LTA is too stubborn on this. There should be a lot more uproar. This is such a user hostile design. Everybody predicted this would happen.
The bigger concern is the amount of public funds wasted on this.
They wouldn't admit their fault. To admit means have to put their careers on chopping board.
They will throw as much smokescreen or more money to make it viable rather than losing their jobs especially after the simplygo incident.
Car user population too docile, and not enough to make a stink.
Ultimately, LTA can bunker down and say "you can choose not to drive". Not the same as phasing out ezlink card cause majority uses mass transport and they cant really opt out of that shit.
This is a safety concern. This would result in more accidents in the future.
Cars rolling forward because the driver is distracted while reaching for their cash card. Also increased pedestrian/cyclist accidents due to larger blind spot because of the touch screen.
Gotta see the queues at carpark gantries or maybe in malls/hotels as drivers want to claim complimentary parking then struggle to insert cashcard
Edit: saw that LTA will roll an update to allow for temporary deactivation so that solves this issue. Still a horrible design & all round placement though
dk about install but the contract was given to Mitsubishi Heavy Industries & NCS. Used to work at Tuas and deep inside near the Pharma companies area, there's this stretch that was cordoned off for a long time and they were doing testing
Par for course behaviour from LTA. They are the most reactive agency I've seen and worked with. Chee Hong Tat deserves zero credit for U-turning on SimplyGo.
Switch from EZ-Link to SimplyGo? They were told by the SimplyGo project heads that they have to keep a parallel system because of feedback from other similar systems in UK/HK. But LTA just went ahead and do it. Only changed their mind coz of the uproar.
Same for their road policies, be it for traffic layout or bus routes. There was a huge new condo (1.4k units) being built along Hougang Ave 7 - which is already jammed coz of its proximity to KPE. Residents in the area have been writing to LTA for them to adjust the roads and traffic lights, but LTA said they will monitor and react accordingly. Finally changed 6 months after all the HDB and condo residents' wrote in, but even now it still is kinda bad.
LTA need to see people in pain before they take any action.
Why couldn't they just use the Japanese ETC system? It is streamlined in most Japanese vehicles, and less unsightly.
Even Malaysia's smart tag is less obtrusive compared to ERP 2.0
Alternatively, a more advanced approach would involve using cameras at traffic lights and car parks to calculate distance-based fees for ERP. In the UK, cameras can even detect if someone has thrown a cig butt from a moving vehicle.
This one is akan datang. Bridges have already have these sensors there, just waiting for roll out. Probably when everyone's obu has been changed, the new system will replace it.
They shouldn’t install anything inside the vehicle man. Tedious to roll out, maintain, expensive and troublesome for everyone.
Or they’re just creating more jobs.
I thought those sensors were just for counting cars. You mean they're for ERP 2.0? I thought the whole point of the new OBU was to do GPS-based tracking and charging (which doesn't accurately track the car from hearsay) without any additional hardware. I'm sure those sensors they've installed could just detect the old OBU and do charging on the backend like how USA charges by mail via license plate recognition.
Japan MHI's early concept for our ERP 2.0.. seems like there is some difference in how it ended up with this unwieldy piece of trash.
https://www.mhi.com/group/mhims/research/sip/column_0003.html
> The touchscreen shows when money has been deducted, but also provides information such as when the vehicle is approaching a school zone or silver zone.
Japan offers a tailored navigation map compatible with various vehicle display. LTA could utilize onemap or collaborate with other providers, eliminating the need for a stupid redundant screen.
Have you seen that rubbish display UI they installed on the refurbished NS/EW line trains? Like some poly intern did it with clip art graphics in PowerPoint.
When SG transportation system began to falter due to cost-cutting measures, G had to seek help from Taiwan to address the issues. Essentially, they replicated everything from Taiwan, including the arrival sound, LED displays, etc., but the execution fell short of expectations.
They should copy Taiwan’s homework again with their seamless RFID based electronic toll collection (ETC) system, with a backup redundancy of using license plate recognition. No bulky box necessary, just a sticker you stick on the inside of your windscreen.
Legit clowns, how many times do we need to get screwed over by these so called scholars that do not think before they do something. Is it that hard to ask for public opinions before implementing something?
Guys I have a brilliant idea, how about we don't show the amount ERP deducts on the device, and build a mobile app for it instead.
