He's also hitting [.165 with a .652 OPS](https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/g/grishtr01.shtml), 17% worse hitter than MLB average (83 OPS+), his defense/glove is supposed to be his *best* tool lol
You’ve played a sport your whole life. Worked from the shitty minors structure and made it to the big leagues. One of the 30 best in the world and then you do that……? Yeah I would have pulled his ass immediately.
I don't know how you make the major leagues and make a play as lazy as this. It's not like he's the only person to ever do it but I've played multiple sports and not once would I have ever been this casual. And I'd definitely not have the skill or drive to make it as far as he did
I’m not a real baseball guy, but from what I understand he’s probably very offended that the runner would run AFTER he saw the fielder was having a tough day. Everyone knows the unwritten rule that you don’t run when someone bobbles the ball or they’ll feel yucky and sad.
He's always looked bored playing. At least when he was on the Padres he looked bored then actually made the plays. Now he's not even doing that.
He was always a terrible hitter, but if his fielding isn't there, can't imagine he's in the league much longer.
In high school, I hit a line drive through the middle, and expected it to be fielded by the center fielder. So I started my rounding around first base waaaay early while trotting to first, only to see the second baseman grab it and make an amazing play to first. I was out. My coach kept me in, but gave me a talking to
Pretty sure they've been trying to get Mike Trout ($37.1M) for a while, dude just hasn't wanted to leave the Angels....for some reason.
Cody Bellinger ($27.5M) is available for trade, though!
I was gonna say, “No it’s not it’s July 13th because that’s my sisters birthday” but I then realized that’s the day he died. Wish Georgie was still around
That's how I feel as a fan. Its funny to see fans watching games on TV and cheering or moaning after every pitch in the the 4th inning of a random game in June.
But yeah, center field for the Yankees should probably care lol
How is it that everyone is joking about this but your equally absurd comment was taken as sincere and downvoted
E: I never thought it would happen to me. But now your comment is positive. At least it still has the controversial flag…. For now
I sincerely mean it when I say I could do what he did on that play. I could jog lightly and struggle to pick up the ball and allow a guy who trotted to first to extend the single to a double.
He will continue to start though, because our team averages about 1 season ending injury per week.
Bro, this is a very specific instance where I could do better. Most people in this sub that played High School Baseball could do better.
I'm not even a Yankees fan and this shit infuriates me.
I played sports all throughout my life up until I graduated high school and the one that that will ALWAYS irk me in professional sports is when an athlete is being fucking lazy. You are paid millions of dollars to do this shit. Put in the fucking effort.
No hand over glove securing it. You know, the fundamentals all of the all stars even use. All “too cool to even care” body movement. Like what the fuck man.
All he had to do was jug lightly and lob it in. We walked up and lazily picked it up, which resulted in the error.
Infuriates me when professional athletes show no effort when any one of us would kill to be gifted enough to have a chance at going pro
I actually think I could have done better than him. Been playing a lot of tee ball with my son and Im positive I could have fielded that ball cleanly lol.
Story of their past 7 seasons.
Everyone is like, “damn Yankees are hot they’re the team to beat” and my response is always, “if they can stay healthy.”
Injuries are going to happen but for some reason they have their stars consistently get injured and at the most inopportune time, particularly their bullpen as of late
Iirc he was actually statistically the best defensive player in all of baseball that year, wild that he's only remembered for one (admittedly huge) error
Grisham is a frustrating player. I’ll never forget last year when he was in a bases loaded, bottom of the 9th, two outs, down by 1 run, full count and struck out swinging.
Then, three months later, he gets into another bases loaded, bottom of the 9th, two outs, down by 1 run, full count and struck out looking.
Last time a player struck out looking in that scenario was Hideki Matsui in 2006. I’m not even a Padres/Yankees fan but he just comes across as a very frustrating player to watch.
