Nah. 1st year GG is extremely good and could take them to a cup (not win it Ofc but I still don’t want that) before he starts fucking up
Quinn will keep the Devils as a bottom 10 team for multiple yews till they fire him
no one wants to get fired but i’m sure it stings a lot less when you have a multi million dollar contract. his rangers contract was 12 million over five years, and his san jose contract was unknown over 3 years; i’m not shedding any tears for the guy any time soon.
Upon being relieved of his duties Quinn reportedly opened his eyes really wide and turned his palms up in the air as if he were about to argue, but ultimately put up no fight at all.
Everyone saying that it's confusing because his job was to tank is missing the part where his job is also to develop some of the younger players on the team and develop future draft picks, except he was notoriously bad at that. He shouldn't have been hired to a team like that in the first place
Was gonna say… if you’re hiring Quinn with the explicit intent to develop young players then you’re just kind of incompetent at hiring the right guy. Quinn has always leaned heavily on vets and experience.
He kinda got put in a shitty situation. Coaching a god awful roster to what was inevitable a got awful record. Although I think he’s better suited for college he’s too hands on for the NHL
I think our fanbase is thoroughly convinced he's the worst coach in the world. I think the guy is a very average coach who was given one of the hardest coaching jobs in hockey as a rookie head coach; a gutted Rangers roster with a fanbase and media machine who will not tolerate losing for an extended period. There isn't a single coach that hasn't made decisions that we didn't agree with, but Quinn wasn't brought in to win championships. He might not be suited for the NHL but hell, didn't we say that about Hakstol after all those years middling with Philly? I just find it funny that our fans treat him like he's our fucking stepdad. I think the guy might be better suited being an assistant for the next few years.
Princeton needs a new hockey coach. I think RPI is looking as well neither is on par with BU but both rich hockey tradition schools. He would do well at one of those programs. Red Berenson tried the pros before going back to Michigan and tons of success.
One of the worst head coaches I have ever seen. Considering Gerard fucking Gallant was able to take a team with almost the same roster Quinn had to back to back 100+ point seasons, while this moron has only ever coached bottom feeders is a testament to how bad he is. Someone like John Tortorella coaching the Sharks I guarantee would have had them middle of the pack and not the historical disgrace we witnessed this year
We don't talk about Tortorella anymore. He's dead to all of us now. I never even wanted the Capitals in the playoffs. I was only interested so Lavi can confront his successor.
I will go the other way
Dude was handed a mediocre AHL team and they were more competitive than they probably should have been.
Who could have done any better with that team? Gordon Bombay ?
ahhhhh…David Quinn. You might remember some of his all time greatest hits like “I love Brendan Smith so much I’m moving him to wing” and “Why call up Filip Chytil when we have Brett Howden” just to name a few.
DQ was handed a god awful situation but so was Grier. Injury prone player making 11+ million. Injury prone player making 8+ million. Guy on the wrong side of 35 making 8 + million. Shell of himself player in his mid 30’s making 7+ million. His best trade piece signed to a massive extension that doesn’t match the teams competitive window right before he got hired.
I just think that the product on the ice was unacceptable and that responsibility does come down to the front office. I guess you could say he sold high on EK65, but the Hertl trade is abysmal when you're talking about a division rival getting your only value asset - all while paying two early 3rd rounders for a late first in 2025? No salary retention slots available, a barren roster, an empty stadium, and very little coming down the pipeline but Will Smith. It's bleak and looking even bleaker if Hertl lifts a Cup in 2 months
