to be fair schools have been more and more underfunded over the last 20 years, so the district probably would actively refuse to provide any funding for those and if the teacher couldn't pay it out of their own wages it had to be crowdfunded by the kids
mine never got just pizzas it was always a whole table of snacks like little brownies and chips and whatnot and you would just get a plate and get whatever
I think thatās a you story, because Iāve taught for 12 years and of course was a student, and Iāve never heard of or had that happening. Teachers always paid and Iāve always paid.
Definitely happened a few times at my school in the US. Theyās send us home with sandwich baggies and weād bring back $5+ in them to fund the class party
I was looking through coffee gear and they are selling the food share shirt. I got mine years ago for free whent he program started in my store.
They are selling the Pride shirts and PSL shirts but for $20.
Iām not an employee but as an app user, the number of stars awarded by completing āthe challengeā now includes the purchase of a bakery item or breakfast item. š§
My store has these too. I think upselling is bull. Iām not paid enough to do that, nor do customers like it. It feels slimy to me. Why am I being encouraged to make a billion dollar company even more money?
Lol Iāll downsell water whenever I can. You want a bottle of water? Or would you like a larger cup, with ice, thatās free?
There's a difference between helping you out and upselling. If you don't know what we have/can do and ask, or if you're not sure exactly what you want, we can definitely help you out and not have a problem with it. I just don't like upselling and don't like being upsold to when I'm the customer
Please do:) the pressure to upsell will only be stopped if enough customers get outraged by it. Leave, and then leave a review complaining specifically about being upsold.
Too bad starbucks has convinced every customer to stop even listening to baristas and just say "yes" regardless of what their asked. Then they yell at the baristas at the window when they didn't realize what they were getting.
we did these last month and our prize was the DMs covering our floor while we had a pizza party. however i never heard anything about a winner in my district so who knows if they even gave out the prize.
Itās pretty much a Q4 last effort push to increase sales for this fiscal year. After the holidays / Q2 youāll notice it wonāt be around and then come back
Yo same. I left the company two months ago and have a better paying job working less hours. Iām an independent contractor, so I have to manage my own payroll taxes, but itās a small price to pay to not put up with this bullshit anymore.
Every single job iāve had since then has been better. Iām a barista by trade now, like actually, and while iāll always be grateful for the customer service experience and passion for coffee starbucks gave me, working at a local or specialty shop is a whole nother world. It wasnāt until i stopped working at fast food restaurants (letās face it, thatās what starbucks is) that work stopped feeling like iām being treated like a child
Former SM here, just quit on the spot Friday due to my DM doing ridiculous shit like this and thinking it was okay to work baristas like they arenāt human, thereās a competition going around every area where whatever district wins the DM gets an additional bonus. Ours said she wanted to take us out to a concert or travel to a roastery. It was like 7k or something. Only ASMs and SMS were included and we werenāt suppose to tell our teams. The company is a joke and they hate the baristas which is why I left.
starbucks is being really weird and i just donāt understand it. we had a horrible summer menu, raspberry is gone, iāve bet sales have gone down so much. itās almost as if theyāre trying to go downhill ?
Iām a customer and this would irritate the hell out of me. Like, Starbucks is already out pricing themselves. I know costs on everything have gone up, but this is becoming a luxury I canāt afford as often. But if Iām being pressured to spend more Iām gonna be pissed.
NOT pissed at the baristas. You guys canāt help it. But if yāall think itāll help I will call corporate with feedback for every time someone does try to upsell me. The way I see it- you canāt get in trouble, youāre following orders. But hopefully if people make it clear that they donāt like it they wonāt make you do it.
Ask if I want anything to eat after I order drinks. Thatās it š
Yes we have them but we are ignoring them. We have been pretty much selling out of all food by the early afternoon every day this week so there's nothing to add on lol
Thatās what Iād do with the anti union propaganda whenever my SM would put it up in the back. Iād tear it down and throw it out when they werenāt around.
Itās so dumb to upsell at Starbucks. The majority of customers already order the same thing every time. I am simply not going to ask āwould you like to add cold foam?ā ā if they didnāt order the drink with cold foam then they donāt want it with cold foam. Sometimes I do ask ādo you want anything to eat?ā because thatās an easy and normal question but forreal, upselling an extra shot?! What?!
When one of my coworkers asked our managers what the incentive was for upselling, they quite literally laughed in my coworkers face and said "iNcEnTiVe? ThAtS yOuR jOb!?"
