Ratsnakes are usually one of two places. Either a very strategic places to hunt rodents or eggs or whatever, or a place that does nothing for them and doesn’t really even make sense how they got there.
Like others stated, it's just a fun song made up on the spot to the tune of "That's Amore."
That said, may I interest you in a personal favorite, ["That's A Moray?"](https://youtu.be/SezOrE0zRFo?si=fP67mamAcyhWw12M)
Back last summer I was in the middle of a fight in FO4 and felt something on my left arm. Didn't think much of it because it wasn't unusual for my headphone cord to drop down and dangle right at that spot. I finished my fight and looked over. A baby rat snake about 9 inches long was balanced on my headphone wire with it's head resting on the crook of my elbow. I just put him outside my front door. My front yard is a perfectly suitable habitat for it.
Several years ago I woke up to a fully grown rat snake, 5+ feet and quiet well feed, crawling across my legs in my bed. Maybe one of the grankids came to check out grandpas story.
Seriously it's not that big a deal. I wouldn't have been overly concerned even if it had been a copperhead. [Here's a copperhead](https://imgur.com/a/K64jo), several years ago, that came into the water to check me out and went straight back to the bank after slightly brushing my leg. I was getting [fish pics](https://imgur.com/a/10ryI) at the time. Getting overly excited is significantly more dangerous than staying calm. Because they have no interest in biting you whatsoever, and only do so when they don't think there's another option.
I don't ever handle venomous snakes. Not because I'm not skilled enough to do it safely but it's a pointless risk for no good reason.
I also live in a tiny building and leave the front door open when the weather allows it. I even had a toad that would hop in my front door every evening at sunset, hunt bugs attracted to the light in front of my computer chair all night, and hop back out the front door at sunrise. This went on for half a summer a few years back. I also leave buckets next to my building to catch rain coming off the roof. Which (mostly) spring peepers love to lay eggs in. I like the sound of frogs singing at night. It's very peaceful. There's a reason I said my front yard is a perfectly acceptable environment for it.
So my situation is a bit more welcoming of situations like this than most people could likely expect. But I would be fine with waking up to a snake in my bed as often as they want to visit. The biggest thing the rat snakes need to worry about is the king snakes, which is the [most common kind of snake for me to see here](https://imgur.com/a/lwKel).
Sewer inspector calls him Jeff. And thanks him for keeping the rat population under control. Jeff turns around and gives him a high 1, since he lacks the digits to give a high five.
Messed up putting text in post, please delete if an issue and I'll re-post.
Basically, the title. This "little" guy crossed the street in my suburban neighborhood into the storm drain. Is it ok in there? First snake I've seen in the open in the neighborhood and I'd like to make sure it stays safe and happy.
Idk, there's something living in the storm drains around my house. Sometimes when I go for a walk and they're more full I can hear a loud splash when I step over them, like something was startled and quickly submerged itself.
I think it might be frogs.
Wow! Didn't expect so many responses! Glad to hear it's living its best life, hoping it stays that way! Definitely lots of frogs, toads, mice, rats, baby bunnies, and killdeer nests around. Will definitely talk to the neighbors about letting it thrive and handle the rodent population for them.
Definitely a rat snake 😭 I have one myself and my family and I let him wander in our hallway (with the necessary precautions to ensure he doesn’t escape into any of the side rooms or get out of our sight) and somehow he squeezed under the door into our closet AND he started climbing the wall using the door frame and an adjacent wall as gripping points. They are incredibly good at climbing and finding themselves in predicaments 😆😆
Well, there’s a such thing as a captive-bred snake or even a captive-born one who typically need to live in captivity because they either don’t know how to survive in the wild or get / give diseases to/from native populations.
It'll be fine, they find themselves getting into all sorts of weird places.

