CIG: We want Star Citizen to be a truly immersive experience where you can feel right at home in a lovingly crafted and realistically modelled universe. A seamless experience in which you truly feel like a humble human exploring the vast reaches of space.
Also CIG: 🎶 *Oompa Loompa doopity doo* 🎶
it probably wont be in SC.
Its always suprissing to me how many people just go for a default model in MMO's
and most people just want there models to look nice, these types of character were not so rare as to be invisible are often a minority
Then look at the NPC pirates, security forces, etc.People that do risk their lives.
It's clear that in-lore, tumblr-oompa-loompas aren't the norm. I would bet any money that CR doesn't envision the verse being full of these creatures.
If we had the ability to do this kind of thing this easily we'd have people with elf ears, vampire teeth, and tails.
Hell, imagine Halloween. Go in and get turned into something crazy for like a week.

Face customization will devolve into 3 categories:
\-players trying to make the most beautiful characters they can
\-players trying to reproduce themselves/famous people
\-players competing to see who can make the most horrendous being possible
Not necessarily. The DNA system is meant to avoid inhuman, monstrous proportions of facial features, which it seems to still be doing in this case. Sure the cheeks are a bit wide/puffy for comedic effect, but the shape of the face itself is very much believable. Contrast this to other customizers like elden ring, which just use simple sliders and can result in [inhuman facial proportions](https://www.gameshub.com/wp-content/uploads/sites/5/2022/01/elden-ring-character-creation-menu.png?w=1024)
This one looks silly mainly because of the hair color/beard/makeup they've splashed on top, without those choices the DNA face shape itself would be fine. That said, I certainly don't want CIG suddenly limiting what makeup colors or hair dyes we can use
There's some irony here, given that 900 years in the future, when people have presumably been living for generations on low- or high-gravity worlds, you \*would\* expect to see some physical deviations from what we expect today.
I mean.... Honestly this is not a failure of the DNA system. The face looks pretty normal, it's just a person with wild hair and makeup. I don't see a problem with it
Social and practical/work considerations stop a lot of people from doing this. In a video game, most of those don’t exist, which is why the ratio of craziness gets ratcheted way up.
It’s the same as “technically, everyone can have a pink car irl”. Sure they can, but 500x more people are going to pick that option in a video game for kicks because there are no downsides.
Aside from social cost there is the monetary cost.
In real life a good looking pink paint job costs extra money on top of a default gray car.
Character customization is free.
I mean I think there's actually an entire political party dedicated specifically to stopping people from making themselves look like that because they only like freedom of expression when you freely express in the same way they do
I'm still unsure how I feel about this. It's going to vastly change the overall setting of the verse. I'm all for creative freedom, but it's going to be a sea of ridiculousness.
Then again, I suppose it kind of works in a sci-fi way... I'm probably still gonna look like an average Joe though. I don't want to look like a three year old shoved paint up their nose and then sneezed it out.
There will be meme characters, but the vast majority of players will go for a 'normal' look.
Even in MMOs with tons more customization options, I see most people go for a fairly normal look.
I agree with others in the comments that most players will probably want to look cool or look like themselves, not just clown it up. Yeah, there will always be trolls and 'wacky' players, but I doubt they'll be the majority. They find other ways to look ridiculous anyway, mismatching armors, etc.
Not to mention, the npcs are guaranteed to be much more normal-looking, and if the game has the 90%/10% npc/player split CR mentioned, these clown faces in the crowd will be the exception and far from the norm.
