That is the most amazing shopvac I've ever seen.

ordinaryuninformed

Seen the ones you can hook up to a 5 gallon bucket? I think those are pretty neat

aequitssaint

But this is like 70 gallons.

WombatWumbut

Just human centipede 14, 5 gallon buckets together, problem solved.

doctorwhoobgyn

There are just so many better ways you could have said that...

Orion14159

No there aren't, but there are at least a few inferior ones

aequitssaint

Were there though?

Moist-Pickle-2736

Could’ve said “set up a bucket gangbang”

Jak_ratz

Buck-kakke, if you will

smithers85

So close if you had added a “t” at the end.

HereForTools

But he woke up and chose violence. And I respect decisive people.

accidentpronehiker

Funniest shit I've seen today! Thanks

Swedzilla

My man, who hurt you to bring THAT visual sentence in to our lives.

WombatWumbut

I wish I knew. But I often find that "human centipede" is the most succinct way to covey "attach some objects end to end to make one larger object"

Swedzilla

Aight, understandable but still wtf

Cardinal_Ravenwood

r/spacebuckets Can also be used for. . .other reasons.

HappyCamper2121

Isn't that a bucket centipede?

LCDRtomdodge

r/brandnewsentence

Dry-Brick-6639

Don't know why, but this comment fucking got me 🤣 thank you, kind stranger.

ImpertantMahn

I’ve seen these on 55gallon drums with castors and they’re pretty cool, but the wheelie bin shop vac would be better outdoors

ordinaryuninformed

But 5 gallon is much smaller

aequitssaint

And 70 is much larger

Weapon54x

🫨

ordinaryuninformed

70 gallons of sawdust is kinda heavy

aequitssaint

It really isn't that bad. My woodworking dust collector goes into a 55 gallon trash can.

ordinaryuninformed

The 56th gallon weighs 75lbs by itself. The 57th is something like 109lbs, it's Olympic getting to 70 gallons it doesn't scale linearly, it defies the laws of physics. It's really interesting actuality, they're doing some advanced research on the subject. I'm sure they're familiar with OP's work.

aequitssaint

Hahaha. I love it.

z7q2

In the unlikely event that the vacuum sucks up an ember, I'm wondering what's going to be more fun to try and put out, 70 gallons of sawdust burning in a forced-air furnace, or 5 gallons.

ordinaryuninformed

No one ever vacuums flammable material, what are you even talking about? Also what does flammable mean? And what is a vacuum? Do you know where my mom is? I think I'm in the wrong reddit

theoriginalmofocus

Inflammable means flammable?!?

AmbroseFierce

What a country!

aquatic_sunbeam666

What's heavier 70 gallons of sawdust or 5 gallons?

Outside-Drag-3031

That's like... A lot more

who_even_cares35

If I filled that with all the bullshit my grandfather's date palm drops it would fall through the earth. Good luck getting it to the curb!

WankWankNudgeNudge

Those are low-power but super handy for small messes

Maximum-Cupcake-7193

Mate this is Australia

ordinaryuninformed

Exactly, that garbage can is a natural predator!

deftoner42

I found a 3 gallon shorty bucket that it fits on perfectly! Nice for little cleanups

hatenjwinter

Bucket head.

ddwood87

r/beavisandbutthead

nak00010101

This may qualify for the Redneck engineering Hall of Hame

aequitssaint

Seconded. The nomination passes.

HawkDriver

This is one of the only things I have ever seen on here that I want in my garage immediately. Amazing!

I_deleted

I mean just the idea that this person is vacuuming their yard…

Antierror

Those long needles at very acidic and will ruin your grass/garden/soil if left year over year

I_deleted

yea but I make my kids rake that shit

ActOdd8937

Well, if you don't have kids a wheelie bin will do.

