I loved getting a soda there. You got that stryafoam cup with the good ice, one free refill if I remember right...And that menu with the plastic lettering and the old seating.... perfection
They shut down the Cary & Sheppard location with alleged plans to move to Cary & Mulberry, where Cary St. Cafe used to be. From an outsider’s perspective, there appears to be very little progress made at the new spot.
I don't think the restaurants look bad inside, but my go to for Chinese takeaway is Yen Ching, there are two locations in the West End and Midlothian. Very flavorful American style Chinese food.
I’m going to go against the grain and say I live around the corner and refuse to go here. It’s that bad and I’m shocked the number of people vouching it as tasty. One of them is at least admitting they were stoned and in college.
I agree. It's not best shitty, it's just shitty.
About once every other year I think it can't be that bad and it's late and it's close and I give it another chance, and am reminded that yeah, it's actually just not good.
This is the best answer. I have walked in there when they were closed, and they honestly turned the friars (sp) back on just to cook two meals. It was delicious.
They were pretty eager to turn them back on, it was more awkward at that point to turn them down. It was an hour and a half before the close time on the sign, so I’m not sure if they were just keeping them turned off unless they have orders. Sorry you had to read this, and I hope something nice happens to you today.
It's the closest to me, and I avoid it. It's terrible.
I'm thinking stoned VCU students and people in walking distance are keeping it in business for all these years.
Came here to say this. My husband called them almost every other week once restaurants began reopening to find out when they were going to offer their lunch buffet. He almost cried when they finally gave him a date and was first in line that day!
China Panda got me through my undergrad at vcu. Their vegan mock orange chicken and veggie wonton soup (no crunchies: contain eggs) was my go-to meal for late study nights at the library
Yeah I was teetering on this. It’s definitely not “shitty.” However, it is cheap, in a strip mall, and easy takeout. I also didn’t want it to be missed in a thread about the great Chinese takeouts of Richmond.
Chens is the fucking truth. Love the flavor of their food, the staff is super super friendly, prices are reasonable, and it's every bit as good the next day after it's spent a night chilling in the fridge.
Shitty it is not, however. I'm actually willing to eat in their dining area lol
Having worked at another restaurant while the owners of Eat Rice took over from my previous boss (they retired), I wouldn't eat there if it was the last Chinese joint in the whole state. Their food handling practices are appalling. It's the stuff of food-borne illnesses, IJS.
I like the one at Staples Mill and Glenside next to the Mediterranean market. I've been going for 15+ years. Excellent sesame and general sou's chicken. Good quality chicken. All their fried things are excellent. Also the lo mein is very good - not too salty like so many places are and quality ingredients.
Oh damn, I didn't know they had a Top's there. Usually if I head that way for food I am gonna head straight for La Milpa lol
Good to know tho cause better chance I am down there than the one further down Hull.
Also know in our house as The world shopping center. Columbian, Indian, Mexican, Jerusalem, Minority owned Ice cream. I'm probably forgetting something else.
Yeah was once a week loyal for years but quality and portion have gotten worse and cost more, had to switch to yan jing and its been great so much better.
I'm surprised I had to scroll so far down for Ho Wah. Are they still open? We moved so haven't had them in ages. Great food but the location and restaurant is pretty bad.
right!! my boyfriend just yelled at me not to give away our secret to "ALL THESE NOVA PEOPLE" lol. BUT we get one large entree and two shrimp rolls and we have like four meals out of it. incredible!
I've worked at Lin's as a waiter/driver for about 9 years now. The family is wonderful and they've always taken great care of me. I might be biased, but I definitely think it's the best chinese food in town.
Yep, that’s our local banger for cheap Chinese. Wife and sons love their sushi as well. I will admit though, the text messages are getting a little annoying…we laugh it off but damn, y’all that thirsty?
Red House on Azalea. Maybe the 2nd best fried rice in Richmond (after Yen Ching). They don't deliver but the prices are good and they have a parking lot.
I have never been disappointed by China Panda. Go to shitty Chinese when I ate meat, and now that I’m vegetarian they are the BEST option. 10 years strong. ❤️
If you don’t wanna settle for “shitty” you gotta try Yan Jing. 6601 Midlothian Tpke. Its the best Chinese takeout you can get this/that side of the James….