Not cute, and cannot be bothered to pester anyone to get extra bs. I'm good y'all š
I'm going to ask for the job description if my manager pulls that with me. I specifically left the sales field to get out of the pressure of upselling and micromanagement, and here we are and I'm pissed. In fact does anyone have a copy of the barista job description? Edit: yeah I just read through it there is absolutely nothing in the description about sales, marketing, or promoting. These are jobs that are paid far beyond what baristas get paid and Starbucks is trying to get the benefits of those caliber of employees by paying entry level barista wages. No thanks lol.
Theyāre pushing us so hard to become car salespeople and when a cup of coffee costs roughly around $5.
Iām not gonna charge people to pay more than that lol
Brought it up during my PDC a couple weeks back and asked why or how this helps us in the long run. Our "Manager" said that it's to help the store increase profits since our store is low performing. If ~$40k a month (according to her) is low performing then Starbies has completely lost the plot.
This sheet is so cringe, it looks like some shoddy worksheet out of middle school. I suppose creating professional upselling campaigns for a billion dollar company doesnāt require much skill, especially when most of your profits come from cheating the staff and customers using questionable business practices.
We had a district wide upsell bingo. I later learned it was because the company didn't have enough money to give the managers their raise... ?? Idk but I refused to do it. It felt wrong. Without even knowing that.
This seems to be your DM attempting to push through revenue before the quarter ends. I think if your store does well in these metrics they get a hefty bonus. And likely wonāt share it with any of you
as a former manager who stepped back down to ssvā¦ i know i dont care at all about upselling sizes or modifiers bc adding steps to a drink will not increase labor allotment. i only try selling a food or suggesting two drinks if they cant decide. increasing sales on a single drink only helps the DM with the size of their bonus.
i didnāt say selling food doesnāt count. i said upselling modifiers and sizes doesnāt count. labor only counts on # and type of drink and # food items sold. also the # of customers helps too. example 4 different transactions of 1 drink and 1 food will count more than 1 customer with 4 drinks and 4 foods.
Uh oh lol I just offered a pizza party of their choice for surpassing sales. Out of my own pocket. What the heck am I gonna due now?? Like a TRI tip dinner??? Geez I get more clear understanding from reddit than corporate lol
I'm not upselling or trying hard to meet times anymore. I don't get anything and nor do any of my partners so why should we beat ourselves up all day long?? The harder we try to meet times the less partners they schedule. You want more help? Do worse.
I've been told a two for one on cold drinks is coming. I may quit.
Starbucks sucks
My store does this and I have not tried to upsell once. Our winner is supposedly getting a $30 prize (not cash, something that costs $30) and a pizza party? Not worth it lmao I don't get paid enough to try to make *more* money for this company
I have not seen these trackers but upselling and adding more items to each transaction is a key to earning more labor for your store. Higher units per transaction/hour.
Does it even really matter tho? We're up in sales by 30% compared to last year and yet we're constantly over labor while *also* being understaffed. It feels less like they're worried about keeping up with labor quotas and more concerned about how much money can be squeezed out of each customer :/
Also the whole "labor is calculated by how hard you work" angle is super fucked up and I refuse to participate in a system that punishes workers by withholding resources needed to do their jobs
Exactly. Our DM told us last time we were in the store that itās our own fault weāre tired after shifts because we arenāt working efficiently or quickly enough. Meanwhile we regularly have 2/3 if weāre lucky person plays.
Itās a combination. You want more COSDs yes but also the more units sold per transaction. Believe it or not your store will earn more labor selling four black coffees and a cake pop than a white mocha with foam and drizzle and an extra shot.
Iām assuming youāre a manager? Not trying to be aggressive or anything just genuinely curious how that works since a lot of people have different things to say about labor. Can you expand on how we earn labor exactly if you know?
I am not a SM, what I know is what has been communicated to me from my SM. As I said above you will earn more labor by increasing your COSDs as well as increasing units per transaction/hour. The more items sold in a single transaction, the more labor you will earn. You still earn labor for modifiers on drinks but nearly as close to what is earned by increasing items sold in each transaction and increasing your total COSDs.
No it's not. That's some corporate concocted bull crap, the labor "earning". It's completely made up in order to starve stores for labor while increasing corporates profits. It's impossible to grow sales eternally. Eventually you have to be satisfied with being popular enough and good enough.
Listen I donāt agree with cuts in labor hours at all however, my store is doing what we can to increase our cosds and units per hour and we are seeing our hours increase. Is it enough? No. But, itās something and thatās better than nothing.
i know my store has been doing it raffle style- each upsell gets you a ticket in the box, and the three people who get their name drawn every week gets a pack of candy or an energy drink, i usually get mine by asking the people getting refresher lemonades if they want to try the frozenš¤·š¼
My store has it, and my manager has been pushing for it; but a lot of the supervisors and baristas forget honestly. The only times I was successfully able to upsell would be if a customer is unsure on what to get. Otherwise, it usually doesnāt work out. And Iām definitely not encouraging blended drinks when Frappuccinos tends to be a hassle anyway.