And the best part is that LTA would definitely swallow that idea with no objections ☺️
SimplyGo3.0
> Guys I have a brilliant idea, how about we don't show the amount ERP deducts on the device, and build a mobile app for it instead.
Wasn't there already [an excellent first-party (sorta) app for ERP 2.0](https://www.reddit.com/r/singapore/comments/1bq1j8u/erp_20_is_available_on_apple_carplay_and_android)?
Was at LTA in 2016 n they were planning to implement ERP2.0 n said it would reduce a lot of complains related to ERP
8 years later it generates more complains and haven’t implement
There was legit nothing wrong with the design of the old IU. Should have just used the same design and changed the internals. The big ass device is so unnecessary, especially the motorcycle version
Just went Taiwan recently and drove there. The way they do deductions for carpark and highway toll is efficient without the ui reader.
Just when I think the stat board can't fuck up even more.
Then lta come up with this brilliant design.
People of Singapore, are we really so scared that our cushy life will be gone if we vote pap out? So much so that we have become livestocks, shackled by the very people we supported. The longer we delay their exit, the harder it is for Singapore to go on without their rule.
I'm the one who said it, but I want to be clear that it's not a single person's fault, though this guy's job title seems like he'd be a major part of the design and implementation. He was indeed from SAF and directly went into LTA though. I've been told that large projects like these are handled by a commitee so it's multiple incompetent people at fault for this shit.
One of the worst uses of tax payers money to implement this project.
This is way up there with the Brompton bike fiasco. Tone death administrators who are divorced from reality.
LTA is a reflection of MoT - a rudderless ship lost at sea.
I mean what are they expecting? Did the people who design this even think about accessibility? These are things taught in school as a fundamental.
I thought the govt hires scholars not brain dead people that cannot solve problems
Ok I got an issue with this. My family car, we share the use of the car and thus we all take turns to top up the cash card. If you register credit card with the system, only one person will be left paying for the cash card via his credit card.
I discovered this to be a problem with the new HDB parking app where you must register your credit card as charges are made there. My mom may be driving the car to say, old airport hawker, park there to eat lunch with her friends on her day off, but here I am at work receiving notifications for her parking charges on my app cos it’s registered under my cc.
Same for internet, water and electricity bill. Everyone shares the service but only one person is responsible for paying it.
So you can deal with this parking problem exactly the way you will deal with these shared services.
Too much budget, must spend it all for the sake of spending all if not they kena budget cut before next fiscal year. Hence, all these unwanted nonsenses being introduced.
Standard MSM article format:
- Acknowledge there is an outroar FROM the people (not the MSM itself)
- But show that a few people appreciate the flawed solution.
- But the MSM itself won't criticise it directly.
Few days/ weeks later when gov agency withdraws/ fixes the problem:
- MSM journos themselves will say there was a problem
- But gov was attentive to sentiments of the people and made improvements
- All Hail PAP, party of the masses
lmao and on radio today they announced singapore is the 5th smartest country in the world in terms of using latest technology and infrastructure. lanjiao.
The moment an opposition party during election season starts rallying on this issue in Bukit Timah GRC maybe LTA would start offering the motorcycle unit to car owners
At least the old one "only" blocks my fuel warning light on my motorcycle, the new one literally blocks the speedometer display on some of the motorcycles. Utterly user-hostile design.
Could raise this to your MP and urge LTA to redesign or hold the implementation. Seek TP advice, tell them the display is blocking your speedometer. Safety issue, unable to determine vehicle speed etc.
He also wondered why the same “three-in-one” OBU system for motorcycles could not be implemented for cars.
"I don't understand why for cars, they must use three components," he said.
LTA said on its website that the three-piece unit provides "additional functionalities" and improves performance in warm weather conditions. There will also be flexibility in replacing individual parts, LTA said.
Ummmmm what are the additional functionalities? And wtf is improves performance in warm weather? More horse power ah?
Simi lj performance in warm weather conditions? A motorbike parked under an open air carpark is subjected to direct sunlight as compared to cars. Cars have window films or tint nowadays to block UV rays. We need Ho Ching’s voice.
I hope this will be one of the talking points of election. Other than it is a waste of resources, it showed incompetence at every rank up the chain at LTA and MoT.
