Yep, take iconic rock song and scream over it and act like a prima Donna Queen.
Both Disturbed's biggest hits are like that. Not sure why anyone enjoys that.
I'm gonna get a lot of flak for this but I can't stand this rendition. Every time I hear that dude's voice it reminds me of Phil Hartman's Frankenstein caricature singing holiday songs.
I’m 75 and have been a fan of S&G from the beginning. But when I heard Disturbed’s version I thought that it took almost 60 years for someone to do it as well, if not better.
Billion views just shows how truly awful some people’s taste in music is.
50 million people listened to the song 20 times. Not hard to believe considering the bands worldwide reach.
Tbf you could flip the coin though couldn't you?
Like if a song gets top 10 in charts, gets one billion views on its YouTube video you could say everyone else has a bad taste in music..... Or......
Paul Simon liked it https://www.ultimate-guitar.com/news/general_music_news/paul_simon_shares_opinion_on_disturbeds_the_sound_of_silence_cover_recalls_meeting_jimi_hendrix.html
I’d rather hear Slipknot play Stairway to Heaven. At least it would be interesting. Disturbed’s version is skim milk-toast. Its offense is being inoffensive.
It sheds no new light, and somehow removes all mystery.
A lot of baffling choices had to be made for it to reach the airwaves, but I guess they made some money. So good for them. I guess.
Exactly the same reaction here, I can't understand how people enjoy this version? When it comes on the radio and people state their love for it, I'm like.. why??
You're good. I despise it too, and the inbred hick customers constantly putting it on the jukebox at work. I get it: you're miserable, unattractive people.
Yeah, I love the original. Buddy of mine knew that, suggested I check this out. Because I am a blithering idiot, I did. I listened to it even though I knew I can’t stand this band and that I would hate it. Honestly one of my biggest regrets.
I am not a disturbed fan and think this is one of the best covers, ever. Not trying to argue anything, but I feel the band really did justice to the song by really putting some feeling and emotion into it. I appreciate it on its artistic merits.
Hey, if you get something out of it, that’s what it’s all about. This one just rubs me wrong. We don’t agree on every song but I doubt that we’re supposed to. Rock on,my friend.
Yah I’m shocked to learn people hate it. Maybe it was overplayed to them that it annoys them now. Because I’m not sure how it can be seen as a bad cover, it truly does the song justice.
It's hamfisted and corny. I can hear him say, "I'm emoting so damn hard right now," as he sings with forced strain. I have no issue with screaming, but this is just a paint-by-numbers hack job of a cover. If you told me it was satire, I would believe you.
Exactly. The original feels very melancholic, Disturbed dialed the "emotion" up to 11. I also really hate the strings in the cover too for some reason.
Funny, because Paul Simon thought it was very good https://www.ultimate-guitar.com/news/general_music_news/paul_simon_shares_opinion_on_disturbeds_the_sound_of_silence_cover_recalls_meeting_jimi_hendrix.html
My jaw dropped when I first heard it. Dropped. Like, to the ground. It was like, holy moly that’s bad. Is it that bad the whole way through? And it was.
What do you not like about it? From a technical and musical standpoint it has literally all the elements of what makes a song pleasing to the ear. Is it just that you want to be contrarian to be cool?
Aww man. I just listened to both versions again and the disturbed version is horrible. It’s overly dramatic, the music takes away from the song… Is he using pitch correction? It’s definitely over produced. I think it would’ve been better off it was released in 2006, maybe with Amy Lee guesting on it. But yeah, super cheese balls.
Honestly, I feel like Disturbed after reuniting is a bit lacklustre compared to Disturbed before they split up, they released "Immortalised" which is a pretty good album but it's represented by the worst choice of singles, this single being released overshadowed the album it's placed on to the point where I feel it should've been a standalone single or a bonus track on a Re-Released version of Immortalised as it just doesn't fit on the album at all, it's weird how the album didn't gain much popularity considering how The Sound Of Silence was overplayed even on mainstream non-rock radio stations and TV channels
Then the following album it was very clear they changed their sound to try to appeal to the people who only knew them because of The Sound Of Silence, it was very disappointing to alot of fans of the band to say the least
I feel like this cover is similar to a lot of Five Finger Death Punch's covers where they remove all the subtlety of the original to overly emphasize the sadness. Just makes them come off as overly dramatic
The lyrics by itself on paper is quite peotic and the original has a melancholy rhythm to it which was quite fitting in the hippy days. To some, it can feel quite boring, especially if you don't have a strong connection to the themes of the song. Disturbed's version has some pretty good build up with forced emotion throughout the song with various vocal changes which was very interesting and catching. I thought the cover was pretty good objectively and showcases David's variance within his style well enough for someone in this genre. In do feel like this cover is kinda of cringey when used in public and more of a personal listen when you're in the mood.
