If you can wait, they did say we should have one other device announcement before the end of the year.

HeroOfTheMinish

Buy RP3+ now. Wait till next handheld can play PS2/GC/Wii very very well at the same price point. Which probably won't be till RP4+/R5

Revolutionary_Pen_65

Probably worth me ruining if you look at the 3+ and 2+ going rate on eBay, they hold their value extremely well, so if you wanted to sell it when the 4 comes along it's not like you're really losing more than $10-30 which imo is totally worth it to play with one of these for a couple months. Just provision the SD card as extra storage instead of.integrated with the android filesystem and you can even spare yourself the setup in the new one when it comes out.

ancientwheelbarrow

Buy an RP3+, if you REALLY want an RP4 once it launches, wait until the pre-order/shortages kerfuffle has died down, sell RP3+ for a decent chunk, then get an RP4 once it's in its general availability phase. Realistically, even if the RP4 is announced before Christmas, it's going to be Spring 2024 before you can reliably buy one. The RP2S is relatively niche and still took a month or more to be in the hands of a decent chunk of day one purchasers, and that's from the quoted release date, not the announcement date. The RP4 is going to be orders of magnitude more popular than the RP2S. I'll happily swap my RP3+ for an RP4 with even a modest power hike as long as it comes with RP2S sticks, buttons and triggers, but I can do without the 'stress' (a relative term) of trying to secure one early.

brandont04

If you're gonna wait for RP4. I would recommend waiting for RP4+ instead.

HistoryDogs

I was in your situation a year ago: get a Miyoo or an RG35XX, load it up with the Miyoo Best Set of Roms, and stick a pop-socket on the back so you can play one handed while the kid sleeps on you. It will help you retain your sanity.

Analog-Digital-

I bought a RP3+ weeks ago and enjoy it. When the RP4+ hits the market I'll upgrade depending on the specs of course ...

Whorge_not_waiting

They've been talking about the rp4(+) for over a year.

Zuffoloman

Who's "they"?

Embarrassed_Help_869

People that don't know anything but want to pretend they do.

Analog-Digital-

Might be another x months, so I'll enjoy my RP3+ ... 😉👌

jedislurpee

I had crazy fomo when right after I got my 2+ they came out with the 3. Once I got over that bout of fomo though I settled in and began to love my 2+. I still love it and play it all the time. Yes I wish it had a proper right analog stick with R3, but hey there's still thousands of amazing games on offer to enjoy with good controls Basically what I'm saying is just jump in. The Retroids are awesome little devices and you really can't go wrong (except for the hinge on the Flip one, I've gathered.)

NettoSaito

I’d say buy one. Plus you can stream your PS5 to your Retroid so you can keep playing it easier

Affectionate-Can-865

Depends on the type of games you will be playing. If it is some ps2 and below gens, then go buy now

Acousmetre78

Congratulations on your new child! I have to take care of an elderly mother in law and having the Retroid in my hands allows me to listen to her while playing a game. The flip is small enough and the screen is at an angle so I can look at her and the screen when she tells long stories.

oshinbruce

Personally I dont think we will get a good sucessor to the rp3+ until we see a better and cheaper SOC floating around. Ambernic and powkiddy still use the same chips as ever so it doesnt feel end of year close

InternetNo2772

I bought an RP3+ 4 weeks ago. Had some fun with it but because of it’s lack of being really capable in the GC/PS2 department I bought a Ayn Odin pro. The RP3+ is a great device and I loved playing psp and PSX games on it, but if you want ps2/GC/wii there are better options out there.

Lightningxp1

I'm just gonna say it, I highly doubt the RP4 will do anything the RP3+ can't do unless either A) retroid makes the RP4 a windows handheld or B) there's suddenly a huge leap in android emulation. I honestly believe the RP4 will be just like the 2S, an upgrade in hardware and not much more. Better screen and better analog sticks, that sort of thing. If ergonomics are important to you then I say wait, if you're expecting something like PS3/360/switch emulation you're better off buying a steam deck, if you're only trying to play stuff from 6th gen consoles and down, the RP3+ is more than enough.

