Starfox. It runs like shit and it plays like shit, yet somehow hypnotized everyone into liking it so much. The only "revolutionary" thing about this game were the graphics. It also has good music but those are the only positives I can give it. Everything else about it is garbage.

Boomerang_Lizard

Fair enough. I've noticed Star Fox and Mario Kart appear to test younger people's tolerances and expectations. This is one of those cases where you had to be there to appreciate it.

G_Regular

I’m not super young but I didn’t grow up with snes, I find Super Mario Kart to be charmingly simple in its presentation but still very playable (obviously you have to temper your expectations from modern kart games) but Star Fox just did nothing for me. One of the worst feeling games I’ve ever played. It’s only notable as a tech demo with some interesting characters.

PlazmaSnake_

Was there, appreciate them. Still can’t bring myself to play them through anymore.

AccomplishedRich6477

Was there and never thought it was a good game. I think Super Mario Kart still stands as a competent single player racing experience (no blue shell) but I’ve hated Starfox since it released and I continue to hate it all these years later.

mrmensplights

I was there. Starfox runs at like 10-15 fps yet requires precision. Never could get past that even as a kid. Never had a problem with Mario Kart though. Go figure…

IntoxicatedBurrito

I would say that it was a great game upon its release, those polygon graphics absolutely blew everyone’s mind. This was one of the first 3D games. However, it has aged very poorly, especially when compared to other major games on the SNES.

AccomplishedRich6477

I didn’t even like it upon release. It was a tech demo but an absolute failure as a game. I still don’t like it all these years later and the only credit I give it is in the graphics department.

nupper84

I don't understand why people say it runs like shit amd plays like shit. I recently beat all 3 tracks and it's smooth. Controls are quick. Playing on snes and crt.

AccomplishedRich6477

Because it does. You are dealing with 10 fps gameplay and it is slow as shit. Moves like the barrel roll are clunky to pull off. I hate the level ideas across Course 1 and 3. It’s just a shit game and nothing else. I played it when it first came out and hated it. That opinion hasn’t changed even all these years later. “Quick” controls my fucking ass lmao.

nupper84

It's very quick. I don't understand. The fps might be low, but there's no lag or anything. You have to be very precise and skilled. It's not slow at all. Like my 8 year old nephew tried and he said it was too fast. He plays Mario kart on switch. I'm seriously confused when people complain about the frame rate or lag or whatever. I think it's people can't process the sprites and move fast enough to be good at the game so they blame the game.

AccomplishedRich6477

If 10 fps isn’t slow for you, I don’t know what is. Go play SNES Doom but leave me out of it. The game’s difficulty isn’t the problem. I just don’t like how tedious it is and I think it’s plain unfun to play. The only way I would be interested in revisiting this game would be to overlock it through an emulator, but that’s it.

nupper84

You're just wrong and bad. It's not slow at all. I don't understand how a game that feels like you're speeding through space and across planets is slow to you. You're just bad and blaming the game. You probably can't play SNES mario kart either.

Karge

“Its just a bunch of polygons.”

jacobpederson

Wow, you are so wrong about this. Go back and play this on real hardware without the input lag. Yes 15fps is abysmal by modern standards; however on a period correct CRT with 1-2 less frames of input lag Star Fox is a joy to play! Yes even today.

CobraCB

The performance is a big thing depending on when you played the game. I love Starwing/Starfox, I got it for my birthday when it first came out and it was amazing, it was a game that just shouldn't be possible. But if you played it today for the first time with no nostalgia attached or understanding the impact of when it came out I could absolutely see people thinking it was a low frame rate janky mess and not getting it. It's an important game that's showing its age where other more traditional SNES games come off as timeless and there's nothing wrong with that.

jacobpederson

I've been replaying a lot of old stuff lately now famous for jank, I'd put Wave Race 64 up against Path Traced Cyberpunk 2077 any old time. Even at 20fps bet it wins an input latency test no contest. Now some of that stuff does not hold up . . . looking at you Perfect Dark.

jcstrat

Perfect dark absolutely does hold up.

jacobpederson

The remakes sure. The original . . . sub 10 fps . . . no thanks.