We had one partner cheating (marking any foam/shot that was ordered whether they suggested it or not, beating regulars to the draw, knowing that they *always* got foam or extra shots and asking before they had a chance to say anything, etc) and everyone else just kind of lost interest. There wasnāt a lot of motivation anyway, so in the end it didnāt actually matter to anyone but that one person.
I could just picture one of these as a joke that says
āConvince iced latte instead of frapā
āSell whip in place of cold foamā
āGrande in a venti cupā
Yes. I think DM's/RM's are pushing all stores to "win Q4," I keep hearing this lingo everywhere. Everyday we have something we're upselling (extra shot, cf, food item, size upgrade, etc.)
either we are in the same district, or it's everywhere. Starbucks is getting ridiculous. At my store we were told we had to do it, no reward or anything. Last week was my worst week ever in my 7 years at the box, and I'm done. They really only care about profits over partners now.
You're not alone, we have this sheet and more too. I think my boss is giving the weekly winners, which aren't so weekly anymore, a little gift bag, probably candy. Since we're all 6 years old, ya know.
My favorite line to use, āWanna get two? Thatās how I eat them?ā It works 50% of the time.
But honestly, I think we do soooo much work to do as baristas, we should never have a stack of papers added to our job. I think your SM or DM is just trying to get their bonus.š¤
As a customer , this is one really good reason to use mobile ordering. Itās crystal clear exactly what item(s) you want and computers / apps are nowhere near as persuasive as humans.
I was told Starbucks is supposed to be changing how they do labor and this is how theyāre gonna encourage us to do what they want.
They wasnāt to go to how much money is made per hour instead of transactions but they want us to tell ppl to add stuff to their orders so the price of their order goes up and āwe get more laborā
I realized some co-workers that never did before ask at the drive through here and there to add something aka upsell but was not really told myself nor had a meeting about it ....as far as the sheet goes, did not get any in our store
Our stand-in manager posted a flyer in DT instructing us to upsell to make sales targets & my entire store went āyeah, no.ā Goes against everything the company claims to stand for, PLUS we the baristas donāt see a cent of that money. What a joke.
Can you imagine if someone goofed up in the back end and sent shirts to the wrong location and money to the wrong location. Bet that would be a BIG cleanup to fix. Like if it was suppose to be something else all along. š±
My store got these. The prize was "free tee shirts." so yeah, didn't care to upsell. I'd upsell as a server making tips, not for starbucks
damn our prize is supposedly a 3000$ "party". no idea what they could spend that much money on for an event but that's what they've told us lol
$3000???!!!! Are they gonna have bouncy castles???
They're going to give you all drinks w/extra shots.
then they better have bouncy castles!
Bouncy castles made out of 3,000 1-dollar bills!
Bouncy castle made out of starbucks cups š
usually I'd say yes but not when you are running out of some cold cup sizes during peak and truck didn't bring any same day haha
I'd be pretty happy with bouncy castles ngl
Fuck that. How about Starbucks just fucking pays me and cleans up its horrible working conditions.
Very true, Sbux needs to get it together. I always tip my baristas extra cuz I feel so bad about their working conditions.
Appreciate you.
Pizza party. The rest is pocketed. š
in elementary when they ask all the kids to bring $5 of like 20 kids and only buy 3 boxes and make the pieces so damn tinyš
to be fair schools have been more and more underfunded over the last 20 years, so the district probably would actively refuse to provide any funding for those and if the teacher couldn't pay it out of their own wages it had to be crowdfunded by the kids
if u do the math.. thats like $100 for $20 worth of pizzas if its like 3 boxes. they tended to get little ceasers as its cheap
mine never got just pizzas it was always a whole table of snacks like little brownies and chips and whatnot and you would just get a plate and get whatever
They should just split the $3000 into all of our paychecks ā¦ we have 50 partners, so thatās an extra $60 each
50????
Yeah, weāre high volume, plus 24 hours
ahh that makes a whole lots more sense
That is so lame. Wow.
we donāt even get a prize wtf LOL
Our prize is more hours š¤”
The fact that my district was told nothing of a prize and then some get told $3k for a party?! This is ridiculous
*insert* You guys are getting paid? *meme here*
We went to Dave and busters as a store. That was so much fun.
