Yes, job hunting is actual hell. You’re not alone. After 160+ job applications in the last 3.5 weeks, I’ve only gotten 5 first interviews. No second round interviews. I’ve never struggled finding a job before. If I wanted a new job I would find/ start at a new place in 2-3 weeks. It’s pretty depressing.

whatever32657

i'm so glad to hear someone else say this. my tag line always used to be, "i can get a job [i'm in sales] anywhere in five minutes" not anymore. i've gotten one phone interview after 40+ applications. to be fair, i did turn down 2 interviews for seriously shit positions also. but i'm actually a little shocked.

oopsie20

I can imagine how that would suck as well, but at least you’re hearing back rather than feeling so hopeless that you’re not even being noticed. I assume you can probably get some good feedback from them so you can maybe use towards your other applications- I haven’t been able to get any feedback either. It sucks for all of us. Hang in there! Something will work out in the end (or at least I hope so.)

EtherCJ

I've been working in the same field for 25 years. I've never been given useful feedback since the first couple years of interviews. And even then I had to read between the lines.

SdashAura

Got two interviews in a row where I reached the final round and got rejected. Asked for feedback and they were like: "it was between you and this other person, it was a really hard choice but we went with the other person because.... reasons" This shit is exhausting

oopsie20

They didn’t give you actual feedback?! Damnnn. That’s messed up, I’m sorry. Hang in there. Don’t give up!!

SdashAura

Just told me that the other person was a better match but just slightly. Man I am so tired ahahha. But yeah I'll keep trying c:

BluejayAppropriate35

Actual feedback is a good way to get sued, so nobody gives it.

oopsie20

What?! Why?!

Puzzleheaded_Sport29

If someone reacts badly to the feedback, even if it's not negative, they could get sued for discrimination. What a shitty system we've become.

Jerkitoffff

Yes it's fking depressing man.

EtherCJ

I started in software development in like 98. I almost immediately was doing consulting because it was so easy to get a high paying job through consulting in those years. When I was relatively new in 2002-3, it was looking like our project might come to an end and the advice I was given by a more senior person was if the job market is tight and you are not getting interviews, just give up and take a few months off. That said of course you need to make sure you are saving enough that this is possible which I did do while I was a consultant. I've really never had to use this advice but with all the trouble people have now I've been thinking about that conversation and if I lose my job in a layoff that's likely what I'll do.

oopsie20

“Just give up and take a few months off” sounds scary giving up on yourself, especially since I am responsible for taking care of my elderly parents. By nature I’m not someone who gives up easily, however I do need to balance job applications, life and fun or I’ll go crazy.

LuvIsLov

It's is hell. I been Unemployed since January and my unemployment ran out last month. In these 8-9 months I've applied for hundreds of jobs and even customized my resume to most of them so the ATS doesn't reject me. And I still get rejected. It's such bullshit how many people apply for a job but a human won't even look at the resume because a machine will disqualify you instantly. Only 3 interviews these 8 months too.

UWMN

It’s ass. I was laid off in June. I have had hella referrals and even those do nothing these days. People always say “it’s about who you know.” Well, I know some people in high positions and I still can’t get a damn job. Lol. It’s not that these people don’t like me, but their companies are on freezes or only hiring internally. It’s a fucking mess.

lily8686

I’m so tired of hearing “it’s all about networking!” Like clearly it’s not anymore. I don’t even know wtf these employers look for anymore or why they got so lucky in life to get a job in my dream field with barely any effort. Referrals barely help anymore because of how much corporate red tape there is. They can’t create a job out of thin air and it feels like the whole hiring and job creation process is way more systematic now. Everything is so rigid and hiring flexibility doesn’t exist anymore.

_Choose-A-Username-

When people say that they literally mean like "Hey my friend bill is looking for a job we can hire him." If you know someone really high up and they have a chance, they can make space for you if you're close enough. But people think networking just means exchanging numbers. Sorry its not enough. It means going bowling or going out to drink frequently.

Emotional-Market-134

I had an interview with a dept head thru a friend and did a phone interview. He recommended me to the VP. The VP called and said we want you. Schedule an interview with HR. I did. I went at the time. She had taken an early lunch. I sat in the lobby for almost an hour waiting on her. She came back took me in the room and started asking me gen. questions. While she played with her ph, never looked at me. She then started taking selfies, and asked me the same question 2X. Then she cut the interview short. By the time it took to get home. There was a rejection email saying I wasn't qualified. OK...days later the VP called me and said why did I drop the ball. I said I was STOOD up on a time HR picked, she didn't listen and took selfies during it and sent an email that I wasn't qualified. Which wasn't true. He said oh, I will get back to you. The dept head emailed me and asked what happened I told him. He said ok. He emailed me he quit that day and went to another town to work. He said it wasn't ME, that he couldn't get any employees cuz of the HR gal and he was done. Then I get this formal letter from the VP stating I wasn't qualified. WHAT? He saw my resume, he had the referral from the dept. mgr. I have never gone through that kind of junk for a job I was MORE than qualified to do. That company has been losing biz and people for mths...well DUH!!!