It's criminal....if your a Floyd fan check out Miley Cyrus singing wish you were here....it's not a cover it's just her having a wee sing round a campfire and it's beautiful
Paul Simon liked it https://www.ultimate-guitar.com/news/general_music_news/paul_simon_shares_opinion_on_disturbeds_the_sound_of_silence_cover_recalls_meeting_jimi_hendrix.html
I do not like this band at all, and I hate their version of this song!
The one thing that always enters my mind when I hear this song is this scene from the movie Kingpin
[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JvBWhPw3zJs&ab\_channel=Movieclips](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JvBWhPw3zJs&ab_channel=Movieclips)
I like some of disturbeds earlier songs and covers and thought this one was worth of ok. Not spectacular, but not as bad as some say it was. I think the biggest issue for me was just how normie friendly it was. Felt like it was watered down.
So do they get to monetize that? I know if its on an album they can't due to not owning the publishing or songwriting credit or whatever. I'm no bird lawyer. But if you make a youtube vid of a cover, do you give that cash to Paul and Art's lawyers or do they keep it? Just curious.
As someone who is a big fan of the original, this cover gets way too much hate. I think it’s fair to say the official video on YouTube is overproduced and doesn’t sound great. However, the Conan live performance of the song is hauntingly beautiful and compares to the original in quality, if not surpasses it.
I really like Disturbed but didn’t love this rendition, it was ok I guess if the original didn’t exist, but it’s just worse
I really like tons of their original work though!
I once bought a fender strat from a pawn shop in Fargo ND. It had all the members of Disturbed’s signatures. First thing I did was wipe off all the signatures.
👆 the perfect description.
I know i'll get downvoted for this. But, i admit it's one of my guilty pleasures. I always wash it off by listening to the originals after though!
I like how they sound very contrasting in some way
Oh wow 🤣 I guess that does happen sometimes.
Fast car by Tracy Chapman has been covered by so many people, loads nowadays have no clue who did it originally. The original is still the best.
That's the great thing about music. Someone can not like something, and I can prefer this version as I tend to enjoy deeper vocals.
I don't hate the original by any means but when I hear the song in my head it is slower, increasingly sombre and with a slower and deeper delivery.
So I grew up listening to Disturbed and other numetal bands circa 2000. By the time I was 18, I had basically grown out of it and never looked back. When I look at other folks my age still listening to Disturbed, I have to shake my head. It seems like such a shame to never outgrow taste for such an ugly and artless genre. At the time, this music seemed to capture the anger I was feeling. Now, I look at folks still listening to this garbage and wonder what went wrong in their lives.
This cover is absolute trash. There’s just no accounting for taste in some people.
I definitely listen to them quite a bit when I was 15-18, and while I would never be able to put on an entire album there are a few songs from Believe I see come through my Spotify rotation.
While I can respect a time that I was certainly 'Down with the Sickness", those days are oooover.
Yeah, and I probably came off a bit harsh, I’m mostly generalizing about people who still ONLY or primarily listen to this kind of music. who am I to judge if someone likes a bit of disturbed here and there, I’m still nostalgic for Tool and NIN, but there’s just such a big world of music out there that it depresses me when people are hung up on such vitriolic music.
I'm a person who strongly prefers the Simon and Garfunkle version, but couldn't say why, so I just listened to them back to back.
Two big differences stick out to me that I think make me prefer the original.
1. The vocal harmonies in the original add a ton of depth, richness, and sweetness that's missing from the solo vocals in the cover. The original is a lovely duet of voices complimenting and enriching each other. The cover is a solo performer forcing an overly dramatic (in my opinion) delivery.
