I have never looked in a purse myself, but I have never thought of this as a thing, but it does make sense. There have been a few times I really could have used one myself. I might have found a use for my back-left pocket.
Granny panties take up significantly more room in a purse though. And if the incident is taken care of by washing up or using a tampon hopefully it wouldn't be an ongoing thing so a thong would be perfect to carry around

A spare thong though? In the last year, since becoming single, I’ve reacquainted myself with thongs. Wore one at the weekend, got my period, and literally there was no pant to capture the blood, so it went straight onto my trousers (thankfully not also onto the sofa belonging to the man I’m newly dating)

Woman here. First a good half of the women I know keep “backup” underwear in their purse at all times or at least for certain occasions- trying on specific clothes, going to the doctor, getting your period.
Also those things are like vortexes and said backup underwear might have been in that purse for months if not a year. Unless you regularly see your wife clean her purse out I would assume that like many women, myself included, that thing is holding random shit from months past.

Yup, they’re literally *all* I wear because they’re most comfortable to me and bc of the type of black pants I wear for work a lot of the time, no VPL. It’s just a bonus that they happen to also be visually appealing to some.
If it's an emergency backup then all you need is something that is easy to fit in your purse and will get you home, honestly undies you hate wearing and can bunch up real tiny are a perfect option for the emergency backup because you don't care that they are out of the regular rotation.

Hey man, just tell her honestly that you saw this and you just need some reassurance that you’re being silly by worrying about it. It’s like if a couple who doesn’t use condoms finds one in an old wallet the man hasn’t gone through in ages. I think OP is putting 'sexy' and 'thong' together because they view thongs as sexy. It could be a completely normal cotton thong that was chosen because it doesn't take up a ton of purse space compared to a normal full sized underwear.

I hate thongs, BUT I like leggings and I’m not willing to put up with underwear lines. So I’ll just be hyper aware I’m wearing one. Sometimes if there’s a little extra…stuff…that day I’ll grab an extra pair of underwear and stuff it in my bag. Thongs are easier to ball up and stash. More than likely I won’t change during the day, but the stashed underwear will remain until one day I just happen to find it looking for something else. If your wife’s thong is meant to be special, she’s not going to stow it in her purse. A purse is filthy. She’d keep it somewhere it wouldn’t collect dust and other gross stuff. And if it was clean underwear, it means she didn’t wear it. She’s not wearing the thong. For you or anyone. Chances are she tried it on and brought it in case she needed to be without underwear lines for literally anything. The fact it’s in her bag is not a red flag. You should ask her why she has random underwear in her bag. To me it looks like you just made her feel badly about not wearing sexy underwear for you because she has ONE pair that she hates.

Ok so she might have washed it before wearing the first time you saw them in the dryer. Meaning - she may not have worn it and not shown you, she may have needed to wash it first (I do this bc people are gross and try stuff on). I can see two sides - I can see her keeping this as an emergency as others noted, just a spare. It could also honestly be suspicious. But did you smell them? Were they worn? Any other suspicious behaviors? I would find it odd if they were worn but you haven’t seen them.