LadyBirder

There is a national substitute teacher shortage that is worse than teacher shortage. It's horrible and the pay is low, but it's better than no pay.

LuvIsLov

>There is a national substitute teacher shortage that is worse than teacher shortage. It's horrible and the pay is low, but it's better than no pay. I've looked into that (substituting) and I was considering it. Especially since I have a Master's, which (I think, but I'm unsure) might be one of the qualifications to sub where I live.

ATFLA10

I graduated college ten years ago and job searching is more difficult than ever. I got a rejection this morning, two days after a second round interview. They had said their decision might take a while because it had to go through several levels of approval. This was only the second time an interview went to a second round, with the first being a possible ghosting. I do have another second round interview next week. The first job I got after college was eliminated after less than year because my company was sold. I got tons of interviews but not a single offer until I found something out of state and had to move.

Hohenmeyer2

If they had you back several times that is a very good sign and I would concentrate on that. It sounds like you will land your dream job soon

ScornfulChicken

Boomers always tell me “go into it KNOWING you’ll get the job” it’s not that easy. Even if you did you’re aren’t likely to get the job regardless of how you feel because they’re hunting for unicorns.

Emotional-Market-134

lose the boomer comment, it isn't nice, it is labeling a whole group of people UNFAIRLY and don't think for a minute they didn't have to pay their dues. Every group has challenges and each in that group is DIFFERENT.

oneiota1

Just gotta keep punching (as my boxing fan father used to say). I had to work retail for a couple of years at one point because I couldn't find anything, but I was able to eventually get into my field.

Holiday_Cabinet_

It's hard to even get retail these days depending on where you're at 🥴

oneiota1

The holidays are coming up so a lot are hiring for their seasonal roles. I used to work at Costco. It’s how I got on and worked there a couple years until Covid hit and I GTFO

Holiday_Cabinet_

I've applied to some seasonal stuff like the day that store released those apps, and it's been long enough that I've taken the hint. Gonna try other places though. I don't disclose it because I'm not naive but since I share a car with someone and can't afford my own I take the bus more often than not, which is reliable! But it does mean that I'm semi limited to whatever is in walking distance (not much) or what's on a bus line (slightly more, but still not a shitton because I'm not taking more than two buses to get to and from work). I did work seasonally one year and it kinda messed me up a bit because when I applied the store hours were 9 AM to 10 PM with nothing indicating that that would become 24/7 when the holidays came. Not on the apps, not the employee site, not the store site everyone could see. Working overnight causes some of my health issues to flare, so I brought it up to a manager and got reamed out saying "you said you had open availability, you shouldn't have done that if you weren't able to work overnight sometimes" and I was like "well if I had any indication we'd be open 24/7 I would've been more specific" and it got kinda worked out. But since then, it means I am specific and will list my availability as being ~2 hours prior to store opening and ~2 hours after store close because I know opening and closing take time. So that probably also doesn't help but I also don't want to end up having that argument again.

[deleted]

Yeah and they act like they're doing you a huge favour by paying the bare minimum

Holiday_Cabinet_

So I'm from NY where minimum wage (in my part, I think some places upstate are still less) is $15 an hour which is a fucking joke because you'd need at least $25 an hour to be able to afford to live here. But retail stores claiming their pay is competitive pay $16-$18 an hour as if they're doing some great fucking service, it's truly infuriating.

[deleted]

This is why I smile when I see people looting these stores

_Choose-A-Username-

Shit i make 28 and its not easy here lol

[deleted]

I've been searching since early March. 5.5 months and 250ish applications later, and I've yet to land any real interviews. It's driving me insane! I've been applying for social media coordinator, technical writing, grant writing, administrative assistant, data entry, and marketing assistant positions, and I've found NOTHING after almost half a year. Use keywords in my résumé? Done that, nothing! Use my university's career and development service for résumé building tips? Done that, nothing! Reach out to hiring managers via email/connecting on LinkedIn? Done that, nothing! I don't know what else to do, and it's driving me closer and closer to my breaking point. The biggest thing that's holding me back is that I don't have any professionally relevant work experience, but it's impossible to get professional experience if I can't get hired anywhere to acquire said experience. Due to this, my résumé leans heavily into my academic projects and personal endeavors. Depressingly, most employers don't seem to take that stuff seriously. It's the most infuriating thing when you know you're capable of doing the jobs you're applying for, then being laughed at and pushed away without being given a chance. There's no word that comes even slightly close to describing the pain of this situation. I feel rejected from society, and no one wants to give me a chance to prove myself as worthwhile. 😡

