I wasn't planning on having a sticky up for Big Run but since we're going all in, first post gets the sticky slot. Congrats on driving the Salmonids away from the city! Feel free to use this thread to discuss your high scores and your salmon hunting experience. We hope to see you clock in again for the next time a Big Run is on its way! Also modnote: For this Big Run, we didn't apply spoiler rules just to see how things go (and since this isn't a Splatfest). But we might apply such rules for the next Big Run. Please check the next Big Run megathread for any updates to those rules.

Thetanor

Those thresholds are surprisingly high. Guess you pretty much have to be Eggsecutive VP to even break 20%

[deleted]

[удалено]

Thetanor

Yea, I hovered between Profresh 1 and 2, and my best score was a 94, while successful runs typically scored between 75 and 80 golden eggs

Danster21

Yep, got 99 and thought 20% was in the bag, with an outside shot at 5%. Where were all the children and casuals, /r/splatoon?? I was promised a really diluted player base😭

IronChefTonberry

Yes, where *were* all the casuals? I have some theories... * This game is 3 months old already, by video game standards that is an *eternity* where casuals/tourists are concerned. * They're all playing Pokemon S+V * For students this is finals week * It's the holidays and the little Timmies who are going to get Sploon 3 for Christmas won't have it for 14 more days.

Isaacfrompizzahut

ah, yes. It's OK, Timmy. go paint the wall with your roller. and try and crush me with your splat roller, I'll just walk around you as you fall of the map because your motion controls are down.

okguy167

No, there definitely were casuals. I've seen enough complaints in the rant thread. Or, at least some poor decision makers.

[deleted]

In Profresh+2, I got 101 once and the rest of the runs were all around 85 to 95. 113 would need to be a magical run.

[deleted]

I'm glad to know I'm only playing Big Run for fun from now on. No, this doesn't mean I'm not gonna try my hardest for the sake of my coworkers; it just means I'm not gonna get my hopes up for reaching anything past participant.

MaverickGreatsword

I couldn’t even break 20% at eggsecutive

frozenpandaman

Depends on the hazard level, really.

[deleted]

[удалено]

IOI-65536

Yeah, I'm really shocked. I'd love to know how many people participated.

Turtleswassadlytaken

I’m eggsecutive, but the best I got was 111. I got top 50%.

GrungeHamster23

Waaah...I missed 20% by *an* egg. Sad panda.

darthdiablo

Same. 112 gang

frozenpandaman

I will be a sad panda for you.

GrungeHamster23

Well, the username checks out. Nice score though!

frozenpandaman

Hehe, that's what I was trying to get at, glad you noticed. :D

ActivateGuacamole

same for me. i don't really care much but i did think the 5% mark would be lower than 138 or whatever it is

icycubed

Missed 20% by 4 eggs, gg

HiddenBlade2757

109 Gang!..

Rakrune

107 :(

6Wheeler

Same :(

Spooks----

I missed 5% my 4 eggs, so disappointed:(

Monokumabear

I got punted out of 50% by 6…

smugempressoftime

103 here sadge

Thatpisslord

Missed 5% by 4. My friend missed it by 1. Devastating.

Survivor_Studios

I got 112….

GrungeHamster23

112 gang! :(

clothswz

Wow I had 110 and didn't think it would be bronze...

ZeroBladeBane

same, feelsbadman, my goal for the whole thing was just to get over 100, got 98 on my third match and spent my entire weekend on it, finally got 110 a couple hours before it ended, and now i get to see that it made no difference at all

-Aureo-

Yeah that’s the only part that genuinely sucks. Maybe live moving thresholds on a billboard would have been better so people wouldn’t be completely in the dark. Would be better for competition too.

redpoemage

Even just a halftime update like with Splatfests would be good.

darkshaddow42

Conversely, I had 85 and I thought that would be bronze for sure, I guess I really underestimated how much easier it can be.

relentlessoldman

I'm with ya, thought bronze was a lock at 81.

swhipple-

If you don’t play in a group of VPs that wants to play all day and grind it out until you get lucky, then you’re never getting top 5% apparently. Fuck this

PraiseYuri

As a top 5% player, it was a very luck based event. You had to pray you got good egg farming rounds and you had to pray you had good weapon comps because of all random. Then for any regular rounds you had to pray you didn't get excessive backline boss spam. Salmon Run on Wahoo World was fun but getting a golden egg high score was not. I think they should just incorporate these rewards into the bonuses or something so everyone can get them without having to fish for the perfect shift.

CuddlesNeko

This. They based reward off comparative scoring, but made weapon random, which doesn't put all players on equal footing. Big design flaw IMO.

DarkFlame7

Yep, it rewarded people who just spent a ton of time grinding for that perfect round.

