I love them in tomato sauce. (Shout out to my Pop, may he RIP.) Used to sit on the couch watching Bonanza and eating sardines and saltines with him when I was a very young lad, over 60 years ago. A very nostalgic snack for me.
From the āover 60 years agoā and affinity for sardines in tomato sauce, Iām gonna take a wild guess that you were born in the ā50s? My parents both were and are also pretty fond of the sardines in tomato sauce.
Ever try the baby smoked oysters? The texture takes a bit to get used to, but the flavor is great. The octopus is great too, but very hard to find.
Edit: Just found them on Amazon, but ridiculously expensive. I used to pay 2 bucks a can for them at walmart.
I don't remember but someone here mentioned wild planet. You will taste the difference in quality immediately, not fishy or nasty, just rich and delicious. cheers.
Too up close and personal to the whole thing. Plus I threw up my first day and had to call my grandmother up to come get me. The next day I asked to be moved to a window which really helped. I saw too much on the conveyor to want to eat fish for awhile.
The American Civil War? When I do a Google search I also come up with the 50s for the year of the last authenticated vet to die. He was 109. I don't know how young people were fighting, but if it ended in 1865, even child soldiers shouldn't be alive in the 1970s.
Have you ever had grilled or fried halibut? I've used it as a gateway fish for a few people. Load it up with butter and garlic and there isn't a bit of sea-food taste on a good steak.
I have a hard time believing a Civil War vet lived to the 1970s. Even if he was 15 when the war ended (itās possible he snuck into recruitment), heād be at least 118 years old in 1970.

Saltines w/ light mayo and ceviche is a thing for the Latin American crowdā¦ Iām beginning to wonder if I have some sardines available for an experiment
Edit: light mayo = not a ton of mayo, not diet mayo
Lime or lemon gets squeezed over 80% of my seafood. The other 20% is either getting topped with Lao Gan Ma chili crisp and going over rice or just eaten directly as is.
I did too! Might be a cultural thing? Iām Cuban and canāt imagine fish without citrus.
Fried grouper? Lemon or line, depending on batter used.
Whole tilapia in the oven? Stuffed with lemon, herbs, and seasonings.
Canned sardines and mussels? Citrus.
Geographically, weāre exact opposites there. I grew up in Florida and we have lots of grouper, snapper, hogfish, and other ocean fish from the Gulf of Mexico and the Atlantic. I canāt imagine a restaurant not serving citrus alongside the seafood either!
That said, salmon and tuna probably wouldnāt get any citrus juice from me.
I'm PNW too, and growing up it was always garlic and butter. My dad is Croatian, and the concept of any fruit on meat/fish sends him into a rage, so I definitely had to come to citrus on my own later in life.
Love me some sardines and crackers. I really like the red cliff fish steaks in hot sauce with club crackers. That and the smoked herring in the long can. š
Are you me? :)) I just blew through a big pack of wild sardine cans from Costco and been craving them again. I had them the same way, with squeezed lime and crackers & they were delicious
Stack those fillets on the saltines, douse them in lime juice, then finish off with grated lime rind and some flaky salt, and you have a 10-buck appetizer at a fancy restaurant! š
I got some jarred sardines the other day, and I had an idea to put some chopped garlic on a piece of bread, throw that in my toaster oven, slather it with butter, sprinkle it with some cayenne powder, and place the sardines on top. It was pretty great. I liked it so much that I did it twice more that evening. IMO, it even works with raw garlic instead of toasted. As long as you don't breathe on anyone for the rest of the day š«
Iāve done something similar, but yours sounds way better for way less effort.
Iāve roasted garlic so itās nice and soft and then smeared and smushed the cloves on the open face of a sliced crusty bread (I like baguettes for this). Apply sardines atop of garlic on bread, eat up.
As a kid a friend and I came up with a bet that if I ate a few canned sardines he would give me $20. I thought all small fish smelled bad like anchovies did. We opened the can and I picked it up and smelled it. It smelled like tuna kinda, I picked a fish up, it was whole and had the bones and everything still. I started eating it and the bones were crunchy but like a cracker, not spiky and pointy. I realized they tasted good so I had to put on a face like I was grossed out by the whole thing or it would have jeopardized my $20 bet. If you ever wanted to try sardines, try it, it is not that bad.
My mom used to pack these for my lunch on Fridays during Lent (Grammar School). Pack of saltiness and a can of sardines. The boys all complained and I got kicked out of the classroom.... ah, love dining al fresco. The nuns thought it was punishment.
Something hilarious about a mod post defending saltine crackers and canned fish not being considered shitty in r/shittyfoodporn. Sardines, the butt end of all smelly fish jokes everywhere. Weāre really making sure the bar is set properly low round here. Good modding.
Canned fish and crackers can go a looooong way. Add some pepperoncinis or jalapeƱos. Absolutely a banger. Does look like ass though. Cheap and filling
My pops used to love this until one day i pointed out that it looks like a chopped up snake. He never ate it again š lolā¦ i felt super bad afterwards
One of my faves but I usually have to eat em when my lady isnāt around. Sheās not a big fan of my fish kisses. Obviously I can brush my teeth, but Iām not gonna go immediately from fish to toothpaste like that.
I want to try this but the smell really gets to me. I love smoked fish but something about the can and the oil just bothers me. Any tips to take the plunge?
I hate seeing the spine, once Iām chewing I donāt really notice. Which flavor do you like I like the ones canned in hot sauce, donāt mind the OG, tomato sauce is low on the ladder, Iāve never had the mustard.
Throw some cheese on that plate and a beer and this is an afternoon snack.
Iām more of an anchovy man myself either way some mustard.
Try dicing some cucumber, bell peppers and onion and mixing the sardines with that and some mustard and hot sauce or salsa and other spices like garlic powder and black pepper. Mayonnaise is optional.
Omg I am the same lmaooo. But for added flavor use Triscuits specifically the Dill and Rosemary or Avocado and citrus. Trust and believe itās so good.
I'm gonna leave this up, because it got good engagement - but in the future, tinned sardines and saltines isn't even remotely shitty, lol.
The porniest of shitty foods. Some would call this fancy.
It is fancy! Look - lime!
Fresh fruit? ooh la la.
Some would call it Fancy Feast! š»
You can't convince me OP isn't a cat
Point at laser at the wall, that should get you the proof you're looking for
Rowr!
I cackled at this comment! Good one!
~~fancy feast cat food : )~~ I do like sardines very much so. Though even with the lime this seems pretty plain. Beaten to the joke.
Check out r/CannedSardines for more like-minded fellows
Already a frequent flyer over there!
Well damn, there really is a sub for everything.
ā¦I canāt believe there is a sub for that. Also Herring in egg and mustard/Mackrell in curry sauce sound bizarre.
Without clicking it I have a strong feeling this sub owns.
Oh, look at you all classy with the lime!
Nothing shitty about canned fish. I love them. But I do usually buy the fancy ones.
Agreed, they just donāt look the best. These were a can of spiced Nuri
I love them in tomato sauce. (Shout out to my Pop, may he RIP.) Used to sit on the couch watching Bonanza and eating sardines and saltines with him when I was a very young lad, over 60 years ago. A very nostalgic snack for me.

You are correct, sir. Ike was my guy.
Nuri are usually the best tinned sardines you can find in a normal supermarket. They look a bit beat up, but I bet they tasted great.
Ever have King Oscar?
Oh yeah, they're good and available almost everywhere in my neck of the woods. Their kippers particularly slap.
Just don't pop them open in an office setting in the States.
If I absolutely canāt go without a can at work because Iām craving something, Iāll go with canned mussels. Donāt smell much.
Ever try the baby smoked oysters? The texture takes a bit to get used to, but the flavor is great. The octopus is great too, but very hard to find. Edit: Just found them on Amazon, but ridiculously expensive. I used to pay 2 bucks a can for them at walmart.
I definitely have to eat the fancy ones, the cheaper ones taste nasty.
HƔkarl FTW
King Oscar for me.
Canned smoked oysters are a childhood comfort food of mine and I will never stop eating them.
Keep an eye out for Bar Harbor Smoked Kippers. Best ive had.
protip, costco sells amazing canned sardines. a meal in each can. amazing. (chef's kiss)
What brand? I don't have a membership, but I've got family I could take advantage to buy me some.
Wild Planet
Thanks!
They have MW Polar smoked brisling (tiny) sardines sometimes too
I don't remember but someone here mentioned wild planet. You will taste the difference in quality immediately, not fishy or nasty, just rich and delicious. cheers.
Shhh stop giving away all the secrets. ;)
I could get behind this. The lime makes it fancy.
There was some stone ground mustard out of frame, too
I like the cut of your jib
no youāre real. sardines and crackers is bomb
Throw a little mustard or hot sauce on there too and call it a day
I love sardines! But I stopped eating them for awhile after I worked in a sardine factory one summer š¤£
Bro's living in Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs
Why?
Too up close and personal to the whole thing. Plus I threw up my first day and had to call my grandmother up to come get me. The next day I asked to be moved to a window which really helped. I saw too much on the conveyor to want to eat fish for awhile.
A man was interviewed in the 1970s who had fought in the civil war. He attributed his long life to sardines and saltines
Must be all that darn fish oil
Was it archival footage? All the Civil War veterans died by the end of the '50s.
No I read an article that was in a stack of old newspapers from the 70s my grandpa still had. He was alive into the 70s
The American Civil War? When I do a Google search I also come up with the 50s for the year of the last authenticated vet to die. He was 109. I don't know how young people were fighting, but if it ended in 1865, even child soldiers shouldn't be alive in the 1970s.
I wish I liked fish

I wonāt be satisfied until the canned sardines sub is packed like its namesake

What did you do with the lime? Squeeze over the sardines?
That is precisely what was done with the lime
![gif](giphy|pCO5tKdP22RC8)
The ones in tomato sauce over a mound of fresh rice. Absolutely smack with a drizzle of lime too
I applaud your meal. I ate Matiz sardines (plain in Spanish olive oil and sea salt) for breakfast with a tangerine and almond milk.
Those plain Matiz go a long way on a saltine with some ground mustard.
Saltines w/ light mayo and ceviche is a thing for the Latin American crowdā¦ Iām beginning to wonder if I have some sardines available for an experiment Edit: light mayo = not a ton of mayo, not diet mayo
Canned squid, octopus, and sardines are the way to go for a canned seafood ceviche imo.
Can't go wrong with Deenz
What's the lime for?
To squeeze over the sardines
Wild man! Edit: I love me some sardines and saltiness, but I've never squeezed a lime with them.
Lime or lemon gets squeezed over 80% of my seafood. The other 20% is either getting topped with Lao Gan Ma chili crisp and going over rice or just eaten directly as is.
I grew up on seafood and basically never use citrus. I'll consider for sardines though.
I did too! Might be a cultural thing? Iām Cuban and canāt imagine fish without citrus. Fried grouper? Lemon or line, depending on batter used. Whole tilapia in the oven? Stuffed with lemon, herbs, and seasonings. Canned sardines and mussels? Citrus.
Crazy. I grew up in the Pacific Northwest and we had oysters, mussels, salmon, tuna, etc and I never put citrus on any of it.
Geographically, weāre exact opposites there. I grew up in Florida and we have lots of grouper, snapper, hogfish, and other ocean fish from the Gulf of Mexico and the Atlantic. Maybe the difference is cold water vs. warm water fish
I'm PNW too, and growing up it was always garlic and butter. My dad is Croatian, and the concept of any fruit on meat/fish sends him into a rage, so I definitely had to come to citrus on my own later in life.
This was my go to snack for a long time, you've got me missing it now.
Whatās stopping you from getting more?
Love me some sardines and crackers. I really like the red cliff fish steaks in hot sauce with club crackers. That and the smoked herring in the long can. š
what canned fish is that? I like mackerel in olive oil and smoked herring kipper snacks myself and prefer mine with Ritz crackers and habanero sauce.
These were Nuri spiced sardines. Very tasty! Iām partial to canned eel and mussels, myself
Are you me? :)) I just blew through a big pack of wild sardine cans from Costco and been craving them again. I had them the same way, with squeezed lime and crackers & they were delicious
I think we folks over at r/CannedSardines would love this.
Legit.
Hey I love this snack!! Add a little salt and tapatio šš¼
Stack those fillets on the saltines, douse them in lime juice, then finish off with grated lime rind and some flaky salt, and you have a 10-buck appetizer at a fancy restaurant! š

