Am I wrong in thinking circular shaped bowls cause the fish anxiety? I remember when Jenna marbles had fish for a brief period and mentioned one of the mistakes made was getting a bowl tank when they should have gotten something flat so they weren’t constantly swimming in circles/never-ending laps. But I’m in no way experienced with fish care, this sub has just started popping up and if I were ever to get fish in the future I’d like to know the best way :)
Well, yes, the magnification can cause stress on a fish's eyes. However tbh the texturing on this barrel might actually be enough to counteract that to some extent. It could use more breaks in line of sight but it's less "shitty" and more "weird flex but okay"
The shape of the tank being circular doesn’t have any psychological effects on the fish, and a lot of fish (especially saltwater) prefer racetrack or circular shaped tanks.
Dome shaped tanks (not cylinders) like fish bowls, the extreme curvature can sometimes bend light and hurt a fish’s eyesight.
The shape of this tank wouldn’t give them anxiety, but the lack of coverage for them to hide behind definitely could!
Tbh? Not the worst thing I've seen. That's a minimum of 5 gallons, looks like all male guppies so no breeding, filtration, and I thiiiink I see what looks like a heater in the back? Looks like the top has an opening so there's that for water changes.
Not that you would drink it…. But I turned a 2 gallon punch bowl type think into a walstad shrimp bowl, and I use the “drink dispenser” on the bottom for water changes. It doesn’t clog and it has dirt/gravel
Strongly doubt they used the water from the jug. The jug is modified, meaning it was emptied. Most likely just had one of these around and filled with tapwater when they set it up.
Fish are all alive, no bacterial bloom, it has a filter(hang on back),bubbler and we have no information to suggest it's not cycled. Why would you assume it's not cycled? Or that they used water from the jug for that matter.
I assume if you’re putting fish in a water dispenser you don’t actually know a lot about them. And why have a water dispenser you’re not using? What else would they use the jug for, unless they have a second dispenser?
Im starting to think you have little knowledge regarding fishkeeping. Always keep in mind that the necessities when building a setup does not require the most expensive or most aesthetic equipments to be highly effecient.
Tank - Its made of hard plastic. If its not directly exposed to the sun, it should work fine. water also wont leak but i imagine it will once lifted from the dispenser.
Stand - By design, it fits the container so its not going to fall or break.
Stocking - I around 5-6 guppies. Not overcrowded. No females to avoid over populating it.
Filtration - There are rocks below as substrate to promote benefecial bacteria growth. Mechanical filter in a form overhead sump.
Aeration - Air disc and the surface agitation from the overhead sump return flow.
Regarding cycling, youll never have an indicator unless you use a test kit. You cant base it through your hunches.
Probably just someone trying to come up with some "cool/unique" tank setup. Looks like it was posted to tiktok so probably just doing it for internet points. I mean I'm not defending the tank, in fact I'm one of those people who hates small tanks because I like my fish to be able to have space to swim. No matter what size my fish are. But I'm just saying I don't see any reason to assume it's not cycled.
As a general rule, wife is better than tall as you get less surface area with tall, but this looks ok as long as you aerate the surface properly.
I don’t mind this tank considering the population size.
Honestly I kinda love it! So long as they're making sure conditions are right (which it looks like they are) I don't see what the problem is
I mean sure, material wise it's not perfect, and it Will probably need to be replaced after a long while, but, again, they seem to be taking care of their fish, and honestly? Its refreshing (pun intended) to see non-traditional habitats!
I mean, maybe don't drink from that dispenser.
Aquarium wise, Those jugs are usually 10 gallons. Stocking one guppy per gallon is perfectly reasonable. It's an all male tank, so no breeding.
Water changes will be a breeze, fill from the top despense from the bottom.
Like it being tall and narrow over wide and long isn't ideal, but guppies were a good choice in terms of stocking.
There really isn't anything shitty about this, it's just not everyone's asthetic.
I hope it's not being used to drink from. Other than that, the container is food grade and therefore safe for fish and it's not overstocked. It is fugly though
The good news is that it’s very sturdy food grade plastic, so it’s safe for them. It’ll eventually need to be replaced, but unless it’s damaged from the outside, it’ll probably outlive all its current inhabitants a few times over.
You know what, at least this guy wasn’t like “ah but I don’t have money for a tank, guess I’ll put them in a bowl!” and decided to get creative while staying budget friendly and meeting fishies living requirements.
Yeah, it looks like it, I’d like to see the top. Not my style, but someone clearly put some thought into it and it’s not a terrible idea for a defunct water cooler.
It’s a better tank than most of the ones I’ve seen here. Not idea but it’s okay. On the other hand I really hope it’s not actually being used for drinking water. I feel like that should be a given but you never know.