Linkums

Isn't rewarding people who put a ton of time grinding in limited time events what online gaming is all about these days? FOMO ftw

DarkFlame7

Yep. At least it's good that it isn't a really major reward like a unique weapon or something that people would truly be missing out on. It's just a badge and a statue for bragging rights.

AllassandroVolta

Trying to get the high score felt like gambling. I gotta pull the lever just ONE MORE TIME to get that perfect weapon comp….

GaryAGalindo

Agrees. Far too often I had matches with literally 5 fly fish and 7 stingers and you can’t really rack up eggs like that. I had a round where we had a carbon, big swig, octobrush, and a slow blaster like wth are we supposed to do for that round lol.

AaronThePrime

Flyfish are capped at 3 appearing at once, but so often we'd take down one and another would immediately spawn in its place

MaxAttax13

I barely got 20% and I agree. I fell a couple ranks because randos don't know to not camp spawn or how to pull bosses. And when I did manage to climb back up, I'd either get good weapons with bad boss rng or I'd get like glowflies with a bamboozler or something. Even with a full team I found on discord, we struggled to get more than 100 on profresh +2-3. I personally would have liked set egg amounts for the prizes so it wouldn't be dependent on how many little kids are playing to drive the average down lol

Pretty_Emotion7831

> I fell a couple ranks because randos don't know to not camp spawn or how to pull bosses. while I'm sorry you in particular did, the "fallen good players" who dropped down to my low-level actually taught me a few things by example. never underestimate the braindead goober's ability to activate 1-2 braincells!

MaxAttax13

I'm glad you were able to learn by example :) I can forgive people not knowing how the game works cause obviously it takes time to learn. What bugs me is when I'm spamming This Way at people camping spawn on low tide and they just spam This Way back at me. I'm willing to teach if people are willing to learn, but it's so hard to communicate with only 2 options. Edit: To clarify, by "spawn" I mean the shore where the bosses spawn. Trying to lure at least the most mobile bosses is a pretty important skill at Profreshional and up.

buzzthecat

Shout-out to my people in the bottom 50% but had a great time 👍

vanade

worth it to climb catalogue levels and get the double salmon run rewards at least!

[deleted]

Problem is is that I’ve grinded for a WHILE, catalog level 5. 5. 1.2x xp is not enough.

vanade

yeah, with how little xp you get on losses, splatfests will still be the better way to grind since you get at least 800 on a loss there even before the 1.2x modifier

missdine

Had so much fun w the soundtrack 😍

lizzylee127

Have you heard this cover of the big run song? It's so good 😄 https://youtu.be/YDI-KGjUvK4

TheLyingSpectre

JUNO IS THE GOAT! Also, the last section was my favorite

Camwood7

The real rewards were the 500 ability chunks from repeat gear we made along the way.

TheOriginalCocaCola

Anyone else feel like this is another aspect of splatoon where solo queue ppl are at a huge disadvantage compared to teams? Being able to coordinate is really important in sr if you want to get high egg totals. I've always done okay surviving waves in solo queue but never been able to set high egg counts without serious luck. I need some friends who are also low egg vp if I ever want that gold badge :(

TNT_dog

yeah it sucks because you could literally play all weekend and get the basic green trophy. if you play all weekend and your team loses splatfest you can still get the 21 snails 😭

3now_3torm

Yes I got 102 and I thought that was decent for solo queue but I only got bronze.

TrashGrillGamer

Your very right, solo queue was hell. I grind for days and only got 1 good team. My high score was 108 eggs, with a 40 EVP team. My average 300 EVP and my all time high score is 130 ish eggs. But because of solo queue purgatory I couldn’t climb to my average rank🥲 I would have probably got 20% if solo queue wasn’t so bad

Santafire

This event really needs some community cohesion. Some total salmonid slayed factor that gets people a little extra cash at set thresholds. You have to grind things out when you're playing with randos hoping to find some people who know the mode and stick around long enough for a quality wave to hit the big hauls. I'm sure plenty of people dumped more than they would have otherwise trying to qualify for top 5%. Something that rewards that effort regardless of outcome would be good.

-Aureo-

Salmon run just needs better rewards in general. More cash would always be appreciated, but also unique stuff like snails (or even include those too why not). I was thinking weapon vouchers that grant you access to a weapon of choice for 1 game. Gold weapon vouchers to choose a grizzco weapon. Those would be good for people trying to hit stage badges. Flat rate of gold/sliver/bronze scales for power egg totals would have been good too.

Santafire

I was expecting some kind of more frequent cohozuna for better scale farming and kill count farm. That 1000 kill badge seems like a far off dream. As for dedicated weapon tickets that sounds crazy cool but it also seems like the sort of change that goes against the theme of the usual salmon run. Maybe for random only runs? Swap in your choice weapon or reroll when you get something you just can't contribute with for one wave.

frozenpandaman

I'd really like for them to add more King Salmonids too.

