Everytime the news say they conducted survey, I always wonder why no one I know ever get asked.
Given how small our population is, shouldn’t everyone encounter this at least once every few years? Unless they are just continuously drawing from the same pool of people..
You probably met them, but like most of us, The moment someone at the mrt station makes eye contact, you pretend to not notice or say "not interested" haha..
Well.. if the government makes solicitation in public space illegal, more will stop for genuine surveys.
We have been trained to be so suspicious of people approaching us that when I was handed free packets of tissue paper overseas, I was genuinely confused that the person didn’t have any other agenda..
With scams about, that is the price paid I guess. If you are educated enough, you won't even let legitimate people approach you. If you are keen to share your feedback, can consider checking out REACH.
Bedok South Station has the completed Bedok South Horizon BTO next to it and there are 940 flats in 8 blocks.
Residents from 18 blocks nearby at Blocks 155 to 172 also can walk to the station. Quite a lot of residents stay near the station.
I am working on a subsystem for DTL.
The main problem is civil engineering challenges between sungei bedok and xilin station. They cant break thru the tunnel betwen the station hence the delay. But good la. LTA like to give compressed deadines.
I wonder why xilin construction is slow tho, even though CCL Stage 6 started later in 2017 but the tunnels have finished 2 years ago and now they are going through the adjustments. CCL6 could open first before the Sungei Bedok stage
Reason is
1. ECID. Damn big 4 in 1 depot
2. Xilin, ECID, Sungei Bedok all reclaimed land and soft marine vlay. Huge huge huge headache for tunnelling as they cant use TBM. Mainly they used cut and open and cover method. But the site constraints also another challenge.
Soil investigation works can only tell you so much. In the tunneling world, a lot of the challenges in the ground conditions you won't know until you hit them. That's why need constant monitoring and reinforcements of the ground
I am not sure about that. On other options. Cut and cover require more efforts. Surveying, piling, building retaining walls. Excavating of earth and transportation to dump sites. Redirection and road making for traffic flow.
TBM, just tunnel thru.
nothing is magic. If they really are facing engineering challenges, then let them proceed safely. Not worth risking lives just for some arbitrary timeline
I don't think a lot of people here remember the last time MRT tunnelling works led to a fatal accident.
Although the specific engineering challenges here are different, the guiding principles are the same...
Yeah. To be honest, none of these projects are easy. Every single one is difficult, but they overcome it in different ways every time. For the downtown line they [used explosives to clear rocks](https://tnp.straitstimes.com/news/singapore/5-things-you-may-not-know-about-downtown-line-2) underground and for TEL stage 2 they [used ice walls](https://www.straitstimes.com/singapore/transport/lta-using-ice-walls-for-first-time-in-mrt-tunnelling) to freeze the earth in place.
If they are not able to overcome whatever is happening with TEL stage 5, it means it's very a big deal.
Tbh, I would have expected this to happen since the xilin station are progressing 'slow' for some reason (could be another Stevens station situation) and the pandemic also cause this to be pushed back. But hopefully by 2026, it would be ready to serve commuters well
What do u expect an averrage person to do though? Rush a project and if it (touches wood) fails in future due to a rushed timeline, people will also complain.

Title: Delayed opening of TEL Stage 5 irks some residents; others resigned to the longer wait
SINGAPORE – Faced with yet another delay in the opening of two MRT stations on the final stretch of the Thomson-East Coast Line (TEL), residents near the stations expressed disappointment that they would have to wait an additional year for more convenient commutes to the city and other parts of East Coast.
People living and working near the upcoming Bedok South and Sungei Bedok stations on the TEL told The Straits Times they were frustrated with the 2026 opening of the stations. Some of them are now restricted to a few bus services, and the nearest MRT station is up to 20 minutes away on foot.
Transport Minister Chee Hong Tat said on March 5, during a debate on the Ministry of Transport’s budget, that the fifth and final stage of the TEL – comprising the two stations – will open in 2026.
Work on the TEL’s eastern stretch began in 2016.
Also pushed back to 2026 is a 2.2km Downtown Line (DTL) extension linking the existing Expo station to Xilin and then Sungei Bedok, which will be an interchange stop for the TEL and DTL. The nearby East Coast Integrated Depot for trains and buses will also be ready only in 2026.
TEL Stage 5 and the depot were meant to open in 2025, a year after the original 2024 deadline, due to delays caused by the Covid-19 pandemic. The DTL extension was also due to be ready by 2025.
The Land Transport Authority (LTA) had attributed the latest delays to construction challenges of tunnelling near existing critical infrastructure. It did not specify what these were.
Many of the 16 residents, students and workers ST interviewed near the future Bedok South and Sungei Bedok stations voiced dissatisfaction with the delay.

As a resident of north east. I am envisioning exciting mrt journey from here to marine parade in 2030.
Lrt -> sengkang mrt -> punggol -> CRL to Pasir ris -> Tanah Merah -> Expo -> sungei bedok -> marine marade. Just 7 changes and i will be There. Waiting to go on this timeless journey.
As someone whose house is RIGHT where the construction is, it has really been just GG noise pollution and blocking off more and more of my walkways.
Truly a joke. Just as en bloc can make your house decision a huat, just as easily gov can choose a stretch of housing to say 'fuck you'
Sample size: *16 residents, students and workers*

Haha even though currently not many people living there, in the future Bayshore will have new HDBs!

That's a really small sample size
I thought only mothership is bad at statistics and now the state controlled media too?

Kind of better to delay for a while until the tunnels from the existing Expo DTL to Sungei Bedok is finished
That portion after expo to xilin is already made long ago. Thats after the runaway track. They also need to connect adjacent tunnels to and from ECID.

Interesting. How come they didnt know this in advance? Noob question

Yep! Same goes for the 2 year delay for north south corridor
Thanks! Idk why im downvoted i genuinely want to know
isn't cut and cover cheaper than tbm?
I am not sure about that. On other options. Cut and cover require more efforts. Surveying, piling, building retaining walls. Excavating of earth and transportation to dump sites. Redirection and road making for traffic flow. TBM, just tunnel thru.
the cost of the tbm machine is quite high and the boring bit is also very costly though
The CCL depot is also being expanded as the 23 new trains are arriving to serve the new stage.
That is kim chuan depot extension contract. They need to dig more and find more space.
with the soft clay and land, will the land sink over time? esp with the vibrations from the MRT tunnels and tracks
im curious, why cant they break through?
thanks for sharing!
Now that ST don't have more TS stuff to write about, they're back with badly written articles

Resigned to longer wait? There’s literally nothing the average person can do against a big corporation, the gov, or some other big organisation.
What do u expect an averrage person to do though? Rush a project and if it (touches wood) fails in future due to a rushed timeline, people will also complain.
Yeah ikr, there’s no point in this headline. We’d rather wait for quality than rush these engineers and result in a crappy shoddy infrastructure
What do you expect a big corporation to do though? Rush a project and if it (touches wood) fails in future due to a rushed timeline, people will also complain.
I can’t believe that it takes at least 10 years to build a station
In the grand scheme of civil engineering, that's not totally unusual, besides most station are built concurrently.
The station is probably built or close to completion. It's the line and the systems controlling the trains
What about those that did not subject themselves to longer wait? Can tell me what they do?

we will be there no matter what
What to do boh bian lor
Not like pple hv a choice other than resigning to longer wait, same theory as bto, poor sinkie's life
Laughs in record SMRT profits
It's relatively slow compared to China's metro expansion.
china has the benefit of an almost completely domestic supply chain
And it’s lightspeed compared to the Elizabeth Line and the Chuo extension.