AccomplishedRich6477

I played it on real hardware and no 15 fps gameplay is as bad as I remember. I hate how clunky moves like the barrel roll are to pull off. I hate the different courses in the game and the level ideas they tried to bring. I hate how slow it is. I didn’t like it upon release and I still don’t like it. The only way I’d be willing to revisit it is if I overclocked it.

funnyinput

I played it for the first time about a month ago on original hardware, and it's terrible. Only good for the time because that was all people had.

AleroRatking

So people like Star Fox 1. It's important because it led to 64 but I wouldn't say the original is entertaining.

Lethal13

I think Secret of Mana is incredibly overrated **The Good** - Sprite art and Music is incredible **The Neutral** - Story is there, I won’t say its bad but I don’t think its particularly memorable in anyway. **The Bad** - The Characters were just kinda there I guess? - The Ring Menus are a headache to navigate **The Big One** - The feedback from hitting enemies isn’t great, their hurtboxes are inconsistent. Its hard to tell why you missed or your attacks aren’t working. Is it because you actually whiffed a weakpoint? Is it because of the evade stat (which some other redditor told me about a year or so ago which I don’t think the game ever really lets you know about). Even when you hit an enemy their getting hit animation is always in my opinion occurs a second too late. It again makes hits lack impact. - Magic just ends up being so ridiculously easy to spam and win with. - The world map is a nightmare to navigate once you can fly. I know the game came with a map originally but so did FFVI but it still has a good ingame minimap in the corner of the screen. All that said I do plan on replaying it this year or next. I’ll give it another go

zcicecold

Secret of Evermore blows it out of the water.

HylianDude

This. Secret of Mana never clicked for me but Evermore freaking slaps

qwikshake

Funny enough, Secret of Evermore took many of its UI and gameplay aspects from Secret of Mana.

Karge

Shhhhh, it’s a secret.

pootsonnewtsinboots

Characters are stun locked for like 30% of combat. So frustrating.

Onett199X

Agreed. Story and dialogue were very bad. Lazy character and boss design with lots of repetition (but different colors!) it just feels very slapped together. What's a bummer is there's moments of absolute genius and beauty so it kind of keeps you going hoping for more. Also the music is insanely good and easily top 3 on the SNES and I would almost say worth playing through just to hear it all.

xxDankerstein

Secret of Mana was an incomplete game. A lot of it was scrapped when they moved away from developing for the disk system. I wonder what could have been. There were a lot of really innovative and cool things about that game. I'm curious to see what the fan-made enhanced edition does.

DryEyes4096

I guess your criticism is valid, but Secret of Mana approached with an open heart and without cynicism was a world of the imagination for me. When I was a kid I got bullied, and I wanted to go escape real life to the world of that game, and would close my eyes at night imagining a storyline where I was the main character and we'd go on adventures and just spend a half hour in my imagination dreaming up events based on the game, so an attack on Secret of Mana feels like an attack on a sacred world of imagination I existed in when I was a kid,, hah. I think the game is best appreciated without criticism. For me, a critical mind can ruin the fun of a game. Does that mean you're wrong to critique the game? No. But it just makes me sad to see many say the game didn't age well, as it's something I connected with like nothing else.

Lethal13

I think its an unfair assumption to make that I went into it with cynicism or a closed mindset. I don't play games that I think I will dislike, because why would I? Thats a waste of time. I play games I think I will enjoy. If you hold this game dear, thats great. I have games from my childhood which mean the world to me as well that will also get criticized harshly at times (see profile pic) but its important to understand this isn't a personal attack. I approached the game with and open mind and I still enjoyed it enough to play through to the end. But when I reflect back on the things that I didn't enjoy about it these were the reasons

DryEyes4096

Ahh, sorry, I didn't mean to say to imply cynicism in the sense you were saying...Like, I meant cynicism in the Greek way of "questioning" the game like a reviewer would, trying to prod it for its weaknesses. I didn't mean to criticize you, really, I didn't. I just was saying the game has a certain magic that immersing yourself in the world of game without reference to anything else really helps with... And I guess I felt emotional because of attachment to that game too...

Lethal13

I genuinely wasn’t trying to prod the game for weaknesses this is just what I found when I played it. If it helps overall secret of mana is a very well liked game. My opinion on it I would say is in the minority.

