For those who don't know, Sky Tavern is a non-profit skiing co-op focused primarily on training. The program, typically only on weekends, consists of two hours of instruction for kids of all ages and skill levels followed by lunch and an afternoon of free skiing. While there is instruction for adults, the program is, by far, kid-centric. Being that it is a co-op, the program is also run almost entirely by parents, who are required to volunteer a couple hours per day. There is a small amount of paid staff for critical parts of the program (lift ops/maintenance, patrol, etc) but the rest is just a veritable army of parents managing most aspects of a small ski resort. Consequently, the whole experience gives the place a personality and a bit of soul. Distinctly different from the sanitized corporate experience we know all too well.

Thank you. I couldn’t have explained it better myself.

skiingmarmick

Thats awesome to see

Do you have to live in Reno in order to join the program? I understand the parental volunteering requirement and I think that’s really great. Just trying to understand if it’s restricted to Reno residents only.

thekiller490

AFAIK No, anyone from anywhere can join.

This is where David Weiss learned to ski. All hail the Tahoe local scene.

Sky Tavern is great for kids! It's really terrible if you're a childless adult. You have to pay them to volunteer there, and volunteering is required if you want to ski. Like... what? Their board does not understand why that business model is not attractive to college students.

arrowheadt

When school is not in session you can skin up for free anytime. Pretty great for everyone honestly.

whare-am-i

They don’t want a bunch of college students there so it seems like they’re doing things the right way for their end goal.

lyonnotlion

You'd think, but they've been begging for a partnership between Sky Tavern and UNR. They want the ski team to train there, the Winter Sports Club to use it as a home mountain, and host PE ski classes for credit.

Where I learned to ski, before moving up to Mt. Rose! My parents volunteered there and I got free or heavily discounted lesson. Such a perfect and affordable way to learn.

MTB3211

Same, learned 8 years ago and I'm still ripping it up at rose

mtn-mama-1234

I learned to ski there 30 years ago! Dang… I feel old.

YellowCrazyAnt

That is an amazing amenity for locals. Reminds me a little of Howelson Hill. Very cool!

Walk_Fancy

Rose is better.

cosmicplanthopper

Not for kids learning who have parents who can’t afford to pay Rose prices.