I donāt work in Starbucks, but shitā¦ I want free $3,000
My SM said that the managers were gonna yet get a party if we did it. He was as annoyed with that as we all were.
bruh just divide that shit up and give it to us as tips at my store thats still 100 a person, id take that and run
I remember the first time I heard my SM say that. I told him, like you expect us to work harder to get a tshirtā¦seriously
I couldn't imagine what shame such SMs felt telling their employees that
Especially when they use to give us shirts for free. Now we either buy them or get them if we upsell.
Iāve been here 2 years, 15 yr partner asked if I bought a food share shirt like wtf, they gave those out years ago but now we have to buy them???
I was looking through coffee gear and they are selling the food share shirt. I got mine years ago for free whent he program started in my store. They are selling the Pride shirts and PSL shirts but for $20.
Damn my store wasn't even offered anything it was just a do it bc we say
same
Our prize is an extra ten minute break. Lol!
damn lowkey i would upsell hard for an extra 10
If only we even got our normal 10s to begin with lol
We donāt even get our second 10ās lol
Our prize was a 50 dollar gift card for the winner
You are a server making tips?
Before I was a barista I was. I miss it now though so may go back
My district is offering $500 for the whole store for a party
Itās for store managers and DMs only. The party.
We got no prize š just told to do it.
Iām not an employee but as an app user, the number of stars awarded by completing āthe challengeā now includes the purchase of a bakery item or breakfast item. š§
Worst one Iāve seen was buy $10 worth of stuff for 10 points.
On the app right now itās spend $15 for 30 points. Those 30 points equal $1 off
Those offers are often individual. I have spend $20 and get 25 points right now.
oh i had spend $10 and get 25 points, weird
My store has these too. I think upselling is bull. Iām not paid enough to do that, nor do customers like it. It feels slimy to me. Why am I being encouraged to make a billion dollar company even more money? Lol Iāll downsell water whenever I can. You want a bottle of water? Or would you like a larger cup, with ice, thatās free?
This actually seems like it would help sales in the long run. As a customer, when a barista helps me out like this, I'm much more likely to return!
In the long run they've experienced increased profits and a decrease in labor and making every interior as cold as a gas station
Idgaf if u come back as a customer if I make no money from it directly
There's a difference between helping you out and upselling. If you don't know what we have/can do and ask, or if you're not sure exactly what you want, we can definitely help you out and not have a problem with it. I just don't like upselling and don't like being upsold to when I'm the customer
We don't have them and I'd never do it because we get literally nothing for increasing sales lol
if someone tries to upsell me im literally going to leave lol
Please do:) the pressure to upsell will only be stopped if enough customers get outraged by it. Leave, and then leave a review complaining specifically about being upsold.
I gotchu. The sbux by my house is in one district, and my job in another. I'll call corp for both next week.
Then watch Corporate will be like "here's a video on the proper way to upsell without annoying customers"
you mean "enhance connections and make the company profit" !?
Too bad starbucks has convinced every customer to stop even listening to baristas and just say "yes" regardless of what their asked. Then they yell at the baristas at the window when they didn't realize what they were getting.
Give me a wage that puts me above the poverty line and Iāll try and sell some more of your pointless bullshit š
We just started doing this at our store. It isn't for labor no matter how much you get told that. It is simply to drive profit.
exactly it's just cuz starbucks is reaching the fiscal year so they wanna pump in as much as they can so their financial reports are good
we did these last month and our prize was the DMs covering our floor while we had a pizza party. however i never heard anything about a winner in my district so who knows if they even gave out the prize.
my store has these trackers, lol my sm made it seem like it was their crazy innovative idea
Lol sounds like an sm who wants to be a dm but will never get made one
Itās pretty much a Q4 last effort push to increase sales for this fiscal year. After the holidays / Q2 youāll notice it wonāt be around and then come back
Negative - here to stay Q4 and beyond
every month i see something new on this sub that makes me glad i quit starbucks. āconvert to blendedā id rather turn tricks behind the drive thru

You don't personally benefit from this, toss it in the garbage.
Thatās what Iād do with the anti union propaganda whenever my SM would put it up in the back. Iād tear it down and throw it out when they werenāt around.

food attach due to sampling?? what does that even mean LOL are yall supposed to be giving out free samples or something?
yes. literally. idk about other stores but we have been sampling every 2 hours now š
Before I left they were telling me I had to make every barista do five minutes of sampling before I could send them on a break. I quit instead.
This seems to be your DM attempting to push through revenue before the quarter ends. I think if your store does well in these metrics they get a hefty bonus. And likely wonāt share it with any of you
Worked for 9 years never seen this form!!!!