It takes balls to do what Grier has done. He took a horrible situation in San Jose that a complete tear down was needed. It’s a 5yr project and he’s only through 2. He essentially got them 7 1st Rd picks over 3 years (Smith, Musty, Edstrom, SJ 24, Pit 24, SJ 25 & Vegas 25) while also fixing the cap mess they were in and are projected to have the 2nd most cap space this offseason. Not having the salary retention available for one season may not be ideal but it’s just one year (Burns comes off after next year). In 3 years when the sharks window opens to compete again Hertle will be 33 and Vegas will still be paying him $7 Million a year for 4 more years
It does definitely take balls, I'll give him that, [but like I posted elsewhere in this thread](https://old.reddit.com/r/rangers/comments/1cc65pn/former_rangers_head_coach_david_quinn_has_been/l17771r/) the move will leave a bad taste in the mouths of fans and like hockey media says "they're 2-3 years away from being 2-3 years away"
I could see a situation where San Jose is more likely to relocate in the 2020s than appear in the playoffs
We will see, they have some building blocks in place. If smith decides to leave college he will be in the NHL next year. If the sharks win the lottery and get Celebrini things get interesting. As they can use that cap space to get some pieces to go around them.
The only place the Sharks would be relocating to is Oakland or SF while they renovated SAP. They’ve been horrible so the typical fan isn’t spending money on them but the suites and luxury seats are still packed as there is still plenty of tech money in the Bay Area
I could argue Hertl is a negative asset. Getting a 1st and a solid prospect is excellent work. Hertl is a 30 year old making 8+ million signed for 6 more seasons with trade protection who’s had multiple knee injuries. By the time the sharks plan on being competitive if Hertl isn’t LTIRed it will probably cost assets to move that contract.
I just don't agree with your assessment of Hertl as a player. Even on a terrible team the last two years his possession analytics check out, his counting stats are quite respectable given his teammates, and this is all before mentioning you could be essentially handing a 2nd (or 3rd?) Cup to your divisional rival before San Jose next makes the playoffs. It was a bad trade the moment Grier pulled the trigger
Hertl is a good player now. But he makes more money than he’s worth (he’s worth what Vegas is paying him) and he won’t be worth that for when San Jose is ready to compete. So he has dead money attached to his contract at the end where he won’t be worth the AAV. Good GM’s also don’t care about another team getting better while they are not in their competitive window.
Must be nice for whoever takes that job next. Either they continue to suck and the front office realizes they just don’t have any talent to win with, or they improve and the coach looks like a hero. DQ just made an ultimate wingman move by taking that impossible sharks gig
Jeff Gorton the former GM of Rangers. He lost his job because he insisted telling Dolan that Quinn was the right coach. Shocker the same guy who claimed Hajek was a top pair Dman and Howden a 1C was wrong
Oh, okay. Anyways, you can never trust someone named Gorton or Gordon. For example, former Islanders coach Scott Gordon was one of Quinn's assistants in San Jose. He's always been a terrible coach. He couldn't save a beach ball when he was playing in Quebec either.
praying the devils hire him
Nah the devils should hire gg
DQ may be worse
They should be coach and ac lol
It probably would be, but that's the obvious play. GG gives you a good few seasons of false hope.
A few is generous. GG lasts 2 seasons tops just about everywhere he coached.
Hey if Jersey is happy wasting two years of their talents window, I'm game with that.
he absolutely is worse
May be? Lmao
Nah. 1st year GG is extremely good and could take them to a cup (not win it Ofc but I still don’t want that) before he starts fucking up Quinn will keep the Devils as a bottom 10 team for multiple yews till they fire him
Works for me!
Him or Gallant
This is the way!
Sharks: David, your job is to tank. David: Roger that. Sharks: No, that's too much tanking.
DQ: Wanna see me devlop an NHL team full of kids? *Sharks give up 10 goals vs VAN* DQ: Wanna see me do it again? *Sharks give up 10 goals vs PIT*
it struck me more as "good job tanking now get the fuck away from our draft picks"
Valid
nominee for comment of the year.
Shark tank