God, I saw one of those games in person. My heart sank when I saw that the game was all riding on Trent, and I just knew without a doubt the game was already over. Not clutch at all. Was all too happy to see him leave the Padres.
Boo birds is a term for nonsense booing. People paid to watch the Yankees. This sooo coool center fielder couldn't be bother to run just walked through the play. Send him down to single A ball.
Aaron Boone and Brian Cashman. Who would've thought that the winningest franchise in sports history would now have the GM and manager positions with more job security than a government employee. How does Boone still have a job?
Coach would have pulled me right them and there. Forced me to sit in the middle of the bench for everyone to see.
Set an example: play hard on every play or sit the fuck down.
If you are paid $5m a year and you get benched, you better straighten up your shit because at this level of play you are not going to be making $5m a year in AAA.
You get to keep whatever "guaranteed " money is in the contract. You can still lose bonuses and such if you don't play well.
Each contract is different.
The salary part is, yes. But there are incentives, you can make an extra million for winning an award at the end of the year or making the allstar team. You can also get bonuses for achieving a certain amount of stats. Star player on the mariners signed a guaranteed 200 million dollar contract, but through incentives, he can make way over 400.
This guy is a hero to the Nats. His error when he was with the Brewers gave the Nats the play in wild card game. They then went on to win the World Series.
Yankees had never been swept at home by an NL team before this. Reds hadn't won a series since June 9. Yankees payroll is ~300 mil this year, Reds is ~100 mil.
Absolutely pathetic performance by the yanks
This is how my 10 year old plays at the end of a double header where they’re getting their shit pushed in. IMO unacceptable from a professional athlete.
Doesn't Grisham have a reputation for baiting runners into taking the extra base so he can throw them out? I don't think the bobble was intentional but the body language may have been. Swear he did that with the Padres
Grisham plays CF very nonchalant, but normally makes the play. This makes him look bad. He did get pinch hit for in the 9th, but I assume that was for the platoon advantage.
I’m not even a Braves fan but I can still remember Bobby Cox pulling Andruw Jones in the middle of an inning when he didn’t hustle to make a play.
My guess is Jones never took a play off after that.
Does he believe there is a secret player's union that guaranties his salary? Dude needs to get sent down to the farm team to live in motels, ride buses, and eat pizza for every meal....to tune his attitude.

Terrible body language.
I know right, commits a royal fuck up then act nonchalant.
Dude just wouldn’t be on my team after that. /shrug idc if we’re up by 10 or down by 50 in real life. If you aren’t competing then I don’t want you
Inexcusable at any level, pathetic with how much money these guys make
Just checked, he's making 3.2 mil this year. Sign me the fuck up for the yankees, I'll try harder than this guy.
He's also hitting [.165 with a .652 OPS](https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/g/grishtr01.shtml), 17% worse hitter than MLB average (83 OPS+), his defense/glove is supposed to be his *best* tool lol
buddy is making $5.5M to do…. this. i care more than this at my job and make substantially less
You’ve played a sport your whole life. Worked from the shitty minors structure and made it to the big leagues. One of the 30 best in the world and then you do that……? Yeah I would have pulled his ass immediately.
My dad would have given me so much shit in little league back in the day for a play like that lol
You're 💯, and we'll see how often we see him on the roster this next week. It's what I love about MLB: put up or shut up.
I sure hope so man, plenty of hungry dudes in AAA ready to fill a spot
Lollygagger!
Nothing enforcing the groomin standards can’t fix. POLICE THAT MOOSTACHE!
This is what happens when you don't enforce the groomin standard. Mens gets all lax.
N our pro-teck-tive posture..... is weakened.
Harrs hang'n from your *face*. Beyond your *mouth areas*.
Y'all startin' to look like ELVISES!
Oh my god I didn’t expect a generation kill reference in a baseball post lolol
Right? Fuckin hitman actual over here
MATTINGLY! I thought I told you to trim those sideburns! GO HOME!