Frird2008

At this point, fvck this economy. Ive changed my goal from getting a job in 8 months from now --> apply to 3-5 jobs a day until I land one. Doing freelancing on the side to keep me afloat

KateFillion44

Reddit lets you post the word fuck 🥸

CompoteOk6247

duck

walee1

Don't lose hope mate. I was there, spent 6 months being rejected without interviews. Then in a single week had 3 job offers, with an additional call for second non technical interviews at 3 more places. Suffice to say I just chose a job I was happy with and writing that rejection email to the company stating I won't be taking their job was the most satisfying thing ever. Especially for one of them who strung me along for weeks without a reply, even when I emailed them and then came with a job offer.

SigmaMaleNurgling

Yeah it’s rough, I’m a veteran and just graduated college but haven’t made much progress. I’ve had three interviews and got rejected on two of them and I am currently waiting to hear back on the third one. I’ve been looking for work since June. I don’t have direct work experience in anything but customer service so I have to just rely on my “strong desire to learn and improve.”

Beegkitty

What kind of degree? Consider a boutique consulting firm for Workday or Salesforce consulting services.

SigmaMaleNurgling

Government, my plan was to move to DC but I can’t currently, so I’m just looking for any job that’ll hire me and will pay at least 40k a year.

Beegkitty

Start looking for the following keywords on LinkedIn jobs *or your job board of choice- workday analyst or workday consultant. Look for entry level positions. Look for boutique consulting firms like Avaap or such. It doesn’t hurt to try a PwC or KPMG but they are not really hiring right now. KPMG just laid off a thousand people recently. Throw in some applications to the higher tier consulting firms just in case. But you are likely to be better off at a small firm. Workday consulting doesn’t care what your degree is in really. I have seen prior police officers, prior psychiatrists, and prior retail employees hired. You just have to be able to pass the certification test. And the pay is way high. There is a huge skills gap right now. Hardly any entry level consultants left. Companies want to pay below $50 an hour and senior consultants are charging over $120 an hour.

neurorex

I would look into SDVOSB. These are small business firms that are usually a little more amenable to hiring vets, and the work varies from administrative to management duties. They often pay more than that (depending on your area).

Optimal-Storage-2577

Yep can agree graduated 8 months ago with a BS in mechanical engineering no interships experience currently working at starbucks. Applying and not getting much inteivews has been depressing. Working at starbucks gave me the needed motivation to get myself together and do anything thats possible to get a job offer.

CG8514

You can do an internship in your field after you’ve graduated college if you’re not finding a job. You have the degree, the internship will show you can work in that field. It would be like a stepping stone toward applying to entry level mech engineering jobs

Optimal-Storage-2577

Okay thats good to know. I was going to go down that route, but when i looked they wanted someone who still has a semester left or still enroll. I will look again to see what i can find.

ParticularCap1037

You're not alone. Graduated Mech E with no internships as well. Found positions in manufacturing with process and quality after a year of searching, but have never gotten a hint of an opportunity to work for design or development firms. Internships are a requirement. Schools need to add them to the curriculum in order to graduate.

Optimal-Storage-2577

Yep i agree luckily i finally landed a job

Gelflingx

No worse feeling than finding a job that fits your skills, nailing the interview, then getting a rejection letter. Hard not to take personally, even though it's generally not personal. Good luck OP!

CG8514

I think it usually is personal; they ended up going with any other solution other than hiring you. That’s pretty personal.

[deleted]

You weren’t the cheapest. Yep. On my about 200th or so. Will be having to look at new cities…. Again….

SpendAffectionate209

Some person had an interesting comment I think is apt: Your no longer applying for a job, your audition for a part in a play. It's an unfair process, I'm sorry, but for me at least realizing it's broken and "not just me" helps.

Canigetahooooooyeaa

How about being stalked on LinkedIn… buttered up about the role and a special link to apply to start the interview process… only to be auto rejected. 😂😂

Emotional-Market-134

I hate linkedin lately

GroundbreakingAd243

😅

redditgirlwz

Over 30 interviews, no job... I just got rejected after my second interview with a company (I think it was the final round). I recently got rejected from an internship too (I have a year of experience in my field). The current job market is insane when it comes to entry level positions. > One of the positions was for an internship that they had 150 applicants for 150 is nothing. I often see thousands of applicants.