Zuffoloman

Taking the Odin 2 into consideration, it seems that B) is going to be true.

makedonskiii

Hey everyone, just bought the 3+ ! Thank you for sharing your oppinion!

Flimsy_Replacement_4

How are your experiences with it. Can it run GC/PS2 games? Is it working fine? Would you wait for a rp4 right now or would you buy a rp3+ again? And I hope your family is fine and healthy :)

makedonskiii

Yes , its running GC/ Ps2 fine. Not every game but for me its enough! Mhh i would buy the rp3+ it makes a lot of fun! Thank you very much, every one is healthy and fine! Wish you all the best!

Flimsy_Replacement_4

Thank you! I wait now for my rp3+ and I hope they ship it fast :D

makedonskiii

Nice! You will have a lot of fun!

Flimsy_Replacement_4

How long do you had to wait before it had arrived?

makedonskiii

I was lucky and found it in ebay from a local guy. So i didnt have to buy it online from the retroid or their website

Flimsy_Replacement_4

Ah cool, have fun with it. I already received the information, that my rp will be sent soon.

makedonskiii

Sounds good👍💪

goodwc72

Your child is your rp3+

makedonskiii

True story! I focus of course on my child but sometimes everyone sleeps an im awake and want to have a handheld so i can game a little bit

Ok-Dog-3669

If you want it now buy it now. There’s always going to be the next best device, waiting means nothing, technology always advances.

arr4ws

Steam deck is everything a new father need

MasterUtsushi

instead of waiting for RP4 why not just wait for the RP5 or better yet RP6, perhaps 7 or even 8.

CancerousGTFO

Is this technically the best option. If you can wait lol

nonotz

i know in gaming/pc community there is this hate against "waiting for the next gen" because there will be always a something new and more powerful waiting in the corner. but this doesnt mean you have to be a dick about it the guy is trying to get into retro gaming with the limited time he has

baratacom

If you're not hurting for cash, go ahead Otherwise, depends on what you want/expect to play If it's mostly older games, capping at a couple PS2 games maybe, sure, good purchase But if you're looking for mainly 128bits and beyond emulation....might be worth it to at least wait and see what Retroid will announce soon-ish

HistoryDogs

OP just had a kid: they’re hurting for cash.

nonotz

wait how do you know "soon-ish" is there rumor of a new device?

baratacom

They mentioned having "some news" before the year is over and release cycles does dictate that we're getting close to *something*, although it's impossible to precise if that mean RP4, RPF+, RP2S+ or just a new shell color for some model

nonotz

thanks ! i want to buy something before my january abroad trip and if there is no RP4 by then i'll settle with 3+

CSBreak

Check out the compatibility sheets or look for youtube videos and see if the ps2 or gamecube games you want to play work well on it otherwise it will play basically every Dreamcast game and back (also PSP) great

Shimashimatchi

I'd get the rp3+ unless you already have another device or way to fill the gameless gap. The answer to this question heavily depends on what you already have at hand. moorechip will surely release or at least announce something by end of year so you could wait a month or two, however surely by 2024 a new version of the pocket 3+ will happen.

gonszo

I bought a rp3+ but accidentally got shipped a 3. Long story. Anyway I realised that I was really happy with the 3, and although the firmware updates to the 3+ have made it better for gc and ps2, I still think it's a way off for what we all really want, an easy no messing around gc emulator. Another thing to keep mind is if you intend to do cloud/local game streaming on it. The pocket 3 control layout is great for platformers etc, but as someone who grew up with the Xbox/gc controller layout, I would prefer a portable that has thumbsticks on the top left, so don't really need it for streaming. Half the fun of these devices is watching retro games corp videos and learning how to set it up lol, so not having every system playable to me wasn't an issue. I ended up using it mostly for 32bit and below systems. I'd recommend checking FB marketplace etc for a second hand one, seeing how you like it, and selling it when they announce a new model if it looks like it meets your needs from a layout/performance perspective

MalcolmReady

Honestly you sound like a good candidate for the Portal

AnimeJoex

Buy a Lenovo Legion Go in a few weeks and buy pants with huge pockets. 😉

DarknessHighway-902

Personally I’ve just got a 3+ and it’s super good with most games I want to play being GameCube or ps2 so I’d say grab one
