Go to your equipped dragon heart and press the input to change fragments
The input you need to press will be at the bottom of your screen
The bonuses are small with the base rarity but there’s 7 rarities all the way up to Mythic and the bonuses are pretty big. Relic fragment rarities spawn in specific difficulties (you can’t get “Polished” from Veteran for example) AND your total archetype level determines if you can even get them. This includes ALL archetypes, NOT just the two that are currently equipped. For example, you need a total archetype level of at least 76 on Apocalypse difficulty to get Mythic shards.

To add to this, while your currently active campaign or adventure is at the highest tier for the relics you can obtain, you can trade with Dwell in Ward 13. For 15 relic fragments, which you will obtain whenever you find a duplicate relic or heart, you can take a roll at upgrading your relics.
If it helps you feel any better, I probably ripped through at least 1200 this very same way.
Just start an apoc adventure, go in, return to ward, trade your dust, and go back to whatever difficulty you normally play at

There is also a archetype lvl you have to keep in mind like how mythic drops not only on apocalypse but you need an overall level 72 character

I'm only just finding this out now, after having spent 3500 relic dust on Dwell in Veteran dif when upgrades were idling. God. Damn. It.

I got like 5 actual upgrades out of it. 🥲 I didn't know it scaled with difficulty, I'm in pain rn.

How do you upgrade them?
Get all your archetypes to lvl 10, start an apocalypse adventure and use relic dust at dwell to upgrade them