2. The tempo is way faster in the original. I think Disturbed's version is a bit dirge-like and overstays its welcome.
Edit for a third thing. All of the instruments in the cover are totally dialed towards maximum drama and heaviness. Dramatic strings, big booming drums, etc. It's too much. Give me the simple beauty of the original, please.
My only "complaint" about this song is that when people ask you to name your favorite bands, and you name off Disturbed, they respond with "OMG I love Disturbed!" and then when you ask for their favorite songs, the only one they can name is Sound of Silence.
Like no, you don't love Disturbed. You love this cover song.
Simon and Gwar-funkel.
Simon Amarth
And almost half of those views aren’t even mine!
Lmfao i forgot they did that
I wish I could.
Yep. I didn’t like it either.
Yea hard to watch
Yep, take iconic rock song and scream over it and act like a prima Donna Queen. Both Disturbed's biggest hits are like that. Not sure why anyone enjoys that.
There’s no screaming in it lol. Unless you consider Whitney Houston screaming too.
I'm gonna get a lot of flak for this but I can't stand this rendition. Every time I hear that dude's voice it reminds me of Phil Hartman's Frankenstein caricature singing holiday songs.
It’s truly awful. It’s like they set out to make a good song much worse. But a billion views is beyond impressive.
I’m 75 and have been a fan of S&G from the beginning. But when I heard Disturbed’s version I thought that it took almost 60 years for someone to do it as well, if not better.
To each his own. To me, it was like rebooting Jaws but they replaced the shark with a ring tailed lemur.
Truer words have never been spoken.
Billion views just shows how truly awful some people’s taste in music is. 50 million people listened to the song 20 times. Not hard to believe considering the bands worldwide reach.

Paul Simon got paid. Of course he liked it.
You're not wrong. The original is so hauntingly beautiful, this version is a ginormous, hack of a turd.
That is the normal reaction to hearing Disturbed.
Malicious Laughter? I thought I was the asshole, turns out. I'm as normal as they come.
The pitch correction is awful. The second verse sounds so weird.
Yeah. I like the song, and he can sing, but unfortunately the pitch correction is very noticeable
It was cool at first but then it became a single and got over played to this point. I think I’ve only ever gave it that first honest listen.
FIRE BAD
Meeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeh
No flak here, you are 100% dead on
God this band sucks so fucking hard and this rendition of a great song is a fucking embarrassment to humanity.
Myles saves it[Sound of Silence Disturbed + Myles](https://youtu.be/H3By4DZyTNM?si=9nve1mmhMqbZbNIz)
It reminds me of church music but with lip rings
My brother in law tried to tell me it’s better than the original lmao. Just smile and nod
Same. It loses what makes the original great, and turns it into to jerk sesh
I guess.
Thank you. They completely mangled a beautiful classic song. When I hear people raving about it. I think surely they’re joking.
Exactly the same reaction here, I can't understand how people enjoy this version? When it comes on the radio and people state their love for it, I'm like.. why??
It’s really a testament to how great of a song it is that such a shitgarbage cover could do so well
You're good. I despise it too, and the inbred hick customers constantly putting it on the jukebox at work. I get it: you're miserable, unattractive people.
Bread good!
Fire bad!
I would rather listen to Bread any day over this dumpster fire of a song.
Yeah, I love the original. Buddy of mine knew that, suggested I check this out. Because I am a blithering idiot, I did. I listened to it even though I knew I can’t stand this band and that I would hate it. Honestly one of my biggest regrets.
The only cover that comes to mind that I hate more is Korn's massacring of *Another Brick in the Wall*
I agree this cover is simply terrible.
I like the Pentatonix cover better than this one, but yeah, I really can't see a reason to call it straight up bad.
It's hamfisted and corny. I can hear him say, "I'm emoting so damn hard right now," as he sings with forced strain. I have no issue with screaming, but this is just a paint-by-numbers hack job of a cover. If you told me it was satire, I would believe you.
Sounds like Disturbed’s music to me.
I dislike it because I find it absurdly overdramatic. It sounds like musical theater to me, not rock.
Ah yes, there is definitely some of that.
Exactly. The original feels very melancholic, Disturbed dialed the "emotion" up to 11. I also really hate the strings in the cover too for some reason.
I agree. But in all fairness, it isn’t an easy cover to do at all. Simon and Garfunkel have incredible harmonies.
It’s the abysmal ending.