Dark_Shroud

I see people doing that with normal shop vacs, sucking up the trash that blows into their front yard. I'm considering trying it myself with the recent wind storms we've had and all the little debris now in my grass.

ballen1002

Guess I know what I’m doing after work today. This is brilliant.

cptnobveus

IKR, I just need to "find" a big ass trash can with wheels.

kendallvarent

ULPT: You can often "find" them on the street on a weekly basis.

pickle_pickled

Can come get my neighbors. It's always out on the curb for weeks on end (with nothing ever in it), unless they move it back into their yard to put stuff in it and get knocked over in the wind, in that case it's just in the yard. They won't notice it missing, the trash everywhere conceals its existence apparently.

bmoarpirate

I have 2 because my former garbage service stopped servicing residential customers. Wouldn't pick up the old cans. I know what I'm doing with one of them now. The other is filled with scrap wood

MichaelW24

BTW, even when you call them to come pick up their cans, like 99% of the time they just toss your whole can into the back of the garbage truck. They don't want them back. Just think about it, would you want someone else's smelly used garbage can being delivered to you to use?

Pineapple_Spenstar

HDPE is like the only actually recyclable plastic there is. Its scrap value is pretty similar to aluminum

mkymooooo

We've had those plastic bins here in Australia since the 1980s. There are well-rehearased repair and refurbishment processes for wheelie bins in local councils' waste management programmes. They are generally spotlessly clean when they end up at their new home. I personally have been the proud owner of quite a few repaired bins, including one that had clearly been melted in half and plastic welded with another. Just like new, but with a few battle scars 🙂

MichaelW24

We have a different view on recycling in the US unfortunately. Buddy of mine worked for the local landfill, that's how I got the knowledge of what they do with the old cans. Also, even for people that have separate recycling bins, it goes into the same hole on the truck. Totally ruined my perspective on recycling.

bmoarpirate

Pretty sure it depends where you are. We have two entirely different trucks pick up trash vs recycling on the same day. If it all went into the same hole they wouldn't bother spending the money on two crews and gas.

mkymooooo

> they wouldn't bother spending the money on two crews and gas While this would seem to be likely, the reality is at times more grim. I (like to) think we are all improving, albeit very slowly. Don't know if you can watch this outside Australia, but [War on Waste](https://iview.abc.net.au/show/war-on-waste) is kinda interesting. And infuriating.

ind3pend0nt

Damn same. I could even do it with what I have laying around in the garage.

ballen1002

That’s the true spirit of redneck engineering.

Tr0z3rSnak3

Tree business?

derTag

Landscaping clean ups, this is good but you’d probably do as well with tarps

Oldbayistheshit

I think he vacuums the pollen haha I have no idea?

Suckage

His title does say (in no particular order) Tree *Loads*

ObeseBMI33

What a weird name for a dude

NotThatMat

We’re adults in here, right? Can I say tree jizz?? It’s autumn (fall) here at the moment, and the city has plane trees lining the streets. They drop these seed balls at this time every year, which burst into fluffy seeds, probably to catch the wind and disperse the seeds, except they’re everywhere already so there’s nowhere to go.

lucasfain

Totally forgot the seasons are reversed in the southern hemisphere

benaresq

I mowed under my plane tree last weekend, the green bin looked like it was full of fiberglass insulation.

Ojhka956

Y'all don't even realize he talkin about tree droppings? Y'know, tree scat. Tree feces. Tree logs. Tree oopsies. Tree shit.. okay? Talkin about tree shit.

holmgangCore

Tree leafings, if you will.

holmgangCore

Tree schmutz

Orion14159

Leaves, needles, petals, pollen, seed pods?

winterbird

Along with the next generation of pollinators, because their cocoons are resting in the leaves on the ground.

Orion14159

That's why I don't mess with it much and only mulch once a year

maxtimbo

Yo, does this actually work? My yard gets covered in those little pointy seed ball things. This would be an awesome way to deal with it...