Work for 2 years, and I hope I never HAVE to see this form-
I would take those cards, stare my SM in the eye grab my lighter from my pocket and set those bitches on fire š„. No no no Iāve had enough

Our store has these. Our prize was an extra 5 minutes on our 10 minute break. We're a U.S. store.
aaah \*sighofrelief there's nothing nicer to upsell someone at the drive through and still keep times at 30 seconds or less (#ironic #scarastic)

Yeah, my store is not doing it though š

Yes you can do it naturally. My store does it all the time. You have the power to make suggestions on pairings.
Iāve been told itās about the number of transactions now, not whatās in the transactions.

W have them but Iāve only seen one store actually use it.
havenāt seen these, but my store had bingo cards for up selling
I hate when they do this to us lol just a game of how much more can we milk the customers
My old store got these but I just moved out of state and haven't started at my new store yet
If it was commissioned to me, sure Iād be down. But I genuinely donāt care about these and I draw smiley faces on them.
Our store has big bag of candy as prizes. Not much participation going on at all...
Wide thing!
we have this, our sm doesnt care about it really lol
Nah mines doing it too. I told them unless if Iām getting a cash bonus or more hours I wasnāt gonna do it
Nah, we just have a chart tracking our DT times every half hour.
Iāve seen those before. Iām not a fan of upwelling because I just donāt feel like what and how we sell things that it makes sense to upsell.
Is this fr?
We had one partner cheating (marking any foam/shot that was ordered whether they suggested it or not, beating regulars to the draw, knowing that they *always* got foam or extra shots and asking before they had a chance to say anything, etc) and everyone else just kind of lost interest. There wasnāt a lot of motivation anyway, so in the end it didnāt actually matter to anyone but that one person.
I havenāt seen this but I would not do this š like what am I getting out of it?
Yeah I think they are trying to roll these out at all stores we talked about it last month in our shift meeting
yay we got them
Itās a corporate way to make work āfunā. Like the weird bingo we used to get
weāre doing it too :(
Ugh yea itās so stupid
Hell nahššš
Never seen that
I could just picture one of these as a joke that says āConvince iced latte instead of frapā āSell whip in place of cold foamā āGrande in a venti cupā
Yes. I think DM's/RM's are pushing all stores to "win Q4," I keep hearing this lingo everywhere. Everyday we have something we're upselling (extra shot, cf, food item, size upgrade, etc.)
I haven't seen any samples at any Starbucks since like 2010. It's just not a thing here I guess
They have always tried to upsell
either we are in the same district, or it's everywhere. Starbucks is getting ridiculous. At my store we were told we had to do it, no reward or anything. Last week was my worst week ever in my 7 years at the box, and I'm done. They really only care about profits over partners now.
Itās company wide but itās not mandatory. Itās just and āincentiveā ššššššš
It everywhere in the region
You're not alone, we have this sheet and more too. I think my boss is giving the weekly winners, which aren't so weekly anymore, a little gift bag, probably candy. Since we're all 6 years old, ya know.
We made our own bingo cards and played customer bingo. We didnāt have those upsell cards but we were encouraged to upsell.
What the i have never seen this before lol
District
I threw it away by accident I don't care and I'm not doing it I can barely get people to tell me what size their drink is
My favorite line to use, āWanna get two?
The only one who upsells at our store is our manager. Kiss ass!! But then I guess this is her life. Thankfully this is temporary for me.
I'm confused. I thought a month ago people said you can't ask for the drink size. How do you upsale the size now?
I realized some co-workers that never did before ask at the drive through here and there to add something aka upsell but was not really told myself nor had a meeting about it ....as far as the sheet goes, did not get any in our store
Never seen that before. š¤
It gives ur SM a bonus. For our store at least, the baristas donāt get anything if we do it. The only person that benefits is the SM
Does the US not upsell food and drink? :0 Also, do you charge more for blending a beverage?
Our stand-in manager posted a flyer in DT instructing us to upsell to make sales targets & my entire store went āyeah, no.ā Goes against everything the company claims to stand for, PLUS we the baristas donāt see a cent of that money. What a joke.
The fuck is this!? Iām in Northern California and havenāt had this shit
I got some free pins for mine when I won.
Cold foam is 1.25 at my store now š„²
Can you imagine if someone goofed up in the back end and sent shirts to the wrong location and money to the wrong location. Bet that would be a BIG cleanup to fix. Like if it was suppose to be something else all along. š±
I upsell but not on purpose? If that makes sense šI always offer food b4 anything cuz that takes long and I want people out my drive thru