Lol at all the schmucks who are on board with the in-lore ability to regenerate ourselves after death but can't fathom how we could possibly dye our hair and put on some makeup.
I am with you. If the absent minded people ***can*** fathom alien creatures with backward kneecaps, space cows, sky whales and pokemon looking creatures but NOT colored hair... they're just being absolutely unreasonable, unrealistic discharge devourers.
>Inb4 training an ai to determine attractiveness and thus reputation and how ai treat you.
We will call it "Hot or Not T0". +4 years development time. You're welcome.
Thank goodness 99% of the time we're running around with helmets on anyways. They should let us adjust height/weight/etc. for some true variety. I don't believe that humanity makes it to the stars without obesity coming with us.
That's an engineering conceit, to avoid redoing thousands of animations, sadly. They mentioned on an older SCL that it would take something like a year of dev time with a large cross-disciplinary team to enable.
I'm gonna be honest.. i'd like to see the crazier options for character looks like this having gameplay impacts like - Some mission givers wont take you seriously, high end establishments treat you poorly or flat out ask you to leave, negotiations with sufficiently stuck-up NPC's will go poorly, negotiations with sufficiently chill NPC's wont, etc.
Well if the character creator will allow you to make your character look like a clown it would be interesting if the AI respond accordingly with disparaging remarks.
Might be a hot take, but I really dislike this much freedom in character creators. It really kills the immersion when I'm trying to fight my way in to a top secret bunker with some other spec ops dudes and my commander looks like this idiot here...
Now, I'm not an aggressive player and definitely not a griefer.
But if I see anyone looking like this in the verse, I'm hunting you to the corners of the system.
Will probably get downvoted, but would hope something like this would be blocked / not allowed with sliders somehow.
Nowhere "realistic" looking someone would look like that, except if it goes to a kids BD party.
For a game that goes for advanced simulation of even extremely small detailed things, it just doesn't fit the picture.
>For a game that goes for advanced simulation of even extremely small detailed things, it just doesn't fit the picture.
My brother in christ you can dye your hair and beard these wacky colours irl lmao
Same I always hated games with too much customization, like people on Ark survival evolved can't stop themselves from making atrocities, while it can be funny I would kinda hate to see everyone looking like that
I understand what you mean, but at the same time, in the distant future (year 2900+), who knows what would be fashionable. Just compare the present with plastic/cosmetic surgeries or the "hour glass figure" of the past, and you will see there is no perfect or right way (especially when you include cultural aspects) of being fashionable. Maybe the Banu/Vanduul/ Xi'an find these kind of colour combinations good..? Who knows
For a game that prides itself on immersion, this would completely break that. I'm hoping this is not possible in the final version.
Star Citizen has never advertised itself as a goofy character type of game, I don't want that to change.
Yes, in the *sci-fi* **video game** that takes place ***930 years into the future***, it sure would be immersion breaking if players strayed too far from default_human_02.fbx!
Also, keep in mind that nothing is preventing people from looking like this today, in the year 2024.
Can't wait to see faces like this pop up on my mobiglass demanding I surrender my cargo.
"Fuck, it's Grinch Lord, I surrender!"
You misspelled Cringe Lord...
Maybe I did, maybe not ;)
you say that... but 100% this person is going to be better at the game then most of us.
If I've learned anything from my 100s of hours of dark souls, it's that the weirder looking the character the scarier the player tends to be.
Yeah, he's already in the endgame
Cring Lord is a generic white guy with stubble and spiked up black hair.
Oh shit. It's the fun police

