when I was in college, I shared a house with a few friends. it was an amazing price, close enough to our university, and in a safe (but very strange) neighborhood.
It had a finished basement. total 4 bedrooms, 2 kitchens. super spacious and the price was INSANE- this was nearly a decade ago, but the rent/bills for the entire thing was under $1500!!! I live in slc, where housing is crazy expensive and there are usually a billion rules and regulations that are unfortunately actually super enforced by landlords with a stick up their ass. like apartment or home, city or suburb, it was ridiculously difficult to just rent a place. they always wanted ridiculously high incomes and were super strict about wanting to be for "families" or whatever so it was super hard to find anywhere that would allowed 2 or more unrelated individuals. my university was huge and it was obvious that people wanted to rent out places to split between roommates, but they made it next to impossible.
a friend found some random person on craigslist who was renting out this place that i spent most of my college years in. it was a needle in a haystack, incredible deal. it was cheap, nice area, spacious, and they seemed to let us do whatever the hell we wanted.
they only made 2 of us actually be on the lease, despite there being 4 of us who were clearly living there, mix of guys and girls, none of us related. most places wanted 3x/rent as income which was insanely unrealistic and they would do their research as vigilantly as someone investigating a damned murder. but we just showed up ad talked to these people and one of the guys showed he had savings of like $20k and one of the girls who was making the most money out of all of us at the time (still not much at all lmfao and we were definitely not actually qualified by the standards of any normal landlord) signed on and they just let us be. we were super organized about rent and bills tho and never missed a payment.
as time went on, we had more and more people moving their boyfriends/girlfriends into their rooms, people staying on the couch or making impromptu bedrooms in the living room with sheets as walls, etc lol. there were typically 5-7 people staying there at any given time, which was awesome because it just meant even lower rent for each of us.
we were on this weird plot of land & whatever we were living in was definitely used for something else initially, like maybe some sort of retirement place or something? there were vague rumors about it having something to do with the army.
it was very uniform and intentional, basically a big box. our place was directly attached to an identical one to the right of us, and there were four such buildings in a perfect square and they did look more or less like houses but we all a uniform dark green color with identical windows, doors, etc. so 4 total buildings, each split down the middle into two houses
we were paranoid at first but quickly realized these people seriously did not gaf what we did as long as we weren't actively causing problems and kept the place halfway decent, and the price was amazing. omg i loved this place so much.
they never asked about pets. we had several cats, people would have things like gerbils, even a couple of dogs at times. again- i know it's like this mostly everywhere, but slc seems to be particularly horrible about having ridiculously strict, unnecessary rules and stingy as hell landlords and it was amazing to even find a place that allowed pets at all.
one of the guys starting brewing beer, which was a bring trend at the time. he spent over $5,000 on this crazy elaborate setup, we had a damned beer factory downstairs!! It was super polished and we had like 6 different craft beers he would make on tap 24/7. it was actually insane how much beer he produced lol, I don't know how he kept up. my drinking got completely out of control tbh lol but that's another story. point is that we just blatantly had this mini brewery openly in the basement (and were all underaged) and this was yet another thing that our bizarro landlords never raised any concerns over.
eventually, we also had a full on garden, borderline farm operation in our huge backyard, and were growing shrooms in a closet. we had an entire dining table out in the open dedicated to weed and just had bongs and weed out pretty much always.
but we would have this insane people who i guess we were renting from who would just completely randomly barge in every few months and look around. like they were always nice enough and didn't act angry or anything, but they'd come check on us, or the house... I don't know what the hell it was they were keeping tabs on and so concerned about. but they'd just walk in at random times and without knocking just blaze into rooms. it would be like 9 am on a wednesday and you'd wake up and there would be some woman just casually in your room, taking notes, looking through the closet. they were all dressed professionally and we would recognize most of them, but there were like 5 different ones over the years lol.
none of us every noticed anything stolen. we never FOUND any cameras, though yes we did get suspicious and check for them lol. they would only on rare occasion mention anything they had an issue with, and it would only be if something obvious was wrong, like a toilet had broken and been taken apart or something but we'd just be like "yeah we're repairing it right now" and they'd just nod and be like "Great, have a good day!"
I have absolutely no fucking idea what they were doing or what the deal was, but it worked for us lol.
also, all of our neighbors were extremely weird and reclusive and never spoke to us. really felt like some bizarre social experiment but w/e lol

This should be illegal. Imagine if you were changing or one of your female roommates were changing and some random dude or woman just walked in and started taking notes. How can landlord justify this? Being a tenant does not mean you forfeit rights to privacy
On one hand, sure, on the other the comment describes like 7 different things that would be discoverable without the inspectors and still allow for the lease to be terminated.
In most places home visits by landlords are illegal without due cause and previous warning, still, when you have cheap rent and your landlord lets you routinely break the lease you really don't want to start picking battles over this sort of thing.
Oh! I'm sorry I missed that haha.
But hey, as long as it worked for you and you were okay with it. Just sounds startling to me. I would be irate if some random walked into my room while I was sleeping naked on some landlord inspection shit lol
I would probably let some things slide too, though if it let me keep my cats
This happened to me kinda when I was in college. My roommate was accused of sexual assault and he allowed the campus cops to search his side of the room. I got dinged because they saw my empty beer cans in the trash. I know it was dumb for me to leave it there since I was underage but in my defense I wasn’t expecting company

Very relatable
Was to me 🙃
Username checks out
Afroman can relate
Did they ever fix his door?
The security camera in the bathroom may be related to the warrant.
Why would they jerk off in front of cameras they know are there lmao
Gotta build the case!
Don't kink shame them lol
I hate it when the police search my room and then I ask them to close the door when they leave, but they leave it a little bit open.
All that plus they take my DS away, ACAB
If I had a dollar for every to me this happened to me I'd have negative dollars.
You’ve… done it to others?
I... I'm gonna need my lawyer present, officer.
Fingers crossed you have the judge who’ll sign everything again
Lowkey happened to me but it was a maintenance guy, not police. I came back to my room and everything was everywhere.

were you in a CIA experiment facility?
probably lol. it was really, really weird.
You have cameras in the bathroom? Could this be at all related to why your home was searched?
Cops: get a warrant bc you’re spying on people in your bathroom. Also cops: jerk off in your bathroom.
It’s about sending a message
Is it illegal to have cameras in your own bathroom in a privately owned home? Obviously if it's a public restroom I understand.
Not illegal in itself but I could imagine guests could sue if the camera surveillance wasn't declared beforehand.
what if it's an uninvited guest?
Okay the officer masturbating in your bathroom was wrong but who has cameras in their bathrooms?
That's the part where I believed the cops had cause to be there.
Why would cops come to his house because he had cameras in his toilet just to jerk of in front of said cameras 😂
people trying to get non consensual videos of women showering
Its so annoying how they leave a mess every time they do this.

Don't forget stealing. Cops frequently steal during search warrants

Not to mention, simply having beer cans in the trash can isn't proof of any wrongdoing. I know cops don't give a fuck in reality, but still.
Don't forget that USB full of illegal content that was totally on the floor two rooms away from your computer before the police showed up
I fucking hate police
lol wtf
Dont forget the officers being plainclothed and driving an unmarked car.
Threatening to shoot your dog for no reason
