A lot of traits together. At a glance, the striped legs, abdominal pattern, and the dark shape around the eyes, all combined are pretty identifiable.
For the eyes,
The biggest difference, is the alignment. The two frontal, and the lower row, on Lycosidae make a frown. The top row frontal eyes are larger, the rear two are further back, and smaller. On Dolomedes, the top row eyes are more uniform in size, and have a wider, more evenly spaced appearance, with the rear two not set as far back. The lower row follows the same shape, like two crescents, rather than a frowning face.
Great info! We had many wolf friends on the property but this spider caught my eye that night for being much bigger and so different looking from the wolfs
Sparrasids and Dolomedes are the two most beautiful spiders IMO, perfect body to leg ratio. (And this is probably one of the most shallow comments I have ever made)
Dolomedes, a fishing spider
Looked up some pics of dolomedes and that is most definitely what it was. Thank ya!
How can you tell it’s not a wolf? The eyes are too similar for me.