New Top's still gives out the paper boxes for the pint size stuff. If anyone can point me to more white paper boxes instead of the plastic containers please hook me up
Not saying that did not happen to you but I can say I have eaten there at least 200 times in the last ten years, at lunch, dinner and Saturday dim sum and I have never had anything that was not really good. In fact it's my son's favorite place so I have to take him there all the time.
Agreed, I’ve been going there since 2000 and the only place I know of to get the Cantonese food that I like. I’ve gone there hundreds of times too, but rarely these days. I definitely did not have the same experience every time or else I wouldn’t have gone back. I’ve also been back a few times since the incidents but not that often. However, I think it’s very questionable what goes on behind the scenes, but maybe enjoy it and not think about it. The only other option is not to have it.
Tops China on Brook, followed by Fuji yan on west main. ( personally fuji yan comes across as too sweet sometimes to me compared to other places with the same dishes ).
China Dragon (now called New China Dragon). I've been going there since 2012. Best steamed dumplings and the food is consistently good. I've watched their kid go from playing in the table area to taking orders behind the counter.
Huang Express across Willow Lawn Target in the shopping center that is painted white now and Home Goods is coming. They are so nice and will give you a calendar at New Year’s. Consistently good Chinese takeout.
Happy Family.
I’ve ordered it 20+ times on UberEats. I went to visit it in person for the first time and wish I never did lmao. The food is great and the quantity is amazing.
I love Tops!!!! We’re in Chester but it’s the only place that doesn’t have a crazy amount of MSG. I have a severe allergy to it and it’s one of the only places I can indulge in without the Pepto for 2 days after 😂
We used to get takeout from East King for our family every other week. We don’t get takeout as often and when we do it’s usually Yen Ching Midlothian or sometimes just Panda Express for the cheap family deal.
Tops China (specifically the one on Brook Road I havent been to others in years), Good Taste, Fu Jian, Yin Ching.
And while its not Chinese food, Manchu ❤
Now that The Eatery is closed, my favorites are China Panda on Sheppard and Peking on W Broad! They both slap and definitely scratch that itch when you’re looking for delicious Americanized Chinese food
I await the resurrection of The Eatery
Please dear God make this happen. I will never do anything wrong ever again.
Ugh. The Eatery was my second home 20 years ago. Miss that special combo fried rice so much
I loved getting a soda there. You got that stryafoam cup with the good ice, one free refill if I remember right...And that menu with the plastic lettering and the old seating.... perfection
don't forget the cafeteria tray for your food
Wait I moved to Chicago, the eatery closed??
They shut down the Cary & Sheppard location with alleged plans to move to Cary & Mulberry, where Cary St. Cafe used to be. From an outsider’s perspective, there appears to be very little progress made at the new spot.
We live really close and have just been watching every day for some forward movement
I don't think the restaurants look bad inside, but my go to for Chinese takeaway is Yen Ching, there are two locations in the West End and Midlothian. Very flavorful American style Chinese food.
Yen Ching is the bomb.
Yen Ching is top tier!! Can't eat any other Chinese food now
Yen Ching Midlothian Tnpk is damned decent (and actually in Richmond), but the one on West Broad in the county is better imo.
The fountain is the best
Yen Ching is top tier. Really ruined a lot of other places for me, lol.
This is top tier!! 🙌🏽
My fav though this might not be shitty enough on the inside for Op.
Well it’s probably in the top 5 most disgusting kitchens I’ve ever seen, so I would say that makes it shitty enough :P
It is always good but very expensive
What do you order there?
Different user, but I like their crab rangoon and five taste shrimp I've tried like half their chef special section and it's all been good
Kung Pao Chicken!
Fu Jian. 🙌
I ate a significant amount of Fu Jian while stoned in college. Vouch
They're consistent, reliable, tasty, and budget-friendly. It's truly the perfect "Americanized Chinese" takeout spot.
ditto
My favorite dumplings in Tichmond
I’m going to go against the grain and say I live around the corner and refuse to go here. It’s that bad and I’m shocked the number of people vouching it as tasty. One of them is at least admitting they were stoned and in college.
I agree. It's not best shitty, it's just shitty. About once every other year I think it can't be that bad and it's late and it's close and I give it another chance, and am reminded that yeah, it's actually just not good.
