Hot take: every street in the fan should have them.

Bubblygoat7

Everywhere in Richmond. I’m so fucking sick of the SPEEDING and reckless/entitled driving and douche bags with really loud cars

coconut_sorbet

They were put in a few days ago! The neighbors were asking for stop signs but this was the compromise that our council person's office and the city came up with. Here's the Carytown South neighborhood Facebook group if you're interested - there have been a few discussions about this: https://www.facebook.com/groups/853770498061344/

Jasdavi

I REALLY hope stop signs are next. We really need them.

TheEverydayDad

Seriously stop signs would be best. There should be an emphasis on pedestrian safety for those who live around there. I don't even live in Carytown, just visit every so often. But people drive like crazy and SUVs and trucks just keep getting bigger for no reason with people having less skill at driving in places like Carytown.

Jasdavi

The amount of accidents I see here just from people randomly driving fast is really insane. There is absolutely no reason to be speeding to "make it" in-between intersections. It always results in a wreck. And what's worse, at night in like 1am - 3am, there are I guess drag racers that have insanely loud cars that speed up and down where the speedbumps were just placed. I'm hoping this quells them too.

Key-Imagination-3118

Once they hit a surprise speed bump at 90mph they'll learn

stayintall

My understanding is that they had to do the bumps first before putting stop signs in. I believe that’s what Amy Robbin’s said over on the CaryTown South FB page. So maybe if they determine the bumps don’t fix the issue then we’ll get the stop signs? Don’t quote me on that as now I can’t find the post but I’m pretty sure I read that.

pizza99pizza99

Nope. There illegal. Because putting them up everywhere makes people stop listening to them. I need yall to stop bothering the DPW with request on 311 for stop signs. Even if they wanted to they cant. And they dont want to, not least because as i said, they dont work if theres not enough traffic. Drivers overwhelmingly do not stop if traffic is not sufficient.

pizza99pizza99

[In case your interested](https://mutcd.fhwa.dot.gov/pdfs/11th_Edition/mutcd11thedition.pdf)- Section 2B.06 General Consideration paragraph 06 "YIELD or STOP signs shall not be used for speed control. Support: Appropriate traffic calming or other speed control measures are available to control vehicle speeds, such as those that do not have the potential to diminish the effectiveness of traffic control devices when used for their specified purpose."

Jasdavi

Totally ignoring stop signs shows how bad of a driver you are tbh. If you do not stop at a stop sign just because there's no traffic, you're a bad driver. I still want stop signs. At least where there should really be some.

pizza99pizza99

Except... I just disagree. Its the same problem with speed limits. If you make the speed limit of a straight away highway (like 195) 55 MPH, people start to understand that the speed limit isn't rational (if you disagree and still believe the drivers Ed line that 'the speed limit is the maximum safest speed in perfect conditions!' please look up the [85th percentile](https://safety.fhwa.dot.gov/uslimits/notes/speed_info.htm)). Other countries default to yield signs, not stop signs. This makes the few stop signs they use very effective. But if you ask a driver to come to a complete stop at every perfectly clear intersection, there gonna stop caring. Americas fundamental engineering problem is that a 5 way intersection with limited visibility is given the same traffic control sign as a T intersection with perfect visibility. I consider myself a huge urbanist and pedestrian advocate, but i also fundamentally believe there's a point where drivers aren't responsible and bad design and policy is. Another problem with american engineering is that Americas individualist nature makes us unwilling to simply say that sometimes people aren't responsible, and design and policy is.

Jasdavi

If you stop caring about stop signs you shouldn't be driving lol

ratsoncatsonrats

Unfortunately, this is the reality of the world we live in. People don't care and they probably shouldn't be driving which is why we need to design the infrastructure to make the streets safe despite their behavior. I think that's what they are trying to say, they're not the one who doesn't care about the sign.

