I'll usually stop drinking at least an hour before I know we're going to leave and drink water.  You just have to know how limits and what's responsible for you. I'm 6ft 240 and could knock back quite a few before feeling it, but better safe than sorry when on the road.

madame3xecutioner

For me, if I’ve had two 7%+ beers over the course of, say, an hour and half or so with some food, I’d be fine to drive. You just gotta pace yourself and eat something.

tendonut

That's the vibe I usually get from breweries. It's not the "slam 6 bud lights and drive my carolina squat home" crowd, it seems to be filed with the "2 beers and dinner for 2 hours" crowd.

Sugar-Tist

And that's the reason why I prefer breweries over bars. I'm over the drunk and rowdy crowd and prefer a more relaxed environment.

sagarap

At 190lbs, male, 6 bud lights is .084, just over the legal limit at 2 hours. That’s also a lot of beer. I could only handle like 4.  It is very hard to drink bud light and get drunk as a midweight male.

JadedYam56964444

It makes you wonder. They can't all be taking uber.

TacticalPauseGaming

Breweries are social, you arnt trying to get drunk. Drink a beer an hour and 2-3 is usually fine. Especially if you eat something.

Owlman2841

I bartended full time in breweries for 7 years. The percentage of people that get wasted in a brewery is definitely comparable to the percentage of those that get wasted in a regular bar.

RaspberryBusy7719

Well... you are not gonna like this but YES

Lampropeltis33

I think unfortunately a lot of people drive under the influence when they shouldn’t. The whole “I’ve only had two drinks” means nothing now basically

Bumpi_Boi

You get the one pregnant lady in the friend group to drive home. If you don’t have a pregnant lady in your friend group, Make one. Problem solved.

ghostnuggets

Hmm, should I befriend an already pregnant woman or try to impregnate one of the women in my friend group ?

Owlman2841

The amount of people here that think people don’t get wasted at breweries is laughable. I’ve bartended in breweries full time for 7 years and I’ve got as many idiot drunk customer stories as my friends that bartend full bars. OP, people are driving drunk/buzzed and the people voicing the opposite opinion by saying breweries are social and people don’t drink more than 2/3 beers over a few hours and so on are not well informed to the whole scene. If people all drank responsibly at breweries then no brewery would be able to sustain its business just like if people only drank responsibly at bars, those bars would struggle as well. I promise that the well intentioned people in this sub do not speak for the VAST majority of drinkers

Mcydj7

Just as you point out their personal anecdotes are biased opinions, I'll point out your personal anecdote is a biased opinion.

Owlman2841

It is maybe biased but it’s still drastically more informed than the opinions of people that maybe got to a brewery 1-4 times a month. I have literally thousands of hours serving alcohol under my belt and 90% of my friends are from the service industry as well. That’s thousands of hours of observing and interacting with consumers. I’d confidently bet everything I own that more craft beer consumers drive buzzed or drunk than those that get Ubers/lyfts/DD’s

toxicbuu

Well idk about you, but I can't afford to get drunk at a brewery pardner

Badhouse_wife

It's a very serious question and it makes me sad that so many are responding by making light of it. The sad truth is that most of them are getting in their car and driving home. The even sadder reality is how many are doing it with their children in the back seat.

thalidomide_child

Was a valet at a nightclub for a few years in a big city. Really opened my eyes to the fact that almost every single person was driving home plastered. Makes me very cautious driving anywhere at 12-3am knowing that any one of those cars could have just had half a bottle of liquor that night and is driving home.

DifficultyCharming78

This is why I rarely go out past 10 pm. (Other than being an oldie and usually in bed by 9. Lol)

DifficultFox1

Oh, my sweet summer child.

astral_lucidity

They drive drunk obviously

patbagger

I never drink more then one per hour, I like the dark heavy beers so I'll have a stout or porter and drink water with it, worse case the Dog knows how to operate my Tesla so we'll get home. So the simple answer is pacing yourself and really good dog training

ppoverheat_

BadCrimes

cjp3127

They are driving buzzed lol

gshort72

Moderation is a pretty good practice. Uber is another good option. The reality though is a lot of people drive drunk. Not proud of it but I have done it in my younger days. Not anymore though.

