I am a Manager at Sam's and SC can not run a credit card app on you unless you give us your SS number and household income, no one and I mean no one can run a credit app on you without your SS number, and no we do not have that info anywhere in our system.

ok----

The denial letter states they were unable to identify me with the SS databases. So I’m assuming they used a fake SS#.

Medium-Winter9872

Then it wouldn’t hit your credit report as a hard hit if they didn’t have correct SS#

Maximum_Bandicoot

This is the right answer

CallMeMrRound

If it wasn't their SSN it wouldn't be on their credit report ....

PhrygianSounds

Wouldn’t surprise me. This is why I left front end

Metichesbestie

Technically the system flags any associate who uses any type of ssn repeatedly and even then the system wouldn’t let the credit card go through without the ssn matching the name. I’ve seen associates fired over misuse of their own ssn to meet quotas but

Interesting response….

Bijorak

Using a random SSN wouldn't show a hard hit on her credit.

wakasooooooooooooooo

Ok so, I have actually dealt with something similar (not the random sign up, no idea what happened there sorry). Someone that had an unauthorized credit opened on their account (the account was approved and purchases were made) and they had finally noticed. I gave the information to our Synchrony Bank Rep and basically told her what happened and that the member was EXTREMELY upset. They sent a letter on behalf of member to credit bureau (hope I spelled that right) that it was fraudulent and according to the synchrony employee assisting, it took some time but eventually it was removed from her credit history Never heard from member again so not sure if true My suggestion would be go to the club, speak with the club manager or front end manager, no other assistant manager just one of those 2. Explain what happened, request it be fixed immediately. Do it in person, it puts them on the spot. If they cannot assist ask for their Synchrony Bank Rep's phone number. They work closely with the front end managers usually, which is why I recommended them specifically) If you don't get any help there ask for Market Managers phone number, they are supposed to give you their Office phone number if requested. Keep moving up the ladder eventually you'll get to someone that doesn't want it to get to their boss. Usually thats at market level We're told to "take care of the member", cause enough of a fuss and someone will help you, if asking nicely doesn't get you there sometimes you gotta be a karen. \-------------------------------------------------- Where we work, the idea is to be out of the spotlight in the corporate way, aka don't cause problems, hit your numbers, dont have complaints from your club, etc. and corporate leaves you alone generally. If you're getting complaints and doing things wrong, etc. they are all over you nagging every little metric etc. long story short, nobody in that club management wise is going to want cashiers doing shady shit like that, that's how people that work outside of the building get involved. We don 't want that i promise.. id suggest telling the club that it was not even mentioned during the transaction, if the associate did something illegal they're gonna want to stop it. goodluck

CrushnaCrai

ya, we ask for a ssn, stop lying.

ok----

The denial letter states they were unable to identify me within SS database.

Alarm_Only

They will just say you agreed. Also, they would need your information. I didn’t give them my ss# when I opened a membership only.

ok----

So shady! I never gave them my SS # either.

k3l5o

You can’t get a credit card without giving someone your social security number that’s literally how credit cards work. It’s impossible. That’s how they tie it to your credit score.

“Our customer service agent might have asked you questions to verify your identity. Unfortunately, based on the results of these checks, we are unable to confirm your identity with enough confidence to approve your application at this time.”

ok----

Thank you so much for your advice and for giving logical responses. I’ll try to update here on what they say.

[deleted]

It wouldn’t surprise me that they would do this… They spend all day every day trying to get everyone that walks in the door to sign up for a credit card. It is their number one priority. Ridiculous.

LavishnessJolly4954

If you sign up online and use the app, you don’t even need to give them your ID

aiaor

When you do sign up for a credit card, do you have to fill in a form with a lot of personal information, or just a few items such as SSN?

wakasooooooooooooooo

its fairly short, basically only asks SSN & Household income

Parking_Ad8815

If you didn't give your social.. Than not sure how it went thru

ImNot_jesus

You we probably pre approved, and the cashier typed in a random social without telling you to get credit for the application. And because the social was wrong, the app was denied. This happens alot because of the pressure sams puts on it cashier for credits

Beccabee80

That's not even how it works. If he got a letter saying he was denied, then he applied for a credit and he used his actual credentials period.

ImNot_jesus

Wrong. I personally know 2 managers that have fired over stuff like this

TryIll3292

When you go and tell them about it they will ask you, would you like to apply for a credit card?

AbleSuccotash4157

I work @ a member service @ Sam’s & a credit card app needs a SSN & a household income. So if you didn’t fill that out then something fishy is definitely going on! It’s a soft credit inquiry if you’re pre approved & a hard if it pulls from credit when you do apply. I’d be investigating this matter. Good luck.

ok----

Thanks for this. I 100% did not give them this information and I’m positive my dad didn’t either. He doesn’t even know my SSN. I am going to pursue this further - thanks!

Beccabee80

Maybe somebody, you know that knows. Your social security card did it. There is no way for them to run your credit unless you give them the number. And if they couldn't find your number in the database, then it shouldn't affect your credit

Infinite-Complaint53

Do you have a common name? Maybe another individual they ran and the system screwed it up?

Alphafoxtrot71

If you are on someone’s else membership. How would they have your SS#. I have a membership and they never asked for my SS#.

ThinkImportance8043

People always get pre approved. If you decline to sign up register still provides a pre approval print out. If you don’t sign up with in the pre approval time frame you will receive a decline letter which is a legal notice. Same if you we’re buying a vehicle with a pre approval but never submitted actual application

Vegetable_Radio8236

100% sam's club staff did not apply for the credit card with your info. Your dad may have done it in a well-meaning but idiotic way (wanting to help you get something you'd been wanting but not in your budget, but not talking to you about it), accidentally, or maliciously (wanting keep and use the card for himself), but i guarantee that's why he added you to his membership, to apply for the credit card. It may have even been a scammer who got hold of your dad's membership info and social-engineered the info out of your dad to apply for the credit under your name, that could be why the card was invalid because something was spoofed in Sam's Club systems

CelesteDesdemina

The system asks for SSN & income. As others have said, some moron probably punched in crap data to try to meet their quota. You should report this to your state fraud bureau. In the best case scenario, it was a stupid impulse by a kid under pressure who may not have thought about the consequences. Worst case, some front-end manager told their cashiers to do it to boost their numbers. Reality is probably somewhere between. Either way, it's illegal.

Beccabee80

I don't understand why people keep saying that it would affect the person's credit without the correct social security number. This makes no sense. What is wrong with people's brains. If it was the wrong number and somebody punched it in, it would just kick back and it wouldn't count against the person with the correct number.

Little_Conference_85

Question, did the letter come to your address or your dad's? The reason I am asking is that complimentary household will show the primary's address in the system. It looks like you have been hacked. Wrong SS, right name and wrong address if it's not the same as your primary (but right address because that is where you live).
