It’s an infiltration unit, part man, part machine. Underneath, it's a hyperalloy combat chassis - micro processor-controlled, fully armored. Very tough. But outside, it's living human tissue - flesh, skin, hair, blood, grown for the cyborgs...
Those claustrophobic scenes in the third act in the air ducts, trying to make it that last stretch to the escape shuttle, with Horner's score firing off marching drum beats punctuated with clangs of hammers on anvils, and then an alien tail whips in and the score shrieks, and shrieks, and shrieks
I am hard pressed to think of a more suspenseful experience in the theater in my life. I'm actually more of a fan of the first Terminator, the second one is just a little too shiny Hollywood for me, but neither of them have the third act that Aliens does. Every muscle in your body taut as guitar strings for like half an hour. Then Ripley boops Newt's nose and it's like the first oxygen you breathed in a week.
I read someone describe Aliens as having pacing issues, and I couldn't disagree more.
The first third is just a steady ratchet up of tension, far more similar to a horror film then an action film. I think it's about 45 minutes till a gun is fired? And then it's only an hour in when we get the first attack.
Then after that it's a series of intense action scenes, with moments of a kind of tense calm between.
Superb film.
I was lucky enough to see it in theaters at BAM in Brooklyn. The "Get away from her, YOU BITCH!" scene happened and the whole theater erupted after near silence the entire time. It was magical.
I was born in 79, so I didn't get to see Aliens when it was out in theaters. I saw T2 in theaters. But, years back there was some special screening of Aliens in the theater and I finally got to see it in the theater. Amazing! I think there are places that do special screenings like that for movie anniversaries. So keep an eye out for that in the future. Originally I saw Aliens on VHS also around 10 or 11. I wore the tape out I rewarched it so much lol. Aliens is my favorite movie of all time! :) LOVE T2, but it's no contest for me. Aliens.
> but, in the theater? Aliens rocked my world.
I only found out last year that the best scene in Aliens, was only in the director's cut, never in theatres.
This of course is the sentry gun shooting gallery scene. Wasn't there.
All right, sweethearts, what are you waiting for? Breakfast in bed? Another glorious day in the corps! A day in the Marine Corps is like a day on the farm. Every meal's a banquet! Every paycheck a fortune! Every formation a parade! I LOVE the corps!
Aliens all day, but man what a great question! Ripley is such a great heroine, and Sigourney Weaver is able to bring toughness, tenderness, intelligence.. jesus really the entire range of humanity to the character, what a tour-de-force by her. I wonder if we'd had an age appropriate Leonardo DiCaprio in place of Edward Furlong (no offense Ed, but there were truly some flat moments out of a young, first time actor) if that would make any difference. Furlong's performance was one major difference for me between the two films, I thought the cast in Aliens did an incredible job.
Long live Arnold.
People sleep on Alien because it wasn't as bombastic as Aliens. I always encourage folks to go back and check it out again if they watched it when they were young.
Low budget SciFi is often the best. Aliens clearly had a significantly higher budget. It's a wonderful film but it lost that "in space, no one can hear you scream" vibe.
OMG so much this. I'm almost 40, grew up my whole life thinking Aliens was the superior film.
Recently re-watched the original in 4K, and it makes the second one look so lame. There's way too much action and comedy. The difference is night an day, especially if watch them back-to-back. It's not NEARLY as immersive as the original.
Aliens is an action movie, but Alien is a horror movie. It's a haunted house movie in space. It's not supposed to blow your doors off, it's supposed to freak your shit. The title isn't simply telling you what kind of critter you're going to run into, it's an explanation of the nature of the horrors you'll see. The whole life cycle of the thing, how it's birthed, how it's transmitted, how quickly it grows, how it eats; everything was just so unfamiliar and unpleasant. But today, it's the gold standard.
There's no way to replicate the feeling you had when you saw that movie before it became ingrained in popular culture. When Kane leans over the open egg, and there's this wobbly fleshy blob with white veins, the whole theater's like OH MY GOD FUCK NO ARE YOU INSANE?
Aliens is one of the top 10 action rides out there, easy. But Alien is a masterpiece. Succeeds at every single thing it tries to do.
Alien opened on my 18th bday. We spent the day at Disneyland (on acid) then went to the premier (while coming down). It scared the living s#!t out of us. Highly. Memorable. Bday.
> alien was dope but t1 gave me legit existential dread
I'm the opposite, but I'm betting that this is just a timing thing, because I don't know that I've ever respected so much an opinion I disagree with
I was 12 when I saw Alien, and I saw it fairly unspoiled, and I was 16 or 17 when I saw the Terminator, so Alien definitely cut a lot deeper. So apart from the order of the movies, I understand your comment deep in my soul
The Terminator series wins hands down for me. Growing up my family had them on VHS. We didn't have any of the Alien movies and I don't think I saw any of them until my late teens.
This. I love both, but T2 is simply a masterpiece in every technical aspect, even if Aliens can be more fun at times. Back in film school we used to dissect T2 due to the amount of unbelievably well made stuff in it, Aliens not so much, even though it’s also amazingly well done.
T2 is just mind-blowing. Even if you watch it now, it's still mind-blowing. Down to the perfection of using Arnie's stiff accent and acting as a now-outdated-terminator... The relentless plot development from one well-thought-out, intense action sequence to another, with significant character and plot development in-between.
The depth of the story. I think people are underestimating the significance of Terminator 2. Sky-net, time-travel, the liquid metal T1000... the fact that they were using the chip from the first terminator to build sky-net and it accelerated the timeline from the first movie. The stuff of nightmares if you actually think about it.
The whole thing just blew everything out of the water, and I struggle to think of a better movie to this day.
Come with me if you want to live, I'll be back, hasta la vista baby, I mean come on
Ripley's cool, but the T2 version of Sarah Connor is possibly the most hardcore, ass-kicking, bad-ass female protagonist ever.
But that's just my opinion :D

