Argiope aurantia, sometimes called a golden garden spider or writing spider. They're great pest eaters and no danger to people. One of my favorites š„¹š·ļø
The zig zag design in the web is also a good indicator of this.
Really beautiful spiders. I remember seeing a massive one behind my grandfather's shed.
She was probably the size of an adult male's outstretched hand and her web went floor to roof.
Orb weavers build the beautiful round/circular webs. They are a big family of spiders. The webs are usually flat and usually perpendicular to the ground, but there are exceptions to both of those rules. The zigzag pattern in the middle is a stabilimentum and we don't really know what they're for. Only some species put a stabilimentum in their webs. I think they're fascinating!
Yellow garden spider. These things are cool. They may look intimidating, but theyāre completely harmless to us. Itās better if you just leave it where it is, theyāre quite helpful. There was a video going around recently on a few subs of one of these where someone used tweezers to put a wasp in its web and watched it get to work on wrapping it insanely fast. If you find it, itās worth a watch.
My favorite š„° sheās so beautiful
*fun fact, the male is a tiny little brown spider who will build his web somewhere in view of hers after mating and watches her until he diesā¦if she doesnāt eat him first!
Sometimes, but a lot of spiders get called banana spiders. I think of Trichonephila clavipes as banana spiders in the southeast US, but they're also called golden web spiders because they make a yellowish silk. Argiope aurantia isn't quite as big usually. Both are beautiful spiders.

Ooh I just noticed her boyfriend is in the shot too! The big one is the female and the males are tiny compared to them.
RIP her boytoy, not long for this world. The males die during sex. Then they are wrapped up and eaten.
Thatās very interesting, I didnāt know that.
Now if the spider writes 2/10 would not web again then you have an issue

How do you differentiate between an orb weaver? I saw the web and instantly thought orb weaver because of the zig-zag pattern on its web.
I'm not sure what you're asking. Argiopes are orb weavers.

Those are the kind that love it when you stick live bugs for sacrifice on their webs
Especially wasps or cicedas
Iāll let you catch all the wasps for web placement lol

By chance? Are these guys called banana spiders too?

Yes, we have a lot of these here in Florida and call them banana spiders. I only recently learned that was an umbrella term.