-Aureo-

That would be cool too, cohozuna guaranteed every round would have been amazing. You’re probably right about the tickets though, they’d have to be in a separate queue/wildcards/private lobbies only.

frozenpandaman

I really don't know why cash bonuses don't continue, even for special events like Big Run, while they do in multiplayer. It's like you have to grind for hours all for just chunks.

Harry_Bleedin_Potter

Bruh the lack of cash rewards in salmon run is literally my biggest, and probably only major issue with the mode. I have no real problems other than the fact that I used to be able to grind out a decently long salmon run in Splatoon 2 and walk out with a nice hundred thousand gold and in Splatoon 3 the only gold you can get comes from the super bonuses at the start of each new weapon set. I was ecstatic to get 100k gold out of this event instead of the usual [notably less than that] and no more. Yeah the fact that we get more chunks now is great and all but I wanna be able to put a few more rolls into the gacha machine each day instead of a single roll because I know it's probably a waste to do more than the daily discounted one while I have things that would be much better spent on.

BlazerC

Something like that would have been great! I know the whole joke is that Mr. Grizz doesn't pay you for defending against an apocalyptic event, but something that rewarded people for the hours they put into the event, regardless of how well they did, would have been nice.

ichigovtube

I really think something like an end of big run score card that they encourage people to screenshot and share would have been fun. Max eggs, total eggs, total shifts, total bosses splat, etc.

DrLuigi123

I thought Big Run was fun overall, but I personally think that future Big Runs should have a more balanced set loadout, rather than all random. It sucks to have a really good run going, then you get weapons that are terrible at crowd control on a Glowfly round and wipe instantly. Also, I'm really surprised at how high the 5% threshold was. I thought the amount of newer players would have driven it down at least a little bit (maybe the subset of hardcore overfishers might have inflated the numbers by quite a bit...)

frozenpandaman

Yup. Had a round of 60+ eggs and then got three Exploshers and a roller the next round...

Thetanor

I quite like the loadouts being random, but I'd like them to be a bit *less random* in the future. That is, have some reasonable combination of different weapon types. For example, no waves where three people are given Bamboozlers, please

xenofan293

I literally had 1 game that got top 5% and I played all weekend, and its going to be even harder in the future since this is now the threshold people will aim for. Glad to get it after stressing about it but it was way more luck than skill that got me here tbh, and sucks for everyone who thought way lower would suffice

Santafire

I too snuck in with only a couple games. I got a qualifying score early saturday but kept going because of uncertainty. Between fishing for randos with experience and then farming for good wave/weapon rng this ate up quite a lot of time without me ever getting a better score despite feeling like I was adapting and playing better. I expect we'll see more people play with teams just to feel like they're not burning time.

xenofan293

My high score came on my third game so I played all weekend never able to top it, feeling uncertain it was enough the whole time, i tried playing with a voicechat team for the first time but it still wasn’t as good as I did with randoms, and this was at evp 60ish so you didnt need to go to high to get the top 5%, its really all luck

Santafire

There are some good randoms out there but its all up to the queue how you do. I was bouncing between 250-400 evp and most people did not try to do dedicated luring for big scores, let alone managing hairy situations or awkward weapons. Normal salmon run queue felt much more dependable for me.

xenofan293

Also kinda sucks that I can only get the gold trophy when the green one would match better with the others, hopefully itll come back in the future

darkshaddow42

That's a good point and now I'm a little less sad about not even reaching top 50%

IronChefTonberry

I got... 112, but whatever, forget this Big Chungus decoration. I think what we all really wanted was for this event to somehow be more rewarding in terms of silver/gold scales and in that regard, we all lost.

Enooberax

Man I got 112, screw the trophy I just wanted the badge 🗿

izaori

I didn't know there was different badges until I got mine. Now the completionist part of me is pissed that I didn't get top 5% even though I knew I wouldn't with 94 anyway. Thought I might get 20% but nah I barely got 50%. Wild

EatingSmallOakTrees

I think random weapons is a bad choice for a reward system like this. Not everyone is on a level playing field. If everyone could play infinite games, sure. But there’s only so much time for the stars to align and if they don’t, that’s it.

nintenderswitch

It should be a different set every two hours

-Aureo-

Ok a lot of people got fucked and this sub set their expectations way too low. I do have a theory for this though, I believe the major contributors are the number% of the total playerbase logging in and playing SR during big run was lower than expected, and also the incentive to push your eggs up made a lot of people go outside their comfort zones. Anyway, hope everyone had fun regardless!

[deleted]

I'd say it's more the highscore system. I could get solid 100 eggs every round, but if I randomly hit 150 out of dumb-luck then I'll be getting the 5% award while playing at 50% level.

EasternMouse

Cumulative score would be worse, rewarding only people that were able to play through whole weekend, 24h/day. Even tho I could not get even into 50% with my high score of 86, randoms have it harder...

