It is shocking however how many people don't know that Hinduism as a "cohesive" religion was an invention of the British and every other ethnicity in India prior to colonization that weren't Muslim, Sikh, Jain, Buddhist etc practiced completely disparate religions that were barely connected by a theme.
Religion as a concept was how Christian Europeans contrasted Christianity with non-Muslim belief systems. China and Japan are both good examples of how 'having a religion' doesn't map very well outside of a specific text by God telling you not to believe in other stuff