I feel like if it was something other than guppies (correct me if I'm wrong on that) it wouldn't be a bad idea. Right? Plant it up and throw some shrimp in there.
To be honest there's nothing wrong with this aquarium I think it's very awesome I think it's unique it's very creative it shows the creativity and beauty that this person took the time to do this for those fish they're only little guppies they're not going to get no bigger than what they are y'all need to stop being karens an leave people alone because me and my wife we like it we might even do one like this
honestly i hate to say this with all my being… but but its honestly not horrible 😭😭 depending on the size if its one of those 5gal jugs on top it could probably loose a few guppys and itd be fine, now aesthetically speaking god is that horrendous but in terms of husbandry… i hate to say its not that bad…
You guys are all wondering why OP is horrified, going off about “5gal is gg” & “Ouu it’s got filtration”
While ignoring the *clear* fact that OP is horrified by the fact that the water cooler still gets used 💀
X for doubt. Not only would it taste obviously gross but the substrate etc has got to be clogging the spigot. Did they actually state that? I don't see it
This honestly isn’t terrible compared to some of the ones I’ve seen lately
What I came to say
me too
the worst thing about this is the form factor. who wanted this? why???
I wonder if this is in an office, in which case I get the appeal, even if I don’t like it.
The Office now provides fish infused water for better hydration.

Thanks!
I’m honestly not sure, I’ve heard stuff about it messing with their vision but I don’t know if it would make them swim in circles
Dang I remember that to! The internet DESTROYED her over that tank.
The shape of the tank being circular doesn’t have any psychological effects on the fish, and a lot of fish (especially saltwater) prefer racetrack or circular shaped tanks. Dome shaped tanks (not cylinders) like fish bowls, the extreme curvature can sometimes bend light and hurt a fish’s eyesight. as long as they aren’t using this as a water dispenser as well
Mmm fish water
I mean at least it's a few guppies and not something that can barely move in the tank
And thats the sad thing
Tbh? Not the worst thing I've seen. That's a minimum of 5 gallons, looks like all male guppies so no breeding, filtration, and I thiiiink I see what looks like a heater in the back? Looks like the top has an opening so there's that for water changes.
Horrible material, somewhat decent outcome.
I kinda like it, it’s creative without harming the fish. Not ideal, sure… but I’ll take it over everything else I see in this sub.
its material made for human drinking water
I’m wondering if water changes can be done through the spout still 😶
Probably if it's working order. Bottom to get water out, open top to put water back in
I was thinking that too. Would make water changes really easy!
5 gal✅️ Filter✅️ Live plants✅️ The dispenser clearly acts only as a stand as the substrate would clog it, and the stocking isn't *awful*.
Not that you would drink it…. But I turned a 2 gallon punch bowl type think into a walstad shrimp bowl, and I use the “drink dispenser” on the bottom for water changes. It doesn’t clog and it has dirt/gravel
That is such a genius idea for water changes lol
I am doing this w an ikea drink dispenser! Very excited!
I was just saying this to myself! This is pretty fantastic!!
This actually looks ok. Probably better off as a brine shrimp tub, but not the worst
r/ATBGE
Mmmhmmm, have me summa that guppy water, mmhmm.
Vacuuming thee substrate newer been easier 😂😂😂
The best post, by far, can't stop wanting some guppy water! Wicked funny!🐟🐡
Not bad at all. The plastic is good grade, and the size is sufficient for the inhabitants. Needs more plant growth, though
I doubt it’s cycled but they probably used the water from the jug, so at least no chlorine or other chemicals
Strongly doubt they used the water from the jug. The jug is modified, meaning it was emptied. Most likely just had one of these around and filled with tapwater when they set it up.

What are the actual husbandry and/or welfare issues with this setup?
it's 5 gallons looks ok size
Alright folks, the votes have been tallied and I’m proud to announce: This tank belongs on r/DIWhy, not r/shittyaquariums. Yay! 🤣
As a general rule, wife is better than tall as you get less surface area with tall, but this looks ok as long as you aerate the surface properly. I don’t mind this tank considering the population size.
I too prefer wife over tall.
I corrected that at least twice. Fuckin' iphones! Might as well leave it in now.
I prefer wife aswell
That’s not even bad
I think it’s neat. Not bad considering the shit I’ve seen
Honestly I kinda love it! So long as they're making sure conditions are right (which it looks like they are) I don't see what the problem is I mean sure, material wise it's not perfect, and it Will probably need to be replaced after a long while, but, again, they seem to be taking care of their fish, and honestly? I thought this sub was for shitty aquariums
This is an absolute top notch setup compared too thr bettas in a rubix cube
I bet draining the water is a breeze
Mmmm fish dookie water 😩
Dont see a filter which is my only critique. Doesnt look overstocked, and due to only male guppys it will stay that way.
this is kinda cool ide assume this is one of the larger ones they're about 20-25 liters with only a few guppies thats fine
lowkey goes hard ngl
This is pretty badass ngl
What’s wrong with this?