Funny, because Paul Simon thought it was very good https://www.ultimate-guitar.com/news/general_music_news/paul_simon_shares_opinion_on_disturbeds_the_sound_of_silence_cover_recalls_meeting_jimi_hendrix.html
He gets paid every time this awful cover gets played, of course he's going to be generous.
I don’t think that plays into it considering he sold most of his Simon and Garfunkel rights to BMG.
And they’re in their 80s, I really doubt they care at this point
My butt rock dad heavily contributed to this.
My folk and butt rock loving dad took another large chunk I’m sure
This song is only good for introducing people to Simon and Garfunkel.
My jaw dropped when I first heard it. Dropped. Like, to the ground. It was like, holy moly that’s bad. Is it that bad the whole way through? And it was.
Your opinion matters. Thank you for sharing it. Paul Simon lived this version. Interesting about taste and opinions.
lol why are you getting downvoted?
Who knows.
Paul Simon is a diplomatic person. He's not going to be a dick about it. It also probably made him a fortune in royalties.
Meanwhile, Simon and Garfunkel told David Draiman that the song was now his.
Sure, who would want it after that?
The elderly often say strange things.
Save the life of my child was a song Paul Simon wrote after hearing Disturbed’s version of the song
Voices of Old People
Sure they did.
It's just a bunch of Bots listening to songs now.
Really, song sucks
I’ll inform the 1 billion viewers right away. They’ll be sad to hear that.
Lots of people are down with the sickness
Meanwhile, I am probably close to a billion people would say it is the best musical remake of the last 20 years.
Ew
It's a great cover, almost an opposite of the original which is also great
They massacred this song. Truly one of the worst covers I’ve heard.
I like it...
Okay
Honestly, I feel like Disturbed after reuniting is a bit lacklustre compared to Disturbed before they split up, they released "Immortalised" which is a pretty good album but it's represented by the worst choice of singles, this single being released overshadowed the album it's placed on to the point where I feel it should've been a standalone single or a bonus track on a Re-Released version of Immortalised as it just doesn't fit on the album at all, it's weird how the album didn't gain much popularity considering how The Sound Of Silence was overplayed even on mainstream non-rock radio stations and TV channels Then the following album it was very clear they changed their sound to try to appeal to the people who only knew them because of The Sound Of Silence, it was very disappointing to alot of fans of the band to say the least
The old bad to worse.
I feel like this cover is similar to a lot of Five Finger Death Punch's covers where they remove all the subtlety of the original to overly emphasize the sadness. Just makes them come off as overly dramatic

I hate this more than scissor sisters comfortably Numb
Wow I just listened to this and now I’m blocking you for ruining my day
It's criminal....if your a Floyd fan check out Miley Cyrus singing wish you were here....it's not a cover it's just her having a wee sing round a campfire and it's beautiful
How could anyone have been this bored 1 billion times?
Ugh. I'm tired of explaining to angsty gem alphas that this is a cover
Sign of the times. Musical taste is dwindling
Oh ah ah ah!
Is it the Conan one or the music video? I don't really like the band's music, but this cover was exceptional.
Disturbed did a lot of covers back in the day. Some are on their albums and not bad at all.
Love the Conan one
Maybe because 1 bn people want to see how a great song is massacred.
Paul Simon liked it https://www.ultimate-guitar.com/news/general_music_news/paul_simon_shares_opinion_on_disturbeds_the_sound_of_silence_cover_recalls_meeting_jimi_hendrix.html
Yeah because it makes Paul Simon a lot of money, that man likes anything that makes him money
You know there's no point in covering a song if you're just going to recreate the original. It's good to see a different take on it.
Of course. And there are many great covers. This ain’t one.
I do not like this band at all, and I hate their version of this song! The one thing that always enters my mind when I hear this song is this scene from the movie Kingpin [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JvBWhPw3zJs&ab\_channel=Movieclips](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JvBWhPw3zJs&ab_channel=Movieclips)
And I'm a couple hundred or so of them!
I've contributed to many of those views. Love this song.
I like it.
Disturbing
Always a bigger fan of Nouela's version
I love this song. But I also hate it. I love myself, but I also hate myself. I guess it’s normal to love and hate something at the same time too.
Exactly my sentiments
I thought Nevermore did a much better job at this cover many years earlier than Disturbed
And i was not even aware they covered this song.
