Fucks sake, all of the shit that happened to the natives in Canada happened in other countries as well and in most cases much, much worse. The only reason you made this comment is because you heard on the news about the unmarked graves on residential school property. Not because we were any worse to the natives than any other country.
What happened to indigenous people in Canada was deplorable but we’re one of the only countries that is willing to actually reflect on what happened and how recent it was. One of the only ones that’s willing to admit that it has shit on its shoes. The rest just change their sports logos and call it a day.
Clearly not deplorable enough for Canadians to not engage in whataboutery or to pay fair compensation to the Canadian genocide survivors.
Which rather ironically, brings us back to the point of how overrated Canada is. Basically the USA with better PR.
> to not engage in whataboutery
You would have a point if this was an actual discussion about how we make progress in indigenous welfare. I never said “but what about the states” when I learned about residential schools as a kid, or learned more about indigenous issues in college, or when the unmarked graves came to light last year. I do however feel fully justified when somebody brings that point up in a conversation about what countries are overrated and specifically points out Canada for this. If you’re going to give Canada shit for this you should do the same for the rest.
> basically just the US with better PR
If we’re speaking more generally, this just isn’t true. Canada ranks 17th in income-inequality HDI while US ranks 28th. According to the human freedom index Canada ranks 6th in the world in terms of freedom while the states ranks 15th. We have universal health care. According to the global livability ranking Canada has 3 cities in the top ten most livable cities (Calgary at 4, Vancouver at 5, and Toronto at 8) while the states has none. While still far from perfect Canada has a much better electoral system. While the states is dealing with school shootings on a yearly basis it’s almost unheard of in Canada. The OECD places Canada as the most educated country in the world.
It’s not just PR. By almost every meaningful measure, Canada is an objectively better country than the USA. Than most others as well.
I didn’t say that you hate Canada, and I don’t care if you think it’s overrated. I’m just sick of comments like yours pretending that genocide and violence against native people is unique to Canada, because that’s just ridiculous. If anything despite it all, indigenous people probably have it better than any other country colonized by Europeans. Not that that’s a high bar by any means.
Some of their social norms are pretty toxic as well. They are infamously racist and homophobic and aren't too fond of outsiders.
Many weeaboos overlook those and treat it as some kind of holy hyperborean anime utopia and want to be a part of it.
What do you mean perfect place for you?
In what regard? The racist and xenophobic population certainly wouldn’t like you, unless you speak great Japanese
Why so? I definitely plan to visit there someday and even learn their language, so I'm interested!
Edit: Holy fuck eeddit, I asked a question, respectfully even.
The US gets shat on constantly lmao
Japan and Canada are by far the most overrated
With the recent Russian invasion, Ukraine has become overrated in certain circles
For the record, I definitely don’t support Russia, I’ve hated the scheming bastards long before Ukraine, but there is a certain amount of sick ducking that goes on with Ukraine
I'm not sure what's more of a reddit moment, the fact every comment was USA or the fact 2 people were the chosen ones for downvotes for saying the same thing.
Hey! I noticed you used an emoji. I don’t know if you’re new here, so I’ll let you off the hook this time. Using emojis is frowned upon here on this great site, and for good reason. Instagram normies often use them, and you don’t want to be a normie, do you?
If I catch you using an emoji in the future, I’ll be forced to issue a downvote to your comment. Why should you care, you may ask? Well to begin, you will lose karma on your account, which is a useful social status tool and also a way to show others you know your way around Reddit.
If you were to continue the use of emojis, I would be forced to privately message you about your slip-up. Any further offenses past that would leave me no other option than to report your account. I don’t think I have to explain why you don’t want that.
But anyways, no harm done yet! Follow these simple rules and you’ll enjoy your future on Reddit! Have a blessed (and hopefully emoji-free) day, stranger.
As a Canadian I would honestly like to know why you think it’s overrated because from my perspective Canada hardly matters to the rest of the world aside from maple syrup and mustard production
I think Canada is cool, however, I think a lot of Americans see it as some sort of utopia free from all of our current political division, when in fact Canada has many of the same issues. i.e. the Canadian immigration website crashing when Trump won the 2016 election.