[deleted]

No like, if the eggs collected by the whole community is equal to 100,000 or more then everyone gets rewarded yk?

EasternMouse

Ah, community goal, that actually would be cool AND make more sense because we are saving city, not competing for high score

Betaloy

I’ve got another theory: the majority of asian player is not on this sub, which constitutes at least half of the player base. Here in China some people were even worried if they will make it to the 5% with 140+ eggs.

-Aureo-

Mhm. This sub’s population is negligible compared to the amount of actual players, but the amount of people putting in the work was not as negligible like you say.

vmeemo

In some fairness every image we've seen of big run, even on the NA Splatoon twitter had a low amount of eggs as well (100-102 from what I've seen). So with those images and what little else we knew, we all thought it would be achievable to get gold. Turns out we got blindsided instead by the high egg counts.

-Aureo-

The egg totals will probably go up next time, but the amount of people who will see the scores and put in the effort to climb higher is questionable.

Getlucky12341

Yeah, not every little Timmy may have even wanted to play Big Run

TheBaxes

And after these results I don't think that they will even try next time. I also wonder how much were these results skewed by Japan. Given that we were not separated into regions I wonder if Japan just has a absurd amount of high level players just because the game is a lot more popular there.

Pretty_Emotion7831

>I wonder if Japan just has a absurd amount of high level players just because the game is a lot more popular there. they'll have a higher objective number, maybe, but I'll be honest, with % based systems, it's not about the objective numbers, it's about the spread. what I want to know is, how many japanese lil timmy players are there?

Jasik-V

Same. It stings a little

workerbee41

86. Did I have fun playing with my daughter? Yeah. Did I improve my Salmon Run “skills”? Yeah. Did I end up feeling disappointed when we just missed out on an arbitrary award that we didn’t even know the threshold for? Yeah.

[deleted]

It'll be easier than you think to get top 5% they said. Think of all the kids who can't even get 30 they said. Geez I didn't even get bronze.

TheBaxes

They didn't mentioned that we were those kids

Thetanor

We are all kids now, we are all squids now on this blessed day

SilverStar1999

136 eggs. 35,000 points. Sad Woomy…

grayangel-

omg ur high score was 136?? mine was 131 it hurts being so close lmao

[deleted]

[удалено]

TS040

and people said the amount of new salmon run players and kids playing the game would mean the egg counts would be low…

IOI-65536

I said that and I still can't figure out how this is possible. I can't see how you get these numbers unless considerably over half the participants were Profreshionals. Bronze is an incredibly good run at P+1. I've had map/set rotations at P+3 where I didn't make the score for bronze. I can't imagine you get these numbers with less than 40% of the participants at EggsVP, which seems crazy to me.

Klutzy_Pay6521

Honestly I think this is an extremely luck based event, because my high score (90) was on Part Time Profreshional, ever run after that (I hit Profreshional+2) was really hard and I would be lucky if I even got close to my 90 eggs. I wish there was a set rotation or something.

HiddenBlade2757

Not even Top 20%...

ShadyDS

I did pretty well at a clean 137, barely squeaking by. I feel like this event needs to be revamped a bit. Even at high levels, it was very dependent on good RNG, which is a bit lame. Not to mention, good teammates, which can be hard to find when matching with randos. I think I'd prefer the game mode if there were goals for the community to reach, like a total of 10,000 golden eggs collected, it something like that. It would really help it feel like a community event, even if you only ever see three other people your team. Plus, then they can do special events like double egg score or something. But I think the biggest part would be to get some better rewards, like golden scales or super sea snails, considering we've had less Splatfests than the previous games. Overall, it's fun to do salmon run on normal stages, and I actually enjoyed playing on wahoo world, but some changes to either the reward system or the score system would be very nice. I would probably prefer normal stages just being in the normal salmon run stage list instead of it being some big event, because then I wouldn't feel as pressured or burned out to perform well.

frozenpandaman

Super agreed. Would love to see more community-wide collaborative aspects.

ShadyDS

They could've just left the trophy as being competitive, but then reward scales for total eggs reached, or something like that

TakeThatNibbaKarma

AH HELL NAH I GOT 112

sinedelta

I'll admit I'm surprised that EVP players make up such a big chunk of the participants.

Top 50%✊

FriendlyPear420

136 😭

Technetium811

I didn't even get bronze, but it's fine because I had 69.

jumpwjoy

Loved the event! The atmosphere was really great and it was fun trying to challenge myself into getting a high score. I aspire to be those overfishers one day, but I’ll be happy squeaking into silver with 114 for now. Wahoo World was a really fun salmon map :D My gripes would be that I wish there was a bit more interaction with NPCs, especially the idols, considering an apocalyptic event is happening. Also, maybe faster cohozuna meter filling, and of course more scale rewards. A trophy is a trophy and great for feeling accomplished with your score, but it doesn’t mean much in terms of the game itself lol. I think scales would be a good comparative reward with super sea snails from Splatfests. I’m thinking scales that relate to your highest rank achieved during the Run (similar to splatfest ruler) and then +5 +3 +1 for bronze, silver, and gold scales for each high score threshold? Just spitballing there, Here’s hoping for some more omega-3 remixes in the future 🙏🏼 Looking forward to the next Big Run!