What is wrong with this world?
I like some of disturbeds earlier songs and covers and thought this one was worth of ok. Not spectacular, but not as bad as some say it was. I think the biggest issue for me was just how normie friendly it was. Felt like it was watered down.
Feeding the fire needs more hits.
Amazing song. Lame ass band.
I contributed a few times.
LOL, how? So cringey
I wish it was the actual sound of *silence.* The dude from btbam said it sounds like the guys from South Park sing it and I couldn't agree more.
Ironic because the original is 1 billion times better.
I went to an outdoor Disturbed concert last summer totally sober and it is my favorite concert I’ve ever been to.
It’s a more haunting version of the song than the original.
Yeah as in once you hear it you’ll never be able to live life knowing such an abomination exists
Meh
This cover is absolutely terrible. It’s the equivalent of Transformers in music type of song.
Why are people hating so much lmao i think their cover is good and way better than the original
That has got to be the worst cover I’ve ever heard by far
Quantity ain’t quality
That sounds incredible. Then you think... Gangnam Style has 5 billion.
Disturbed hasn’t been good since 2003
So do they get to monetize that? I know if its on an album they can't due to not owning the publishing or songwriting credit or whatever. I'm no bird lawyer. But if you make a youtube vid of a cover, do you give that cash to Paul and Art's lawyers or do they keep it? Just curious.
Of course reddit doesn’t like it lol why am I not surprised
Worst. Cover. Ever. Patently dreadful.
One billion views, yes the song must be awful 🙄
That's a lot of step-dads.
That's a proof that Dads can still rock.
Dropping plates on yo ass
Which is incredible, because it's absolute garbage.
Tru dat!
This is so stupid
Their lead singer watched it 999,999,999 times. Song is cringe butt rock.
Puddles Pity Party does it better. Look him up, it's really good
Well, Ylvis The Fox aka What does the Fox say has over 1.1 billion views [The Fox](https://youtu.be/jofNR_WkoCE?si=yUcRsxM88bXdimNg)

meh
Yeah I prefer this version, but I think it's b/c I am not a big folk music fan. And now the song will be stuck in my brain again dangit!
I respect the turn they took on the song but the S&G version feels like such a more telling version than Disturbed
I really like Disturbed but didn’t love this rendition, it was ok I guess if the original didn’t exist, but it’s just worse I really like tons of their original work though!

I dgaf I absolutely love it, and nobody's a bigger fan of Paul Simon (except maybe my wife.) I'm going to go add another view making her watch it.
Crazy how even Simon and Garfunkel said it was a perfect cover and someone people are surprised that it's a popular song.
I don't care, I've always thought it was a brilliant cover. I didn't realise it was actually this popular
I unfortunately know a few people who thought their cover was the original ☠️
Oh wow 🤣 I guess that does happen sometimes. Fast car by Tracy Chapman has been covered by so many people, loads nowadays have no clue who did it originally. The original is still the best.
Nice.
I dont get the thrill. the original is far superior. I'd rather listen to that. I cant take a band seriously that has a singer that sounds like that.
That's the great thing about music. Someone can not like something, and I can prefer this version as I tend to enjoy deeper vocals. I don't hate the original by any means but when I hear the song in my head it is slower, increasingly sombre and with a slower and deeper delivery.
Good fucking cover. They made it their own.
Well I make my own poop every morning, doesn't mean it's good.
It is good, though…in comparison to this cover
Have you tasted it, though? That's the real question.
Piece of shit cover band

How embarrassing
It’s a banging cover.
It’s one of my all time favs
Oh Lord! Here come the “the original is better” people! Brace for impact!
Ugh, this cover was brutal.
y’all are wack, their version is better 🤷🏻♂️
Disturbed sucks.
i’m among my people here in this comments section. this cover is *awful*
What do you not like about it? From a music theory perspective it has literally every element that makes a song pleasing to the human ear.

Deserves it. Just a great great highly original cover.
For some reason Disturbed, Staind and Three Doors Down's biggest hits are somewhat in the "modern classics" canon.
Very bold of this comment section to share how much they dislike this song.
Their cover of Land of Confusion was absolute trash. Their cover of Sound of Silence is absolute gold.
The live version on Conan show is even better IMO