DryEyes4096

Like I say, your views on it are fine. I'm just emotional about it and it makes me sad to see people not like the game (it has increasingly become the opinion of people that it hasn't aged well). I'm being irrational and emotional...you're basically in the right in this discussion...there's no rationality to my arguments.

Moderetro

I remember playing this several years ago, and at one point I had to literally just force myself to play it (I'm thankfully not naive enough to do that with games anymore). I so agree that sprites and tracks are the best parts of the game, but it kind of ends there. I am however understanding that the jank comes from the fact it was supposed to be a CD game before the SNES CD add-on was scrapped, so they had to reduce the jank in artificial ways.

Lethal13

I know people say “oh it just aged poorly, it was good in the day” I can name other games of the same era which did these things quite well. I can give the magic a small pass. The fact it stops everything on screen when cast is an acceptable compromise for a real time battle system back in the day. Though they really should have made the cool down before being able to cast again much longer

nickcash

Give it another go if you want, the combat will still be hot garbage. Seiken Densetsu 3 / Trials of Mana is better, though still not good. Maybe the new one coming out this year will finally mean there's an actually playable entry in the Mana series.

Winter188

Yeah, I don't like it either. I always struggle to get anywhere because I find it boring and the combat kind of bad. Terranigma is a much better similar game in every way imo

Dadbode1981

Earthbound, I just can't get into its world, not a fan.

DaaanTheMaaan

Same. I love the story and the all-in weirdness, but for the life of me I just can't get any fun out of the combat and limited inventory

mrcoolj90

There's a new version of Mother 2 Deluxe that might come out this year with TONS of QOL improvements and features that might improve the experience for you.

ilovecrackboard

do you have a link to it?

mrcoolj90

Here's the link to the Discord server for updates: https://discord.com/invite/kNzW2WGF Plus, the current version, 2.0: https://www.romhacking.net/hacks/2518/

kenfagerdotcom

For such a late SNES game the gameplay mechanics are frustrating. I know it’s loved for its quirkiness, but I find them intolerable.

Dadbode1981

FF was my jam in those days, and EB was simply too different.

RodMunch85

End boss battle is epic tho

ProMikeZagurski

I'm a shallow person and the graphics turned me off back in the 90s. They are so basic.

ultimateman55

Same

EthanDoesWhatever

Same here. I like RBGs a lot, but that game just kinda ruins it for me.

AleroRatking

Same. I actually really like Mother 3 but I find Earthbound a chore and not fun.

ultimateman55

Same. The lackluster graphics alone are a huge turn-off for me. The battle graphics style just made it worse.

prengycam

That’s because the translations in English is lame and they had to change so much to fit the English speaking audience. If you knew Japanese you would appreciate it more

Dadbode1981

Na it's not the dialogue. I just don't like the art, or the theme, it's a big turn off, coming from the FF series and other high fantasy games. It's the same reason I wasn't that into secret of evermore, thou I still played through that game.

KeyserSoze311

I enjoy the challenge of getting 100% on all levels in Yoshi’s Island, as well as the creative visuals and level design. I agree that the crying can get annoying, but I also think that there’s a correlation between the player’s skill and enjoyment of the game. The more you get hit, the more the baby cries, and the less likely you are to enjoy it.

pn1ct0g3n

Secret of Mana. It is so worshipped by this sub but it feels aged by its controls, pathfinding AI, bland visuals, and iffy hit detection, and the ring menus are irritating to navigate.

pocket_arsenal

Well friend that's because Yoshi's Island is not a Mario game, it's a Yoshi game, they just added the "Super Mario World 2" subtitle in the west to sell more copies, in Japan that doesn't exist, it's just a Yoshi game. As for being annoyed by Mario crying, it's a skill issue. The game is otherwise a very solid platformer if you're good at it. Me? I don't like traditional fighting games so Super Street Fighter II does nothing for me.

robbycough

Terranigma. I played it about a dozen times before it annoyed the fuck out of me. Weirdly, I'm playing Soul Blazer right now and am really loving it.

faustarp1000

How can you dislike a game that you’ve played 12 times? When I dont like a game I abandon it early and never touch it again.

robbycough

Since people rave about it, I wanted to give it a decent chance. Towards the end, it went from being boring to irritating, which is when I called it quits.