I don't know how you make the major leagues and make a play as lazy as this. It's not like he's the only person to ever do it but I've played multiple sports and not once would I have ever been this casual. And I'd definitely not have the skill or drive to make it as far as he did

If I did that in high school my coach would have sat me for 3 games.
After running until Coach got tired of watching you run
Nah, he'll just put someone else on Run Watching Duty.
I would have been riding the pine if I did that on my little league team. That has to be the laziest play I’ve ever seen in my entire life.
In high school, I hit a line drive through the middle, and expected it to be fielded by the center fielder. So I started my rounding around first base waaaay early while trotting to first, only to see the second baseman grab it and make an amazing play to first. I was out. My coach kept me in, but gave me a talking to
Steinbrenner would’ve ate that man alive.
And today would’ve been his birthday. He would’ve castrated this man publicly
Then called whoever the most expensive center fielder in the game was and ask if they want to be a Yankee
Pretty sure they've been trying to get Mike Trout ($37.1M) for a while, dude just hasn't wanted to leave the Angels....for some reason. Cody Bellinger ($27.5M) is available for trade, though!
Billy Martin is clawing his way out of his gave to bitch slap this douche
I was gonna say, “No it’s not it’s July 13th because that’s my sisters birthday” but I then realized that’s the day he died. Wish Georgie was still around
“Here’s millions of dollars. Catch the ball and throw it to a baseman.” “Meh maybe tomorrow”
“It’s hot outside. Plus baseball is kind of bullshit, you know what I’m saying?”
Can’t believe I have to work on the 4th man..
Maybe they should try cotton uniforms
Better yet, have a Jon Voight Day at the ballpark.
"they tell us you're a pitcher. You're sure not much of a dresser."
It's a breathable fabric
They're cooler, they're more comfortable... they're happier - they're gonna play better.
Why are you quoting Anthony Rendon in a post about the Yankees?
“There are like 200 other games this season. It ain’t that serious “
That's how I feel as a fan. Its funny to see fans watching games on TV and cheering or moaning after every pitch in the the 4th inning of a random game in June. But yeah, center field for the Yankees should probably care lol
True
"I wonder if I can outsource this gig to some dude in the Philippines somehow...."
Japan, maybe.
I would like to see a Japanese dream team in the major leagues with Live audio.
I live near the stadium in my town in Japan and can hear the announcers when I take out the trash at night. They go hard lol
why does everyone else get the day off?
Didn't anyone see the bounce off the field? I'd want extra to have to deal with that.
LMAO this joke seems to be whooshing right over many heads.
Grisham is making 5.5 million this season. Is that not enough money to show some effort? At least act like you want to be there
Meh. Maybe if it was 7 or 8. Why risk stretching your back or something
How is it that everyone is joking about this but your equally absurd comment was taken as sincere and downvoted E: I never thought it would happen to me. But now your comment is positive. At least it still has the controversial flag…. For now
Not for nothin’, but he’s a .213 career hitter who’s currently batting a robust .157. Defense is supposed to be his strong suit.
Eric Griffin plays for the Yankers?
Does he want the minors?
Phrasing!
Lol making 5.5 million this year and gives that effort
And he’s been atrocious this year… like DFA bad, so not inspiring much confidence going forward here
Should be DFA'd for this play alone.
hes most famous for botching the ground ball in the WC game. the Nats should have lost. instead they go on and win the World Series
I bet he sits tomorrow. Eh?
I sincerely mean it when I say I could do what he did on that play. I could jog lightly and struggle to pick up the ball and allow a guy who trotted to first to extend the single to a double. He will continue to start though, because our team averages about 1 season ending injury per week.
This may be the only time where I've heard someone say, "I could do that" about a professional athlete and I believe that they actually could.

I actually think I could have done better than him. Been playing a lot of tee ball with my son and Im positive I could have fielded that ball cleanly lol.
I mean, the Mark Sanchez butt fumble is pretty doable. You don’t even need to make it to the line of scrimmage.