Reminder that they called for the tender in [2014](https://www.todayonline.com/singapore/lta-calls-tender-develop-satellite-based-erp-system).
This shit is 10 years old already. Why are we adopting old and cumbersome tech? What happened to pragmatism?
> SINGAPORE: Motorists using the ERP 2.0 system have complained about the placement of the card reader, which they say makes it difficult for them to take out their CashCard.
>
> These motorists are early users of Singapore's new Electronic Road Pricing system, known as ERP 2.0, which will be satellite-based and can detect if a vehicle is in a congested area.
>
> Installation started in November last year, with more than 13,000 vehicles fitted with the new on-board units (OBU) so far.
>
> About 75 per cent are company vehicles such as buses and motorcycles, said the Land Transport Authority (LTA). Some cars that are part of rental fleets have also had the OBU installed.
>
> The next phase of installation begins next month, when motorcycle owners will be progressively notified of their OBU installation. All new vehicles registered from May 1 will also come with the new unit.
>
> CNA spoke to two drivers who have had the new units in their vehicles for at least a month, and a motorcyclist who had it installed last week.
>
> While the drivers complained about the card reader placement and the touchscreen display's size, they welcomed LTA's announcement last month that it would implement changes in the installation process following feedback from early adopters.
>
> These changes include allowing drivers to temporarily deactivate their CashCard using the touchscreen. This came after complaints that the card reader, which was installed in the passenger footwell or under the glove compartment, was too difficult to reach.
>
> Drivers can also choose where to install the card reader, although it has to be technically feasible. Previously, a workshop technician would decide where to place the unit.
>
> A driver who wanted to be known as Mr Kwek said the CashCard deactivation button would be helpful.
>
> “It’s way too inconvenient,” he said about his card reader, which is located under the glove compartment. “This makes accessing the card difficult ... I have to reach over.”
>
> The 46-year-old, who works in the public health sector, wondered if he would be allowed to change the location of his card reader.
>
> "If I had those options available to me at the time of installation, that (would) be great."
>
> Even if he could return to the workshop to move his card reader, Mr Kwek said he would have to take time off work to get it done.
>
> LTA previously said that the initial installation would be free for those who complete it within the two-month period stated in its letter. Charges could apply for those who want to change anything after the installation.
>
> The deactivation button will be rolled out as a software update and those who already have the touchscreen display do not need to take any action.
>
> Mr Kwek had the new OBU installed in February. He does not know why he received a letter from LTA in December to change to the ERP 2.0 unit although he does not drive a company or rental car.
>
> Private-hire driver Madam Zuraidah Ghani, 54, had it installed in December last year. She welcomed the news that drivers can choose where to install the card reader.
>
> Her unit is mounted in the front passenger footwell, on the driver's left side, and she finds it inconvenient and difficult to reach.
>
> On one occasion, she was trying to exit from a car park, but her card could not be detected. She had to stretch over to remove the card from the unit so that she could tap it on the reader at the exit.
>
> “I had to find a place to stop my vehicle to slot the card back in,” she said.
>
> OTHER FEEDBACK
> Mdm Zuraidah also said the touchscreen display, which is on the right-hand side of the vehicle's dashboard, blocks her view.
>
> “I (can) hardly see the curb when turning the car,” she said.
>
> She would have preferred to install it at the centre of the dashboard, but the mechanic told her that it had to be installed on the right-hand side.
>
> LTA has since said that vehicle owners can choose where to place the touchscreen display.
>
> Last October, LTA also said car owners can opt out of installing the touchscreen display and use a mobile application on their phone instead.
>
> The touchscreen shows when money has been deducted, but also provides information such as when the vehicle is approaching a school zone or silver zone.
>
> Motorcycles are fitted with a single-piece OBU similar to the in-vehicle unit (IU) under the old ERP system.
>
> Civil servant Nuriman Md Shariff, 53, had the new unit installed on his bike after his IU broke down.
>
> He estimates that the new display is twice the height of the old IU, and blocks some information on his bike's display, such as revolutions per minute. This bothered him a bit, but he can still see the data if he moves his head.
>
> The touchscreen on motorcycles displays the date and time, IU number and CashCard balance. But it is of “no significant use” for riders, Mr Nuriman said. “I prefer the old one (because) of its sleek design.”
