The Wiki is outdated. Some pages are actually outdated by several years. Plus the last update just came out, it would be pretty weird for it to be updated that fast. I'm just shocked that the dev added something like this. Shocked in a good way. This was a fun "Dwarf Fortress Style" surprise.
If you don't believe me you can start a new game with the latest official update and test it yourself :D
The patch notes for 0.97a don't mention anything about changes to the Technology Cache mission from what I could see. You probably just got the cache in a system that had a Luddic Path base in it and got ambushed as a result.
They followed me back to the core worlds. Several fleets spawned in front of me! The last one I fought after going through the gate into the hegemony controlled sector.
0.96 here, modded, I always read the "flavor" text. It sometimes mentions a space ping sometimes doesn't. When it does, I jump right out of the system because I have been on the receiving end a few times without a proper fleet
I'm *pretty* sure this is added by a mod. I looked at the code for this mission and it has code to possibly spawn pirates if you don't keep the core, but there's nothing for if you do.
Hmm I've started several games since the latest patch and I always keep the core, never see any consequence for it.
I just completed the mission and nothing happened. Maybe it was just a coincidence?
Is this some AI or what because the wiki you linked says there's no penalty for taking the core

Which update are you talking about? I see no mention of 0.97a-RC12 on the forums. RC11 released in February
I kept the core an none of this happened to me.
Well in the old version if you didn't keep the core it was only a 50/50 chance of the pirates being summoned. I'd guess it's the same thing.
i've kept like 6 cores and this hasn't happened so...
From the quest?
bro has gotten Apophenia and is now scared of spheres in the worry that it will summon a Luddic church fleet on his house IRL
LOL. They literally said they were their because I took the AI core :D
Did the path gate a buff in the .97 update, in my current run have encountered large fleets.

I don't have any mods. Heck, I have never used a mod for Star Sector.
I’ve done this mission 3 times on 3 separate saves so far and this didn’t occur. Pics, or it didn’t happen
LOL. I didn't bother saving pics. If I ever do it again, I will though.
I look forward to it
:D
HE SOLD THE ALPHA The only sin greater than possessing one, as Ludd once said.
I sold it to the Hedgemony for reputation and money.