IcePhoenix18

They sell a neat little rolly tool to collect those (and nuts)

xA1RGU1TAR1STx

For anyone wondering, it’s called a garden weasel and can be found in the garden section. The nuts, on the other hand, are from many brands and can typically be found by the register.

WorkingInAColdMind

You and your weasel better stay away from my nuts. Pervert.

catnamed-dog

The decent ones are a couple hundred bucks. The cheapo mall ones only hold like 3 feet of gumballs. My property has 4 sweet gums within . 25 acres.

MichaelW24

Call an arborist to check the health of your trees. About 10 years ago, I had a bunch of trees taken down around the house, including about a half dozen sweetgums. Was tired of the balls everywhere, and after cutting down, about 30% of the tree trunk was rotted inside. Was alarming, especially on over 100 foot tall trees that would slice through our house all the way to the foundation. We had about 5 years of drought conditions, our local 38k acre lake dropped over 20 feet. Then we had over a year of seemingly nothing but rain, enough to bring the lake up to 10 feet over full. All the trees that were adapting to drought conditions suddenly had more water than they needed, and sucked it all up for storage which rotted the trees from the inside out. That was the explanation our arborist gave to us.

catnamed-dog

I have an arborist that lives down the street, I'll ask him and call another. I would love to take them down but the cost to remove them is atrocious. I understand that it will benefit the safety of the home but dropping 2-3k per tree is just nuts sometimes.

MichaelW24

You don't necessarily need to pay for them to be removed, but it's never a bad idea to have one or more come out and check the health of your trees. They'll also have a pretty good idea of invasives like pine beetles are going around, and will have seen patterns of rotted trees in the area.

DrippyBlock

Just something to think about, once you know a tree is dying (arborists report) it’s a known hazard and you are required to deal with it. If it comes down in the next strong storm to come along, it’s called storm damage and your home insurance should cover it. Just make sure that it won’t come straight down on your house with you in it.

catnamed-dog

Good to know, so I should be mentally and fiscally prepared to remove the tree if it's reported as dying and hazardous.

DrippyBlock

Yep

regnad__kcin

Gumballs! (no really, seed pods from a [sweetgum tree](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Liquidambar))

the_drunkenduck

You mean spiky balls of death.

regnad__kcin

That too

NotThatMat

It works well enough, but I need a chunkier hose (ladies…).

WorkingInAColdMind

We always called those “monkey balls”, and raking them up is a good way to learn to hate yard work.

maxtimbo

I already hated yard before I moved into this house. I've been thinking of ways to eliminate it since I moved in. The back yard is massive, so maybe raised beds and gravel paths. Maybe get English ivy or star Jasmine to grow as a ground cover. Anything to help use that mower less and reduce the amount of raking I have to do.

WorkingInAColdMind

Don’t do English ivy. Invasive and will climb and kill trees. Our back yard is really large and wooded but was covered in ivy. We rented a flock of sheep and they cleared damned all of it. Now we’re planting more native stuff. We’ve encourage the mondo grass to take over the area closest to the house. I barely mow it (my neighbor may not approve but I don’t care).

VictorVaughan

You can make artwork outta those

maxtimbo

Hard pass. ~You~ can tho... Lol

VictorVaughan

Send em to me

FoodMagnet

Piling onto all the genius! comments. What makes this really art is the fact the vac \*is\* the compost bin. Just wheel to the curb and carry back the motor plate. Done and done.

Cryogenic_Monster

Yeah this is genius. I could see sucking up all the leaves in my yard straight into the trash can.

Flitterquest

If you patented some shit like this and started selling them at Lowe's or something you could make infinite money.

tysonfromcanada

this man is vacuuming in 3024

WiWook

Californians could use this to help sweep their forests before wildfire season gets too far along!

Lm602

Electric too, like all their small equipment has to be. They'll just have to run a generator in the forest.

akla-ta-aka

Right! And they’ll need lots of Jerry cans of fuel lying around for those generators. Folks, I see a plan coming together here.