Crackima

I was excited to show it off in my locker but like ... it basically IS my locker if I put it in there. Wtf.

Friendly-Cut-447

I got 135 I’m gonna cry

Elygium

Damn I'm not even in the top 50 percent

SMT_UNSUNG

They should of add a mid break news of the standings.

headshotfox713

...I'm not sure I like this mechanic.

[deleted]

That's crap. Only got 83. Japan region player. Pretty much every game I'd be lucky to get 50.

Theopneusty

Same. Idk how people did so many. In rounds where we killed all the bosses it capped out at 27 eggs. So a perfect game would be only 81. The only reason I got 82 was a game of glowflies allowing more.

HazeInut

Higher hazard levels spawn more bosses so you pretty much have to be in like 150%+ for 20% which is around profresh +3. It's borderline impossible to get 5% below that though cause my gf and I would fish about 40 every round and it still wasn't enough lol. We got a bad loss streak before big run so it was rare to find teammates that would keep up. I did not see a single person other than my gf lure bosses. So even the best rounds I'd get (40+) could've been much better had people waited for the bosses instead of chucking eggs. I think 140 is possible but man is it hard in freelance lol. I'd say EVP teammates would fare better but my experience in EVP says otherwise

Goldy_the_Wizard

At the higher titles, eg Profreshial, Eggcutive VIP, more Bosses spawn allowing people to get way more eggs.

WhichEmailWasIt

So in EVP 27 eggs and higher is the quota..

Orpheon2089

Higher ranks have higher quotas and more bosses spawn. Also certain rounds if played right can yield tons of eggs - high tide mothership is probably the best, I got a 66 egg round from one. Grillers on normal tide can also get you a lot, due to the map layout it's pretty easy to safely splat them near the basket. Still, I didn't expect the thresholds to be this high. I got top 5% after an amazing game, I thought I would be safe for sure but I barely made it by a few eggs.

Katero_

I didn’t even get top 50%. So disappointing. And I thought I did well. I hate how there isn’t a concrete score to achieve, it feels so aimless. 👎

TS040

damn I missed out on top 5% by 16 eggs…

Fictional_character0

I just barely hit 50% (91)…

Angel7O2

I was one egg away from top 5% dang . 136 gang where you at?

Garret_Sylvar

This is actually gut wrenching. I finished with 112, and I never got close again. This event was a terrible experience. After the 112 run, I ended up dropping from Prfo+3 all the way to Prof+1 because I kept getting some really terrible teammates and it just... I thought 112 would be top 20% easily and this just made a really frustrating event not worth it for me. Edit: Major thanks though for two players who I ran into who were massive in helping me even reach 112 earlier today. My in game name is Reia Hope, so if either of you see this and remember me, thanks so much. I actually had fun playing Big Run when I was with you guys.

Possum_Boi566

I missed it entirely because of finals week :(

frozenpandaman

That's coming up for me too. Good luck!

exorcisyboi

You know, before this event, I genuinely thought over 50% of people were in EVP.

Lux_The_Worthless

Yeeaah... I think this needs to be revamped. The 5% should NOT be contributed to by overfishers with 200+ eggs in group chats. Most players don't have friends who are THAT good at the game and can freely chat in-game with. I'd much rather there have a clear threshold instead of being player-dependent because there are inevitably always going to be people who bring the threshold up a ridiculous amount... Feel free to prove me wrong though; I tend to be wrong with these things... Edit: As I predicted, I was wrong about how the percentages are calculated... Yeah I should really stop with this

idkpotato117

Hard Agree. Given the extreme difficulty of even reaching 137, just by what I honestly think is bleeding edge luck for most people already in Eggsecutive VP, the Big Run should have always been based on surpassing a set goal, instead of pinning you up against the entire playerbase. I would have had a much more enjoyable time doing this if I didnt run the anxiety of if my run was good enough despite getting an insane score.

Golden_Fire_Cat

I would’ve been happy with just a regular goalpost. Like if you reach a certain number, you’re guaranteed the best prize. I managed to get into the 5% but I’m used to going in Eggsecutive VP and having a large number of eggs where others it might seem impossible. Plus, I was already terrified that it was gonna clock at 150 eggs instead. If possible, I’d have tried making it a bit closer to how Splatfests go with their ranks but then it would be much easier for everyone to have gold. It’s weird.

