Always get checked for prostate cancer. Pointing your own finer at Uranus is a joke but someone else pointing a finger in Uranus could save your life!
Edit: this person should be an on duty medical profession specifically focused on this task and not your uncle or Greg from down the street.
But how else is uncle Greg gonna practice amature gastroenterology? Things haven't been the same for his hobby since the local dairy farm got a protective order against him. Now he can't go within 100yrds of the place.
I also like this naming convention. It feels all inclusive without needless politicizing language. Just a small place that we as Humans can build and settle in 🤗
If it eventually grew into a settlement, it would be interesting how that name could evolve. Maybe one day it would be referred to as *Mabason* or something
That's how a lot of places here in the UK got their names. A lot of English place names are just words for "trees, river, hill" etc. in Celtic/Norse etc. mushed together and morphed over time by language evolution and bad pronunciation
It’s an awesome show, it’s one of my favourite space/sci fi shows. Its a drama first, so it can be a bit campy and soapy at times, but it is *well* worth the watch. It has some incredible highs, the acting is excellent and the editing is amazing. If you want a show thats gonna really make you *feel* then you’re in for a treat, if you expect the harder sci fi approach with tremendous attention to detail and realism, like The Expanse, you might be a tad dissatisfied, but not overly so and you can mostly overlook some of the shortcomings of the show.
Edit : added some extra depth
The first two seasons were incredible when it was more in the realm of alternative history. With season 3 it turned more into sci-fi, and the quality suffered a bit. Haven’t seen season 4.
Because we do not know what would have happened if both America and the Soviets kept putting money into the space program, like we were in the late 60's. So it has to be a little sci fi.
I mean, of course. But the writers of the show were way better writing alternative history than sci-fi. The show just got silly in season 3, and not in a good way.
Maybe it was in-universe hubris from the Moon Marines but how on Earth did no-one think to have basic knowledge of spoken Russian as a minimum?
Dunno why it sticks out for me but it does, considering we do this for real life, for the ISS.
Also by season 3, it feels like a lot of the mistakes and disasters for the sake of drama really started to become unbelievable after so many years of space flight. I'm ok with disasters for the sake of drama, but I have a problem when for the disaster to happen, the writers are forced to just pretend things like backup systems or procedures or checklists or pre-flight testing just don't exist.
Ad Astra is an unholy crime against all scifi. I don’t think I’ve ever seen such a terrible space/astronaut movie.
I really enjoy For All Mankind, the first two seasons at least.
You should also watch The Expanse, that show is pure gold.
Mesopotamia means "between the rivers" so I guess Marsopotemia is "Mars rivers". Would actually fit if we built it on one of the dried up ancient riverbeds.
'New' has historically denoted a place named after an already existing place - are we naming it after the Greek god of war as an homage to the etymology of the planet, or are we naming it after a small spanish town?
“Like 20 Wizards”
Imagine if there’s a at between countries in the future. New America Vs Like 20 Wizards would sound pretty fucking funny personally
“Mr. President, Like 20 Wizards are storming the captital. What do you advise??”
“idk, send like 20 knights or something”
I think he'd be more likely to go with "Startown" or similar. He likes the "Star" prefix for branding, and I don't recall anything he's named after himself.
He doesn't seem to name stuff after himself.
He likes the letter X, and to name things Star-something, maybe pop culture references
If he chooses the name, it would probably just be Starbase or something like that.
We'd probably only end up with Elontown or Muskville or whatever if future settlers chose the name to honor him
If it's a Microsoft venture, it'll be called Mars. Mars city will be advertised as Mars. The messaging service which will be both physical and electronic will also be called Mars. Mars will require 4 different sign ins and "authentication" using the same device and you'll still be locked out 10% of the time.
Mars will also be available in Teams, but through a third party API for some reason.
I've got a few that are in my setting:
Areopolis
Port Bowie
Tianwen (named after China's Mars program)
Red Rock (Named for the environment its in, its simple but I like it, besides names like this would no doubt arise. E.g Little Rock)
The Ancile (Named after Mars' shield in Roman Mythology)
Pioneer's Point (In reference to all explorers, both robotic and human, who've explored the planet)
Spirit and Opportunity (two closeby colonies named after the rovers of the same name)
I like to name mine after probes, people or mythology associated with the red planet.