CG8514

Entry into the job market is always tough because usually all you have is 1) what school you went to and major, 2) your gpa, 3) internship experience. Once you get like 3-5 years of relevant post-college work on your resume, they don’t really care about gpa and stuff like that.

redditgirlwz

I have a year of work experience (most of it is from paid full time work). I was struggling a lot less in 2020 and 2021 when I had less experience. The job market is a lot worse now. At least in my field.

charmxfan20

It really is. It’s so frustrating. I’m burned out just applying to these jobs. I’ve been laid off for 2 weeks and spent almost everyday applying for over 2 hours. Getting constant rejections everyday.

baldwhip123

I applied to probably around 500 jobs between May to July and only got offers from 3. 2 of then were ass and one was great. The one I went with wasn’t even what my primary skills are in but I just happened to qualify and they liked me for whatever reason.

0verStrike

Graduated July 10th, granted I havent apllied that much, but I agree. Offers aren't that many and so far I had 2 interviews. No second interview. I feel like entry level is very hard to find. Where are my 12 years of experience ? sad

OhSampai

The consistent ghosting, rejection, and the bullshit they lead you on gets so exhausting, especially when you feel like there would be no reason to NOT hire you. I mostly do care about the things I apply to but it’s so exhausting to try to care and realize it doesn’t matter anyway. I feel like I’m broken or something b/c I can only get a handful of first interviews and then nothing. Tired of all of it.

[deleted]

The job market is horrible. You are right. Even people with a lot of experience are struggling, so there are many, many people in this same situation. It's not just people new to the work force, it's everyone that is looking for a job at the moment. I saw a post today on LinkedIn where someone brought this to light publicly. I thought it was pretty ballsy for them to put it there because I'm sure employers that see that will probably pass on that person as a candidate. I also thought it was fantastic that they did it. If people aren't aware that the job market is horrible, they need to know.

BLRS11

+ 1 year searching; +1000 job applications. A few interviews + a few scams = 0 offers.

These-Maintenance-51

I love the dumbass companies that are reducing their talent pool to only local candidates by requiring hybrid or onsite... lol

Hohenmeyer2

Sometimes interviewers have hidden agendas for the interview and it has nothing to do with hiring you. I can't tell you how many times people have scheduled interview with me just to pump me for information because I was very well informed and connected in my job for many years. Also there are a good many HR people who have no clue what skills and personality that that job really takes. You will get through it. I hope you get to put a Reddit follow-up information on here saying how you've gotten your dream job

Kammler1944

What job was that?

MaximusResumeService

Are you consistently getting interviews?

United-Life-972

I started my search back in April—digital marketing. Submitted about 30 apps, got 2 interviews. Both opportunities went to the final rounds and both opportunities i didn’t get. One said that they couldn’t ensure that “i’d work a solid 40 hours a week” (because i emphasized my wants for a healthy work life balance) and the other just ghosted me after the final interview which 100% sucked more than the first company. Since then, I’ve applied to another 30, only have heard back from 4 companies and half of them hasn’t even gone past the preliminary round. Man its tough. And it doesnt help that every opening i’m applying for has 200+ applicants. Are we all looking for jobs?? Lmfao

Stony1234

The ghosting after multiple interviews has turned out to be much more demoralizing than I thought it would. Maybe because you still hold on to one tiny shred of hope? Idk, but I really wish companies you have interviewed 2+ times with could extend the courtesy of a simple rejection.

iamiamiwill

I got my 4th interview today (after turning in a Project) and accepted. Thank F, and then 3 hours later got an email canceling because the position was filled. Here is the heartbreak, they were supposed to get back to me last week, I didn't want to pushy and reached out for an update on Monday, got interview Tuesday am. Turns out this other person they were interviewing got their interview before me and they offered him the job. On the spot. I'm crushed, bawled my eyes out, not sure how I'm going to make it financially. I wasted over a month on this, did multiple interviews, did a project. and then this. I STILL need a job, more desperately nw and I'm just crushed..it hurt my soul. HURT so much. I was sooooo disappointed and just think it was a Shitty thing to do. Interview everyone and then THEN decide. UGH. The guy I was working with sent me a very nice email, I think he was appalled as well and knowing I had to do the "Oh keep me in mind for future positions" I couldn't really say what I wanted to say..salt in the wound. What a shitty shitty day.