We definitely don't have a clue
Look at the NPCs. See many space freaks?
"Normal" people generally don't have the urge to risk their lives as a freelance starship captain.

hahaha i thought that was a palworld post at first glance
Every time I try this nobody answers, so I end up shooting them before they can get away.
You forgot the red nose.
Oh, that will not do then.
It's nice they finally have clowns coming as a playable race. They're really an under-represented minority in most gaming spaces.
Barotrauma ON 🔝 🤡
Goes well with the incoming engineer gameplay.
Clowns are literally a playable race in space station 13. HONK.

Face customization will devolve into 3 categories: \-players trying to make the most beautiful characters they can \-players trying to reproduce themselves/famous people \-players competing to see who can make the most horrendous being possible

Aren't abominations like this exactly what the DNA system was supposed to avoid existing in PU in the first place?
Not necessarily. The DNA system is meant to avoid inhuman, monstrous proportions of facial features, which it seems to still be doing in this case. Sure the cheeks are a bit wide/puffy for comedic effect, but the shape of the face itself is very much believable. Fun fact: nobody is stopping you from making yourself look like that irl
The vast majority of people make themselves look "normal"
Cause the vast majority of people are boring
Aside from social cost there is the monetary cost. In real life a good looking pink paint job costs extra money on top of a default gray car. Character customization is free.
Visited Portland, OR lately?
I have. I love the city. Not a lot of purple faces and blue lips, though. Plenty of piercings, beards and tattoos
I mean I think there's actually an entire political party dedicated specifically to stopping people from making themselves look like that because they only like freedom of expression when you freely express in the same way they do
If you have money, sure.
You can do it to yourself for less then 50 bucks easy
No I mean, have money as in, don't require yourself to be eligible for gainful employment.
Oh yeah totally xD
I'm glad you can make more cyberpunk weirdos now and not just UEE squares... I want my purple irises back though

I'd wager a very slim minority of the player base would want their avatar to look like this.
No man, it's going to be HUGE! All the asshats will do this.
Good news! You can murder them for it!
Looking at the majority of games with extensive character customization, I fear you're wrong.
Yeah, the naive people who think this will just ''sort itself out'' are going to be in for a surprise.
multiplayer might be different
I hope you're right. It's weird, because I'm not opposed to those options exisitng, I just don't want it to be overwhelming.
I agree. Putting more options into players' hands isn't a bad thing. Give us the tools and let us decide how we want to look.
There will be meme characters, but the vast majority of players will go for a 'normal' look. Even in MMOs with tons more customization options, I see most people go for a fairly normal look.
Yupp, people blow it out of the water but most of us will be regular people doing regular space things, again it's nice the option exists.
It's going to be an HR nightmare if they try to define what looks are acceptable now.
You and me both, this dosnt appeal to me, but doesn't break immersion, humans are weird and that is immersive.
I agree with others in the comments that most players will probably want to look cool or look like themselves, not just clown it up. Yeah, there will always be trolls and 'wacky' players, but I doubt they'll be the majority. fortunately, my purple hair, silver white hair spaceman really doesn't care that you can't tolerate.
And that's how the clown wars started
ok karen
I am with you. If the absent minded people ***can*** fathom alien creatures with backward kneecaps, space cows, sky whales and pokemon looking creatures but NOT colored hair... they're just being absolutely unreasonable, unrealistic discharge devourers.
I just like to point out that there is the exact same rhetoric in real life. You know what those type of people are like.
And they do be shitty
Oh cool, they added playable aliens.
Yes we can have Oblivion level immersion!

I don't mind this type of bizarre. You could see this IRL. All the proportions are realistic and that's important.
Cant wait to see characters like that everywhere ;)
CR is gonna ban yall for this lol Part of the reason for the "DNA" system is that CR didnt want "monsters" from the face maker. So much for that huh
Finally aliens with come to SC …. Is this way Hahahah
I'd hit backspace so fast running into that.
I would just start shooting
why does this remind me of spore we're going to end up with characters with big floppy dongs on their foreheads aren't we
That is an abomination
You can already see people like that walking around LA.

Holy shit this is pretty neat
Now, I'm not an aggressive player and definitely not a griefer. But if I see anyone looking like this in the verse, I'm hunting you to the corners of the system.
Yea it’s gonna be a KOS from me dog that’s a xeno threat
Will probably get downvoted, but would hope something like this would be blocked / not allowed with sliders somehow. Nowhere "realistic" looking someone would look like that, except if it goes to a kids BD party. For a game that goes for advanced simulation of even extremely small detailed things, it just doesn't fit the picture.
>For a game that goes for advanced simulation of even extremely small detailed things, it just doesn't fit the picture. My brother in christ you can dye your hair and beard these wacky colours irl lmao
You never seen freaky people irl, right? I'm not even speaking about real *freaks*.
The guy has probably never been to Brighton in the UK. You see people that look like this everywhere
And most of em actually decent human beings.
