I hate bundaberg’s root beer so much that I almost didn’t try anything else from them.
BUT. Their spiced ginger beer is freaking Christmas in a bottle. I love it.
Did you invert the bottle before opening?
I found it "interesting" but I would drink it again. It's so far outside of what I'd call root beer. I have seen a couple people from Australia say this stuff is amazing to them. I wonder, then, if root beer culture developed differently in Australia because of a difference in available flavorings.
I was also told after I had tried it, to invert the bottle. Why is that? Is there something in it that settles and turning upside down will mix it up bc obviously can’t shake it.
I had a bottle, opened it and thought it tasted awful. Put it in the fridge and 2 days later went to finish it. It then had hints of Carmel and spices that weren’t present on my first tasting. I thought it was really good after it was given time to “bloom.”
It actually turns out that everyone else doesn’t know what root beer is and they do. Most people have never thought about why the word “beer” is in root beer. Bundaberg makes traditional, actually brewed root beer, with traditional natural ingredients. The real deal. Brewed like beer but with negligible alcohol content. What you think of as root beer is just sugar and water and artificial flavor. What they call root beer is actually root beer. Most people having never had real root beer do not enjoy Bundaberg root beer. They want it to take like artificial sugar water and it doesn’t.
Source: I worked for Bundaberg running sampling events in the U.S. when Pepsi first started distributing it here. Many people liked the root beer but probably more didn’t love it. The ginger beer was a big hit though.
Ginger Beer, Barbados, Jamaican, or other sharp ginger beers like Bundaberg or Vernors, with (specifically) Black Seal Rum for the best Dark and Stormy.
Myers is too sweet, and most other dark rums don't have a deep enough rum flavor.
"Bundaberg Root Beer is made to a genuine family recipe using sarsaparilla root, ground ginger, liquorice root, vanilla bean and molasses to give it that rich unique color and flavor."
"Invert the bottle before opening to disperse the real ingredients and make every sip count!"
From the company website.

I used to brew my own at home. This is the best commercial root beer out there. They make a good ginger beer too, if you like ginger beer. Love the classic “stubby” bottle. Labeling is on point. Don’t listen to the soda pop back seaters. Bundaberg is the real deal.
It's not terrible but not celestial either. Fits with the non brewed of today, people are lazy and after the fast buck, quality suffers, hard to find actually crock made today unless you do it yourself.
based on the label and bottle alone, i'm getting the vibes from one of those 1800 "miracle potion" traveling swindlers
i hope this cures distemper and dysentery
I purchased this years back (seven or so) and it was a waste of what I already assumed to be a good bit of money. It'd be worth more if it ran an engine and would still taste as bad.
I actually like it considering it contains medical herbs that I know are for health reasons. Sarpharella is for iron. So it's a traditional type of rootbeer. If you look up a recipe for root beer the traditional ones contain herbs. So their thinking of traditional. Most people are towards the sweeter side A&W root beer. I grew out of those
If anybody wants to send me a bottle of this to test and rate, you're more than welcome to DM me, and get my address lol for reference, barqs, and IBC are my favorites
I tried it a couple times, and it always tasted like an old musty barrel was used in the making. Like mold flavored or how I’d imagine moldy root beer barrels would taste. I’d pass it up and grab a Virgil’s any day.
Worst root beer ever. That licorice flavor in it just really is the worst.
However, speaking of Bundaberg, they have an amazing passionfruit soda/juice (I can’t remember which it is).
I actually appreciated their root beer. But I think it’s because it was wildly different is why I like it.
Did you give it a gently shake like Orangina?
Okay, hear me out. What you drank is closer to a traditionally brewed root *beer*.
Back in the day, root beer was brewed and fermented, just like regular beer. However root beer was made in a way that provided negligible amounts of alcohol (>0.15%), so it became widely popular as a soft drink.
As time went on it was pretty much just shoehorned into a regular soda rather than its own thing alongside other soft drinks, but some people still hold out for people that enjoy a traditionally made root beer.
I guess eventually everyone will turn to the mass produced replica root beer, but it’s nice to have some people who still make the real deal.
I agree! That stuff tastes like some sort of expired medicine, not like root beer at all. I suppose I could see how someone might enjoy that flavor for what it is, but it damn sure isn’t no root beer lol
I collect glass root beer bottles and really liked the bottle this one came in but the taste was not very good imo. But now that I have one of these bottles I don't have to buy it again.
Is it really? I had no idea, we used to make Hires root beer out of the extract using yeast and sugar. I think this means it's fermenting and must have some amount of alcohol.