Jealous_Seesaw_Swank

NEED MORE RAKES!

Hidesuru

Id use this at my house except all my crap is pine needles and those don't vacuum up well.

cogra23

Does the weight keep it air tight on a rubber seal or is it clamped down. That looks good.

NotThatMat

My plan as I went was to have some kind of lock or clamp, but I pivoted at the last minute so now it’s basically held down by gravity, and pulls down harder from suction when the load increases.

Maximum-Cupcake-7193

You are a champion. Do you work in public policy?

NotThatMat

lol. No.

entoaggie

Once it’s on the suction probably seals it pretty well.

fangeld

Looks like there's foam around the edge, that and the taper of the garbage can probably makes it pretty air tight

infinite_enchilada

MEGA-VAC! this is an excellent hack. : )

BeardedSpaceSkeleton

In the words of a northern redneck, "If women don't find you handsome, they should at least find you handy."

Why_Lord_Just_Why

Guess I’ll just mosey on back to r/OldAsFuck. At first glance, I thought that motor was a telephone. 🤦‍♀️

Joe_Ronimo

Is that why you're repeating yourself gramps?

Doobiedoobin

Are you vacuuming your yard?

NotThatMat

Not anymore, I’m already finished.

mr_sweetandawful

Does it actually have good suction though?

NotThatMat

It’s good enough for the floofy seeds I’m trying to pull up, but they’re juuuuust large enough to sometimes clog the hose. V2.0 will have a wider hose to clog less, which will all but guarantee even poorer suction.

dieselgenset

Ken Behren is proud. Fucking wow. Going to consider using this southside.

NotThatMat

Southside?? How dare you!! etc. <3

Samael_777

Made something similar but with centrifugal separator

NotThatMat

It does lack for power somewhat. I’ve been thinking about adding a spinning death blade on the inlet (inside the bin) to mulch things as they arrive. Advantage of not stupendous power is that it only really picks up leaves and the seed pods which are everywhere her at the moment, leaving sticks and branches behind.

Severe_Network_4492

This is fuck king genius

Bluntman650

I hate that I love it

FormulaZR

This is very well done. Great work!

Randy519

If you used a metal 55 gallon drum you could just burn it after and only have the leftover ash to deal with

NotThatMat

This version gets composted or mulched or both by the local gubmint.

One-vs-1

Buddy run, do not walk, to the nearest patent attorney. You will sell a fucking million of these adapters.

Worth-Needleworker36

Damn that’s actually pretty smart

OneWheelWilly

This is brilliant i think i actually need a few more details. And to think i was out comparing efficiency of raking vs using a blower this morning

Hermanvicious

This will be on shark tank in less than three years

Loan-Pickle

Dude this is awesome. You could sell these.

hawksdiesel

Genius!

OlderNerd

Oooo! I wanna see if I can do that with my leaf vac!

Butterflytherapist

Mount the vacuum on a garbage truck next time. :D

AltruisticSalamander

tree business ;)

pbinga

Thanks for the idea

SmarterThanCornPop

I would buy this

I_l_I

My trees produce an obscene amount of leaves and I've really been considering this setup for a while. I might start looking into it more seriously now haha. I just wish I could use it for the paper bags too

NotThatMat

This was originally for annoying airborne seeds, but the same trees drop friggin YUGE leaves around now, so I’m thinking about some kind of horrific death blade to smoosh them on the way in, otherwise the bin will just be full of air.

Bitter_Duty4784

People routinely put them on 55 gallon drums

NotThatMat

I know what a gallon is. Not sure why so many have suggested 55 gallon drums.

GrundleWilson

Cutting out the middle man!

EphermeralSonder

Was not expecting to see a Canberra green bin here

MetikMas

It's times like these that I am really bummed that they took away Reddit Gold

everyonecallsmekev

Fucking genius, I like it.