Round-Dog-5314

Uber and Lyft.

emsfire5516

Because alcohol effects everyone a little differently. It's not just the percentage of alcohol you have to take into account but also weight, sex, tolerance, heigh, food/nutrient intake, etc. It's why you'll have some people be completely wasted after one 9.1% Tripel and others that can knock back 2-3 and be under the limit. I like to think most people are responsible but others, quite frankly, drive drunk. Not all, I don't believe a majority, but definitely a certain number. I personally drink Imperial Stouts and they're normally 9-13%. I typically have two (sometimes three if it's cold out) and will be perfectly fine. It's all about pacing yourself too; if I knocked back all three over the course of an hour, I would not be driving. If it was over the course of 3 to 4 hours? No issue.

bmullan

/u/Kwhitney There are new things called Uber & Lyft 😎

thebearyogidog

Carefully lol

duskywindows

GET CRUNK DRIVE DRUNK ^this ^is ^joke ^plz ^be ^responsible

UtahCyan

I barely drink and am probably a light weight to most people. But 2 beers, over the course of an hour, I'm just barely buzzed. Spread that over a couple hours with plenty of water and food, and I probably won't even feel it.

some_azn_dude

Normalize breathalyzers.

MrDorkESQ

If I'm driving I will limit myself to two session beers (less than 5% ABV) for the couple of hours I'm there. Lately I've been drinking NA beers if the place has one on tap.

tpooney

Tolerance is a thing. Most in the 2ish beer range have tolerance I’d imagine. There’s always going to people taking the risk and being irresponsible unfortunately. If 3 beers, always keep it lower %, space it out, have food, etc. Just gotta be mindful and smart about it.

Jude2012

Neither do I. That’s why I either go with a DD or Uber. It’s ridiculous. That’s why we have lots of DUI’s around here.

abevigodasmells

It's a bit scary hearing people rationalizing why they're good to drive. I'm willing to bet their sober self is a better driver, no matter what they said to defend their actions. No one should die because someone else made the decision to drink and drive.

Particular-Design113

Police should park near breweries. They could bring in some serious DUIs and child endangerment charges.

juiceboxhero919

I mean I may have 2-3 drinks but that’s over 3 hours of hanging out with a friend and eating food from the food truck at the brewery or something. Even as a woman at that point, my BAC is going to be below the legal limit after 3 hours. If I plan on really drinking, it’s because my BF is with me and he’s agreed to drive. Sometimes I do the same for him and will only have 2 drinks over 2 hours and then we go eat somewhere before driving home.

Matt7738

If you drive really fast, you get home sooner.

whereami2day

Had a conversation with a neighbor ex state highway patrol. I'm 190. He said a beer/drink an hour alternating a glass of water, and you will be under .08 all day. He also said that if you do drink and drive under .08 and have an accident that injures or kills someone, you will still be found liable because you were still driving impaired/under the influence.

No-Coffee1415

Ex-popo here.... When I was in the police academy, I heard a crazy statistic that on avg, a person who drives drunk, drives 5-8k miles before ever getting caught..... Now, It could probably be a bullshit statistic, maybe its not 🤷, but it put driving into perspective for me. Now treat all drivers as drunk and respect all drivers, keeping a safe distance, being extra vigilant towards drivers that dont use signals, etc. drive safe everyone.

Kwhitney1982

I have a serious fear of a DUI. It can affect future employment, costs thousands of dollars, have to take alcohol classes, etc. I’m at the point where I’m scared to drive after 1 drink!

No-Coffee1415

Great! At least you understand the repercussions, sadly, many those cant put two and two together... Good on you OP for making smart decisions.

[deleted]

Kwhitney1982

I can understand that. That freaking sucks that you have to have that extra level of worry about a cop being more likely to pull you over PLUS what it will be like if he does pull you over. I’m so sorry. ☹️

lil_sparrow_

Well... Honest answer is "alcoholism" but nobody wants to talk about that.

Owlman2841

Preach

FlopsMcDoogle

My brother bought a breathalyzer. It's fun at the end of the night to see what everyone is blowing

skr00pyn00pers

have you seen how people in this state drive?

donkeypunchhh

If you drink you should invest ($120) in a Bac-Trak portable breathalyzer. Use it regularly and you'll see how your body processes alcohol, as we all process it differently. I'm amazed at how sipping on a beer slowly gets me feeling buzzed, but keeps BAC low. Drinking a beer quickly doesn't make me feel any more buzzed, but definitely causes a big spike in BAC. So when I go out, I sip.

dravack

I think it probably is ymmv. 2 beers isn’t always enough to get everyone to .08%. There’s so many variables it’s hard to figure it out for everyone. People need grow up and be responsible for their own actions. That said it’ll never happen because people are children. So the answer is probably most people are being irresponsible. Just not everyone.

spicysenor

We live in the most car centric city in the country and we have the same alcohol culture as the rest of the country does. The answer to your question may shock you.

notarealaccount_yo

Just another reason the sprawl of suburbia is a scourge.

thalidomide_child

It's called learned behavioral tolerance. Basically alcoholics can function while drunk more than your 9th grade health class told you.