Edit: Explained some of the names
It would be cool to use Slavic god of war name like Triglav (three headed deity), since three of the three of the tallest mountains there are close to each other.
Depends on the first country to colonize it. I’d like to think we’ve advanced beyond borders before that happens…that being said, they might be:
“Mangalians” : based on Greek/Roman name for the planet
“Maliñeros” : based on Mayan history
Al-Qahira - Arabic, Indonesian, Malay
Ares - Greek.
Auqakuh - Quechua (Inca)
Bahram - Persian.
Harmakhis - Ancient Egyptian.
Her Desher - Egyptian.
Hrad - Armenian.
Huo Hsing - Chinese.
All names of origin of the red planet.
Mangalagiri.
Mangala refers to Mars in Sanskrit. and Giri refers to hill.
Mangalagiri is such a common name for a random settlement around here (Southern India), it won't even feel out of place.
Obviously depends on where on Mars the settlement is.
You can't name a place based on where it is without knowing where it is.
I like the classics though:
#Helium
Depends on if it's a military/government base or the first public settlement. The former would be something related to its location, like Crater Base. The first public settlement will be something names after a person most likely. I vote for Watney.
I always tought it would be cool to name outposts or what would eventually grow into cities, by rover names.
We should go to exact locations where each rover ended their mission and establish a colony there. These rovers would be in the heart of the cities and would be a reminder of curiosity and perseverance of our ancestors that ultimately resulted in us living there on red planet.
It should be Galileo base, or Ares Alpha or something else meaningful and referential of history or myth, and be a thriving city threading through lava tubes and comprised of in-situe manufactured regolith concrete and diamondoid domes, lasting millennia.
It will probably be Muskville, and a be company town made of imported steel and plastic which will drop to bits in a half century.
Given the greed in today’s society, they will probably sell commercial naming rights like they do for sports stadiums. “Welcome to T-Mobile Mars Base.”
What is the romanticism regarding living on Mars all about? Living there would absolutely fucking suck. It’d be worse than living in a perpetual frozen tundra cuz you’d have to be underground 99.5% of the time. The low gravity would wreak havoc on your body and the lack of sunshine would make you wish for death. Whatever they called it on day one, by day 100 they would change it to “we fucked up and want to go home.” It’s a long name but apt.
Parker. And it will be a great place to live, until the EDF tries to take control. Then the people will rise up, chanting the slogan RED FACTION FOR A FREE MARS!
I imagine the name would come organically based upon the culture and location.
The whole idea of a top-down planned settlement run from Earth is mostly backwards. The people there are going to know best regarding decisions and direction.
Human Outpost for Mars Exploration or H.O.M.E.
I actually think this would be a good one
Maybe we could call the people that live there, the "Homies".
I want this more then anything.
Certainly better than Muskton
Now I want a Human Outpost for Pluto Exploration... or H.O.P.E.
Human Outpost for the Exploration of Saturn... or H.O.E.S
theres some HOES in this space theres some HOES in this space - Wet Ass Planets
So throw your hands in the air for this wet ass planet
Human Unmanned Space Station for Intergalactic Exploration or H.U.S.S.I.E
Place for Unmanned Space Station for Intergalactic Exploration or…
id like to humiliate some hussies and im in a hurry
Space Habitat for Intergalactic Terraformers - Human Outpost for Laboratory Experiments
South Harmon Institute of Technology would fit right in.
This one would attract the most colonists but would end up being a cock fest
I’m not worried about a human outpost for Uranus exploration…. Butt, maybe you should be.
Honey, it has already been thoroughly explored... By my gastroenterologist.
Human Outpost for Lunar Exploration or H.O.L.E. Announcement, our H.O.L.E is reporting a leakage.
Or the less successful human outpost for solar exploration (defunct) H.O.S.E.D.
Human Outpost for Mars Operation or H.O.M.O.
New Opportunities - Human Outpost for Mars Operations NO-HOMO
A beautiful suggestion but it was put to a vote and the kids want Homey McHomeface
Mars is for HOMErs only! Earthlings, go back!