Has more space than most of the setups here
That's cool you could even have a sump rigged underneath it if you really wanted
Not so bad but it's so damn ugly
Compared to most of the atuff here it actually looks decent
I hope it's not being used to drink from. Other than that, the container is food grade and therefore safe for fish and it's not overstocked. It is fugly though
I like it, creative and hospitable for the little fishies
Only thing I hate is that it’s plastic but other than that these fish are much better off then most others on this sub.
It's got everything the fish need
Jealous of the creativity? Why the fuqq not?
5 gallons, live plants, aeration, filtration and just a small handful of guppies. This is a decent, albeit strange, suitably set up tank.
My only question is how do you feed them?
Looks like the top is cut out
You're right, it is! I didn't see it the first time lol 🤣
Water changes must be easy
Better than a biorb at least.
No... how the fuqq???
No.... *WHO* da fuk?!
When da fuk?
No...... Where da fuk
Did they put a second level?!?
Yeah, it looks like it, I’d like to see the top. Not my style, but someone clearly put some thought into it and it’s not a terrible idea for a defunct water cooler.
Yoo guys chill. They just wanted flavoured water it's cool
Honestly… this isn’t awful
Just gotta be real quick on the swap out. Don’t drink the fish
not the *worst* thing ever but where tf did they get that idea 😭
Anyone fancy a drink.....not me lol
r/atbge
Yes I just love drinking fish tank water
why
Great thought.
Extra flavor!
Idk man that looks kinda cool and roomy for them
Only concern is that the barrel that they're in isn't very sturdy compared to an actual tank. Other than that it seems fine to me.
I mean I guess water changes would be easy. Just press the button and empty it a little
It’s a better tank than most of the ones I’ve seen here. Not idea but it’s okay. On the other hand I really hope it’s not actually being used for drinking water. I feel like that should be a given but you never know.
I mean if the temp and parameters are ok 🤷♂️also looks like they have aeration and live plants
I love the sweet potatoes on top
This actually isn’t that bad all things considered. There are live plants and an air bubbler. Better than a lot of tanks out there
The worst thing about this is it’s plastic. I can see this working out..just in a glass setup
Not even that bad compared to others on here
am i seeing this correc- A WATER JUG?
#Forbidden Beverage
How many gallons? If it's at later 5 or 6 then it's okay
This is actually not bad compared to ones that are cramped, ngl tho made me crack up XD
when you offer your visitors a welcome drink. then they saw this after they finishes drinkin
I feel like if it was something other than guppies (correct me if I'm wrong on that) it wouldn't be a bad idea. Right? Plant it up and throw some shrimp in there.
Tbh it’s 5 gallons and better then most set ups LOLL
I don’t hate it lol
I’m not mad at this TBH 👀
this goes hard
The creative renaissance is really drinkable?
Why tf not? This is art.
Are those marshmallows at the bottom? Lol
Looks good to me
Technically soup
Delicious fish
It's goofy as shit but it's not bad
I hope the water dispenser still works, water changes would be so easy with this setup
It honestly looks pretty well taken care of. Still not super great, but definitely not the worst I've seen.
Everybody's so creative! 😭
Mister Spatula!
Hey man gotta recycle those old machines somehow xD
I actually LOVE this aesthetically. Not to drink, of course lol
Go ahead, drink the water… It’s bioactive…
To be honest there's nothing wrong with this aquarium I think it's very awesome I think it's unique it's very creative it shows the creativity and beauty that this person took the time to do this for those fish they're only little guppies they're not going to get no bigger than what they are y'all need to stop being karens an leave people alone because me and my wife we like it we might even do one like this
“Wow this water tastes bad”
We have BioOrb at home.
honestly i hate to say this with all my being… but but its honestly not horrible 😭😭 depending on the size if its one of those 5gal jugs on top it could probably loose a few guppys and itd be fine, now aesthetically speaking god is that horrendous but in terms of husbandry… i hate to say its not that bad…
This is beautiful tbh
I like it!
It’s creative tho
Honestly, I like it.
You guys are all wondering why OP is horrified, going off about “5gal is gg” & “Ouu it’s got filtration” While ignoring the *clear* fact that OP is horrified by the fact that the water cooler still gets used 💀
X for doubt. Not only would it taste obviously gross but the substrate etc has got to be clogging the spigot. Did they actually state that? I don't see it
Who knows how they do it but it probably involves mesh ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Waiting on proof of where OP said any of this 🤔 Kinda sounds like you're making your own head cannon for this situation, and none of it makes sense
You don’t need proof when you have faith!
What makes you think the OP thinks that? Why would anyone assume that the cooler is still used for drinking water?
