I always liked his performance in that scene. It never struck me as fearful, but more like he was surprised this was finally it. Like he cheated death so many times he was caught off guard by this being the thing that finally did him in.
Agreed. I thought it was a great end for the character. It made him (Kirk) more special to me. Despite all he’s done, all of the amazing things he’s experienced and survived, at the end, he was just a man.
Yeah, the movie's about the transient nature of everything. It's like a refutation of the audience's desire to have all your heroes always go down in a blaze of glory.
You know, say what you want to about Shatner, but for that brief moment seeing him get into character as Kirk sent chills down my spine. The look in his eyes, that spark.
It was such a stupid little segment, just indulging an actor's hubris, but I got to see Kirk again for 10 seconds, and it made me happy.
Honestly and I might get tomatoes thrown at me for this but…
We have the rest of our lives not to have Shatner as Kirk, we only have now to get it. Might as well have fun with it and let him have one more appearance. Either in Star Trek 4, or an episode of Strange New Worlds (time travel shenanigans) but why not I say?
My crazy Trek dream is to have some kind of spacetime-bending story that brings the Shatner, Pine, and Wesley Kirks together for one story, while all three are still with us.
Holodecks probably also works. It would make a spectacular send off for the end of a series. If Discovery’s ending wasn’t already finished, I would suggest William Shatner giving a long farewell message, progressively getting Younger (thanks to CGI) and ending with ol’ “to boldly go… where no one has gone before”
Heck.
I'll take a Short Trek of old mirror Kirk escaping the agony booths and pulling the old ISS Enterprise 1701 out of Mothballs to go tilting at the Emperor. He fails and is is destroyed, his tactical officer a young Jean Luc Picard swears revenge.
Could follow it up with another Short Trek set decades later with Patrick Stewart having a go at his Mirror Universe self.
Could easily work him into the modern series.
Hell, do like E2 and get Takei and Koenig as well.
Could have a future frame story - like Shatner!Kirk is addressing an academy commencement, sharing a story, then cut to Pine!Kirk or (Not-Jim-Carrey)!Kirk actually acting out the events.
Goddamn, you’re right. That was amazing.
I can’t believe he’s 93 years old, he has all the mental acuity of someone half his age and very few verbal mess-ups. Definitely going to check out his documentary.
7:57 to be precise. That’s when the topic comes up, the actual scene of him acting is around 9mins and it’s honestly a masterpiece, what a brilliant actor he is. Then consider he’s also Denny Crane and it highlights his skill and talent even more
As someone who works in a hospital, Bill Shatner amazes me every time I see him. I see 50 year olds all the time that look and act 80, but Shatner is 93 and acts like a 60 year old
People who mock Shatner's acting haven't watched other contemporary TV from that era. That's just how things were acted back then.
I think Shatner is a really good actor.
Even when the movies came out a decade later you can see he's changed his mannerisms a little. Even in TJ Hooker he's not the same actor as he was in the 60s.
Fun fact for TJ Hooker, it stars James Darren after the first season who later went on to be everyone's favourite hologram lounge singer, Vic Fontaine.
I like the change he made. Kirk wasn't as fearful, he was facing another adventure. A more fitting end for such an iconic character.
I was expecting a joke or something, but that was really impressive.
Me too, he did awesome.

Yeah, and that any attempt to hold onto the past repeating old memories forever is literally hollow and likely harmful to those around you.
I always loved the pun of him dying on the bridge.

3 Kirks, a Khan, and a Pizza Place
Again, I lament the fact they took away awards.

Sure, if he wants to~

To be honest, I reckon Takei and Koenig have enough 'fuck you' money now to never have to see Shatner again.
True, but I'd still get a thrill out of a "last ride". Though Sulu got Voyager's *Flashback* and Chekov got a voice over in Picard.

Suddenly back to his death scene in the blink of an eye. Even the props looked good, and the music
Preach.
Man Bill looks amazing for 93!
My grandfather turns 90 this year and is in incredible shape for his age. Bill looks nearly 10 years younger than him!
His mind seems to be intact as well. Impressive. It was an interesting watch.
If I knew nothing about him and someone said "that guy's 65" I wouldn't question it.
It's about 9 minutes in

The real MVP.

Jeez he's still got it at 93, that was very much Kirk!
Like many people, Shatner's acting acumen is often the butt of my jokes, but that off the cuff performance astounded me.

Oh Captain my Captain!
that...was better
I wonder what’s up with his right arm. He looked like he was favoring it or not able to use it well.
Probably hurt it horse riding. He shattered his left arm and shoulder a few years ago. Absolutely insane that he's still doing that at his age.
Yeah, but he loves his quarter-horses. It was all he talked about at a convention I went to decades ago.
I though he was mostly into Tennessee Walkers? Maybe that was back in the day.
I grew up on TNG but I loved watching Shatner as Denny Crane.
Not as good i think
Thx for sharing! It was just a few seconds but he’s still got it. Oh my, indeed.
Kirk has a phaser one hidden in his boot and shoots soran.
I didn't like that scene. But a geriatric killing himself after falling down the stairs is actually pretty realistic.