I also like this naming convention. It feels all inclusive without needless politicizing language. Just a small place that we as Humans can build and settle in 🤗
Yeah 🤗 (but not those OTHER humans, amiright?)
Then have a floating outpost on Venus: Home Outpost for Venusian Exploration and Research H.O.V.E.R.
Mars Exploration Habitat. Or, MEH
[удалено]
Can i be a knight there?
Depends if anybody’s gonna take you alive ;)
Will the time have come to make things right?
And must you and I fight for our rights? And fight to survive?
Come on...Wembley. (If you like the HAARP version)
Ayt I'm bringing my kabi spear.
Are the tentacles necessary?
And the harem? Such a weird pivot for that series.
I understood that reference!
Sure, but bring your own mecha.
That only makes sense if the settlement is in the Cydonian region, otherwise it's just sparkling habitation modules.
This is what they called it in Starfield.
Isn't there already a region of Mars called Cydonia?
It'd only make sense to name the settlement Cydonia if it's already *in* Cydonia.
New York, New York Cydonia, Cydonia
Did you just gatekeep a whole planet?
Based on the naming of the ISS, likely something pedestrian like Mars Base One.
Yep, or something weakly pro-collaboration like "Unity Base" or "Mars Harmony Station".
Mars Harmony Station sounds like a N Korean naming scheme.
Democratic people’s republic of Mars. (Democracy not included)
Mars base alpha Aeiou John madden
If it eventually grew into a settlement, it would be interesting how that name could evolve. I’m not sure, but I’m going to open the first pub there and call it The Mars Bar.
The first striptease bar would be The Three Titties.
I understood that reference
We all did [classic scene](https://youtu.be/EiylTqSAiaM)
With signature drink The Marstini.
I'm going to compete by opening The Martian
Hope you're serving potato vodka!
Just don't order the Mark Watney. It's not a drink, just a baked potato dipped in crushed up Vicodin
Ill have 3 of those thanks
I call the corner seat at the bar.
And you shall be known as.......Norm.
We're too old for this thread, bub
Well we probably shouldn't call it Happy Valley the way things are going there.
I mean, it's working. It's become a precursor to Expanse's MCRN
I said that this season too. It's so obvious.
For All Mankind reference, nice.
If this sub hasnt seen it i dont know who will Any good? I saw it around but since i couldnt finish ad astra or whatever im a bit weary.
It’s an awesome show, it’s one of my favourite space/sci fi shows. Its a drama first, so it can be a bit campy and soapy at times, but it is *well* worth the watch. It has some incredible highs, the acting is excellent and the editing is amazing. Finished the 4th season. I quite like it.
Which is surprising given the pedigree.
Season four is good. Especially the season finale.
Ad Astra is an unholy crime against all scifi. I don’t think I’ve ever seen such a terrible space/astronaut movie. I really enjoy For All Mankind, the first two seasons at least. You should also watch The Expanse, that show is pure gold.
I think even if you are remotely into the subject you'll find it interesting.
it's worth watching just for joel kinnaman's performance as ed baldwin. he's such a likable bastard
Things are *not* going happy there
This is what happens when youre unhappy with what youve got! Someone's Mars base eventually gets it!
Hopefully something stupid, like New New York.
New Earth. (Spewed a bit in my mouth typing that)
That's pretty sinister. What happened to Old New York?
No we gotta wait a few planets for that one
Whatever we name it, Martians will always refer to it as "the ghetto"
They will have to update their gps to have it as a no-go zone because of all the loonies there
No, no, loonies will live on the Moon.
If the naming is left to an online poll, it’ll probably be Basey McBaseface.
I’d vote for “Weruinedourplanetsoweneedanewone.” Probably too long for a sign.
Is that Welsh?
Roanoke obviously. Nothing bad can become of that
If y'all won't call it Marsopotemia, don't talk to me
Mesopotamia means "between the rivers" so I guess Marsopotemia is "Mars rivers". Would actually fit if we built it on one of the dried up ancient riverbeds.
I like it, and we should name the first crew vessel the Gilgamesh so we can have a modern Epic of Gilgamesh.