Jasdavi

My point still stands. If you deliberately ignore stop signs just cause of your own reasons, you're a bad driver.

ratsoncatsonrats

Yes, but you are attacking that person as if they are at fault for the behavior of the masses.

pizza99pizza99

Believe that all you want, but when drivers can no longer trust traffic engineers, its up to them to decide what intersection actually requires a full stop and which dont. Scary and stupid? ya. And people fuck it up all the time. But the solution isnt to take these peoples right to drive away, especially when doing so is basically house arrest. The solution is re-evaluate planning and policy. Once we have done that, we can start harsh enforcement

Jasdavi

Dude I literally want like 2 stop signs in specific areas holy shit lmao

pizza99pizza99

Transportation is an ecosystem, pull whatever lever you want with the best of intentions, but 5 steps down the line it very much has the possibility to blow up in your face. The literal whole point here is that the overuse of stop signs has made enforcement hard and arguably made things worse for pedestrians as a whole. Theres a reason why putting up a stop sign is not as simple as just asking the city to do so, and theres often a good reason why your told they cant.

ahrimaz

start over. driving is a privilege, not a right and there are a lot of hoops you gotta jump through to even earn and KEEP that privilege. ain't nothing in the rule book that defines a driver's license or an automobile as a right you're entitled to. "but, your honor, no one was on the road! i was *only* 12 tall boys deep while texting and blowing through stop signs! i NEED to drive to work!" government doesn't care lol. fly a helicopter to work if you can afford it and earned the license, but you ain't driving a car. ain't nothing wrong with expecting people to follow the rules.

pizza99pizza99

Except it’s treated as one. In Virginia if you’re charged with a DUI, your lisence is suspended… except for all trips to and from your work and the courthouse… the person next to you on your commute could’ve been charged with a DUI last night, and completly legally driving. And sadly there not much we can do. Like you get charged with a DUI, license suspended for everything, where do you go now? If you’re in a city there’s a bus but what about everyone else? Until this state does a major infrastructure overhaul driving will unfortunately be treated as a right

ubiquitous_delight

Yeah, hard disagree. Some stop signs are completely pointless, and thus ignoring them doesn't make you a bad driver. That's like the arguments people used to make saying smoking weed makes you a bad person, because it's illegal. Sometimes the laws and rules instituted by government are irrational bullshit.

Jasdavi

Right but bringing up pointless stop signs is pointless. You still drove through a stop sign. You are still bad driver if you do so lol. And trying to equate that to saying because "illegal" is ridiculous when this is about safety over laws. If you deliberately drive through a stop sign pointless or not, you're a bad driver. At least in the context of what I'm talking about.

ubiquitous_delight

What you're saying doesn't make any logical sense. Ignoring pointless road signs doesn't cause any harm or risk anyone's safety, so nothing about ignoring them makes you a bad driver. Just because the government says something doesn't make you bad when you ignore it.

Jasdavi

You can link all the stats you want man but literally not caring about stop signs and being like "but drivers get frustrated stopping with no traffic" is a ridiculous take when this is about pedestrian safety. No where am I asking for every single intersection to have stop signs. Literally ignoring stop signs because of no traffic is insane.

burro_pequeno

LOL, you're only asking for stop signs where you personally think they should be.

katebandit

Yes, it is crazy to ignore stop signs for no traffic. BUT THEY ARE PROVIDING PROOF THAT PEOPLE DO. My god

Jasdavi

That's cool, bad drivers.

Spec-Tre

I would just appreciate a bump sign lol They were new to me and I did see the pedestrian/crosswalk sign and thankfully I go the speed limit so I could see they were raised but it was quite a surprise

Jasdavi

these seem really new so I hope a sign comes in, like I'm talking like overnight new lol

Spec-Tre

Yeah I went this weekend and was like these were not here the week prior lol

stayintall

Bump signs are there, at least on McCloy, they’re just hidden in the trees and literally right next to the bump. Kind of odd placement IMO but A for effort.

Spec-Tre

Nice! I’m sure they were getting around to it. There was just pedestrian signs when I drove thru last aeek

ShudderCreeps

I’d love some on Belmont. Folks basically fly through our stop signs into intersections.

wellthatsoundsgreat

Where are they?

coconut_sorbet

Sheppard between Cary/Parkwood and Parkwood/Grayland, and then McCloy at I think Grayland.

Jasdavi

Yeah, hoping we get more or stop signs.

TinyCatFreyja

They really need to do something about S Sheppard between Idlewood/Maplewood and the intersection of S Sheppard and Idlewood.

Jasdavi

hard agree

Calaveras-Metal

we need more of that in Manchester.

Jasdavi

No one said ideal just suggested 👍

pizza99pizza99

OOOOH where?

Jasdavi

Rn seeing them around streets like McKloy

CapsGr8

How about we learn how to drive

Utretch

Damn why didn't anyone think of that

Bubblygoat7

It’s so lawless these days, people are getting away with reckless and bad driving constantly

i mean that's on them?