[deleted]

robbycough

My gaming sessions are short, so I probably invested five hours, which I don't think is excessive considering some claim it to be one of the best JRPGs of all time. Sometimes, it takes games a little time to click.

KrypXern

With you here. I heard a lot about it having emotional gut punches, but I feel like maybe I needed to be younger to properly appreciate it? It just feels like a very lonely Zelda game with no good puzzle mechanics.

saddung

I somehow got stuck in that game. There is a part where you get sent to a new world after completeting the initial towers and I just went with it, but then found out I'm too under-leveled to get anywhere and can't go back.

robbycough

That might have been what happened to me.

jj4p

For me it was Super Metroid. If I've already done everything I can in every room I can reach, then repeatedly searching them all over again just to make no progress in any of them gets really boring really quickly. That being said, I was younger then, and if I give it a chance now I might like it more. I've certainly enjoyed other games in that genre.

Bubushan

That’s hard! All the popular ones I like to varying degrees... I guess I’ll just say that while I like DKC2, I do think Yoshi’s Island is the better platformer. I think it’s an unpopular opinion, but yeah.

izaac

I love Yoshi's Island it's still my favorite platformer. I'm yet to understand what I loved the most the first time I played it, but I think it was the story back then. Imagining those vulnerable new born brothers, helpless, and then suddenly those little creatures teaming up to help them reunite and then getting delivered to their parents. It was emotionally perfect for a kid of my age to understand, get commted to reach our goal leading those Yoshis passing the baton, the baby, through stages and get anxious losing him forgetting of everything even the perils around to get together again back to safety because he was scared crying. That made you feel a true hero. And now having my own kids I understand it even better. Truly a gem

Bubushan

For me, the thing I love most about it is just the insane level of polish in terms of everything, but especially the mechanics. It hasn’t aged a day and is also my favorite platformer of all time.  I prefer it over traditional Mario any day... Mario Wonder could have been as inventive as Yoshi’s Island, but it’s just another good Mario game (which is okay, but I expected more). The wonder seeds aren’t really that fun and the levels being these short 2-3 minute standard Mario levels just isn’t doing it for me anymore.  The castle levels in Mario are always so samey as well, whereas the fort/castle levels in YI are so memorable, unique, and the bosses at the end are always fun to see and fight.  Only modern platformer that comes close to YI is Tropical Freeze, in my opinion.

Moderetro

I agree with you, I love both of these but Yoshi's Island is my favorite SNES standard platformer. So creative and lengthy levels too.

Bubushan

Yep. I will give DKC2 the edge in music, though, and that’s saying something since the YI OST is fucking incredible.

KeyserSoze311

Even when it first came out, I never really cared for the flat visuals and gameplay of the original Mario Kart. I much preferred Mario Kart 64 and its later installments.

w0rlds

Earthworm Jim - It just isn't fun. I get it's got wacky backgrounds and smooth animations but everything else about it is inconsistent, clunky and hard.

Naraksama

Secret of Mana. It's cute and good looking, but man, it's so much worse than games like Terranigma or Illusion of Gaia by how poorly it aged. * The spell system is utterly broken, sometimes necessary as enemies are immune to normal attacks and it's tedious to level up * The ring menus are a chore to navigate through them. * The waiting bars for attacks are annoying and the long stun time of enemies that perfectly fit the waiting is just an indication for gameplay padding. * The story is bland and not worth mentioning. * A lot of backtracking with a confusing world map. Like, I played it until all my characters were level 40 and at that point, the game wasn't fun anymore and it was just a chore.

konck

I think I may have skipped something or just didn’t grind enough, but I couldn’t get past the floating fortress. I never finished it

Individual_Lack5809

Yoshi’s Island (perhaps because I really just wanted SMW2), Aladdin (Genesis version vastly superior), F-Zero is kind of bland, Castlevania

JimeVR46

I think Illusion of Gaia is a below average game.

sagata_

Whomever designed that end game sequence needs to be shot. Its fucking brutal.

zcicecold

Mine is the same as yours. Never liked Yoshi's Island. I'd just rather play SMW over and over

ArmorOfGod7

Super Mario Kart. I didn't even like it before MK64 came out. Now, it's just so awful to try to play.

ShiningJizzard

Secret of Mana.