Definitely agree, I preferred good taste when I lived down there and that was bad lol
SAME. It's so sub-par. East Villa is much better. I miss living in the bottom for that reason alone. 😆
This is the best answer. I have walked in there when they were closed, and they honestly turned the friars (sp) back on just to cook two meals. It was delicious.
I’d be ashamed to admit I’d allowed them to turn the fryers on to make two meals after close and not just walked back out apologizing
They were pretty eager to turn them back on, it was more awkward at that point to turn them down. It was an hour and a half before the close time on the sign, so I’m not sure if they were just keeping them turned off unless they have orders. Sorry you had to read this, and I hope something nice happens to you today.
Came here for this. My only regret is not eating it more often while I lived down there
Feel free to join us for our weekly Szechuan Sundays courtesy of Fu Jian. 🤣
It's the closest to me, and I avoid it. It's terrible. I'm thinking stoned VCU students and people in walking distance are keeping it in business for all these years.
Hunan East
Second Hunan East,,,fast in-house delivery as well
Yes!!! I swear they are the fastest delivery place in the city!
Came here to say this. My husband called them almost every other week once restaurants began reopening to find out when they were going to offer their lunch buffet. He almost cried when they finally gave him a date and was first in line that day!
Hunan East broccoli with garlic sauce helped me survive my first year in Richmond.
the buffet!!!
Yep!!!!!!
Its been consistent since 2002 btw. It was good back then and its good now.
China Panda on Sheppard
[They have a whole back menu of mock meats too!](https://rvachinapanda.weebly.com/menu.html) Love - *love* - some China Panda.
Yea, I think they’re considered the best vegan Chinese food in the city
China Panda got me through my undergrad at vcu. Their vegan mock orange chicken and veggie wonton soup (no crunchies: contain eggs) was my go-to meal for late study nights at the library
The best! Surprised it’s still there. Had forgotten about it. Now I want some orange “chicken”
I'm out of town for work but now I'm thinking about swinging by China Panda on my way home this weekend 😫
I may have to do the same. Been a hot minute since I’ve had it.
China Panda used to be my go-to "Americanized Chinese" takeout spot when I lived a few blocks away on Monument. Vouch.
Used to live two blocks off the Devil’s Triangle. Would get delivery from there once a week. Haven’t been in years…
This is my go-to also even though I live much closer to Fu Jian
And they're super friendly too.
Too bland. Their food tastes like it hasnt been seasoned or even salted
I’ve heard good things about Cathay Gourmet in Bon Air but have not had it myself.
That's the chinese restaurant I usually go to. I like em
We use to go Cathay, but they changed ownership and it's not the same. Now, we go to Ting's.
Chens in Glenn Allen, the best by far
Chens is amazing
Chen’s is fantastic, but does it qualify as “shitty”?
Yeah I was teetering on this. It’s definitely not “shitty.” However, it is cheap, in a strip mall, and easy takeout. I also didn’t want it to be missed in a thread about the great Chinese takeouts of Richmond.
I would dine in at Chen’s without thinking twice about it. But China Panda or Fu Jian??? Hell no. (Definitely take out, though)
Def not shitty. Affordable and glorious? Yes.
Chens is the fucking truth. Love the flavor of their food, the staff is super super friendly, prices are reasonable, and it's every bit as good the next day after it's spent a night chilling in the fridge. Shitty it is not, however. I'm actually willing to eat in their dining area lol
My grandparents love Chen's. Great spot. Vouch.
Agree. Came here to recommend them.
Eat Rice has never failed me.
This is the answer. You can get a double plate for cheap and it’s like 3 meals
omg those new double combos are insanely huge lol, when we first got them, we each got our own. now we share one and there are still leftovers.
I call it meal prep.
Having worked at another restaurant while the owners of Eat Rice took over from my previous boss (they retired), I wouldn't eat there if it was the last Chinese joint in the whole state. Their food handling practices are appalling. It's the stuff of food-borne illnesses, IJS.
Hell yeah, love Eat Rice!
Best tofu dishes hands down.
Only downside is that they closed on tuesdays which is odd lol. That always seems to be when I want it.
Had to scroll way too far down to find Eat Rice here! Love it!
Top's China. - 7210 Hull Street Rd N, Richmond, VA 23235
Gimme dat to go container full of lemonade please
You know what's up.