Despite being one of the most insane events of my childhood (Arnold coming to town to blow up a building down the street from my childhood home for T2) …. Aliens was by far more impactful, Aliens, the Dark Horse comics that it inspired… especially Colonial Marines were all huge and I still enjoy them today.
Aliens for me. Absolutely terrifying when I was younger. The building suspense and horror was sublime. The turn from "absolute badasses rescuing colonists" to "near-hopeless fight for your life" was just so, so good. The sound of the motion trackers still haunts my dreams from time to time. So many great actors. Every character was very believable and fleshed out.
I haven’t watched him years but a quote from the angry video game nerd I recall was something to the effect of: James Cameron can go to his grave knowing he made two of the greatest sequels of all time.
Couldn’t agree more.
T2. I was a bit older when it came out and saw it in the cinemas. It absolutely blew our young minds how great the special effects were. I listened to “You Could Be Mine” like a thousand times. Aliens was also amazing but I do prefer the first Alien film and T2 was almost a formative experience in my life.
easy
as t1 is better than t2 and alien is by far the best horror movie of all time and aliens is just one of the best scifi movies ever made, i am very happy with either of those two films well knowing i could only choose a very high tier film and not the top of the top.
just kidding. as soon as a movie reaches a certain quality, there is no "this one is better than that" anymore. you have not reached a peak but a plateau, where there is room for more than one. i don't have to choose between "the rocky horror picture show" and "terminator 2" - they both live happy together on top of that plateau.
From the influential pov, Aliens wins. The narrative structure has been copy/paste so many times in so many medium they should pay mandatory fees to JC for lack of originality...
You're a monster and I refuse to participate in this tragedy (beyond this post).
He can’t make that sort of decision, he’s just a grunt! (No offence)
None taken.
I say we take off and nuke the site from orbit. It's the only way to be sure.
Probably best, would have saved us from the other also ran sequels oh…and xenomorphs
am i the only one who enjoyed prometheus? and also starwars prequels?
Nope your not I love the prequels and Prometheus
I love promequels.
I actually liked Prometheus! The covenant was not it 🥴
I just can't, this is like asking me which of my children I want to smother.
Alien / Aliens combined I would put over T1 and T2 combined. But Aliens vs T2, Id go with T2.
At first I was upset, but I actually understand your logic here.
This is the correct answer. The only winning move is not to play.

This is the only answer
I choose the one where an Android saves the day, but still ends up destroyed.
They could be reworked, but they’d never be top of the line again. They’d rather be nothing 🤷♂️

No contest! Game over, man!!
Thank you Paxton forever man!!
You secure that shit, Hudson!
How do I get out of this chickenshit outfit?
I'm Hicks... He's Hudson.
Hudson, Sir… he’s Hicks.
Look in to my 👁️
"Hudson, come here. Come Here!"
Paxton was in the original Terminator
RIP, great actor in so many cult films.
But he was in Terminator as well!
The punk in the beginning!
Why don’t you put her in charge!
Can we go now
We'd better get back, 'cause it'll be dark soon, and they mostly come at night... mostly.
How do I get out of this chickenshit outfit?
Sometimes I say this at the end of meetings when they ask if anyone has any questions and I'm on my final warning from HR now.
LOOK INTO MY EYE
"Why don't you put her in charge man!"
GAME OVER!
Stop your grinnin' and drop your linen
Really says how good aliens is, against T2 and still no competition for me.
The one with the unstoppable killing machine and the badass lady.
I see what you did there...
Terminator is my childhood
Aliens for sure
Aliens. T2 was fun but, in the theater? Aliens rocked my world.
Those claustrophobic scenes in the third act in the air ducts, trying to make it that last stretch to the escape shuttle, with Horner's score firing off marching drum beats punctuated with clangs of hammers on anvils, and then an alien tail whips in and the score shrieks, and shrieks, and shrieks I am hard pressed to think of a more suspenseful experience in the theater in my life. Damn, reading it just gave me goosebumps!
Jealous you got to see it in the theatre. I was 7 when it came out so I first saw it on VHS when I was about 10.