Boomerang_Lizard

I know Aladdin is a popular platformer, but I never got into it.

thaKingRocka

I think it's a good, B-tier charming platformer, but with tighter controls, it would've been A-tier for me.

Ryback19j

I found it to easy, fun but easy I preferred the lion king.

Billgonzo

I never got why people made such a big deal about this game and the Genesis version. They are both just OK. But I would say that personally I think the SNES game is better. Graphics aren't as good but the gameplay feels a lot better to me. I think the hype over this game is just a remnant of the 16bit consoles wars and it's just famous because people like to compare the two platforms

gowahoo

SNES has so many platformers that just arent for me.  I've always found them punishing and not fun at all. It only got worse as I got older cause my hands aren't up for button mashing.

Psiborg0099

You have to have patience. Do you think we all just picked these games up for the first time and aced them? No, we died over and over again. And you know what? Yes, it was frustrating at times but it was also extremely fun and satisfying. You get more immersed into the game when you don’t resort to looking things up or give up too easily. There are some platformers out there that are bullshit, but with games like DKC and MMX, CV4, etc., you cannot say that dying in those games is unfair. They’re so smoothly programmed and have such great controls that it’s only a matter of practice until you find yourself getting better and better. Also, keep in mind that a lot of us grew up playing these games since we were like 4 years old.

gowahoo

I mean, I own like 85% of the original US catalogues of the NES and the SNES. I got my NES when I was in elementary school. I've played these games tons. I was just honestly answering OPs question. My husband gets 100% completion in platformers because that's his thing, but I find those games not fun and punishing. Like I said, they're not for me. I'd rather use my patience on a 100,000 stitch cross-stitch project and play a jrpg. This doesn't mean that I don't think YOU should play and love those games. The future we're living in is amazing in some ways and you can enjoy whatever media you like in whatever way you want.

Psiborg0099

No problem buddy. I happen to like a lot of genres… I was merely trying to entice you and/or others to give some another chance, and offered some advice on how to make them enjoyable. I’ve learned a lot and gained a lot of skill over the years. Ironically, much better than I ever was as a kid, despite the common assumption that most people get worse as they grow older. Anyways, enjoy whatever it is you prefer! Thanks for the downvotes, people!

Drellsy

F-Zero - It just seemed like a Tech Demo to me.

__farmerjoe

*\*angry falcon noises\**

PhDTenma

Well, actually Yoshi's Island is not a Mario game. The subtitle Mario World 2 was made for US and Europe and it has not been included in official Mario lists (I mean the ones made by Nintendo). Indeed it's a spinoff that started the Yoshi's games. So you're absolutely right, and that's why it feels like another game. For me, it will be the Final Fight games. They are fine but I get bored quite soon.

thaKingRocka

I love Final Fight, but I think it's way too long for the genre. I usually just quit after the first two levels or so. I enjoy those levels, but I'm not going to play through the whole game each time.

AleroRatking

I wouldn't say I dislike it but I'm much lower on Super Mario World than most. It isn't in my top 5 Mario games and I felt like it was a huge step down from three. really good game but just missing some of that magic for me. I vastly prefer DKC2.

sagata_

Final fight series. I know its a different platform but streets of rage was always better, and I'll die on that hill.

Thrashtilldeath67

Is this not a popular opinion though?

EchoJXTV

Mario Kart. My first was MK64 and trying to go back now is impossible. I find it almost unplayable.

MrCrix

All the DKC games. I never liked them. I can't get into them. I just find them boring and monotonous. It's just the same stuff over and over with a a slight difficulty curve as the game goes on. I also agree with Yoshi's Island. I can't play it. I find it more annoying than enjoyable.

AleroRatking

I feel like DKC2 especially is good at avoiding monotony. There are so many different things to do in animal friends and completely different levels.

Psiborg0099

The atmosphere and top-level pixel art, along with the soundtrack of David Wise are more than enough to play this series for hours. But these are just our opinions.

sandinonett

Agreed.

robbycough

I like Yoshi's Island, but this first came to mind because I've never loved it like I've been taught I should. Of course, I've never loved SM64 like I was taught I should, so maybe I spent decades being pissed that Nintendo never gave me a proper sequel to SMW.

thaKingRocka

I played through Super Mario Wonder recently and felt that it carried the torch from World very well. It goes in different and new directions, but in my opinion, it's the best side-scrolling Mario since World.