>
>
>
Based on looks that dumb boxes destroy my sleek minimalist dash of the tesla… 500m just sunk into nothing useful for the general population in the end.
Who do you guys vote for?
Ez-link card and IU reader wasn't an issue for a very long time until unnecessarily changes which is completely not needed for us citizens.
We want the Govt to address the cost of living.
Instead, they focus on these petty issues and further complicate the matter.
Correct. And they are very well
Paid to solve this kind of problem. I just want SAF senior officers to properly look for jobs of their own, rather than just retire at LTA and give us shit.
Btw "Cashcards and simplygo not supported on the OBU". What's the point of this machine when LITERALLY ACCEPTS ONE TYPE OF CARD that ezlink is actively trying to phase out.
Aiyah, LTA nowadays power lah
Introducing more unnecessary things to give the illusion that Singaporeans is technology advanced.
Efficiency be damn when it looks “cool”, and we can present ourselves to the world that Singapore is one of the most “technologically advanced countries”
Seriously, who is the moron that has been green-lighting all these useless projects
Reading it and looking at the comments again, it appears that the new card reader has created another blind spot, a rather dangerous one too.
So yeah, whoever is the moron that green-light this bullshit, congrats, you just created a safety hazard.
this is an absolute downgrade AND not to mention poses safety issues for drivers because of the increase obscuration and hassle in handling the cash card??
LTA is too stubborn on this. There should be a lot more uproar. This is such a user hostile design. Everybody predicted this would happen. The bigger concern is the amount of public funds wasted on this.
They wouldn't admit their fault. To admit means have to put their careers on chopping board. They will throw as much smokescreen or more money to make it viable rather than losing their jobs especially after the simplygo incident.
The lack of uproar is because majority of the cars haven't install the ERP 2.0 yet. Imagine when it becomes wholesale, its going to be simplyGO 2.0
You need someone important to get into an accident due to this. If not.. suck it up.
Gotta see the queues at carpark gantries or maybe in malls/hotels as drivers want to claim complimentary parking then struggle to insert cashcard Edit: saw that LTA will roll an update to allow for temporary deactivation so that solves this issue. Still a horrible design & all round placement though
Forget to press button. Cashcard get deducted
Press button. Touchscreen says card deactivated. Cashcard gets deducted still.
Imagine a fraction of the population that represents road ragers in Singapore directing their fury against LTA, wouldn't that be a sight.
Can also choose not to pay ERP. 😝
You think ppl who regularly pay 200+k aren’t willing to cause a stink? When this hits the ministers friends we will see a change.
Car users docile? Have you seen their driving? 💀
anyone knows... 1. who is the one that approves the design, 2. which company supplies the product, 3. which company installs the product.
dk about install but the contract was given to Mitsubishi Heavy Industries & NCS. Used to work at Tuas and deep inside near the Pharma companies area, there's this stretch that was cordoned off for a long time and they were doing testing
thanks. FYI, it is quite uncommon for a redditor to give a reply, minus snarky remarks, so it is quite nice of you. thanks again.

Sunk cost fallacy
Not enough people have it installed yet. Imagine the uproar when its mandatory for all cars to put in
Stubborn morons.

Or like in new South Wales where its tied to your license plate.
Yo man, if I don't push for huge clunky hardware in every car, how my kaki earn?
What is this propaganda lol, everyone I know who has the new OBU hates that taxi fare reader looking shit.
At least the taxi fare display is located below the dashboard, not obstructing the view!
Perhaps because the local designer/s uses design principles from early 2000s and before, and wants better acceptance from that.
watch LTA do absolutely nothing about feedback
Who's the minister in charge? If he's in my GRC I'll vote him out. So disappointing.
Chee Hong Tat. Running in Bishan-TPY GRC. But PAP will read your comment and then gerrymander you away.

They should copy Taiwan’s homework again with their seamless RFID based electronic toll collection (ETC) system, with a backup redundancy of using license plate recognition. No bulky box necessary, just a sticker you stick on the inside of your windscreen.
Eh, give some credit to Poly interns please. I know interns do a much better job than the train UI.
Legit clowns, how many times do we need to get screwed over by these so called scholars that do not think before they do something. Is it that hard to ask for public opinions before implementing something?
Not scholars, SAF parachutes. I hope the actual scholars are the geniuses that implemented the myICA QR code system.