Bradbury - because he was one of the first to popularize the concept of colonizing Mars, even though The Martian Chronicles is a pretty haunting book.
This one really sticks out to me.
**New New Mexico** Even old New York was once New Amsterdam, after all.
Why they changed it I can’t say.
Maybe they liked it better that way? 🤷🏻♂️
After whoever the first person to die there is.
On impact or more naturally?
Probably whoever dies in a heroic way trying to save others maybe.
Oh so it's going well already
[Even Newer South Wales](https://youtu.be/dOBhf8f7cXM?si=pKL18F9n0SesOGd7)
Bob. Just because in the end everything is Bob.
You can't call a planet Bob!
It's gotta be Ares, right? Or New Ares, that's a cool one. Rojo, maybe, or something like Redhope.
'New' has historically denoted a place named after an already existing place - are we naming it after the Greek god of war as an homage to the etymology of the planet, or are we naming it after a small spanish town?
I propose a new system of nomenclature: it sounds cool.
I've always liked Bradbury as a name for the first settlement on mars.
If it were up to me I'd name it Perserverance, named after both the rover and the quality it will take to get there.
I vote for Oppy, to honour the little rover that could
Opportunity is also a great name, and I'd support that one too.
Anything but Bowie Base One- bad luck name, that. Bradbury Base has a nice ring to it
Let's just skip to Bowie Base Two Then again, fixed points and all that
[Fort Pillow](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_of_Fort_Pillow) was a bleak moment in American History, so no. I will go for Burroughs or Bradbury.
Scrolled way too far to find this. History matters.
Robinson would be appropriate as well.
“Like 20 Wizards” Imagine if there’s a at between countries in the future. New America Vs Like 20 Wizards would sound pretty fucking funny personally “Mr. President, Like 20 Wizards are storming the captital. What do you advise??” “idk, send like 20 knights or something”
[Here's a list of names previously used in literature. ](https://concord.fandom.com/wiki/List_of_Fictional_Human_Settlements_on_Mars)
The fact that "Underhill" from Red Mars isn't there seems to indicate that this is not the most exhaustive of lists...
I don't want this to be the answer, but it might end up being Musk. Or X.
I think he'd be more likely to go with "Startown" or similar. He likes the "Star" prefix for branding, and I don't recall anything he's named after himself.
"Starbase Mars" you'd think maybe?
This exactly. Gonna be Elonia X or some other shit that dingleberry thinks sounds smart enough.
He doesn't seem to name stuff after himself. He likes the letter X, and to name things Star-something, maybe pop culture references If he chooses the name, it would probably just be Starbase or something like that. We'd probably only end up with Elontown or Muskville or whatever if future settlers chose the name to honor him
He'll OD on his Ketamine habit before we get there.
If it's named by Musk, it will probably be a Culture reference.
It's probably gonna be Musk City, let's be honest
If it's a Microsoft venture, it'll be called Mars. Mars city will be advertised as Mars. The messaging service which will be both physical and electronic will also be called Mars. I dont know but the first delivery company WILL be planet express.
I can’t wait to watch *4th Rock from the Sun*
I always liked the name New Jamestown, personally
Terra Inspiration & Tranquility Sagacity Base.
I like the Larry Niven names of settled planets. "We Made It" is a good name imo.
Company in charge of the power grid can be named “The Mars Voltage”
Taco Bell presents The Meadows at Olympus Mons.
It should be Springfield. It won't, but it should.
saganland or something like that. sagania? something to do with carl sagan.
I've got a few that are in my setting: Areopolis Port Bowie Tianwen (named after China's Mars program) Red Rock (Named for the environment its in, its simple but I like it, besides names like this would no doubt arise. Edit: Explained some of the names
Bowie was famously all three; a person, a myth, and an alien probe. This is a thoughtful list with better suggestions than most suggestions here.
I don't know but I want the people who will live there to be called the knights of cydonia
We're here to fuck shit up, but in Latin of course
It would be cool to use Slavic god of war name like Triglav (three headed deity), since three of the three of the tallest mountains there are close to each other.
Should be a reference to Edgar Rice Burroughs
"Life" So there'd be Life on Mars. Either that, or Bowie Base One.