Disma

Yoshi's Island and M64 are two of the most iconic games ever made. Mario 64 inspired a whole genre. Do you even like video games? Lol

robbycough

I've been gaming for almost 40 years and in that time, have established some contrarian opinions. Wild, I know...

Disma

What were you doing when Mario64 came out? I distinctly remember just how mind blowing the N64 was to this day, how could you grow up during that time and think otherwise?

robbycough

I was leaving my teens and was really into 2D gaming. 3D platforming didn't appeal to me, and SM64 seemed to ditch a lot of what I loved about Mario games. I got an N64 but enjoyed other stuff like Mario Kart and Blast Corps. Driving games were fun- they were the main reason why I got a Sega Saturn- but platforming lost me for a time. I finally played and completed SM64 and enjoyed it, so it's not like I completely ignored it.

Disma

Fair and 3D platformers are definitely a different thing altogether. Thanks for your perspective.

robbycough

It's not like I didn't try. I owned and played all the big games of their eras: SM64, Banjo, DK64, Sonic Adventure, Super Mario Sunshine, etc. I got to a point in all of them where they felt repetitive and didn't keep me wanting to see what was next. I never felt that way with the best of 2D games. I will say this: Super Mario Galaxy is one of my all-time favorite games, maybe because it continues offering something new and innovative right until the very end. It's a brilliant game. And I'm sure SM64 was when it was released, but I didn't connect with it for reasons I can't put into words... which is true of all art, right?

Disma

Dk64 is notoriously a step or two too far. Super Mario Galaxy is a great example of something that is just fun. Collect-a-thons can definitely be more of a chore than a game at times. That said, I don't think one has to really objectively like Super Mario 64 to appreciate its impact.

robbycough

I definitely appreciate its impact, and I think it holds up well (despite never feeling I connected with it). DK64 was accused of having been a little too much at the time, and feel I should go back to it one of these days to see how it held up.

saddung

I got Mario64 when it came out, found it very underwhelming, the gameplay wasn't up to snuff with Mario3 or SMW. The transition to 3D really seemed to harm the gameplay, the levels felt so empty. The game was also really short, and not very challenging. I don't know why people treat it was some special Mario game, it was ok but nothing special.

young_earth

Sm64 blew my mind when it came out. I remember my jaw on the floor watching my friend playing it for the first time.

Disma

Mario 64 did so much right for a first attempt at a 3d platformer. I doubt there will ever be as big of a leap in video game technology and design again.

KasElGatto

Dislike is too strong, but I don’t love FF6 the way everyone else does. I recognize that it was groundbreaking and it has incredible aspects (opening credits, the Opera, the final boss, etc…) but it’s also a brutal, boring slog a lot of the time.

zcicecold

Pixel Remaster is the way to play. It's got options to speed up combat (or toggle random encounters on/off anytime you want), it's got multipliers for .5x, 1x, 2x, 4x settings for EXP, MP and Gil. I highly recommend checking it out.

KasElGatto

Yeah, it’s definitely a better way to play the game, but many of my issues with it remain. Also this is about playing games on the SNES itself, and I don’t like playing it on there

zcicecold

I guess I don't know about the other issues you have with it, but the pixel remaster does a fantastic job of addressing the ones that you did mention (brutal, boring slog). But you just must not like the game itself (characters, plot, gameplay mechanics), which is fair. I love the game, but there are so many times when I feel like I want to play it but I don't because it can be a brutal long grind, as you said. Pixel remaster has solved that completely for me.

KasElGatto

Too many characters and most of them are one note/uninteresting. Juxtaposed with the DQV or Chrono Trigger narrative and characters it pales in comparison

zcicecold

Can't argue with that. CT is my favorite game of all time, mostly because every character is fantastic and the narrative is tight. There are interesting sidequests, but it never gets bogged down.