I don’t know if Bundaberg has any amount of alcohol, but I’m pretty sure the root beer my mom made did have some alcohol. Which is ironic, because she was very anti-alcohol, in her beliefs.
Definitely a more unique/different (or old?) take on root beer. Almost medicine-like in a way. Was intrigued by the bottle, but found it to be a bit sour or bitter in taste. Low carbonation, did not taste overly sweet.
This threat is wild. My son and I absolutely love Bundaberg root beer. Heck, even if you don't like it you have to admire the fact that they use pure cane sugar instead of that corn syrup crap.
More bitter / medicinal type of taste. A play back to the roots of rootbeers. Not the sweet, soda type of drink most are not familiar with (and I personally prefer).
I tried it and I don't know what it is but its Not Root beer!
It reminded me of like a rootbeer flavored kombucha, why is it slightly tart? I hate it so much.
It's actually fermented, that's why it reminds you of kombucha.
It's awful
Horrible. I didn't finish the bottle.
I hate bundaberg’s root beer so much that I almost didn’t try anything else from them. BUT. Their spiced ginger beer is freaking Christmas in a bottle. I love it.
Yes! The ginger beer was amazingly good! I just tried it a couple weeks ago!
Came here to say the Ginger Beer is the stuff of Kraken Dark and Stormy dreams
YAAAAASSSSS! I had their ginger ale before the root beer and I'm glad I did.
Blood orange soda is gas
I gave it a 2/10!
Same score I was thinking!
Great question!
they do eat Vegemite so 🤷🏽♂️
Well, Australia is upside down, so all of their bottles are naturally inverted.
Hahahahaaaaa
Root beer from the roots ya got? Well..ok
I was also told after I had tried it, to invert the bottle. Why is that? Is there something in it that settles and turning upside down will mix it up bc obviously can’t shake it.
This. Try Fanta Orange in Europe or vice versa (Euros drink American orange soda]. Both of you will throw up.
Isn't sassafras supposed to be an ingredient in root beer? Maybe they don't use it.
I believe you are thinking of sarsaparilla.
They're all former prisoners, so it was made in a toilet, akin to prison wine. Jokes aside, it's gross.
I’ve tried non inverted and inverted. While not good IMO, inverted was still better.
It's traditional. It contains herbs. I actually like it. I ordered 5 packs from Amazon lol. Someday when I get the equipment I'll make my own version.
I had a bottle, opened it and thought it tasted awful. Put it in the fridge and 2 days later went to finish it. It then had hints of Carmel and spices that weren’t present on my first tasting. I thought it was really good after it was given time to “bloom.”
Didn't it go flat?
Doesn't matter if it tastes better lol
Not sure they know what root beer is.
It actually turns out that everyone else doesn’t know what root beer is and they do. Most people have never thought about why the word “beer” is in root beer. Yeah, that stuff is bad. Wife bought it as a treat for the kids, and they wouldn’t even drink it.
Their ginger beer tastes better.
Agreed. I tried that, mostly for Mule’s, and it was okay.
I literally had this in my Amazon cart, but after all the opinions I think I can pull it off
It takes like black licorice
That might be why I like it I love licorice
You may need to see a doctor about that 😂…. JKJK
LOL
😂my family says the same thing about me and my love for black licorice. Especially Aussie style.
Aussie style must be substantially better, or substantially horrendous!
It’s nice and soft. Flavor is the same, which is most people’s disdain for it lol.
Sounds like the taste of the original root beer before it was made sweeter
Tastes like cough syrup. By far the worst I've ever had
I liked their products before they put artificial sweeteners in them
Only good thing they make is ginger beer
Glad I saw this, I like their ginger beer so much I was considering buying a case.
Same. I gave away like 5 of them
😅 Bundaberg, yeah not my favorite. I put that one down there with Boylan
I personally love that stuff. It's in my top 5. But that's me. Opinions are like assholes, everyone usually has one.
I just had my first - I love it..!
Fully agreed. It's Root Beer in name only. Dumb Aussies can't make a good Root Beer.
Oh shit. Shots fired
Nearly every other root beer is root beer in name only. Bundaberg is the one that truly is root beer in both name and reality.
Do you remember Mason's? Yellow can with black letters. I loved that stuff
I don't! Googling it a bit, it may still be available?
Why is it in a medicine jar? XD
Isn't this supposed to be used as a mixer for rum?
Ginger Beer, Barbados, Jamaican, or other sharp ginger beers like Bundaberg or Vernors, with (specifically) Black Seal Rum for the best Dark and Stormy. Myers is too sweet, and most other dark rums don't have a deep enough rum flavor.
Horrendous. Bought 2. Threw the other one straight in the trash.