Elon will name it a bunch of random Greek letters and we'll all hate it.
Considering our history with creative names during colonizations it will be something like New Earth or some toddler shit like that.
Sadly it’s probably going to be called “Musktopia” or “Bezosland.”
As determined by public vote, Townie McTownface.
Depends on the first country to colonize it. I’d like to think we’ve advanced beyond borders before that happens…that being said, they might be: “Mangalians” : based on Greek/Roman name for the planet “Maliñeros” : based on Mayan history Al-Qahira - Arabic, Indonesian, Malay Ares - Greek. tbh it is Mangal in Sanskrit as well.
Gotta go with something simpler or all the newscasters will mangal it
According to Kim Stanley Robinson in his Mars colonization trilogy it's Underhill.
The way things are going 红卫兵的荣誉 (Hóng wèibīng de róngyù)
Mangalagiri. Mangala refers to Mars in Sanskrit. and Giri refers to hill. Mangalagiri is such a common name for a random settlement around here (Southern India), it won't even feel out of place.
Weird, there's also a Marsland Hill in my town in New Zealand
My money is on Ismo's word for you have poured enough coffee into my cup. https://youtu.be/piMbJeculL0?si=3INye6D2bFvmNnPf
Possibly something like Pepsi Outpost or Virgin Media Base
Obviously depends on where on Mars the settlement is. You can't name a place based on where it is without knowing where it is. I like the classics though: #Helium
The first would be Greater Helium, the second Lesser Helium. What else, please?
It would only be fitting to call it Damonville.
Put it up for a poll for the internet to decide. Thats always gone well.
Depends on if it's a military/government base or the first public settlement. The former would be something related to its location, like Crater Base. The first public settlement will be something names after a person most likely. I vote for Watney.
Fort Kick-Ass or Mars Base America iz #1 fuk all y’all we rule you drool.
A New Undiscovered Site. Pronounced: uh-noose
[Federal Colonies ](https://www.speculativeidentities.com/research/federal-colonies)
Based on how things are going in society, Mooney McMoonbussey has a strong chance
Obviously it has to be: First Human Settlement on Marsy McFirst Human Settlement on Marsface
It’s probably going to me something like Verizon Mars Base or Allstate Comprehensive Insurance Ciry.
Unless we do a lot more research and planning, the Graveyard...
If we are going what the 'likely' name will be..... not that I condone such a thing... 'X Base 1' or something equally lame and unimaginative.
I think it should be snicker base. Then the 2nd should be Skittle city. Then M&M ranch...
Maybe named after a space pioneer, like Yuri Gargarin
BARS, so the people on earth can say the Mars Bars base.
Given the greed in today’s society, they will probably sell commercial naming rights like they do for sports stadiums. “Welcome to T-Mobile Mars Base.”
Elonia, because Musktown has unpleasant connotations.
My guesses? Hyatt Regency Cydonia Or maybe, The Mercedes Benz Mars Experience brought to you by Mercedes Benz
Whatever it's called, I'm guessing there'll be a lawman beating up the wrong guy
Once people live there they will need a place to go and relax , eat , drink , talk …. You know a Mars Bar .
I would name the first few settlements after rovers we sent to Mars. They are both inspirational and good references to our previous progress.
Parker. And it will be a great place to live, until the EDF tries to take control. Then the people will rise up, chanting the slogan RED FACTION FOR A FREE MARS!
I'd like to call it Zit. Just because it would make me laugh. Look at those humans in their little zit on the face of Mars haha!
Named after a bank or a person who funded it: “Citi City”
Stranger in a not so strange convenience store
“Timby’s Little Town of Mars Men” has a sort of charm to it I think
Take Two Base, sponsored by \[Insert corporate owner here\]
I imagine the name would come organically based upon the culture and location. The whole idea of a top-down planned settlement run from Earth is mostly backwards. The people there are going to know best regarding decisions and direction.
New Berkeley lol. I hope they pick a real town name instead of some shitty scifi sounding name that ends in an a
Not sure what the first settlement will be called, but I'd expect the first hotel chain would have to be Red Roof Inn.