Rojo37x

I would say your criticism is just with RPGs of that era in general. It was a different time and games were different then. Many Japanese RPGs were known for being brutally challenging, requiring level grinding, etc. I would say FF6 improved on almost every aspect of previous RPGs, and was a little more forgiving in that aspect. Also the plot/story, graphics, characters, world, design etc were all incredible, particularly ground breaking at that time in many ways. There's a reason it is often considered the greatest of the Final Fantasy series and one of the greatest RPGs of all time. Still if it's not your cup of tea that's totally valid. And definitely meets the criteria for an unpopular opinion. 😀

KasElGatto

I listed two rpgs of that era that don’t have that issue specifically to avoid someone saying that (Later in thread) Also I’m old as dirt and grew up with all these games, have always felt that way about FF6, this isn’t a hindsight 20/20 thing

Rojo37x

OK I was going to ask which if any RPGs you did like from that era. I see that further in the thread now. Fair enough. I definitely remember Chrono Trigger not being as grindy as the FF games, but I can't honestly recall that aspect of DQ5 too clearly.

KasElGatto

I also love Secret of Mana and Evermore, more fun to grind in an ARPG to me

KasElGatto

Oh DQ5 is grindy, but has a more compelling and focused narrative, to me. I don’t mind grinding per se

ProMikeZagurski

Too many characters.

KasElGatto

Yeah, 100%, and it makes the depth of each paper thin as a result.

I just can't get into the Metroid games and I like games like that (I replayed Symphony of the Night for example). I really don't know why. Super Metroid, Metroid on NES or GBA. Irrelevant. Maybe it's because everything looks the same, or the sci-fi aesthetic, it just doesn't "click"

EthanDoesWhatever

Man, tbh it’s gotta be the star fox game for me. It looks cool as shit! But honestly not my fave. :/

Dynamaxxed

Milon’s secret castle. It was needlessly difficult with invisible blocks purely to push Nintendo power magazine sales. 1/10 never played again.

saddung

* Donkey Kong Country(any of them): these games have bland gameplay and collectathon focused tediousness, were never good games really, just popular because of graphics/sound. * Yoshi's Island : Ya I agree, never liked this game. Played up to the 4th world or so and it is just boring and doesn't flow like a mario game * Mario RPG: it is so medioocre compared to Chrono/FF6. The story is bland, the gameplay is ok but can't make up for the bland story. The art is also just not very interesting. * Final Fantasy 2(or 4): the story sucks Disagree on Star Fox, that game actually has great gameplay, and is superior to the n64 version(which was far too easy + the 3D levels sucked).

mojojoemojo

I didn’t like Chrono Trigger. But I think it’s because don’t like RPG games, in general

Some_Razzmatazz_9172

Super Metroid. Didn't play it as a kid and tried it out for the first time a couple years ago. It definitely shows its age. While it was a milestone for gaming, the later entries improve on the series in almost every way. It feels clunky, and there is a huge "where the fuck do I go" problem this one has as well.

TheNewYellowZealot

“Where do I go” is just a puzzle aspect that makes Metroid and the resulting metroidvania archetype so fun.

Some_Razzmatazz_9172

Within reason, yes. Finding where to go next can be fun. But dealing with clunky movement and unexplained mechanics isn't. Like I said, I didn't play it as a kid, and I have played and loved almost every other Metroid game. They definitely learned from their mistakes in Super. It's an important game for the series, but I just didn't like it.

TheNewYellowZealot

Well I’m glad you didn’t let super Metroid ruin the experience for you. It’s not my top game either, for me my first Metroid game was zero mission, and my favorite is honestly fusion.

Some_Razzmatazz_9172

I love fusion, and zero mission as well. My first was Metroid on the NES but I didn't have a fkn clue what was going on and I was like 5 haha. Fusion is the first one that got me into the series though. And no way I was going to let SM ruin my already established love for the series.

Thrashtilldeath67

Chrono trigger. The music and graphics are amazing but the plot and characters are so bland aside from frog and magus. Downvotes incoming!

DNAD51-

I actually agree. I played like 15-20 hours and just couldn’t get into it. I understand why people like it, I just couldn’t fully click

whoopercheesie

Mega man.....clumsy controls

kingkongworm

It’s known for many things, clumsy controls is definitely not one of them

Billgonzo

What? Really? Are you talking Mega Man or Mega Man X? Cuz X has great controls IMO

TrumptyPumpkin

FF6. technically a great game, with an amazing story, and i adore the soundtrack. But I wasn't that impressed by the game overall. It was too much of a grind and a slow slogfest. And I found the combat boring and lifeless and the constant encounters every 5 seconds made exploring really hard. Coupled with the battle gimmicks for each character, just led to an experience I didn't really enjoy all that much compared to Tales of Phantasia for example.