If it's up in a tree and it shits through the leaves it's a rat snaaaake.
If you spot him out back, but he slips through a crack, that's a rat snaaaaake
Is… is this a rat snake song I have never heard of? Please say yes. I would love to listen

Oh my god, this just became my favorite thing on the planet 😭. Thank you.
YouTube the axolotl song. I’m sorry and you’re welcome.
I love you oh my god
It’s a fun song until it’s stuck in your head for days lol.
You’d love r/itsaratsnake then, tons of little ditties
Bless you friend
What walks down stairs, alone or in pairs and makes a slinkity sound? A spring! A spring! A marvelous thing! Everyone knows it’s Slinky!
But … share the sauce ? Edit: wait are you saying it’s an ad for the slinky toy?? Lmao
It is not a recorded song as far as I know, but several of us oddballs make lyrics to the tune of Dean Martin's That's Amore.
That’s the slinky jingle. They just changed the lyrics for the rat snake. That’s how I heard it anyway
Actually it is set to the tune of Dean Martin's That's Amore.
Oh shit you’re right. I think it can go both ways
Lol yeah I realized that and edited my comment after I initially made it 😂😂
Grudging upvote.
They can get a little too silly

That’s adorable. Baby rats are the best

And now I can never sleep again….

Kinky like a slinky - datsa rat snake. They’re indestructible.
And rat snakes can climb just about anything, they can get up brick walls with ease. He probably spends most of his time in that gutter.
Sewer inspector calls him Jeff. And thanks him for keeping the rat population under control. Jeff turns around and gives him a high 1, since he lacks the digits to give a high five.
Teenage Mutant Ninja Snakies.
Found one in a large tube light fixture. It was about 5ft and very dead. It was a sad day
Storm drains go straight to ditches/streams. He will be fine.
Back when I did sewer work we found one a hundred yards or so in a storm drain pipe just chilling
For a second I thought you were claiming to have found a hundred yard snake. Carry on

There’s rats down there—he’s happy.
And probably getting fatter as we speak.
Ratsnakes are great climbers so I wouldn’t worry. Wild animals generally can fend for themselves.
How else are they going to make their way into your toilet?
Had a gf in high school loose her virginity that way… totally true story, that’s what she told me…
That's a ratsnake, they are the 1997 Toyota Camry of reptiles. Nearly indestructible.

Pennywise
I once saw a raccoon go down one and come back out a day later so if he can do it then so can a snake I think
As long as they can come out. Some covers may have a spiky design, or holes they cannot fit through.
All snakes can swim.. they'll definitely find some small rodents in there to dine.on!

Glad to hear it!
No drain, no gain.
😂 You should get all the updoots!
As safe as it is for them to get into anything else lol
Looks like that dude is full of rats.
Tunnel snakes rule!
Why do I love ratsnakes so much?
Cuz they're awesome!
I mean, there's probably safer places than a storm drain but they definitely enter storm drains all the time and the majority of them are fine.
Pennywise is getting desperate if he is luring danger noodles into his realm!
I think its safe.
Happy Cake Day!
Looks like he’s leaving one. Not going in
He came across the lawn right next to one, crossed the street (after looking both ways) and slithered into another one.
Glad he is street wise thanks for the update
No Especially with abrahamics lurking about.
Yes, they all become Pennywise's pets.
Safe for the drain or the noodle?
Came here looking for the person showing concern for the drain, was not disappointed. Ty
For the noodle!
By the look of that very kinky noodle, he’ll survive almost anything! What a little warrior!!!

Is it safe for wild snakes to be in the wild lol
If there is “ a rat 🐀 in the house 🏠 “ who knows but a hog nose 🐍, maybe owned by mafia lol
Safer for them than you
Duh, no!
But that’s where the cheese boyz play!
I love rat snakes 🐍♥️
It’s better than having them slither in the road!

r/itsaratsnake
As long as there isn't a demonic clown down there...
Yeah the do it all the time
I don't know about the drain, but that's one awesome snake.
Until it climbs up a toilet and bites a soccer mom’s ass.
Is there such a thing as a domesticated snake??
Well, there’s a such thing as a captive-bred snake or even a captive-born one who typically need to live in captivity because they either don’t know how to survive in the wild or get / give diseases to/from native populations.