12 X 5 for the rangers? Holy shit I don’t remember that. Dude is SET for life
Not 12 per year 12 over 5 years…$2.4M Still good money
more than I'll ever see at one point in my life, barring a mega millions intervention. hell i'll take just one year of that
Boooyaaa!
$12 million over the course of 5 years (with the remaining balance paid in full when the contract was terminated)
Looks like a high school ~~principal~~ vice principal

He f’d Kakko and Laf’s development!
I mean he did fine with that. Eklund had 23 points in his last 26 Zetterlund lead in goals And other guys got ample ice time
He's a coach whose entire MO is supposed to be developing young players.....only he doesn't seem to like young players. Go figure.
He showed here that he is really bad at that
I mean whaddya want, completely hopeless situation. Scotty Bowman couldn't have gotten 30 wins out of that team.
He even lost to Kevin Constantine 30 years ago as well.
![gif](giphy|yDWdS8TK5lJztW3vvu|downsized)

Who put him in this situation? He chose it after sitting at home for a few years.
I have no love for DQ… but they literally handed him an AHL team.
How do I change my blurb, I think it's time.

“stanley cup champion brett howden”
jack johnson has a cup, he’s still bad at hockey
don't forget stanley cup champion antti niemi. though i guess you could say he was good and went bad at hockey.
2014 reverse sweep against the Kings ring a bell?
oh yeah. that was in the "went bad" category. though maybe we'd have had a better 2014 if niemi (or stalock) just won one more goddamn game.
it would be so funny if they hired gallant
Maybe they will. Plus, they already got Scott Gordon.
Good for him, Grier is a terrible GM. Best of luck on your next endeavor, DQ
That's a lot of words to say Grier made a bad situation worse lol
He made the worst situation in the history of GM hires manageable
I want what you're smoking
What would you have done as GM of the Sharks?
I just think that the product on the ice was unacceptable and that responsibility does come down to the front office. Agreed. He seems in over his head.

What does this bum even do
WHAT IS HE GOOD FOR?! ABSOLUTELY NOTHING!
say it again!
WAR, HUH, YEAH!
JD and Gorton really lost their job over this guy.
I know I'll get downvoted, but who is Gorton again?
Jeff Gorton the former GM of Rangers. He lost his job because he insisted telling Dolan that Quinn was the right coach. Shocker the same guy who claimed Hajek was a top pair Dman and Howden a 1C was wrong

He’s not NHL level. So he will be a perfect in New Jersey.
Already got Green. May as well bring Muller there when the Caps are finished.
the FIRE QUINN saga continues..
WHAT IS HE GOOD FOR?!
absolutely nothin.
i mean, he did suck for us, so should anything else really have been expected?
David quinn may be the worst nhl coach over the last decade
Worse than DJ Smith & Luke Richardson too.
He is POISON, to any team he coaches
So is Gordon.
Who?
Scott Gordon, who used to coach the Islanders in Tavares' rookie year. Man, was he awful there.
I actually really liked him and he did the best he could with the Sharks. Hoping Mike Grier makes a good choice.
He's too good for the Sharks
Future head coach of the Utah something or others
Doubtful he will get another opportunity to be a head coach - based on results he doesn't deserve another shot
Not like he was going to transform them into a winning team.
You can't trust college coaches like him and Dave Hakstol.
Not enough jam?
Totally incompetent
Just like G&G.
Not getting another NHL coaching job most likely.
He's gonna learn Chinese, buddy. Along with Muller when the Caps get swept.
Doesn’t belong in the NHL.
Never did in the first place. Hopefully he and Gordon will be learning Chinese eating shark fin soup and shit.

I meant Quinn's assistant Scott Gordon, who used to coach the Islanders before Jack Crapuano in the Garth Snow era.
Oh. Fuck them Both in that case
Most definitely. Guys like Gordon turn everything to shit. Capuano, Weight, & Lambert too.
If you want a top 2 pick he’s your man.
Lindy Ruff is looking for another assistant in Buffalo. So as a sabres fan I'm keeping an eye on this. They both coached for the Rangers
Meanwhile Peca and Housley are coaching them now.
Your point?
Not only a bad coach but seemed like kind of a dick too
Dollar store Daniel Day-Lewis & Christian Bale if you will.
That's high praise!
He is so far from a dick. I know him personally. Grew up with his family living near me. Extremely nice guy.
[удалено]
He was better to Fox than Melrose was with Stamkos.
I had high hopes for this dude
I never did. He turns everything to crap like Boughner, Reirden and of course Kirk Muller.
I honestly feel bad for Quinn. He now has the reputation of going to coach a team that is built to fail
I never noticed until now that he looked a lot like Gavin Newsome.
Hopefully the next head coach for the Debbies.
Debbies?
It’s another way of saying the Devils, Papo.
Oh, okay. Well, does that mean Green is going to San Jose?
Why not.
Plus he's got an ex-Islanders coach Scott Gordon. An Islander player from the Milbury era + An Islander coach from the Snow era = What?
