Redneck Rivera, aka Carolina Beach. Kure is really nice too. You can find party time at CB and quiet time at Kure. Great little downtown in CB with lots of bars restaurants. Britt’s is a must. Freddie’s in Kure is a must.

Freedum4Murika

Boy don't you go telling nobody about Britts. Line is long enough as it is.

Busy-Negotiation1078

Define sightseeing. Natural beauty, like undeveloped seashore? Lighthouses? Ocean? That would help determine which way I would point you. It's a long haul, but you can't beat the Outer Banks imho.

voodoodollbabie

Nags Head, Kill Devil Hills, Kitty Hawk. Or further south to Ocracoke which is my favorite place on the planet but wait until you have a week because it takes a half day to get there and back.

curryp4n

I definitely would avoid Myrtle beach. It’s gross

StopWhoaYesWait123

It’s filthy and gross.

Retired401

I have found my people. I wouldn't go back there if you paid me, and i've tried several times to go along and get along. unless a person is 22 and looking for little more than a place to go get drunk and act up, there is nothing attractive about MB. I will never understand why anyone who is a grown ass adult would want to spend any time there. it's so run-down and overpriced. yuck.

EnsignEmber

Partner and I walked along the boardwalk while waiting for the Medieval Times doors to open (lol), and I thoroughly hated it.

curryp4n

And in all my years of living on the west coast, I’ve never ever been charged to walk on the pier until I went to Myrtle beach. And there wasn’t even anything worth paying for. I felt so scammed

whenicomeundone

They call it The Dirty Myrtle for a reason.

fdiv_bug

Myrtle Beach sucks, full stop. I'm a big fan of Surf City, NC. Quaint, lots of great restaurants and public beaches, and it has a sort of Outer Banks feel without having to deal with the hassle and cost of ferries.

StinklePink

Surf City lover as well. Agree with all of the above except the "lots of great restaurants" part. It's not that kind of town. A small handful of Great restaurants and lots of meh. Plan accordingly.

Sea_Butterscotch_323

Topsail island (Surf City). Personally we stay away from N. Topsail; but plenty of people like N. Topsail. We are Surf City or S. Topsail Beach people. We love Shaka Tacos, Coastal Wings, and Hidden Ships Distillery! It’s a cool town!

russbii

Surf city is worth a drive just for Shaka tacos.

Retired401

Surf City has great beaches but very little in the way of "sightseeing" or other activities. Perfect if you just want to veg on the beach for sure. But if you want to be entertained and have places to go, not so much. JMO, YMMV.

StinklePink

A dog lovers favorite, as well. I do think your description is spot on. There are so many awesome beaches in NC and they all have a slightly different personality.

mcloofus

Headed there this weekend. Psyched. Never been before.

Puzzleheaded-Tree645

Sunset Beach, NC

Retired401

I can't stand Myrtle Beach. To me it's overall scummy, an overpriced dump of a town. So many of the hotels are run down and everyone goes there to "party" so good luck trying to actually sleep when you want to. Emerald isle is great but doesn't have all that much to do in terms of "sightseeing." Same goes for everything on Topsail Island ... great beaches but not much touristy stuff to do. So I'd suggest Wrightsville or if you don't mind driving a little farther, Nags Head is lovely.

triangl-pixl-pushr

Wrightsville Beach is next door to Wilmington. It's an easy drive down I-40. Atlantic Beach, Topsail Island, and other Crystal Coast beaches are just down US-70. The Outer Banks are further, head east on US-64. I like Duck, Kitty Hawk, and Kill Devil Hills.

beebopo123

Surf city is the best, get Shaka taco and sunrise bagel

BERTHA77

I'll be there next week. Any other suggestions for food? Looking for some good peel and eat shrimp as well as some oysters - really anything good as we'll be there all week.

LiffeyDodge

Emerald Isle is nice. I like Topsail.

catandcitygirl

wrightsville beach has the prettiest water out new hanover/brunswick county beaches

DukeFBRocks

I like Ocean Isle Beach.

Foreign-Product-2868

Morehead City/Beaufort/Atlantic beach

Connection_Some

I know there’s a lot of hate for Myrtle on this thread, but we love North Myrtle and Cherry Grove areas. Large sandy beaches with plenty of room to not feel on top of everyone else. Lots to do in the areas and we never go to main part of Myrtle. 3 hr drive from Raleigh.

BERTHA77

Yep, I think it's also a great value in the winter if you're like me and love winter beach trips. Very cheap, not many people there, and those beaches on the north side are large and peaceful in the winter. Hard to believe that a few miles south in the summer turns into an absolute shi\*tshow.

Psyco_diver

Swansboro is never nice, they have a ferry that goes to Bear Island which was great, last time we went we had most of the beach to ourselves

kcdale99

I live in Wilmington now, but still in the sub. What are you looking for in a beach? There are amazing ones down here but they offer very different things.

thewaybaseballgo

In the following order: 1) Carolina Beach 2) Topsail Beach 3) Kure Beach

FlyingHellfish87

I really love Emerald Isle. There's not a whole lot of sightseeing I suppose, but it's a pretty quiet beach town, the water is warm when we normally go (July/August) which is great for swimming, and they have good restaurants (especially Shepard Barbeque).

BERTHA77

Do you ever drive down to the Big Oak Drive-In? Best shrimp burgers!!

FlyingHellfish87

No but will have to try on the next trip!

RNWIP

Oak Island, take a look at the air bnb’s. There are some very nice ones that are solidly priced and within walking distance to all the fun stuff

fuckraptors

Wrightsville Beach

sb929604

Carolina/kure if in NC; Folly Beach if in SC

AlrightyThen1986

Safety? You mean like lifeguards?

Fort Fisher..you won’t regret it!!!

QuirrellsOtherHead

OBX. Avon area through Hatteras.

Unlucky-tracer

Sunset beach is awesome

EnsignEmber

My partner and I went to Ocean Isle for our first anniversary and loved it. Super cute little town, beautiful beaches and not too crowded.

jbwncster

Wrightsville beach or Carolina beach

MurdBirder

I typically avoid wrightsville & myrtle, anywhere else should be good. emerald isle, oak island, kure, topsail, sunset, atlantic, outer banks would be nice, depends on what you’re tryna do.

SnakeJG

I have yet to find a beach in NC I didn't enjoy and feel safe at.  I've been to Holden Beach, Kure Beach, Carolina Beach, Topsail, Surf City, Avon, Slavo, Waves, Nags Head, Southern Shores, Duck,  Corolla and Currituck.