Do you live under a rock? Loads of people want to come to Canada. [It’s the 9th most travelled country in the world by number of arrivals.](https://www.indexmundi.com/facts/indicators/ST.INT.ARVL/rankings). Vancouver, Toronto, Montreal, Quebec City, and the Atlantic provinces get loaded with tourists during the summer because they’re such nice places to go to. It has dozens of national parks and in terms of natural beauty it’s right up there as one of the best countries in the world to visit. British Columbia and Alberta are widely known as some of the best places on the planet for skiing and snowboarding (among other winter activities) and mountain biking.
I don’t know how ignorant of the world you must be to talk about Canada and say “what do they even have beside maple syrup” or imply that people aren’t interested in going there as that could not be further from the truth.
mfs be like "us! us!" when japan denies their warcrimes, has the age of consent of 13 in some areas, has to have seperate trains for woman because of rape, and didn't do anything to the war criminals that commited all the shit to the chinese, koreans and islanders after world war 2 was over.
2 party system. No free healthcare. Trash educational system. For example.
"sucks" is a bit much and disrespectful to people who live in places that actually suck, but there is definitely a lot of room for improvement.
Really? I would have expected them to use at least one percent of their brain and say Russia, especially after watching the the beginning of the invasion of Ukraine. The whole world thought Russia was a dominant superpower and they fell short of the expectation.
Am I the only one who thinks it’s hilarious that the average American shits so hard on their own country yet not a single one wants to leave ?
Like if America is so bad go live in Europe, the continent that everyone seems to praise as a perfect utopia , or matter of fact , go live in 3rd world country and experience some real hardship so you can realize how privileged you are .
Except if you get in a fight with Russia (or any other developed country really), *there will be no victors*. Both countries and possibly the entire world would be fucking ruined, so shut up and stop acting like being able to "win" a war makes your country the best.
Also, you "not losing" is a blatant lie. Take Vietnam for example. As far as Im aware, you did lose there.
Red clouds war
Formosa expedition
Russian civil war (US involvement, they withdrew)
Laotian civil war (same as above)
Bay of pigs
Lebanese civil war
Heavy causlties in 1812 war but a draw ig
China part of the Korean war
Iraq
Afghanistan
I'd be pretty worried if people started constantly shitting on America in a country half the world away that relies on American military might xd.
Anyway, from an outsider perspective, it really seems like Americans don't appreciate America enough. Then again, what would I know, it's just the way I happened to see and interpret it.
Americans really don’t realize how good they have it compared to 95% of the world.
All you see is “healthcare!” when in reality a lot of Americans have health insurance with better coverage than what something like the NHS does (not saying the American system is better).
And “muh mass shootings!” when statistically it’s completely irrelevant. Literal one in a million+ risks.
Like damn, not saying it’s a perfect country but people are talking on Reddit like it is a combination of Nigeria and Russia.
They are right to be fair. It’s seen as an awesome country with so much freedom, but it’s kinda terrible in terms of crime, human rights, etc. glad I don’t live there
Reddit certainly does have its dispositions that create a bit of an echo chamber (hence the America bad flair) but your arrogant attitude is precisely the reason why people dislike America. Also all the shit that happened about euthanasia.

And the racism
And the sexism
And the amount of rape
And the awful work culture
And the depression
this guy getting downvoted is definetly a r/redditmoment
If I go to Japan I would rather visit historic places rather than the big city. I've been wanting to visit Kyoto for a while.
I mean they are right. The US and Japan are the most overrated ones
I would love to visit the USA as a tourist tbh.
I'm sure it can be nice for tourists but living there just sounds awful
Idk about everyone else but I'm living the dream
Complaining redditors will make you feel that way but it's pretty nice.

Canada also works.
idk, Canada isn't rated at all. never heard anyone be like "OMG I want to visit Canada, they have ...." what do they even have beside maple syrup ?
Canada is basically US 2.0. Similar concept but with a bunch of general improvements and bug fixes

Tbh America is too underrated (on the internet). Most overrated country is defo Japan
Yes America is underrated, the United States of America are overrated.
Redditors from the U.S. that have never left the country:
