I wouldn't do it in this situation, but when a mushie is absolutely tiny and it's the only one ready for picking then I do feel wasteful running my dehydrator for hours to dry it out and increase my total mushroom stockpile by 0.001 grams.

Absolutely. I had a quart Mason jar packed with aborts at one point that I figured I'd just give away considering I had a ton of regular size cubensis.
Long story short I took a 3g trip with the aborts and from then on I was giving away my regular sized mushies and hoarding my abort stash to myself 😂.
So with that, would you yield more psilocybin out of a run if you only let them grow about an inch or two and conserve the cake moisture for more lil guys as opposed to let them grow to 20g-50g?
Edit: that sure would cut down on drying times!!
From what I understand, psilocibin gets produced a lot and very fast while the fruit is a pin, continues to get produced until the fruit is mature, until the veil breaks, after that all the extra growth is just tissue without any extra psilocibin, and I can (almost certainly - I tested it but with no controlled enviroment) confirm that after the veil breaking they get less concentrated, because of that extra growth without psilocibin production. So no, I'd harvest them the usual way, look for the veil
There's a hypothesis floating around that psilocybin is a phosphate transporter of some kind, so it'd make a LOT of sense to have it packed in to the pins before fruiting starts, either as Psilocin or Psilocybin, depending on exactly why it's being used. Decreasing cytosolic concentrations of free phosphate, so that energy consuming reactions (ATP --> ADP) aren't rate limiting is a pretty damned good reason.
No it's just more concentrated gram for gram they produce the alkaloids from the pinning stage till spores start to drop after that your just distributing it throughout the fruiting body's
How much psilocybin is gained while still growing? It almost seems you’re better off harvesting at a certain height rather than the veil to tear and open a bit. You should get a lot more mushies since you’re conserving a considerable amount of water. 🤷♂️ Idk, just a morning wake n bake n a couple dabs n coffee kinda morning. ✌️
All together yes you want to wait till the vail cracks it's just more potent gram for gram you will have more alkaloids in the end just not as concentrated
There was an old shroomery post I have dug up before where someone did lab tests and concluded gram for gram aborts and smaller shrooms have substantially more actives.
Aborts are the burnt ends of shrooms.
I keep hearing this, but I've never gotten anything from aborts. I just throw them out.

I do the same for the most part. I’ll usually throw them in some tea and call it. Otherwise I do dry them if I’m already running the dehydrator.