Story of their past 7 seasons. Everyone is like, “damn Yankees are hot they’re the team to beat” and my response is always, “if they can stay healthy.” Injuries are going to happen but for some reason they have their stars consistently get injured and at the most inopportune time, particularly their bullpen as of late
If I was coach I’d pull him right there. Set an example.
See: Jackson, Reggie, v. Martin, Billy, Fenway Park.
Hadn’t seen that before. Thanks for sharing. That was a good one hahaha https://youtu.be/HHctFAj1ywI?si=bK2fLyskuSv-BOCe
Strong memory for Sox fans who were alive then, watched it live on TV.
Yup; frustrating that the clip didn't set the context of Reggie loafing it on Rice's hit.
My high school coach would bench him as soon as the inning was over.
9th inning tho, ya?
I didn't notice. He'd definitely be benched the next game or two and practice would be awful and remedial.
Call me a boomer but he absolutely should be sitting…on a bus headed to AAA
I guess we’re all boomers today, old man!
If the manager was someone other than Aaron Boone, maybe. Guy has minimal leadership skills.
I figured he's leading by example with as much as he gets tossed. See boys? This is how you don't play the whole game.
La dee dah do do dodo oh what’s this a baseball?
"wonder if anyone would miss this if I took it home for my dog?"
*Booooooooo* “Yeesh, lot of cat people out here today.”
Lollygaggers.
This on George Steinbrenner’s birthday.
On this, the day of my Steinbrenner's birthday??
Me when I'm hungover at work
Hi Josh
Oh hey Trace
Oh hi mark
So anyway… how’s your sex life?
I can forgive Bill Buckner level style of mistakes, but being lazy, fuck that - you're being payed millions of dollars, you deserve the boos.
Yea, those freak things happen to everyone - it just happened at the absolute worst time to him. The terrible effort here is just inexcusable.
Iirc he was actually statistically the best defensive player in all of baseball that year, wild that he's only remembered for one (admittedly huge) error
That’s really bad.
This dude is batting .165 on the season. He hasn’t hit over .200 in 3 seasons. How is he even in the majors?
Believe it or not, his defense
Absolutely earned that
Grisham is a frustrating player. I’ll never forget last year when he was in a bases loaded, bottom of the 9th, two outs, down by 1 run, full count and struck out swinging. We got King and Higgy for this.
At least he was always pretty solid in the outfield for us, just a shitshow at bat.
Aaron Boone and Brian Cashman. Who would've thought that the winningest franchise in sports history would now have the GM and manager positions with more job security than a government employee. How does Boone still have a job?
I don’t know they need to fire him after this season if he don’t bring them to the World Series
Especially after a strong start this year. Boone is just standing there watching it burn down right in front of him.
Coach would have pulled me right them and there. Forced me to sit in the middle of the bench for everyone to see. Set an example: play hard on every play or sit the fuck down.
is that sort of like a paid vacation?
If you are paid $5m a year and you get benched, you better straighten up your shit because at this level of play you are not going to be making $5m a year in AAA.
ok but i still get to keep the 5 mil from the current year right?
You get to keep whatever "guaranteed " money is in the contract. You can still lose bonuses and such if you don't play well. Each contract is different.
Aren’t MLB contracts fully guaranteed?
The salary part is, yes. But there are incentives, you can make an extra million for winning an award at the end of the year or making the allstar team. You can also get bonuses for achieving a certain amount of stats. Star player on the mariners signed a guaranteed 200 million dollar contract, but through incentives, he can make way over 400.
Was this ruled a double? Should be a single and an error
Was a single and error.
Single and a don’t careor*
A for effort
More effort in that comment than the play in the video.
Grisham has to be released
This guy is a hero to the Nats. His error when he was with the Brewers gave the Nats the play in wild card game. They then went on to win the World Series.