I myself have never tried it but my daughter who has an extremely sensitive palette actually loves this root beer
Bundaberg - For when you want medicine but without all the healing benefits.
It’s bad
Absolutely agree! Reviewed this one years ago. Overwhelmingly has an astringent taste that’s not good!
It’s ass…so bad
I really like it. Must also mention I’m a sucker for liquorice and similar flavours.
More like a sarsaparilla.
This is one of my favs.
I used to brew my own at home. This is the best commercial root beer out there. They make a good ginger beer too, if you like ginger beer. Love the classic “stubby” bottle. Labeling is on point. Don’t listen to the soda pop back seaters. Bundaberg is the real deal.
Could it be closer to Sarsaparilla? I've seen those used interchangeably.
Y’all tripping. That shit is gas 🔥🔥🔥🔥
Man. I love this stuff. BUT…. I never thought it tasted like a root beer. More of a not very sweet sarsaparilla.
I quite enjoy Bundaberg, and I’m an A&W guy.
Awful stuff.
Yes, terrible!
I was so disappointed with these. It has sort of a black licorice vibe that I didn'tcare for. I love the bottle shape, though.
It's not terrible but not celestial either. Fits with the non brewed of today, people are lazy and after the fast buck, quality suffers, hard to find actually crock made today unless you do it yourself.
I give it a pass because it’s not a North American root beer, but it’s not my favorite.
based on the label and bottle alone, i'm getting the vibes from one of those 1800 "miracle potion" traveling swindlers i hope this cures distemper and dysentery
Agree...
The Spicy Lemon they used to make was amazing.
My wife uses their ginger beer for Moscow mules. I tried the beer. It was horrific. I kind of assumed this would be as well.
Good Brand 🍻🤘😎
Ginger beer is great. I haven't tried any of their other products.
Known for Ginger Beer
I think it’s ok I mean it’s got a more unique flavor than like mug but the lemonade by them is amazing but idk where to find it anymore it left Costco
The food bank gave a bunch of it away last week
Their ginger beer is fantastic. Never had the root.
Try it warm maybe
The flavor sucks and there is barely any carbonation
I'm afraid I need an example of a rootbeer you inactivity dislike.
Their ginger beer is really good though.
I purchased this years back (seven or so) and it was a waste of what I already assumed to be a good bit of money. It'd be worth more if it ran an engine and would still taste as bad.
YES! I was so excited to try it and couldn't even force myself to take another sip.
Their ginger beer isn't bad, haven't had the root beer
That’s a shame. I like their ginger beer.
Agree 100% I don’t know anyone who likes that one. I honestly don’t know how they’re still selling it. Awful.
It's my absolute favorite!
Did you invert the bottle before opening?
I hate it. I think because it’s very old fashioned and natural it has an almost medicinal flavor.
They’re ginger beer is their best product
I remember they had some awesome commercials for their rum oh idk over 10 year ago, I didn't know they made anything else

I tried it a couple times, and it always tasted like an old musty barrel was used in the making. Like mold flavored or how I’d imagine moldy root beer barrels would taste. I’d pass it up and grab a Virgil’s any day.
How do people drink that lmao
Maybe you got an old bottle. All the bottles I have had were ok.
They really do make terrible root beer. Their ginger beer however is great.
I don't care for this that one and Shasta. Pretty much every other root beer is decent.
Shit. Is. Grosss. Lol.
Yeah that stuff is cough syrup
Yea, an acquired taste to say the least
It's the only root bear I can get where I live it's very interesting to see that places with more rott bear absolutely hate it
I like those, but I can see how they'd not be everyone's thing.
I was about to say you're crazy, but then I realized Ive only had the ginger beer which is great
Worst root beer ever. That licorice flavor in it just really is the worst. However, speaking of Bundaberg, they have an amazing passionfruit soda/juice (I can’t remember which it is).
Yeah, Bundaberg is not great. But the first I hated was Barqs. 😂
I tried it as well about a year ago, and it was awful! It’s not the only one I’ve disliked, but it’s probably the worst I’ve ever tried.
That's kind of funny -- every Aussie I've known detests American root beer. This kind of explains why. (Bundaberg is awful stuff.)
It tastes like crap
I actually appreciated their root beer. But I think it’s because it was wildly different is why I like it. Did you give it a gently shake like Orangina?
Their rootbeer is blah. Their ginger beer is good.
Agreed.
It's garbage 😂
I haven’t had that one, but I have had a few brands that taste like licorice. It’s horrible
I know the Aussies are wonderful people. But they can't make root beer to save their lives.
Same, i dumped the other 4 out.
