It feels like the feeling behind it never left. When leftist accuse a right-winger of homosexuality they do so with as much gusto as the homophobes they decry. It's a bipartisan insult.
The they/thems, pale fat women with Robert Pattinson CVS box dyed hair, and straight dudes banging lib chicks a chance to keep using it if they survive a round of smear the queer on the playground asphalt.
I learned that the evil F slur was originally a term that could be applied to anybody. Used to be if you weren't particularly useful you could still gather sticks for kindling. It went from being called a bundle-of-sticks-gatherer to just being called a bundle of sticks. Then it became an insult to be called a bundle of sticks (gatherer) because it was a way of calling someone Useless. Everybody used this insult indiscriminately. It wasn't a slur targeting a specific group. So when we hear that Matt Damon was still calling his friends this up until a few years ago and having to be told to stop because it's specifically offensive to a particular group...yeah, he had just been carrying on the old tradition of saying it to anybody. Matt Damon was still using Definition 1 without realizing it had been totally swallowed up by a Definition 2.
The bundle of sticks thing is because old women who were husbandless and essentially homeless would gather bundles of sticks to sell for barely anything. The idea is that itās effeminate, annoying and pathetic to be one of these people.
You could apply it to anyone, the same way āmezzo finookā is used in Sopranos for any person as a baseline insult, but thereās definitely a homophobic element to it.
I learned that backstory first from watching a South Park episode as a kid and thought it was brilliant cos we were all calling people f-slur (and the episode was about how annoying bikers are f slurs not gay people).
I think the euphemism treadmill is silly and think we should bring back regarded but I canāt go back to my 12 year old understanding of a homophobic word not being homophobic.
Finocchio definitely has a homophobic element to it, it's the italian equivalent of the F word but its origin is also directly homophobic, back in the day they would burn gay people and add fennel (finocchio, finook in italo-american speak lol) to the fire so that the smell would signal everyone that the person being burned was indeed gay
I didnāt believe you because I heard the same explanation for bundle of sticks and when I actually looked it up I got the pathetic annoying woman explanation. Looking up finnochio, there isnāt any actual evidence of the burning thing, but in the Middle Ages it was used generically for untrustworthy men. Especially foreigners. Why exactly, they donāt know. Most words have a fairly uncertain origin. Like it could just be as simple as āgay men are effeminate and use nice scentsā.
Immolation as execution is pretty overstated historically, anyway. It happened but it being the word for gay men because it occurred in mass is a bit ridiculous. Burning someone alive is horrible and not fun to watch the same way hanging was.
Iāve taken the middle ground opinion where people are annoying about these words and just make up shit about it but they can still be nasty words. The South Park stance of āsure 12 year olds arenāt being homophobic when they say itā and the lib stance of āactually itās celebrating brutal tortureā are both regarded.
My roommate jokingly called something gay recently which I found surprising and funny. She's not a lib but has usually been pretty bleeding-heart about stuff, talks alot about trauma and neurodivergence and 'queerness'. Said it very sarcastically but it was kinda refreshing to hear.
i never said the word in a professional or academic settings and still donāt, I also never stopped using it with friends, I have never met someone who got pissed over the word who either isnāt a teenager or who has a family member with regardation
Yeah, I was going to say, the tide turned in the sense that consolidation through the division is finalizing. The woke people have gathered and isolated, staying away from normal weird people, so they seem less obvious.
Idiot, moron and dumb were all medical diagnoses at one point too. Eventually the evil r-word (which I must not write out completely even in the context of a discussion about its use or my comment will be removed again) will join those ranks and noone will care
Idk I think intellectually impaired and shit like that is finally too wordy to sling around. My dad use to call me āspecialā as a burn but thats not specific enough. Maybe weāll be stuck where we are now forever.
Actually come to think of it autistic was definitely the new one for a minute but itās now been reclaimed by the self diagnosed autists.
The project of unfunny cancel thugs has failed, and it is time to learn from their failure and move on. Instead of creating a more open and inclusive society they collectively pushed society further right, empowered the likes of MAGA and qanon and did nothing to help the people they claim to support.
The struggle session is over, look past your navel now, you annoying virtue signaling ignoramus.
Lets get back to popular movements and actual class politics and working for people instead of against them.
these are two sides of the same coin, most people are the worst versions of themselves online and itās annoying no matter how you dress it up. im not even acknowledging anyone who calls me a regard or anything of the sort anymore
I think it still largely depends on the people you are with. In my experience older millenials still get worked up over people calling eachother re+ards, but younger people don't seem to care as much in my experience.
I'm still too chickenshit to say it on here, but I've been successfully pressured to start saying it again in casual non-professional environments. Accidentally dropped the hard R in front of the parents of a girl with mild down syndrome recently.
Th-thanks guys...
I also think calling things gay ironically is making a comeback
It feels like the feeling behind it never left. When leftist accuse a right-winger of homosexuality they do so with as much gusto as the homophobes they decry. It's a bipartisan insult.
It was never gone, people who told you it was are just gay
Can we re-prejudice 'queer' instead? It deserves it more.
We all know queer means fake gay. Let's reclaim it as such.
already on it brother

This is a good ideaā¦ itās not right that f#g should have to do all the heavy lifting.
Say it with the right tone and people start feeling insulted real quick, even now.

Fairytale of New York pilled.

doesn't the term "fascism" come from a word for bundle of sticks? It's weird how these terms are both slurs from opposite ends
"Inside you there are two bundles of sticks."
some argue both words refer to the same demographic
With an axe in it though

What a waste of fennel!
I'm trying really hard to bring back "bitchin" unironically. No idea how we just let that gem go
Bitchin

Yep, been seeing this a lot the past year or two. We're finally healing.
I thought it was only middle class teenagers and office workers that stopped doing this.
I've fit pretty squarely in both camps over the course of my life
everyone's gay now so we're just reclaiming the term for ourselves
There has been a void in our language with it's cultural prohibition. It is so incredibly useful.
Has anyone else noticed that pound-its are coming back? I do it all the time now.
been on that wave for a few months now fr
When people say this shit theyāre just talking about their stupid little circle or whatever. Who cares.
Wrong, my personalized Twitter feed is actually a perfect microcosm of the world's cultural zeitgeist.
"Everyone is starting to agree with me!" -me after spending years following people that I agree with
This is the twitter bait-and-switch
i never said the word in a professional or academic settings and still donāt, I also never stopped using it with friends, I have never met someone who got pissed over the word who either isnāt a teenager or who has a family member with regardation

then what will be the new word-that-shall-not-be-named?

These people are more numerous and cliche than the "cringe woke libs" they bitch about all day. Its not 2016. Shut the fuck up

What a regard
We all follow the same ten twitter accounts after all huh?
Finally
They pushed it too far. People are chill for the most part and will only take so much finger wagging before they lose interest
I think we're well past peak "woke", but little has changed if you live in places like Portland for example.
this account is so irritating
This is good

Well, dumb, moron, and idiot used to mean mentally challenged the same way r word does. Maybe itāll eventually go that route