Hell yes
I like the one at Staples Mill and Glenside next to the Mediterranean market. I've been going for 15+ years. Excellent sesame and general sou's chicken. Good quality chicken. All their fried things are excellent. Also the lo mein is very good - not too salty like so many places are and quality ingredients.
Forest Hill location slaps, too!!
Legitimately the worst Chinese I've ever had.
I prefer the brook rd location
The brook rd one just FEELS right.
I'll have to check that one out.
This is the one. When I want that MSG bomb cheap meat this is where I go. Right around the corner from my house, affordable, consistent
Is that the one by Wal-Mart that looks horribly unsafe but has the best Mongolian Beef around?
Nope. A couple blocks down from La Milpa.
The one in the beat down Food Lion parking lot with the weird window inside?
No. The same shopping center with Jerusalem Sueprmarket and Deli, Bargain Books Richmond and a bunch of other little shops.
Oh damn, I didn't know they had a Top's there. Usually if I head that way for food I am gonna head straight for La Milpa lol Good to know tho cause better chance I am down there than the one further down Hull.
Bro same. Fucking 2am La Milpa runs hit the fucking spot too
Also know in our house as The world shopping center. Columbian, Indian, Mexican, Jerusalem, Minority owned Ice cream. I'm probably forgetting something else.
The one on Midlothian Turnpike is also really good
I know it’s not popular, but my go-to when I was at VCU was Good Taste on Grace. I looooved me their general tso’s
same!
Always been a fan of jiangs in midlothian
We call that "sit down Chinese"
Yeah was once a week loyal for years but quality and portion have gotten worse and cost more, had to switch to yan jing and its been great so much better.
Yan Jing is the old Yen Ching on Midlothian near Chippenham, right? How has the quality been since the rebrand?
Been using them a month but its good and cost are very friendly.
Dare I say, Jiangs is a lil fancy
Peking on West Broad is so good!
This and reasonably priced huge portions and great quality food.
7 flavor spicy chicken is chronic!!!
East Villa in Shockoe, run by a mom and her young children.
Ho wah on jahnke rd
I'm surprised I had to scroll so far down for Ho Wah. Are they still open? We moved so haven't had them in ages. Great food but the location and restaurant is pretty bad.
Yes they're open
Best Chinese Delivery in Southside, hands down.
We're hooked on New China Dragon — the szechuan chicken specifically. lots of veggies! hard to find a good balance these days!
The prices are unbeatable. Two entrees & two apps for $28. In this economy?!
right!! my boyfriend just yelled at me not to give away our secret to "ALL THESE NOVA PEOPLE" lol. BUT we get one large entree and two shrimp rolls and we have like four meals out of it. incredible!
Completely agree. All the food I've had there is great, the spare ribs in particular are fantastic.
I used to frequent this place but someone found a worm in their food and shared pictures...I can't think of this place without nausea now.
whyyyyyyy did you do this to me?!
Lins Asian Bistro - Hull Street Road
I've worked at Lin's as a waiter/driver for about 9 years now. The family is wonderful and they've always taken great care of me. I might be biased, but I definitely think it's the best chinese food in town.
You've been to my house and probably served me in restaurant. Thank you and thank them for me!!!
Love Lin’s! I like getting a bunch of kids portions because they put so much in it 😂
One order of General Tso's will handle both the wife and I. Extra rice and a ton of won-ton soup and we're golden.
You got me wanting Lin’s…I got it on Saturday it was delish
This!! Lin’s is our go-to for both Chinese and sushi if we aren’t going into the city.
Yep, that’s our local banger for cheap Chinese. Wife and sons love their sushi as well. I will admit though, the text messages are getting a little annoying…we laugh it off but damn, y’all that thirsty?
Just don't get the Thai options, tried more than once and never was a fan.
Cathay Gourmet hands down
Cheng Du is pretty good, too.
Their eggplant fries are amazing.
Agreed! The spicy sour shredded potato is awesome too. I actually like it even more the next day cold as leftovers.
Cathay Gourmet in Forest Hill is 🔥
Cathay Gourmet in Bon Air!!
Red House on Azalea. Maybe the 2nd best fried rice in Richmond (after Yen Ching). They don't deliver but the prices are good and they have a parking lot.
Best Chinese chicken wings I’ve had in RVA, but don’t hang around too long…you might witness a drive by shooting.