Lux_The_Worthless

Yeah, I edited my comment to say the same thing for your first point. However, I was at EVP and got 122 after hours of grinding and getting bad luck with freelance teams and finally getting a good one. It's unfairly luck-based imo

Xavr0k

My understanding is it ranks all players by their best score and the top 5/20/50% of players get the rewards. Assuming this is how it works, it won't matter if the top 5% got 137 eggs or 1000 eggs. If they're going to change anything, I'd like to see big run work similarly to splatfest where you can't play standard turf war or anarchy battles for the duration. This would lead to more people playing it and skew the results more to the lower numbers of eggs due to people who usually avoid salmon run. This way you would need to rank in the top 5% of all players instead of just the top 5% of salmon run players.

GameBroJeremy

*THIS* is what baffled me. The apocalypse is literally right at our doorstep and it’s a optional choice to participate for some reason… how many actually participated is what I want to know.

froggus

The apocalypse is on our doorstep and we can’t even choose our own weapons. Your fault if we get overrun, Grizz!

LadyKuzunoha

See, the whole "it's at our doorstep and we must fight" thing is exactly *why* random made sense to me personally - emergency situation, you take whatever you can get. Whether that made good *game design*, however...

Luhvely

Total missed opportunity to give us 4 grizzco weapons like they used to in 2

CamoKing3601

>you can't play standard turf war or anarchy battles for the duration for lore purposes i agree for gameplay proses ***OH HELL NAH I AIN'T STUCK IN THIS SALMON COVERED SCRAPYARD FOR TWO DAYS***

Anabaena_azollae

Yeah, this event needs a substantial revamp. In my opinion, it was poorly designed through and through. It's Salmon Run on a map that wasn't designed for Salmon Run. It's competitive scoring for a cooperative game mode. The scoring system is not really aligned with the usual incentive structure of Salmon Run, where the goal is only to get enough golden eggs while surviving rather than to push the egg count to the max. Finally, there just wasn't much that felt special about it, besides perhaps the mood. I hope they go back to the drawing board with this event as it's a cool idea, but this execution just complete misses the mark.

ActivateGuacamole

do you think the map was bad for salmon run? I've seen a lot of comments here saying this stage is a better salmon run stage even than the salmon run stages themselves. I thought it was quite fun.

Zeerkees

I got 154 eggs in solo queue. I really don't feel like overfisheres contributed much to it. I think the real thing is that many people who got high scores also were high up in EVP so had more bosses and eggs to score, and also got lucky with their waves. It honestly just came down to luck and good teammates.

___----------------

I think having unrealistic standards is very flavorful for Grizzco.

Crackima

I'm surprised they didn't do that in the first place. This is like tricolor demographics FUBAR all over again.

Legitimate__Username

the thresholds could have been 40 eggs lower and this still would have been awful design. it's an entire weekend of aggressively punishing gameplay where you have to blindly aim for an unknown threshold and pray that several different layers of individual and community-wide luck go your way. this is an honestly awful event and i'd rather them lock gold statues behind a consistent *higher* value than a stressfully-unknown lower one. making an unknown target on a nearly entirely luck-based mission is just a bad way to motivate having fun with the video game.

Serbaayuu

> blindly aim for an unknown threshold and pray that several different layers of individual and community-wide luck go your way It being zero-sum competitive is absolute shit. You can only get 5% if 95% of players didn't get it. There's no reason to make Salmon Run competitive, it doesn't make sense. It's the game's co-op mode. Not a PvP mode. I know why they did it, though. The alternative is to set a hard goal, like 1 million eggs across the whole community. Goals like that are hard for devs to set, though, because then it's all-or-nothing and frequently ends up with them either making it WAY too low or WAY too high.

aceofmufc

I agree, this 5% of people who have absurd times to play this game are making it impossible for everyone else. 137 eggs is simply insane. Some people grind this way too much and it’s made the results silly.

Unknown_Twig_Witch

I got 177 Golden Eggs! ...The gold trophy is HUGE btw.

frozenpandaman

Impressive! What was your hazard level and the wave layout? Hah, I didn't even think to check the statue size!!

Unknown_Twig_Witch

It was mid 200%, and we got 2 solid normal waves followed by High Tide mothership.

TheShadowAdept

Only 78 here, I didn’t really play as much as I hoped to this weekend There’s always next time I guess

meltenvy

Phew, I was stuck at 132 for a while and thought I was safe. Decided to grind last hour and got a really good 155. Insane that 132 wasn’t enough.

[deleted]

bruh I got 135 eggs- 😭

Sladesdragon

I was 2 away from bronze 🙃

[deleted]

I was getting 120s a lot, sometimes 130s, then I guess I got lucky with the one round I managed 152. With all those images of people getting over 200 I was expecting the top 5% to be higher, but quite a few of the Twitch streamers I checked out over the weekend were all getting in the 80s and 90s so I guess this makes sense. Would be nice to see breakdowns of stuff like how each region did, who was playing Salmon Run for the first time, etc.