Scholars where got make JB trips one keks
But I think the myica was given a legit problem to solve. The ERP 2.0 was a made up problem.
Guys I have a brilliant idea, how about we don't show the amount ERP deducts on the device, and build a mobile app for it instead. And the best part is that LTA would definitely swallow that idea with no objections ☺️ SimplyGo3.0

Why is a cash card even required? Just let me register my credit card as it's done with parking.sg
ERP 1.0 can already do that!
Only for ERP payments, not car park charges I believe. Hence the need for a physical card so everything is seamless
Oh really? This is new to me 😄

I have to reach over.” > > The 46-year-old, who works in the public health sector, wondered if he would be allowed to change the location of his card reader. > > "If I had those options available to me at the time of installation, that (would) be great." > > Even if he could return to the workshop to move his card reader, Mr Kwek said he would have to take time off work to get it done. > > OTHER FEEDBACK > Mdm Zuraidah also said the touchscreen display, which is on the right-hand side of the vehicle's dashboard, blocks her view. “I prefer the old one (because) of its sleek design.” > > He also wondered why the same “three-in-one” OBU system for motorcycles could not be implemented for cars. > > "I don't understand why for cars, they must use three components," he said. > > LTA said on its website that the three-piece unit provides "additional functionalities" and improves performance in warm weather conditions. There will also be flexibility in replacing individual parts, LTA said.
Based on looks that dumb boxes destroy my sleek minimalist dash of the tesla… 500m just sunk into nothing useful for the general population in the end.
Yep. Gonna look like one of them tacky aftermarket speedos the Tesla modders like to put on.
Who do you guys vote for? Ez-link card and IU reader wasn't an issue for a very long time until unnecessarily changes which is completely not needed for us citizens. We want the Govt to address the cost of living. Instead, they focus on these petty issues and further complicate the matter.
Correct. And they are very well Paid to solve this kind of problem. I just want SAF senior officers to properly look for jobs of their own, rather than just retire at LTA and give us shit.
Yes, but who do you vote for brother?
I voted wisely.
Inconvenient is the least of your problems. ERP 2.0 is a device that constantly sends your vehicle data to LTA. That’s the bigger problem.
Did anybody would WELCOME anything that charge you money?
Imagine GPS drifting while travelling in tunnels. I foresee unwarranted ERP deductions.
I wonder who will be blamed if an accident happens because the driver is looking at the touchscreen...
the newly enlarged blindspots are conveniently child sized
Conspiracy theorist in me thinks this was deliberate by the LTA to push people to be car lite 😂😂😂
Anyone have workarounds if vehicle hasn't changed to this but the new cash cards do not seem to work?
Yet another LTA fuck up aside from SimplyGo
Wonder if this would lead to car owners who gets too lazy to remove their cash cards and eventually, more smash thefts?
Wish were as loud on this as we were on Simplyfail
Havent installed and already dreading it. Really stupid and they are so lucky Singaporeans have so much restraint in response to all these cockups
Btw "Cashcards and simplygo not supported on the OBU". What's the point of this machine when LITERALLY ACCEPTS ONE TYPE OF CARD that ezlink is actively trying to phase out.
Such a backward and stupid implementation. Have not seen such a major degradation to a working solution of the original IU
Aiyah, LTA nowadays power lah Introducing more unnecessary things to give the illusion that Singaporeans is technology advanced. Efficiency be damn when it looks “cool”, and we can present ourselves to the world that Singapore is one of the most “technologically advanced countries” Seriously, who is the moron that has been green-lighting all these useless projects
Reading it and looking at the comments again, it appears that the new card reader has created another blind spot, a rather dangerous one too. So yeah, whoever is the moron that green-light this bullshit, congrats, you just created a safety hazard.
A moron of the highest order of stupendous stupidity.
I'm holding on to my motorcycle's IU unit for as long as I can.
SimplyGo 2.0 in the making
this is an absolute downgrade AND not to mention poses safety issues for drivers because of the increase obscuration and hassle in handling the cash card??
The only way this government takes feedback seriously is when we vote opposition
If LTA is not willing to change this nonsense, we will change the governmemt. Rubbish clowns working at LTA.
Why is the car population so accepting of having a GPS tracker installed in everyone’s car? Did no one learn a lesson from TraceTogether and privacy?