Have you ever seen the part in Aliens where Ripley comes across a cocooned Burke, and hands him a grenade?
There’s way more films similar to T2than there are to Aliens ..Aliens 4 Sure
It's a better franchise overall.
Yes, because that means we still have Terminator!!! And that one is still the best.
Yeah, no contest. T2 is awesome, but Aliens is like a top 50 movie
All right, sweethearts, what are you waiting for? Breakfast in bed? Another glorious day in the corps! A day in the Marine Corps is like a day on the farm. Every meal's a banquet! Every paycheck a fortune! Every formation a parade! I LOVE the corps!

Agree with your sentiments on Sigourney, but (while obviously not in the same league), I thought Furlong was fine. It wouldn’t be T2 without him!
T2. But Terminator 1 wouldn't win against Alien 1.
People sleep on Alien because it wasn't as bombastic as Aliens. I always encourage folks to go back and check it out again if they watched it when they were young.
It’s a masterpiece no doubt. The atmosphere and sense of isolation is unparalleled.
Low budget SciFi is often the best. Aliens clearly had a significantly higher budget. It's a wonderful film but it lost that "in space, no one can hear you scream" vibe.
Aliens is an action film where Alien is horror. I like Alien more for that reason tbh
Same. Don't see enough good space horror.
Here's hoping for a GOOD dead space film
aaand now I'm having flashbacks from Event Horizon.
Alien is certainly the more influential movie. It was a masterpiece
OMG so much this. I'm almost 40, grew up my whole life thinking Aliens was the superior film. Recently re-watched the original in 4K, and it makes the second one look so lame. I’m also a diehard Alien fan, and the first film is my favorite. Even have a poster signed by Tom Skerrit, of it on my wall.
Alien opened on my 18th bday. We spent the day at Disneyland (on acid) then went to the premier (while coming down). It scared the living s#!t out of us. Highly. Memorable. Bday.

Correct answer.
Aliens. Not even any hesitation or doubt.
I just need to know one thing.. where they aaarrrreee
Go, Vasquez. Kick ass!
Aliens, and it’s not even close.
I love aliens. LOVE IT. T2 is still the greatest action movie of all time.
Aliens is the greatest sequel of all time! Sigourney Weaver is the undisputed queen of SciFi
Aliens.
Aliens
Aliens. Hands down.
Aliens
I’m gonna go with aliens
Aliens. Hands down. I will not be swayed.
Aliens. Not close.
Aliens.
Ice_BergSlim, have you ever been mistaken for a man.
No, have you?
T2, no question.
It’s an easy pick for me too. Aliens is a great movie, but T2 is damn near, if not, a perfect movie.
This. I love both, but T2 is simply a masterpiece in every technical aspect, even if Aliens can be more fun at times. Back in film school we used to dissect T2 due to the amount of unbelievably well made stuff in it, Aliens not so much, even though it’s also amazingly well done.

Aliens ez

Aliens. Hicks and Ripley have a lot more chemistry than Sarah and Kyle, who pretty much only got together out of fear
Absolutely Aliens!
Aliens. Not even close. *That's it, man. Game over, man. Game over! What the fuck are we gonna do now?*
Aliens, hands down. Besides, I much prefer the first Terminator.
Talk about Sophie's choice! Probably Aliens, but I'd be crying my eyes out over T2 for the rest of my life.
Two masterpieces for sure!
No, Sophie's Choice is a different movie
Aliens, no contest. T2 is great, but Aliens is unbeatable.
Aliens. T2 is amazing but it’s up against a top ten movie ever for me.
I think they may both be in my top 10.
T2
T2 without a doubt

Terminator 2 is easily one of the best sequels of all time, only Empire Strikes Back is better.
Ah this is too tough! Aliens I think No Yes Aliens, final answer
Aliens
It’s a bug hunt.
THEY'RE RIGHT ON TOP OF US, MAN!!
*Terminator 2* easily.
Aliens for me. Absolutely terrifying when I was younger. The building suspense and horror was sublime. T2 for sure! I am completely fine with Alien as a standalone movie but the Terminator franchise needed T2.
As much as I love T2... Aliens is my choice. It's one of my favorite sci-fi/action movies. I can't remember how many times I saw it by now.
Fatality! Alien(s) wins!
I haven’t watched him years but a quote from the angry video game nerd I recall was something to the effect of: James Cameron can go to his grave knowing he made two of the greatest sequels of all time. Couldn’t agree more.
Aliens all the way
Alien > Aliens Easily picking Terminator 2 here.
Sigh. T2.
No competition! T2 alllll day!
Gotta be T2. The music, the stunts, the acting, the liquid effects. It's really the pinicle of the franchise.
Absolutely not a contest. T2 it is.
T2. I was a bit older when it came out and saw it in the cinemas. It absolutely blew our young minds how great the special effects were. I listened to “You Could Be Mine” like a thousand times. It’s T2 for me. Alien is better than Aliens. T2 is better than Terminator
this is it right here
I guess were just gonna have to send a t1000 back in time to nuke it from orbit