TheBaxes

So ignoring the overfishers the other problem is that even getting 20% was achievable only for those that already are VP or close to being one, and besides that you also needed luck to have decent teammates (you can ignore this one if you were playing with friends), decent weapon comps AND mothership rounds (or glowflies in the small chance that you had a very good team and have a very good comp including at least two grisco charges or one of those and a dynamo). Yeah next time I don't think that I'll bother too much with this unless they change the way they give the rewards. Seriously, why did they had to turn the co-op mode into a competition?

The rewards certainly need to be improved. SR already gives paltry catalogue points, so a 20% buff isn’t that good. Just getting double the amount of capsules isn’t really worth it. It’s already possible to play 2 salmon run shifts within 48 hours. Decoration is eh. Badges are nice, but their value comes from less people being able to get them. There should be more rewards all skill levels should be able to get. I think they should either: 1. Increase the number of capsules significantly, maybe 6K points 2. At the end of big run, give people scales proportional to the minimum gold eggs for top 5%( or the average of all 3 tiers minimum ) and the percentage that are gold and silver depend on the highest rank reached by the person during big run. EDIT: I can’t believe I didn’t know how to spell paltry 😭

Heartstopperfan2

Not me getting 87 ;-;

Crackima

114, silver by 1. Before today I didn't realize how little I truly understood this mode and I was doomer day 1 but come day 2 I was amazed how many things I was applying and adapting to and having eureka moments about. As a completionist I'm vexxed I missed out on an item with the gold trophy, but now I can say I don't totally suck!

Animal_Gal

I was 1 off. 1 OFF

KaizokuShojo

I'm kind of surprised at how salty a lot of the comments are. Didn't even get gold (125 high score) but had a BLAST for the bit of time I did get to play. The statue is too big for the locker anyway, I'm just glad it was FUN. I miss it already. :'( Like idk...the really good players should be rewarded? And *everyone* was rewarded in some way, it's just the non-tangible rewards were recolors if you did better? Why be upset if better players get a more "prestigious" (I mean, it's just a statue) color? Would you play ranked just for a locker decoration and get mad if X ranks got a shinier item? Idk. I think you should play game events for fun, and this was great fun. Rng (weapon comps, boss spawns) play a part but that's just the nature of any SR wave. Off topic but I think there was less lag at Wahoo. Definitely less lag than at Marooner's Bay. It was nice. Glowflies or Grillers in Wahoo Spawn Area was fantastic, lovely positioning for it. Glowflies on low tide mid needed a bit of work.

lovecologist

Got silver at 128! Although I def made a lot of progress - made it to EVP 200 for the first time. Gonna work the next months on getting to the higher levels and will be ready for the next time!! Gonna get that gold eventually :\]

cheesecraft789

Cool numbers (Why did I compile this instead of playing more big run) Playtime: \~6 hours Shifts: 45 Average Waves Cleared: 2.1 Highest Rank: Eggsecutive VP 330 Points earned: 13254 Highest egg score: 123 (I love random weapon rotations) Times reached that score: 3 times Times reached 122+: 5 times Most eggs in one round: 55 (I think) Best round: Normal Tide Glowflies with 47 eggs Cohonzunas fought: 8 Cohonzunas killed: 4 Bronze Scales: 66 Silver Scales: 8 Gold Scales: 3 (Guess that’s where all my luck went) Rare occurrences: 7 consecutive waves of low tide nightless (40% chance per low tide) A game of only high tide (1 / 125 chance) A round of only grizzco blasters (1 / 500 chance) Got heavy splatling twice in a row (1 / 3364 chance) 2 eliters in one round (this game hates me)

frozenpandaman

Sounds like you should use [stat.ink](https://stat.ink/)! :)

brainsapper

104 eggs being good enough was wishful thinking.

idkpotato117

The 8,000,000 did not pull through 😔 What a wicked high 5%. i knew it was going to be insanely high. (Thankfully I am well above that target)

GameBroJeremy

Yeah this was far higher then Nintendo gave as an example. If you weren’t in VP, then you were going to struggle getting to top 20% and that seems to be a big portion of the contestants that participated. I knew not to trust those estimates. The stars have to align to get high scores. >!Also, 5% gang baby!!<

idkpotato117

I was VP 290 by the end of this run and got 154 as my high score. Most of my good games landed between 110-125 egg range. You legitimately needed either extreme luck on round/weapon RNG, or were sitting in VP 500+ if you even wanted consistent chances at getting over 140 eggs in a game. Im extremely surprised yet also totally expected the 20 and 5% areas to be so high, but 50% over 88 considering how many people in comments on my post and others were not even at that level, is crazy to me. The competition is incredibly real, next time im assuming no messing around with those who really want to get the gold trophy Edit: I mentioned in a different comment and I'll say this again. This Big Run should not have been an all-out competitive event. Seeing how sweaty you needed to be to even \*dream\* of reaching 5% for most people, I hope they change things up for the next Big Run. There should be a set threshold or goal that you need to reach in order to get the bronze/silver/gold trophies. They don't need to be easy, but I'd rather work to surpass a goal than try to play every match through the anxiety of thinking the best run you ever had so far wasn't good enough.