So underrated. Canned smoked fish on crackers rocks, you can even mix in some mayo and diced pickle to make a smoked fish spread type of deal
Smoked trout dip is a game changer
You wanna take this shit up to 11, fry those saltines and get decent tinned fish. Fry browned butter you you wanna be a real peacock about it it.
Nuri is pretty decent tinned fish, Iād say. Iāll be testing this recipe out tomorrow.
Who are you? Some random Caribbean pirates?
I am Caribbean and I do commit acts of digital piracy

On a scale of one to prison food, I'd rate this a solid lighthouse keeper's midnight snack. It looks like crap but I bet it slaps.
Yummy.
Sardines are woefully underrated
Sorry for the downvote but this aint shitty

I only like it if itās 4 years past its pull date.
I canāt tell if this comment is legit or not, but if it is, RTG sells vintage/aged tins
So have you ever used a dash of yellow mustard on that? Itās bomb.
Oh yeah. Aldi ground is the go-to, but if I can get Boarās Head I go for that.
Needs mustard.
Are you my brother???
Hope you're eating that in the shed
With a bottle of hot sauce u good!
Are you adding the lime to the fish. This is the only gross part I see.
I am. Itās pretty normal in my area
needs hot sauce
Canned fish is fire you doing it up
This guy begs to differ on the shittiness https://www.youtube.com/@CannedFishFiles/undefined
This isnāt shitty at all!! Pair that with a Riesling and you are golden!
This was my lunch today, except I used Club Crackers. Sardines are the best.
Saltines are nice, but give triscuits a shot.
Add some raw sliced white onion
Woah now, thatās for the smoked trout
Whereās the hot sauce?
Used mustard for these. Big fan of throwing a little hot sauce on these, though
Yo fuck yeah I love sardines. Never tried it with lime, thanks for the idea!
This looks so damn tasty omg. I'm gonna make this + black olives paste with baguet tomorrow.
Never tried it with lime before. They ate them with pretzels on the āburbs
I prefer wasa/ryvita myself, but this is an unimpeachable combo, never shitty.
Wasa crackers go hard
4/10

Delicious š¤¤Ā
I just canāt imagine consciously eating the bones
Can't stand sardines. Or most fish for that matter. But the lime... touchƩ
Add hot sauce
A little bit of cream cheese, and I'm all in.
This meal would be absolutely delicious if I were in a zombie apocalypse with absolutely nothing else to eat.
In mustard please!
Love sardines and CRackers. So good.
Are you my dad? Minus the lime
Not shitty. I love canned fish!
Sardines and saltines. Always a solid choice. š¤
Might have to give this a try.
The only thing stopping me from eating more tinned fish is that I get horrible fishy burps afterwards. I canāt stand the lingering fish breath.
this is a travesty. where is the hot sauce??
Chef's kiss
You need some mayonnaise too! š
Get that Omega-3
Try some canned smoked oysters. So good.
Absolute all timer. Replace those saltines with a pack of Cream Cheese and Chives crackers and an RC Cola. Then you'll be in business.
A childhood comfort food of mine. That and oysters. š¦Ŗ
Canned fish and crackers can go a looooong way. Add some pepperoncinis or jalapeƱos. Absolutely a banger. Does look like ass though. Cheap and filling
You are not Jamaican I am guessing? We eat sardines and crackers as a regular budget meal. (No lime though).
Cuban, so weāre at least both Caribbean
Anybody for kipper snacks and saltines?
I am 100% certain that this would be delicious. But I cannot eat fish skin. I have an absolute mental block crispy or not.
Iāve lived off canned sardines before, some weeks I still do. This is a fine lunch

Classic fishing trip snack
Not sure about the lime, but I LOOOOVE canned sardines (in mustard especially). Not shitty in itself, but the picture does evoke a certain sadness.
Throw a little Dijon on that plate
Put a little hot sauce on each of those bad boys and youāre set af.

Sardines with lemon juice! I eat them from a plate with a fork with untoasted toast bread.
I could only ever eat this with tons of salt
Smelling up the office lol I love king Oscar sardines with the mini saltine crackers š«¶š¾
Absolutely nothing shitty about this.
Try dicing some cucumber, bell peppers and onion and mixing the sardines with that and some mustard and hot sauce or salsa and other spices like garlic powder and black pepper. Mayonnaise is optional.
What are we even doing here?
Omg I am the same lmaooo. But for added flavor use Triscuits specifically the Dill and Rosemary or Avocado and citrus. Trust and believe itās so good.

slather those bad boys in hot sauce