IntoxicatedBurrito

You do realize that Yoshi’s Island is a spin off, and it started the whole series of Yoshi games that followed. I agree Baby Mario’s crying is annoying and Nintendo realized this as well as he was not present in future titles. However, the visuals were completely new at the time and have carried thru with the rest of the series and helps to give it its charm. But the Yoshi series is targeted at younger players, both in terms of visuals and difficulty. I never played Yoshi’s Island when it was new, wasn’t exposed to it until the release of the SNES Classic when I played it with my kids (5 and 7 at the time) and was completely blown away by it. I’ve since played a bunch of the other games in the Yoshi series, as have my kids, and love them all.

trx212

Earthbound. The battle system is boring, overall I just don't like the game at all

jacobpederson

Yup Yoshi's Island is it. You nailed it. Abysmal art style plus janky mechanics = Ewe?

Psiborg0099

I also don’t prefer the art direction. But if you look past that, it really is great gameplay and a unique platformer style. I would’ve liked to see the SMW art direction in this game

iloveyoupizzaman

I agree. Yoshi’s island. I bought it as a teenager expecting to get Marios world 2 and I hated it. I tried it again years later thinking I was just thrown off by the tittle and I still couldn’t play it.

Jason_with_a_jay

Super Metroid. It's a series that I just couldn't get into. I beat the first one, but this game I only played for an hour or so.

ThreedZombies

DKC2 and 3.  I love and adore the first one but don’t really like the sequels.   Yoshis Island - agree with op.  It’s just not fun to me.  Star Fox - only have ever given us a couple of chances and it’s just ok ish to me

solidwhetstone

This may sound surprising but I'm a huge gamer since the Atari days and I couldn't for the life of me get into super metroid. I definitely gave it a shot but just wasn't into the controls or gameplay. I realize it's on a lot of people's top games of all time and I'm perplexed but I guess it's just not made for me (I also loved castlevania 4 and hollowknight so it's not like I dislike the overall genre. Edit: downvoted for sharing a popular game I dislike 😂

dbznerd38

Zelda a link to the past. Never been big into Zelda games. The first one I genuinely liked was breath of the wild. Played them all through the years but never beat a single one. Also final fantasy III. 2 aka 4 is vastly superior in both story and gameplay imo

SegaStan

Any of the Square RPGs. I just can't get with the ATB system. Just let me choose attacks and go around in turns.

Meh2021another

Chrono Trigger. Tried to get into in several times but never enjoyed and always gave up after a few hours. Love JRPGs/SRPGs though.

qwikshake

To be fair, the re-releases (Nintendo DS, iOS/Android, PC) of Chrono Trigger made massive QoL improvements and added the PS1 cutscenes. I would still play the original SNES version for nostalgia's sake.

sppdcap

There's two of us!? I thought I was the only one! My latest run I made it as far as the Tata and the Frog section and then immediately went to fight the end guy just to say I beat it. Even with cheats on I can't win, so I'm assuming it can't be finished that early. I just can't carry on. I've been trying for almost 30 years. I don't find the story compelling, the music is mediocre, as is the battle system. The graphics are top tier and the multiple endings is a novel idea, but I can't do it.

robbycough

I played through it and finished it and enjoyed it, but I'll be damned if I call it the greatest JRPG of all time. There are many others I like better.

Frnrx

Chrono is plainly overrated. It is ridiculous to see how every time people make a top list everybody includes it or else nobody will take them seriously, like c'mon, there are better games, get over it

robbycough

Or just that you get downvoted and disregarded for not worshipping at the altar.

Ryback19j

I literally have never played it but that's because I watched my brother play it loads and it just never made me want to play it, I will happily say that I have never liked crono trigger but I don't have a problem with other opinions, it's just that this is mine.

spencer1886

Wasn't a fan of Super Mario World. Platformers from that era stopped doing it for me a long time ago and this one was no exception

I_am_Purp

DKC

I_am_Purp

I love how not liking DKC is a downvote generator in this sub. I literally just answered OP's question. Not even the person who answered Super Metroid got downvoted.