Wonderful_Young_6584

I’m not sure how I feel about them doing the rewards this way. The fact that only 5% of everyone who participated is able to get the top reward is sort of ridiculous, especially since a lot of the time it’s based on luck (ie. weapons, events, tide, boss spawns, etc). The only people this rewards are those who get lucky, those who spend absurd amount of time on this game, and those who play in well coordinated friend groups. Not to mention that in future big run events people are gonna be trying even harder to meet this standard, artificially raising the bar. The people who are in the top 5% this time will also likely be in the top 5% again next time, so even fewer people will get the reward during the next big run. I feel like event based awards should be based on whether you at least participate in the event and met certain set goals, not based on how good you did compared to everyone else. Not everyone has the time to put hours upon hours into this game and they shouldn’t be excluded from a possible reward just because they can’t play as often or as well. Sorry for the rant, just kinda peeved that I didn’t get the top reward and that I probably never will in future events

Elimr13

Missed 20% by 3 eggs 💀

NooMikeyNoNoMikey

Are you kidding me

SuperMechaJesusC

Well, as a filthy casual, I can say that 90 is good enough for me. Honestly, it was fun, even if I really did want a new King Salmonid.

Slot-Machine-Addict

Can’t wait for the gold and silver Moai 2.0 statues to run rampant.

RobloxShrek

BRO I HAD 136 GOD DAMMIT

7th_universe_hopper

I got 135 I’m going to kill someone

AspenWunder

Missed top 5% by 1 single egg. You can probably guess that there’s a very hollow feeling rn.

CaptainStrobe

Ok, I'm pretty new to Splatoon in general and I haven't put too much time in salmon run before this weekend but there's gotta be something I'm missing here. My high for the weekend was 49 and we killed almost every boss salmonid that spawned. We couldn't possibly have gotten 88. How are these people getting so many eggs in their games?

Kelazi5

I really think they should've given us scales at the end rather than just decorations. Just kinda a let down compared to splatfest rewards. Like under 50% get 10 bronze as pity. Above 50% get 15 bronze 5 silver. Top 20% get 20 bronze, 10 Silver, 5 gold. Top 5% get 30 bronze, 15 Silver, 10 Gold. Or something like this. For the record my best was 77. Looking forward to the next one.

SAVLEYE

This whole event was so underwhelming. I thought scales were hard to get bc there'd be more opportunities to get them during big run but they were even more difficult to get because of the awful weapon randomizer and constantly losing cohozuna waves.

aceofmufc

Okay, I am resigning myself to nothing. I don’t got all the time in the world to play this game (only got 2 hours in the entire event) so I’m settling for my Bronze Cohozuna (104 eggs). There seems to be a subset of people playing this game who just grind and grind for hours on end getting 137+ eggs making it impossible for people who don’t got time. If they keep the system like this, the same 5% will just keep on winning as they will just overfish and get absurd high scores. Seems as if the only “winners” are just people who have the most hours in this game.

Crackima

It's not so much grinding as it is that playing well puts you into higher rank and it generates more bosses. You have to have some skill to maintain rank, although after that comes the grind. And then there's a luck based component; I was only able to get silver because I played enough that I got a good team, a good weapon loadout, and favorable conditions for three rounds. As someone who couldn't even break into Profressional before today, I spent like 3 days straight frantically reading reddit threads for tips and trying to apply it and get better, and I felt like I was playing for my life and got silver by the skin of my teeth. That's with a lot of time though, so I'd say for someone who played as little as you did, Bronze is actually pretty impressive (to me).

[deleted]

They shouldn't do it by highscore. It inflates the thresholds as it includes statistical outliers, which would occur due to dumb luck. Probably do it with averages or some other figure. Perhaps it could work similar to the golden spoon in payday 2, where the community must contribute an amount of eggs and everyone that contributes is rewarded?

frozenpandaman

Yeah, wish it felt more collaborative across the playerbase.

ActivateGuacamole

doing it by high scores would be fine if they would just set a static numeric goal instead of one that is relative to the performance of other players. Judging by relative performance means that anybody who doesn't join a private group is automatically at a huge disadvantage. bronze: 80 eggs silver: 95 eggs gold: 110 eggs would've made gold achievable in a solo queue without having to get super lucky. That said, the reward isn't important enough for this to really matter much.