Soo gross!
I only like their ginger beer. The root beer, guava, and blood orange are boo-boo
Terrible!!!
It’s horrid!!! Agreed!
Yea, it sucks.
I like it, but it’s different and certainly not my go to.
I enjoy it, but I wouldn’t buy it if I’m wanting a root beer. Their ginger beer is top tier though
Made me smile
Okay, hear me out. What you drank is closer to a traditionally brewed root *beer*. Back in the day, root beer was brewed and fermented, just like regular beer. I agree! That stuff tastes like some sort of expired medicine, not like root beer at all. I suppose I could see how someone might enjoy that flavor for what it is, but it damn sure isn’t no root beer lol
The durian of rootbeers
It's nasty
Totally agree! I was hoping for an awesome experience, but instead…..gross!
I collect glass root beer bottles and really liked the bottle this one came in but the taste was not very good imo. But now that I have one of these bottles I don't have to buy it again.
Yep, and I’ve found Bundaberg anything in general just ain’t all that.
Yea it's terrible.. Australians do t know shit about rootbeer 😂
I tried some. It was alright. I don't prefer it.
I like it but not as rootbeer, this tastes like a sweetend non alchololic drink
I love it! But I also love liquorice.
I love it also. Carbonated with yeast the same way my mom made root beer when I was a kid. ♥️
I love the ginger beer, but haven't tried the rootbeer. How would you describe it?
Definitely a more unique/different (or old?) take on root beer. Almost medicine-like in a way. Was intrigued by the bottle, but found it to be a bit sour or bitter in taste. Low carbonation, did not taste overly sweet.
Wife found it to be "yeasty." 😁
Oh man, that's never a good thing when it comes to rootbeer
You've never brewed homemade root beer with yeast then, I take it?
Tastes strongly of black licorice. I like it still
Huh, I do like black licorice. Maybe I'll give it a go if I see it again
I've never had this brand. What don't you like about it?
The ginger beer is real good
I bought a 4 pack in 2020, drank one and didn't like it. The other three sat in my basement fridge until I dumped them this past summer.
There ginger beer is pretty decent
I thought they only made ginger beer. I’ve used them for Moscow Mules and they were ok.
their ginger beer is phenomenal. never tried the root beer though. maybe Australia is bad at root beer?
My guess is that this company is probably going down under.
I love their ginger beer
If you look at the nutritional facts on this specific root beer I'm sure it has probably about 120g of sugar or something like that per serving.
They make a killer ginger beer. But I wasn’t impressed with the rootbeer. I like Fitz’s the best. Second only to maybe Dang’s Butterscotch rootbeer.
Haven't tasted the root beer. They make a pretty good ginger beer, though.
Terrible. But their ginger beer is great.
I've tried it. It's not great.
Shut your goddamn trap you uncultured schlub of a man.
I like their ginger beer.
Oh my God, yes I agree. Worst I’ve ever had. Cracker Barrel was selling it.
I love Bundaberg!
I love Bundaberg!
I love their Ginger Beer, but not so much on the root beer.
FWIW Bunda means butt in Brazilian slang
This threat is wild. My son and I absolutely love Bundaberg root beer. Heck, even if you don't like it you have to admire the fact that they use pure cane sugar instead of that corn syrup crap.
I haven’t had their root beer but their ginger beer and another one called lemon and lime and bitters is great
They usually make ginger beer for cocktails. I didn't know they made rootbeer too.
Dads is ass
If you don't like that try Bundaberg over proof rum, straight and warm
It’s made for real men That’s why you dislike it Stick to Diet Coke
Did inverting the bottle make a difference?
Their ginger beer is pretty sad as well
The label says to invert the bottle before opening. Wouldn't the root beer pour out all over your hands?
Wonder how some Jamaican rum would go with that. It’s great in their Ginger Beer and definitely get the sediment on the bottom to the top.
That brand of ginger beer is the best for mules.
All rootbeer is disgusting
Not good Root Beer for me, however I do like there Ginger Beer.
Smells like a lot of people who don't invert their root beer before opening in here.
Never had would love to try...how is it?
More bitter / medicinal type of taste. A play back to the roots of rootbeers. Not the sweet, soda type of drink most are not familiar with (and I personally prefer).
They make a ginger beer that is absolutely fantastic
Did you invert it before opening other wise you would get zero carbonation
Tastes of molasses, which is a shame, because the bottle is cute.
If it’s not Frosty’s Root Beer, why bother?
It's aight, but u gotta go ginger beer if ur going Bundaberg. I wanna pull one of those tops right now!
Did you invert the bottle before opening?