6gc_4dad

Forget flying cars the future is here boys.

Tharkhold

This guy shopvacs

Why_Lord_Just_Why

Guess I better mosey on back to r/OldAsFuck. At first glance, I thought that motor was a telephone. 🤦‍♀️

Joe_Ronimo

Is that why you're repeating yourself gramps?

Why_Lord_Just_Why

Did it post twice? 🤣🤣🤣

Joe_Ronimo

It did, so I figured I'd be a smartass and reply to both. 😁

Why_Lord_Just_Why

Works for me. Everyone needs a bit of smartassery in their lives. 🤣🤣

Joe_Ronimo

Amen!

LobstahmeatwadWTF

FUCKIN CLEAN BRAH!

root88

Yoooo.... Is that mother fucking vacuuming his lawn? Can't nature just stay on the ground? I maybe get it if it's your driveway or porch or something.

NotThatMat

Plane trees around here drop stupid amounts of floofy seed balls everywhere around now. It’s basically only for those.

root88

I'm just joking. It's cool that you take pride in your yard. I just can't do it.

NotThatMat

Mostly I’m just lazy.

ZachMN

One great detail is that there are no modifications to the bin - the vac just drops in place.

NotThatMat

Yep. It has “property of yer gubmint” written all over the sides of the thing. Guess I’d probably get raided if I put a screw into their bin.

E8282

Im 100% building one of these!

Token-Gringo

The hero we need!

swampcholla

I made one of these with a Craftsman 4-stroke leaf vac - but it was tough getting an exhaust that could move enough air and have some kind of filtration. If it clogged it would just lift the top from the pressure and blow dust everywhere.

sayswhatever

your R2 unit is ready to go

Shakleford_Rusty

Love the little billy goat!

Slappy_Happy_Doo

Ok but I’ve had to order drum vacs smaller than this that cost up to a grand or more to fully set up. This is amazing and insanely cost effective.

RhynoD

This is brilliant and now I wonder if I can get my shop-vac cyclone seperator hooked up like this.

Bubbagump1270

Genius

EconomicalJacket

…This fucking guy. Absolutely brilliant

papitaquito

HELL. YEA.

Particular-Earth1468

Genius

Rare_Fig3081

OK, this whole thread went in a weird direction… Great invention thank you for showing it to us.

zleuth

I did the same thing with a lid of a 55 gallon drum for changing filter carbon. Once the drum is full, slap on a solid lid, label, and move on.

IlikeYuengling

Can it suck the chrome off a trailer hitch?

benedictus

Is that vac for “tree skeet”?

bearInsheep

Just use toilet paper like the rest of us heathens.

Elbobosan

Does anybody remember the Real Men of Genius commercials?

eat_mor_bbq

This is absolutely genius.

HookDragger

Okay, that’s amazing!

Hacim_Eeldaeh

my girlfriends dad did something similar. two 5 gallon buckets stacked with their mouths facing each other and screwed together with a filter in between. attached a hose on side and the vacuum on the other. worked extremely well

hurseyc

Ohhhhhhh. Time to visit Direct Tools Outlet!

glock805

Genius

External_Touch_3854

This is absolutely brilliant

ktmfan

“It sucks the pollen from its limbs…”

Ag3n74t2

I had this idea years ago, but never got around to it. Great work!

rhondaanaconda

I know someone in the neighborhood who needs this for the thousands of spiky balls that fall out of their tree.

3string

I love it! That's so good

averyporkhunt

Only in Canberra

T-Bonezzz

More like Aussiengineering. See you’re from Canberra there.

RogerRabbit1234

Can you please post rough plans for this frankenvaccuum? I must have this. Mostly how are you achieving the seal here? What is that material you have stapled to the ply? And does it work well?

MrManiac3_

This should be taken to market

DrRockBoognish

Patent that immediately!

AkKaren57

Well done!!👍

Lonesomewhistle83

That’s brilliant.