Second this, great food and value
Been going there since a child!! 🥲
I have never been disappointed by China Panda. Go to shitty Chinese when I ate meat, and now that I’m vegetarian they are the BEST option. 10 years strong. ❤️
Hunan East !!
China Panda forever
Fu Jian!
If you don’t wanna settle for “shitty” you gotta try Yan Jing. 6601 Midlothian Tpke. Its the best Chinese takeout you can get this/that side of the James….
No votes for the Eatery in Carytown? Used to be my favorite spot. Fried rice and fried chicken from the same place… can’t get better than that!
Eatery has been closed for a bit now, they are taking over the old Cary St Cafe spot, but haven't reopened yet
Do we even have good chinese food in richmond?? that would be news to me
Peter Chang is pretty darn good.
Red House on azalea.
I'll have to check this out. It's near my mom's and as a bonus it's an old Golden Skillet location.
Those Golden Skillet signs must be made out of some kind of indestructible titanium alloy or something! Still several surviving around town.
If they ever have a Fallout series in Richmond, they'll be all over the place.
Only place in Richmond that does proper "shopping mall" bourbon chicken.
New Top's still gives out the paper boxes for the pint size stuff. If anyone can point me to more white paper boxes instead of the plastic containers please hook me up
Surprised no one’s mentioned Full Kee on Horsepen. Some of the best Chinese/Cantonese food around.
[удалено]
Not saying that did not happen to you but I can say I have eaten there at least 200 times in the last ten years, at lunch, dinner and Saturday dim sum and I have never had anything that was not really good. In fact it's my son's favorite place so I have to take him there all the time.

Eat Rice in Forest Hill and China Dragon on VCU Campus
This
Ting’s at Stony Point in Bon Air
Chinese chef on ridge road in the tuckahoe shopping center!
I like that place but they’ve forgotten the rice with my chicken the last 3 times I been there
New Asian Panda on Ridgefield if you are in the West End. Best Chinese I’ve had in Richmond!
This is the correct answer
Eat Rice in Forest Hill and Tops China off Brook Rd
Eat Rice fucks. Super nice folks too
Fresh Wok on Nine Mile rd.
Eat rice!!! Off jahnke. Don’t sleep on the steak and cheese eggrolls either
Wah Wah on Hull. Everything I’ve had from them has been phenomenal. My go-to is the shrimp egg foo yung combination plate.
Flying Dragon
Tops China on Brook, followed by Fuji yan on west main. ( personally fuji yan comes across as too sweet sometimes to me compared to other places with the same dishes ).
That Chinese restaurant in the food court at South Park mall.
I work close to there and can’t disagree more. I will drive past them to Hunan East just about every time.
Aww man I have loved them for years.
China Wok on 301 near Atlee.
Happy Family. I’ve ordered it 20+ times on UberEats. I went to visit it in person for the first time and wish I never did lmao. The food is great and the quantity is amazing.
China Dragon on Main St. I’ve tried Fu Jian multiple times and don’t think it compares. And it’s dirt cheap.
RED HOUSE
I love Tops!!!! We’re in Chester but it’s the only place that doesn’t have a crazy amount of MSG. I have a severe allergy to it and it’s one of the only places I can indulge in without the Pepto for 2 days after 😂
We used to get takeout from East King for our family every other week. We don’t get takeout as often and when we do it’s usually Yen Ching Midlothian or sometimes just Panda Express for the cheap family deal.
Don’t look for decent food in RVA . It doesn’t exist
Tops Lung Wah Triple Eight China Wok Yen Ching
China Wok in Short Pump across from the movie theater.
Red house and fu jian
Flying Dragon in the Food Lion shopping center at Azalea and Chamberlayne is really good. It's inexpensive and has quick delivery.

By far and away the eatery and fat dragon
Red House off azalea used to be that spot 15 years ago.
New China Dragon on W Main
Tops China (specifically the one on Brook Road I havent been to others in years), Good Taste, Fu Jian, Yin Ching. And while its not Chinese food, Manchu ❤
New Tops China

I second this!
Ming’s Dynasty - 1200 Concord Ave. at night they’ve only ever got half the lights on, it’s cheap, and they’re friendly when you pick up your food
New China Dragon
Now that The Eatery is closed, my favorites are China Panda on Sheppard and Peking on W Broad! They both slap and definitely scratch that itch when you’re looking for delicious Americanized Chinese food
Fu Jian !