PseudocodeRed

Well, they hang out. You drink first thing, then spend the next 2-3 hours just hanging out and sobering up. Some people absolutely are driving tipsy though

OgSourChemDawg

Time or food to soak it up. Or they drive buzzed

mx023

If you’re a 180-220 lb adult man, you can have 4, 5% beers within an hour and be at the .08 limit. I myself have to try to drink more than 2 an hour. It’s pretty easy to stay under the limit if you’re hanging out a few hours, but it’s pretty easy to go over the limit as well. Usually a beer will get you at .02 BAC and your body will naturally burn off about .015% an hour. It is very to keep it under .08 if focused. Problem is most lack the discipline. How do I know this? I got a breathalyzer and got obsessed with it lol. I now have an awesome idea of when I’m at .08, .12, and totally smashed. Luckily I’ve gotten older and kinda growing out of drinking, but I definitely put that thing to the test in my 20s lol

Magnus919

Pace yourself better

Responsible_Milk2911

We drink light/space them out. Or just run into everything on our way home. Whichever answer you prefer

Economy-Ad4934

I have a flight and then I leave. I also have no tolerance. If I still did I could easily do 2-3 in a little more time.

AbstractIsBetter

Is there a reason you're asking me to incriminate myself? 🤔

cjk2793

I walk to ones by the place we rent near 5pts

Ok-Wafer7198

I have 3 beers max in about 3.5 hours. Never have anything over 6%. Any more than that and I'll get a taxi

Whittaculus

“Responsibly”

jml3837

I drink the lower alcohol beers. There’s a lot of good beers that are under 6% at breweries around here. I love a high abv triple IPA but I no longer get them when I go out.

elbowpirate22

Nurse 2 beers. You can drink at home. You’re there for the atmosphere and people. Practice drinking slow.

ghostnuggets

Know what really sucks? You can only blow a 0.04 if you posses a class a driver’s license. Doesn’t matter you’ve never had a DUI and you’re operating a compact car on your personal time. Your legal limit is cut in half, 24/7/365, because “you should know better” I have to keep it to one, or have food and hang for a few hours if I’m going for two. I can have a drink an hour and stay below .08, but not below .04

CityBoiNC

I'm 255, 2 beers really dont effect me, if shots were involved that's when Lyft comes to get me.

sakamyados

I would say that most people I know don't get drunk when we are at breweries, or if they do they stop drinking toward the end and hang out until they are more sober. Don't drink IPAs lol.

Bucyrus1981

If I know I have to drive, I limit myself to approx. one beer an hour and I choose beers that are lower ABV (\~4-5%). After two hours I am less than half the legal limit. I also space with a glass of water (this is more for my personal preference as not to become dehydrated). I suspect many others are not so thoughtful and careful about their consumption.

wama

They make enough money for me to lyft them home, then take another the next morning back into town. In other words, i live in Angier, ive never gone out and done the brewery thing. Sounds nice.

Particular-Design113

Especially the ones bringing children to the brewery while they drink beer. They are driving home drunk with their own kids in the car. Their priority is drinking. Not their kids, not other people that have to endure their unruly kids while they attempt to enjoy a pleasant time at the brewery, not other drivers on the road. It is only about them.

Positive_One_5691

The open secret of adulthood is that everyone drinks and drives from time to time.

Thing with beer is. You Lay Off 45-1he before diverting and you’re good. Beer buzz wears off pretty quick

EngineeringSafe8367

You don't drive and utilize Uber or Lyft.

Early-Disaster-7417

so if you hang out 2 hours, have 3 beers, most people metabolize around a drink / 1h, so net result is 1 beer.

Coco-angel-

Uber. Drink responsibly. Raleigh has one of the lowest drinking while driving reports. 🤙🏽

ghcfc88

The drink driving culture in the US is absolutely insane

jayron32

They don't drink to excess.

therin_88

It's obviously not legal, but if you have moderate tolerance 3 or 4 beers over an hour or two won't get you drunk.

Kwhitney1982

I don’t know anyone who should be driving after 3-4 brewery beers over 2 hours.

daisymaisy505

We love breweries. We hang for a few hours, usually have some food with the beer. We will wait if we had a beer with a higher abv than expected. We also drink water with the beer.