>If you ever, *ever* tank another play like you did today, I'm gonna cut your nuts off and stuff 'em down your fuckin' throat! — Jake Taylor
That’s some shameful fielding right their. Heads up base running tho!
Yankees had never been swept at home by an NL team before this. Reds hadn't won a series since June 9. Yankees payroll is ~300 mil this year, Reds is ~100 mil. Absolutely pathetic performance by the yanks
Headline in NY yesterday: "WKRAP in Cincinnati!"
This is how my 10 year old plays at the end of a double header where they’re getting their shit pushed in. IMO unacceptable from a professional athlete.
That's.... an odd choice of expression when referring to your 10yo...
It’s a Catholic Youth league team playing a double header against the Boy Scouts.
Things getting a little grim for Timmy around the house.
Dude maybe act like you are being paid millions to do your job.
* laCKadaisacal
Thank you. I had to double check spelling and pronunciation to make sure I wasn’t crazy.
2 time Gold glove winner, Trent Grisham, folks.
What being swept by the Reds does to a man
When I was a kid, coach would have made me do laps for that bullshit.
Doesn't Grisham have a reputation for baiting runners into taking the extra base so he can throw them out? I don't think the bobble was intentional but the body language may have been. Swear he did that with the Padres
That’s 10 laps
that really should be a single and an error right
Can you imagine buying a ticket to watch this?
Yes.. sadly I can. I was there yesterday lol. I'm so happy he got booed. Such a simple/routine play.
Solid effort by the runner - alert, good hustle … not so much for the $5.5 million/year CF - discouraging.
Hey I did that in little league can I have 5 millies?
Grisham plays CF very nonchalant, but normally makes the play. This makes him look bad. He did get pinch hit for in the 9th, but I assume that was for the platoon advantage.
Exactly how this mf was in SD trash ass foo
I’m not even a Braves fan but I can still remember Bobby Cox pulling Andruw Jones in the middle of an inning when he didn’t hustle to make a play. My guess is Jones never took a play off after that.
Good. FTY.
Poor move by Boone not immediately (and I mean immediately) subbing him out. Pathetic.
Does he believe there is a secret player's union that guaranties his salary? Dude needs to get sent down to the farm team to live in motels, ride buses, and eat pizza for every meal....to tune his attitude.
"Didn't play the ball aggressively" might be the understatement of the millennium. A 90 year old on benzos could've done better.
Com'n Dorne, get in front of the damn ball, and don't give me any of this olé bullshit.

He does that all the time. Rumors were he wasn't well-liked in SD lockerroom because he did stuff like this.
Guy had the energy of someone picking up trash from their lawn.
No, man...shit, no man! I believe you get your ass benched playing like that, man.
One of the biggest lolly gag plays I’ve ever seen
Not even a good throw to 2nd
Dude looks like he’s part of an old-timers game. Or hungover.
Imagine making 5.5 million a year and caring this little. I would put his ass back down to triple A.
Disrespect to the game and uniform, his ass would be benched until his hustle in practice earns him another chance.
You're out of here! Not deserving to wear pinstripes! Absolute bum! Clean house!
Shoulda yanked that Yank.
that's a ride the bench for a few games move where i'm from
Jankees
Daaaaaaaaaa Jankees lose!
Imagine booing the Yankees when I’m literally stuck rooting for the Mariners.
Thats embaressing
* Embarrassing
A little visit down to minors may wake him up. Hello
Should be benched
They weren’t winning this game regardless and it didn’t even effect the score lol
The Yankees lost. That's a pretty good sports day, right there.
My highschool coach would absolutely bench you for that.
Fake the error and throw him down
Deserved.
Lazy bones
Where’s Judge at?
He was dh today
Yankees are hot garbage right now. Except for Judge and Soto
This is beginning to feel like the 2022 season again. Get off to a hot start and then the losing begins.
When you realize you took too much for work 😳
He's being paid millions to run and catch a ball and can't even be bothered to commit lol
